00:05the Giants took him fifth overall out of Ohio State and just three preseason weeks in it's
00:12already clear why he is the most talked about defender in Giants training camp his name is
00:19Arvel Reese and when you watch him the tape says one thing this isn't a rookie adjusting to the
00:26league this is a dude that was born ready for the NFL and he's made an impact from day one
00:33in fact
00:34down in training camp in West Virginia in the first fully padded practice of camp he blew up
00:40Cam Scatterboo on a third and two and then in that same period beat Andrew Thomas for a sack
00:47that's just the physical part of this game mentally he's there and he's picking it up at a rapid pace
00:55the playbook I mean Harbaugh said that he makes almost no assignment mistakes despite carrying
01:01a heavy plate of responsibility and that just ain't at practice we're not only just talking about
01:07practice we've seen that Ohio State pedigree on tape in this preseason as well so let's break down
01:14what has made the fifth overall pick so special so early in today's Blue Rush player spotlight
01:26all right I got three plays for you guys that have kind of stood out to me when it comes
01:31to Arvel
01:32Reese from the preseason you can see him here we talk about the Giants defense needing to get better
01:37at stopping the run and this is why you bring in a Tremaine Edmonds who isn't playing in this first
01:43preseason game but you also draft Arvel Reese with the fifth overall pick and you can see the violence
01:49from day one throughout the course of training camp and now in the preseason games look at how he plays
01:55and attacks the run guys you're these I pick these plays for mindset mindset and what he's going to
02:02bring so all right we'll watch that real quick watch it uh we'll watch it from the wide one more
02:07time
02:07and then we'll break it down from the tight look at him at the point of contact
02:14he's able to get free get into the tag get in and make the tackle so a couple things we're
02:19going to
02:19point out here and it's a great job with him and Abdul Carter working together Abdul one setting the edge
02:26and he talked about getting better at that and adding that to his game this this year so it's a
02:31great job by Abdul uh setting the edge and then this is just a great job by Arvel Reese at
02:36the point of
02:37contact on this block it's trying to be reached here again Abdul sets the edge to where he now
02:44box it to where this running back has to cut in now if Abdul gets washed out and since Abdul
02:51went on the
02:52back side didn't play over the top here if Abdul gets washed out and and Arvel gets pinned this turns
03:01into a big run but no Abdul Carter does a great job setting the edge having his anchor foot down
03:08extending his arms to box this this run in and yes Arvel Reese goes into the inside but watch him
03:15at the
03:16point of contact and that's what frees him up to be able to make this play
03:23gets low gets explosive gets his hands extended or his arms extended and now what that does because
03:32now this box is collapsing now what that does is makes him available to come off this block
03:39and get in and make the tackle too many times last year with the Giants on the second level you'd
03:45see
03:45that block it that that block be made by one of the lead blockers whether it be a lineman or
03:53a fullback
03:53and it'd be a one for one that blocker would take out that whoever that backer was and then it
03:59would
03:59turn into a big play but great job by both of these guys gap assignment playing disciplined football and
04:06even though he may he may get a note or you know inside linebackers coach Frank Bush may make a
04:12note that
04:12hey you may want to be over the top but he went to that inside to allow Micah McFad to
04:18spill over the
04:19top and make that play if he needed to right here on that second level but Arvel Reese already showing
04:25that he can play and stop the run all right let's go to the next one you see him here
04:32now this one he's
04:33on the weak side he's gonna go one-on-one on the iso one-on-one with this fullback doesn't
04:39make the
04:39tackle but watch how that watch the violence that he plays with and how he affects the play let's watch
04:45it football ladies and gentlemen this kid is a football player he is a football player and he
04:58plays with violence you hear everyone say use the word violence when describing his football style
05:06all right watch it here this time again over top of that a gap when he came into the league
05:12everyone
05:12was talking about him being on the edge being some sort of edge rusher no the uh a hardball has
05:19said
