00:07Will you be one of them? Nearly one billion people will be able to witness at least part
00:12of this eclipse, including millions across the UK and Europe. But if you're inside the path of
00:17totality, you'll see the moon completely block out the sun. A total solar eclipse happens when the
00:23moon passes directly between Earth and the sun, casting a shadow onto Earth. But here's the catch.
00:31The path of totality is only about 100 miles wide, so you have to be exactly in the right place
00:38to
00:38witness the eerie twilight of totality. On August 12th, 2026, that shadow will race across Greenland,
00:47Iceland and northern Spain, giving lucky sky watchers a few unforgettable minutes of daytime darkness.
00:53If you're outside the narrow path, you'll still be treated to an impressive partial solar eclipse.
00:59Across the UK, as well as much of Europe, the moon will cover just over 90% of the sun.
01:04Exactly how much it covers does depend on your location. But remember, you should never look
01:11directly at the sun without certified eclipse glasses or a safe solar filter.
