00:05I need all of Big Blue and all the University of Miami fans to stop what they're doing,
00:11turn the value up, and I need you to help me welcome two-time Super Bowl champ,
00:17national champ, and the pride of the U, the original bad boy of the NFL,
00:22former Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey, to this special episode of Blue Rush.
00:28Shock, my man, my man, appreciate you hopping on with this, my man.
00:34Before we even start talking football, I would know other you.
00:38I saw on your Instagram story the other day that you had surgery on something, man.
00:43So can you kind of give us an update?
00:45Like, you're good, right? Everything's good with you?
00:48Yeah, good, man. Thank you very much.
00:51I appreciate you having me on the show, and go Big Blue.
00:55But, yeah, I had surgery about 14, two weeks ago, actually, yeah.
00:59So on my neck, I'm feeling a lot better.
01:03My nerve damage is getting better, and my neck is feeling better.
01:07So I'm blessed.
01:08Again, man, thank you for having me on the show and checking up on me, but all is well.
01:13All right, man.
01:13You know, these football injuries still, they still linger around.
01:17That's why I tell these players all the time, get your money, bro,
01:20because you don't know how that body is going to feel, you know, 20, 15, 20, 25 years down the
01:26field.
01:27So, you know, we're always on the player side when it comes to this.
01:30But, man, we got a new guy from the U, a new first-round pick from the U, Francis Smile
01:39with Noah.
01:40A lot of people are excited about this pick.
01:43He can play tackle.
01:44He can play guard.
01:45I mean, he comes from your alma mater, so kind of tell Giants fans what they're getting out of CeCe
01:52Malinois.
01:54He is an impact player right out the gate.
01:58There is not going to be a play where he's not going to be playing this year.
02:02He's an amazing talent.
02:04He came into University of Miami as a freshman and made a statement.
02:08And as tough as they come, as gifted as they come, I'm super, super excited for this pick.
02:15Obviously, I'm a Miami guy, but the Giants should be thrilled.
02:19This guy is the real deal, and he was the top five on my board.
02:24So, he's an amazing talent.
02:26This kid will be – if they move him at guard, he'll be an all-pro guard, you know, his
02:31first year.
02:32He's that good.
02:34And if they need him at tackle, he's obviously played that all college.
02:37So, great pick.
02:39I'm very excited for him.
02:40One thing I love about him is he's going to be bringing some of that Samoan pride up to East
02:45Rutherford.
02:46If there's anybody out there that's played with the Samoans, you know you're getting yourself a guy that will pancake
02:53you
02:53and then help you up and be nice to you, like, later on, after you're done with practice or after
03:00you're done with the game.
03:01So, those usos.
03:02He enjoys it.
03:03You can see it.
03:03Just putting on his film, you can see he enjoys playing football and doing exactly what you said.
03:08Yeah, because when he was drafted, he was saying, like, I'm ready to die for Jackson Dart.
03:13And I'm like, oh, whoa.
03:15But he's – I mean, that's – he's a football guy, man.
03:18And that's one thing that I feel like the Giants need on that offensive line is –
03:22I do.
03:23Yeah.
03:24That's an amazing pick.
03:25And, you know, Harbaugh is the coach.
03:28You know, we can't kind of skip that.
03:30You know, that's kind of – if you want to put it in perspective of drafts and new faces around
03:35the organization,
03:36Coach Harbaugh is an amazing, amazing talent.
03:40And I'm sure all Giants fans are thrilled with him and the direction the Giants are going to be transcending
03:47here in the near future.
03:49Well, let's stay on, Harbaugh, because you've played for legendary head coaches, future Gold Jacket head coaches, Tom Coughlin, Sean
03:57Payton.
03:59John Harbaugh steps in here, and he's in charge of turning this thing around right away.
04:05So two-part question here.
04:07What do you think about the rest of Harbaugh's draft?
04:10Obviously, you know, Arvell Reese and then going to go get a corner and Colton Hood in the second round,
04:15Malachi Fields in the third.
04:17And then John Harbaugh, the head coach, is he the guy that can step in and right this ship and
04:25get the Giants back to their winning ways?
04:28I think the first part of that question is, you know, I would have liked to see the Giants trade
04:35out of that position back and pick up the other kid, the outside linebacker, Sonny Stiles.
04:41And maybe, and, you know, obviously continue to keep your number, you know, you could, you know, you trade back,
04:48get your guy from Miami and pick up a safety, maybe downs, you know.
04:52That's what I thought they were going to do and get an extra pick, maybe to get a receiver.
04:56But it worked out.
04:56They got a great pick in the second round.
04:59So they did a great job.
05:01I'm excited for their defense.
05:05But this is how many years now has it been since they've always drafted a guy on the edge here?
05:11You know?
05:12Yeah.
05:12It's, you know, they got a number three pick overall, five pick overall.
05:16I mean, it's, you know, I'm sure Giant fans are, you know, they're going to have a great defense for
05:24sure.
05:24It's just, I don't know if his kids, they're talking about playing weak side linebacker and, you know, Brandon, it
05:30takes a long time to understand his game.