05:20he's gonna play in all these different gaps and he's shown so far throughout training camp and the
05:26preseason that he's comfortable playing uh off the ball being an off-ball linebacker all right let's watch
05:36hey yum caught a body ladies and gentlemen we've caught a body but we'll see it here some sort of
05:44our uh some sort of weak run some sort of wham away from the strong side of the football
05:48you see 76 getting one of that one-on-one here and Arvel just ready to attack
05:55they just put uh a beat that what let me see where's that center let's see the center all right
06:01there we got a gap b gap that's Reese's gap right here he is now he has to insert and
06:06he has to fit
06:07and he has to stop this play so again watching he and Abdul Abdul again does a great job keeping
06:14his
06:14outside uh shoulder and leg free using this left leg as an anchor to set the edge again the Giants
06:21have
06:21to be better setting the edge in the run game this year you can already see Abdul Carter in two
06:26plays
06:27showing that he's taking the drills to now the field now this now this this uh what was the guard
06:35this guard has one-on-one with this uh with with uh I forget this kid's name but he's a
06:42he's a dn
06:42you know they run that three four he's that big dn and now you've got that one-on-one
06:47and now you see Abdul Carter at six five uh 230 or 240 240 let's just say 240 you see
06:57how low he gets
06:59and you see the violence at the point of contact now don't worry about the cutback and all that
07:05right now the Giants didn't play some of their starters on the defensive line and Jermaine Edmonds
07:10didn't play but again we're just showing how he plays downhill and catches bodies when it's time
07:17at the point of contact he is so explosive and so powerful at the point of contact this kid's
07:23gonna make a lot of plays in the run game for this Giants defense
07:30all right last but not least this is the last play again he's on the back side again he's gonna
07:37meet
07:37this for uh uh let's watch let's watch let's watch I don't know if this is a full back of
07:43the guard
07:43watch him here plays down here gets through wraps around makes play on the football gets credited for
07:52the half tackle watch it one more time then we'll go to the tight plays downhill loads into the guy
08:00gets skinny and gets around you see him you just see by the stance this dude is ready to play
08:07football
08:07you can see by his stance this kid is ready to hit somebody I absolutely love these breakdowns when
08:14it comes to Arvel Reese because watch this again business decision by these full backs
08:23and these guards he's that powerful at the point of contact right shoulder keeps his left shoulder free
08:29in case this thing bounces out and he needs to explode and run that tackle down but watch him get
08:35skinny
08:36wrap around and get in on the tackle and not only did he get in on the tackle watch how
08:41he he launches
08:42into this running back watch this oh that's a violent tackle and you never know depending on
08:49uh the momentum of a game how he's feeling how he's playing you might be able to knock that ball
08:54out
08:55I expect this kid to do a lot of good things for this Giants defense and this Giants run game
09:01and you're starting to see it early and very often you see it kids all over the field in fact
09:10week one
09:10versus the Vikings two tackles one solo as one of the three rookie starters on defense and check this
09:16out he graded as the highest rated rookie performance across the entire NFL week one of
09:22the preseason week two versus Miami after whooping ass and taking names later in the joint practice he
09:29only got 10 defensive snaps by design in the preseason game because Harbaugh set most of the
09:35starters but he got in on a tackle for loss and he showed his knockback power here's why I think
09:42this
09:42kid has made an early case to win defensive rookie of the year when you turn on the tape and
09:50if you
09:50haven't you need to go do it you immediately see and you feel his presence because he plays with an
09:57elite
09:57level of violence I also think Denaro Wilson's scheme and how they plan to use him is going to
10:03benefit every single one of his skill sets Harbaugh has already said that he'll be in the a gap b
10:09gap
10:10the c gap the d gap off the edge he calls his his scheme positionless when it comes to where
10:16they're
10:17going to line up Arvel Reese that means that he's got one job to do and that's go and get
10:23the football
10:23and he's already shown that he can do that at a potential high level the Giants are counting on
10:29this rookie to play at event level and he's already starting to show that he's up for the task
10:36you
