In August 2026, President Donald Trump announced an executive order directing U.S. federal agencies to refer to the U.S. portion of Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” adding a fresh flashpoint to already tense U.S.-Canada relations. The move comes amid ongoing trade and tariff disputes between Washington and Ottawa. Canadian officials and local leaders have rejected the unilateral renaming, emphasizing the lake’s longstanding historical name, Lake Ontario. Trump described the change as effective immediately, making the announcement another headline-grabbing development in the bilateral relationship.

00:00And finally, I guess the purpose of this, more than anything else, is we're going to be changing the name
00:05of Lake Ontario, effective immediately, to Lake America.
00:12That's going to take place right now as I sign the order. Do you have anything to say about it,
00:17Ben?
00:17Yes, sir. So this is a straightforward but important executive order.
00:21It directs Secretary Burgum and the Department of the Interior to update the Geographic Names Information Service to reflect that
00:29the lake once known as Lake Ontario will, from this day forward, be known as Lake America.
00:35This is a lake that has most of its volume in the United States. The deepest parts of the lake
00:39sit in the United States territory.
00:41So this will reflect that this is an American lake.
00:47Okay.
01:10Thank you very much.
01:13And we filed all the necessary papers, documents, everything else.
01:17We've notified all of the various people that we have to notify.
01:21So we've done everything that you have to do.
01:24And this is official, effective immediately.
01:28Do you have any questions?
01:29Anybody?
01:29Mr. President, sir.
01:31Mr. President, sir.
01:33That video you put up yesterday, you crossing out Lake Ontario and riding Lake America, it's been seen by about
01:3830 million people, maybe more, across all the social media platforms.
01:42What message are you sending to Canada with this move today?
01:45And why was this such an important thing for you to do?
01:47Well, it's an interesting question.
01:48No message.
01:50As you know, Canada's been ripping us off for a long time on trade, very sadly.
01:55Even the military.
01:56You know, we defend Canada for nothing.
01:58We don't get anything.
01:59They don't pay us to defend Canada, but we defend Canada.
02:02And they understand that.
02:03As an example, we bought icebreakers.
02:06They'd like to use them.
02:07We have 11 brand new icebreakers coming in.
02:10They'd like to use the icebreakers.
02:11They don't pay for anything.
02:13And they want to be treated like a state, but they're not a state.
02:17But they want to be treated like they're a state.
02:19And so we just can't do that anymore.
02:21We lose, on average, over the last 15 years, $60 billion a year carrying Canada.
02:27So we just can't do it anymore.
02:28We love the people of Canada.
02:30I don't think their representatives do an appropriate job.
02:34Maybe they'll change.
02:34I really don't know.
02:36It doesn't make much difference.
02:37But we can't let the whole Canadian thing, it's been going on for decades, and it has
02:45to come to a stop.
02:46So we're going to be doing tariffs on their cars that are coming in at a substantial level
02:51because we want to make the cars here.
02:53We don't want, you know, they can make their own cars if they want, and they can continue
02:59to make their cars for Canada.
03:00But we don't want to make, we don't want them to make cars for the United States of America.
03:06It's very simple.
03:07Likewise, many other products.
03:08So the lake change, the Lake of America, was something I've been thinking about for a
03:14long time, actually.
03:16As you know, we took something called the Gulf of Mexico, we changed it, and now it's very
03:23routinely the Gulf of America.
03:26So if you think about it, we have a gulf and we have a lake.
03:31Now all we need is an ocean.
03:33So maybe we'll have to change the name of the Atlantic and or the Pacific.
03:36Maybe we'll change them both.
03:39Why are you so focused on doing things like this towards America's allies instead of doing
03:46things that target adversaries?
03:47You know, the Canadian officials have treated us very badly.
03:51They're nasty people.
03:52They charge our farmers 400% tariffs.
03:55They've been doing it for a long time.
03:57And I had them figured out in my first term, and I did some pretty strong things and had
04:02it getting pretty good.
04:03And then the election was rigged, and now I'm coming back and doing it the way and finishing
04:08the job.
04:09But they treat us very badly.
04:11Canada treats us very badly.
04:12I would say that of all countries, as you know, we have President Xi coming in a couple
04:16of weeks.
04:17We have a lot of, we deal with a lot of people.
04:19People oftentimes, they'll ask me, who's the worst to deal with on trade?
04:25And I said, that's easy.
04:26Canada.
04:27They are the worst to trade.
04:29And they feel entitled.
04:30And just, we can't have that.