05:32He's only played really a year and a half in college.
05:34So his upside is tremendous.
05:37He's young.
05:37He's fast.
05:39But, you know, I just, you know, I just, I just felt like a safety I thought they were going
05:44to go after.
05:45Well, you feel like Malik Nabors.
05:47Malik Nabors thought the same thing.
05:48But do you think it helps Arvel Reese in coming in and picking up this playbook since at Ohio State?
05:54He had Matt Patricia.
05:55Matt Patricia was a D coordinator, you know, with the New England Patriots, was the head coach for the Lions.
06:01You think that will kind of help him in terms of grasping that playbook and what Coach Coughlin used to
06:07say,
06:07know and know you know when it comes to being where you're supposed to be at?
06:12I think he'll pick up the playbook and everything.
06:15I just hope it's the system he should be playing.
06:19He should be rushing the quarterback and getting sacks.
06:22That's what your draft is, you know, in the top 10 for.
06:25That's why these guys are getting paid tons of money to, you know, to sack the quarterback,
06:29not to really, you know, guard a tight end or to be outside linebacker besides, you know, rushing.
06:35So I think he's going to work out.
06:38I mean, they have a, like I said, they have a lot of guys down that can rush the quarterback.
06:43I'm excited for him.
06:45And the second part of the question, I think Coach Harbaugh, I think he is.
06:49As you can see what he's building now, he's not waiting.
06:54He's building a team now that's going to compete, that's going to, you know, block for Jackson.
06:59They're going to have fun doing it on offense.
07:00You could just imagine that the play calls.
07:04And their defense is stacked with all top 10 picks that can rush the quarterback.
07:09This year, they got a great guy.
07:11And, you know, they got a great quarterback.
07:13I think he'll be a, you know, he'll be a kid from Tennessee.
07:18He'll be able to play, you know, his first year and contribute a lot.
07:22Yeah, I can't, cannot wait to see what John Harbaugh brings to this team, man.
07:27Excited for him.
07:28Let's talk some tight ends right now, man, because John Harbaugh went and got his guy, Isaiah Likely, from Baltimore.
07:36He's now the TE1.
07:38You've been the TE1 here in New York.
07:43What do you like about Likely's game and what's he going to add to this Giants passing offense?
07:49That shows you what you said at the beginning of this.
07:53He went and got his guy.
07:54He got four guys from Baltimore, didn't he, and brought him over.
07:58And this tight end is his guy.
07:59And he's always been a tight end friendly coach.
08:02When I played, he had taught heat.
08:04And the list continued to go on.
08:07So, this kid, you know, I think he's going to be good for the Giants.
08:13I think Jackson's going to, you know, show a lot of targets to him.
08:17He's a talent.
08:19If you look at it throughout his career, he's young, and he's gotten better every year.
08:23And it's just, I think, playing for someone like Coach Harbaugh, it's everyone's attitude's going to have the winning attitude,
08:33you know.
08:33And I know Francis coming in at UM, we breed them down here not just for their ability to play
08:39football, but we expect to win.
08:41And a lot of guys that come from college, they're not, their expectations, they don't have that, you know.
08:48They're okay with being just okay.
08:51And at UM, we're ready to play.
08:53We're ready to compete at a high level.
08:55And I'm very excited just for overall Giants fans.
09:00So, I think the quarterback that we got, he's second to none when he has time to make plays.
09:07I'm excited for this tight end.
09:09If you look at his stats, like I said, every year, he's gotten better.
09:13So, it's a good time to be a Giants fan.
09:16Brandon, there was a stat that I read not long ago, and you can tell me if it's true or
09:21not.
09:23In the last 10 years, the Giants are second to last place in winning games in the National Football League.
09:32And they're only two ahead of the New York Jets.
09:36That has to change.
09:37You know, when you played and I played there, the expectations, it's just these fans, they deserve it, you know.
09:46In the last 10 years, there's no excuse to go and the coaching and what's been happening here.
09:53It stops with hardball.
09:54You see it.
09:55It's over.
09:55That is the best hire that the Giants had made.
09:59And I'm just super, super excited for the organization.
10:03Hats off to the mirrors.
10:05Hats off to the tissues.
10:06It's an exciting time to be a Giant fan.
10:10That's for sure.
10:10Yeah, man, two playoff appearances in 10 years, like the stat that you said.
10:17There's no running away from that.
10:18But it looks like it's on the way up between the hardball hire, Jackson Dart going into his second year,
10:25as you mentioned, and then the two top 10 players.
10:27You know, when I got there, Ernie Corsi drafted me.
10:32Jim Falso was the head coach, and then it was Coughlin.
10:34And before that, the Giants, I mean, only had a handful of head coaches, if you look back in the
10:39history.
10:40So, in the last 10 years, it's over.
10:43And like I said, I'm excited for the Giant fans.
10:47They deserve it.
10:48They're the best fans, best city in the world.
10:51It's an amazing place to play.
10:53And, you know, you know how it is when winning the city, Brandon.
10:57There's no place like it in the world.
