00:00In just one day a spectacular 96% lunar eclipse will see Earth's inner shadow darken the surface
00:06of the full sturgeon moon overnight on August 27th to 28th. Here's what you need to know starting with
00:10how it got its fishy name. August full moon is often called the sturgeon moon because it appears
00:15at a time when the large freshwater fish were most easily caught by the indigenous tribes at
00:20the Great Lakes of North America and Canada. The partial eclipse kicks off at 9 23 pm EDT on August
00:2527 as Earth passes between the moon and sun during the full moon phase. In the hours that follow Earth's
00:31curved inner shadow will be visible to the naked eye as it advances across the lunar surface.
00:36The eclipse reaches a crescendo at 12 12 am EDT on August 28th when Earth's shadow will cover 96%
00:43of the lunar disk leaving just a tiny crescent exposed to direct sunlight. Look out for a subtle
00:48red glow infusing the lunar disk around the point of maximum eclipse where sunlight filtered through
00:53Earth's atmosphere is bent or refracted onto the shadowed part of the surface to create that
00:57beautiful blood moon effect. Each stage of the partial lunar eclipse will occur simultaneously for
01:02everyone on the night side of Earth with a line of sight to the moon but the exact local times
01:07for
01:07each phase will change based on your location on Earth. For stargazers on the west coast of America
01:11in cities like Los Angeles, California and Portland, Oregon the point of maximum eclipse will arrive just
01:17a few hours after sunset. While anyone watching from east coast cities including New York and Jacksonville
01:22will see the lunar spectacle peak around midnight local time. For the United Kingdom, Europe and
01:27Africa the eclipse will be an early morning affair as the moon arcs low towards the western horizon.
01:32You can check the exact timings and altitude of the moon during key phases of the eclipse
01:36on timeanddate.com. We won't get another lunar eclipse this impressive until the total lunar eclipse
01:41on New Year's Eve December 2028 so be sure to head outside and catch a glimpse of August 96%
