WATCH: Coach Blake Aubin talks about Mitchell Smith's journey in the gym ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships.
Transcript
00:00So it's been a three-year journey with Mitchell. We had a big goal to make the
00:05Nationals this year, which he succeeded with and actually exceeded our
00:10expectations with that. So he was selected to represent Australia for
00:15the Commonwealth Games, the IPF Powerlifting Commonwealth Games. But the
00:20journey has been incredible. When he first started, there was obviously
00:26quite a lot of balance issues, which was very interesting. We put chalk on the
00:32ground for him to stand on and now he goes out in front of the judges and
00:36completes his lifts extremely well with really good technique. So that's helped
00:40in all aspects of his life as well, in terms of mobility, getting around places.
00:45He doesn't require a wheelchair as much anymore, which is awesome. So just to see
00:50that outside the gym as well and the success that that's had has been unreal.
00:54And so what are your goals when he gets this competition? What are you hoping to
00:58achieve? Yeah, so obviously we haven't traveled internationally before, so that's
01:01going to be the first thing. But if we can get three personal bests on the day, I
01:07think that would be amazing. And if we can snag a medal within that, I think that would
01:11be even better.
