Democratic House Leader Hakeem Jeffries is firing back at President Donald Trump over the controversial renaming of Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” calling the move a “deeply unserious thing.” Jeffries also blasted the ongoing U.S.-Canada trade war as “ridiculous,” adding to the growing political tensions between Washington and Ottawa. The remarks highlight the widening dispute over trade, diplomacy, and Trump’s increasingly provocative actions involving Canada.

00:00Well, let me say about the MAGA extremists, they are both deeply unserious and deeply dangerous.
00:06And renaming, so-called, renaming, I should say, Lake Ontario is a deeply unserious thing.
00:16In response to a trade war with Canada that Donald Trump started,
00:20that's going to make life more expensive for the American people, that's ridiculous.
00:25They're also deeply unserious.
00:26Donald Trump and Republicans promised that they were going to lower the high cost of living on day one.
00:35But costs haven't gone down in the United States of America.
00:39Costs have gone up, including because of the Trump tariffs,
00:45which has increased costs on everyday Americans by thousands of dollars per year.
00:54America's far too expensive right now.
00:56There are too many people in this great country, working hard and playing by the rules,
01:01can't thrive and can barely survive.
01:05That should not be the case in the United States of America.
01:09The wealthiest country in the history of the world.
01:13That's why House Democrats are fighting for an affordable America.
01:18We're fighting to lower the high cost of groceries, gas, and goods.
01:23We're fighting to make health care affordable for every single American.
01:29And we certainly will fight to hold the crooks accountable,
01:34who have unleashed unprecedented corruption on the American people.
01:41The communities that don't want data centers will end up, in his words,
01:44as, quote, backwards and poor, and that the inside data center movement is making China happy.
01:49I want to get your response to that.
01:51Do you agree that communities resisting these projects are standing in the way of American prosperity?
01:57And what do you, how do Democrats believe these communities are,
02:01what are the legitimate concerns that you heard as you travel the country about data centers?
02:06Or did they come up in your travels, just kind of level set for me?
02:09Well, data centers certainly come up wherever I may be traveling the country
02:14as part of the concern related to the affordability crisis.
02:18Donald Trump and Republicans are divorced from reality.
02:21They think that the affordability crisis is a hoax.
02:26Donald Trump and Republicans have made clear they love inflation.
02:31Donald Trump and Republicans have told the American people directly,
02:35we don't think about your personal financial situation.
02:42So the Republicans, it should come as no surprise,
02:48are pro data center without any restraints.
02:54We know this because in their one big ugly bill,
02:59House Republicans voted to preempt state and local authorities from regulating data centers at all.
03:12And every single House Republican, but one or two,
03:17voted to unleash data centers on the American people in an unfettered fashion.
03:25That's facts right there.
03:28And in that one big ugly bill,
03:31all of these very same House Republicans,
03:33including people like Mike Lawler
03:38and David Valadeo,
03:39all of them
03:42voted
03:44to give tax credits
03:48to people building massive data centers
03:53in communities across the country,
03:56particularly in rural America,
03:58without restriction.
04:01They can try to run away from their votes right now.
04:04We will not let them hide.
04:06What about Trump's comment?
04:08Well, I mean, Donald Trump
04:10and Republicans continue to insult their own voters.
04:15Right?
04:16This is not a partisan issue.
04:17Everyday Americans,
04:18whether you're in urban America,
04:20rural America,
04:21suburban America,
04:22exurban America,
04:23the heartland of America,
04:25small town America,
04:27or black and brown communities throughout America,
04:30are concerned about being overrun by data centers.
04:34And they want some restraint
04:39so that they're not overrun by the possibility
04:44of their electricity bills continuing to skyrocket
04:48and their water bills continuing to skyrocket.
04:51This is an affordability concern
04:53broadly shared by the American people.
04:55And it should come as no surprise
04:57that Donald Trump once again
04:59is dismissive
05:02of this affordability issue.
05:03Could you comment on the possible
05:07of the voting
05:08for the Lindsey Graham sanction bill
05:11in the House
05:12in the nearest weeks?
05:16I've got...
05:19What is the take of Democrat Party in the House?
05:22Yeah, we haven't had a conversation about it yet,
05:26but both chairman,
05:30soon-to-be chairman Richie Neal,
05:31and the once-and-future chairman
05:34of the House Foreign Affairs Committee,
05:36Greg Meeks,
05:37have expressed strong opposition
05:40to the bill
05:41because it risks providing
05:45tariff and sanctions authority
05:47to Donald Trump and his administration
05:50that we believe they will abuse.
05:53And so I have serious concerns
05:55with the legislation.
05:56I haven't been able to evaluate it
05:58line by line yet,
06:00but I expect that
06:01the House Democratic Caucus
06:02will have a conversation about it
06:03as early as this week.
