Why do narcissists cheat with people who seem completely random, unsuitable or nothing like you?
That question can destroy your self-esteem after narcissistic abuse because you start comparing yourself to the other person.
Were they better looking?
More exciting?
More sexual?
Did they have something you didn't?
But what if the cheating was never a comparison between you and them?
In this episode of The Mechanics of Toxic Relationships, Daniel Harper breaks down narcissist cheating, narcissistic supply, validation, control and why intimacy can become transactional inside toxic relationships.
For some people with strong narcissistic patterns, intimacy may be less about genuine connection and more about what the other person provides in that moment: attention, validation, power, excitement, relief from emptiness or proof that they are still desirable.
That changes the question from:
Why did they choose that person over me?
To:
What function was that person serving?
This is why comparing yourself to the affair partner can keep you trapped. The other person may not have been "better." They may simply have been available, validating or useful to whatever need was driving the behaviour.
The episode also explores why conquest can matter more than connection. Sometimes the reward is not the relationship itself but the proof: I can get them. I am wanted. I still have power.
When external validation becomes the fuel source, one encounter cannot permanently solve the underlying problem. The validation fades, the emptiness returns and another hit may be needed.
That cycle can also explain compartmentalisation. One person provides stability. Another provides excitement. Another provides attention. Another provides sexual validation. Another becomes backup supply.
The survivor is left trying to understand the betrayal as if everybody involved was playing by the same rules.
They may not have been.
And that is where recovery begins: stopping the comparison and recognising that someone else's cheating behaviour does not measure your value.

FAQ
Why do narcissists cheat?
There is no single reason every narcissistic person cheats, but cheating can sometimes be linked to validation seeking, entitlement, novelty, control, impulsivity or the need for external attention.
Why would a narcissist cheat with someone they claim not to like?
If the encounter is serving validation, opportunity, excitement or control rather than genuine connection, the specific person may matter less than the function they provide.
Does a narcissist cheat because the other person is better?
No. Cheating does not prove the affair partner was more attractive, valuable or compatible.
