00:17Today we are at our meerkat exhibit and we are giving them some wonderful holiday enrichment.
00:35Today they received some special wreaths which were made of gruia and some hibiscus flowers
00:41as well and then we sprinkled mealworms, their favorite snack on top.
00:53They immediately were interested, jumped on top of them, were digging, trying to find
00:58all the worms that they could in the leaves and they even had a few little tussles over
01:02who would get the most worms.
01:10The most important reason we do enrichment is to encourage natural behaviors of our animals.
01:16Meerkats have a lot of natural behaviors like digging and using their sense of smell to find
01:21their prey like insects and things like that so we want to encourage those behaviors as
01:26often as possible.
01:41Meerkats are diurnal which means that they are most active in the morning when the sun comes
01:46up and then a little bit later in the afternoon.
01:48But our meerkats are active pretty much all day long so for most of the day you are guaranteed
01:54to see someone out here playing.
