00:00It was around 4 o'clock on Saturday afternoon when two soldiers from the 1st Infantry Battalion were on routine
00:07patrol near the Blanche Shares Community Centre.
00:10They spotted two children and an adult male struggling in the water.
00:16Recognizing the danger, the sergeant on patrol immediately sought assistance from a nearby resort to obtain a life ring.
00:23He remained on shore, managing the rescue rope, while a lance corporal, who is also the patrol medic, entered the
00:30water.
00:31The lance corporal reached the three distressed swimmers and got the life ring to them, while the sergeants helped pull
00:37them back to shore.
00:38But the situation quickly escalated. Two other adults, a man and a woman, entered the water attempting to help, but
00:45they too encountered difficulties.
00:47The soldiers responded and assisted both individuals safely back to shore.
00:52Once all five civilians were out of the water, the lance corporal assessed them and found no immediate medical concerns.
01:00The regiment says the response of the soldiers demonstrated the alertness, initiative and sense of duty expected of its personnel.
01:08The Trinidad and Tobago Regiment is also urging members of the public to exercise caution when entering the sea,
01:15remain aware of prevailing water conditions and seek appropriate assistance when someone is in distress.
01:22It warns that attempting an unplanned rescue can place additional lives at risk.