10:59From here on out, no more head coaching hires for a long time, and no more top 10 picks.
11:04Yeah, we don't have to worry about anything.
11:06No more top 10 picks.
11:07None of that.
11:07Hardball has it.
11:08Yeah.
11:09Hardball has it.
11:09Well, let's talk about what you got coming up, man, because you'll be up this way pretty soon.
11:13You've got yourself a signing at Woodbridge Brewing Company in Woodbridge, New Jersey, May 17th.
11:21Kind of talk to us about that.
11:22Absolutely.
11:23It's a meet and greet at the brewing company.
11:26I think it starts at 2 o'clock, but, you know, we can just come and just hang out, open
11:33up some new IPAs, and be there.
11:35And I can't wait to see some Giant fans talk football.
11:38Like I said, it's an exciting time to talk Giant football.
11:42So I hope to see everyone out there.
11:44And, again, I really appreciate you guys having me on the show.
11:50And congratulations for everything you've done.
11:52I remember you as a rookie.
11:54And I want to get this out there because, you know, there's other people that said things, and I want
11:59to make it clear about me being a teammate.
12:02Can you tell me our experience when you were a rookie?
12:05I remember you wrote me something the other day, and I completely forgot about that story about, you know, your
12:11rookie year and stuff.
12:12But, you know, I hope to God.
12:15I've had thousands of teammates, and I hope that you see me in a light that maybe others haven't or
12:21talked about me being a teammate.
12:22Or am I a good teammate or what here?
12:25There's two stories I tell all the time when people ask me, what was Jeremy Shockey like?
12:30First and foremost, you know, it was Thanksgiving.
12:33You invited myself and Steve Smith.
12:36We were rookies then.
12:37You invited us over to your palace in Edgewater at the time on the water for Thanksgiving.
12:44Had a great Thanksgiving dinner there.
12:46And I'm just walking around the house like, maybe I need to go do some push-ups after this because
12:50this is the type of contract and house that I want.
12:54But so there was always that.
12:56That's right, because that was with the Metropolis brothers, remember?
12:59Yeah, I didn't want to say their names, but yeah, yeah, yeah.
13:02Yeah, they ended up buying a percentage or two of the Patriots not recently.
13:06They bought the Playboy Mansion.
13:08They're great, great people.
13:10But, yeah, I remember that.
13:12So that was one story.
13:14And then the second story, I think it was going into Buffalo Week.
13:18I think Sonoris Moss' hamstring was messing with him.
13:22And Coach Coughlin had told me that, hey, you know, you're going to get some reps.
13:27You know, we got to get you ready just in case we put Sonoris on IR.
13:31And you were still hanging around the team at that time.
13:33I don't think you were injured, but I think you were still, you know, hanging around at that time, I
13:38think, I believe.
13:39But you were out there, and it was the first place.
13:43Were you injured yet by the time we played Buffalo?
13:46Buffalo or Chicago?
13:47Okay, so you were still good.
13:49You were still good.
13:49You were at practice.
13:50Yeah.
13:50You weren't down yet.
13:52And I took a rep for Plex because, remember, Plex didn't practice much that year because of the ankle.
13:58And Eli hits me up the sideline, and I catch it.
14:02I catch and go.
14:03And you were clapping.
14:06You was like, hell, yeah, you've been working your ass off all year.
14:10We need to sign him to the active roster this year.
14:13And you were just like.
14:14And then when they found out, when I found out that Saturday, Kashaka went and bought a new suit and
14:19everything.
14:19I was waiting for the plane ride there.
14:21They found out that Sonoris was going to be okay, and he was gone.
14:25And then Coach Coffin was like, all right, we're just going to keep you on the practice squad.
14:28But you pulled to the side and was like, hey, this doesn't change anything.
14:32Like, keep your head up.
14:33Keep working the way you've been working.
14:35Like, it's all going to happen for you.
14:37Don't worry about it.
14:37And, you know, I always remember those two experiences, man.
14:40So, if there's anybody that ever says anything about you as a teammate, I'll jump to the first in line
14:46to be like, my experiences with this dude was nothing but positive.
14:50You held guys accountable.
14:52You just, you had personality back in the day, bro.
14:55And back in the day, we were supposed to be machines.
14:57Now these guys can have all the personalities in the world.
15:00If you were playing today, you would have had a podcast.
15:03You would have had NIL money.
15:05You would have been like, you would have been on barstool already.
15:09My hat goes off to you and how hard you've worked to continue to stay in this arena.
15:16I mean, you've always been a personal guy.
15:19You pick it up the first time and look at the success you've had after football.
15:23And it's not just what you did on Sundays.
15:25And it's value influence.
15:27And you've been an ambassador to the Giants.
15:29And great job.
15:31And congratulations for everything.
15:32Well, I appreciate it.
15:34Shocking.
15:34Good luck at the autograph signing at Woodbridge Brewing Company.
15:37And come on, keep coming on back to New York, man.
15:40New York fans, they love you, bro.
15:42They absolutely love you.
15:44So appreciate you hopping on with this shot.
