00:00You won't believe what I made using just an old kitchen towel and some cement.
00:05I began by cutting a towel into a square piece of fabric and mixing my cement to a smooth yogurt
00:12like texture.
00:16I prepped my mold by weighing down a bottle and taping a cup on top to get the desired height.
00:37Then I dipped the towel into the mixture.
00:46Once fully saturated, I draped it over the mold, shaping the folds exactly how I wanted them, and cinched the
00:53top with a string.
00:57To give it structure, I watered down the remaining cement and brushed it right over the fabric so it soaks
01:04in and hardens strong.
01:07Once it was fully cured, I took off the string and peeled it away from the mold.
01:22I lightly sanded the surface and smoothed it with a final coat of slurry.
01:38After it dried completely, I spray primed it, painted it my desired color, and tied a rope around the base
01:45to finish the look.
01:54Here is your trendy, designer-duped cement ways, a crafty, budget-friendly decor to any room.
02:00Grab an old lampshade from a thrift store.
02:02First, you need to wet your lampshade thoroughly with some water.
02:06Then, you need to mix up your cement slurry.
02:08We mixed together two cups of water, four drops of dishwashing soap, and four cups of cement.
02:13Basically, you need enough to make a sandy paint mixture.
02:16I then painted this mixture on the wet lampshade and let it dry completely.
02:21Now, it's time to make a cement base for the pot.
02:24To do this, mix together two cups of water, one-fourth a teaspoon of dishwashing soap, and about seven cups
02:30of the cement mix.
02:32Pour the mixture into the bottom of the lampshade.
02:34I used a paper straw as well to mark where we needed the drainage hole for the pot.
02:39After letting the cement fully dry in here, we then used a drill to drill in the drainage hole.
02:44And then, I added some potting soil and a beautiful fall mum on top.
02:48I placed it on my porch with all my other pumpkins, and it made for the perfect do-it-yourself
02:53cement pot for all my fall decor.
02:54For this project, grab a little measuring cup or something plastic to lay some fabric over.
02:59Place that cup upside down just so you can get a nice big square of fabric cut out.
03:05What we're going to do is put that upside down and lay the fabric over.
03:08You want to make sure you have enough to lay over, and it drapes over the sides.
03:12Next, some fast-setting cement.
03:14Make sure it says cement, not concrete, and it has a work time of at least 20 minutes or more.
03:20Once you get it, go ahead and pour some of that into a bucket that you're going to mix the
03:25cement with some water.
03:26Now, if you mix too much water at a time, you can always add more cement.
03:31And if there's not enough water, just add it.
03:33Keep stirring.
03:34Remember, you only have about 20 minutes to work with it, but we want to get it nice and soupy.
03:39Now, if you like a messy project, this one's for you.
03:42You just take that cloth that you cut out and get it all drenched in that cement.
03:47Cover it as best you can.
03:49Lay it over the cup, and then we're going to spread it out.
03:52We want to make sure it's all spread out along the edges so it has something flat.
03:57Now, I mixed up some more cement, but I wanted to make sure it's a little runnier on this one.
04:04We're going to put it right on the top, but let it drape over the side.
04:07Don't worry.
04:08It's looking a little messy right now, but it's going to look good.
04:12Next, I grabbed a little chip brush, one that's disposable with a little bit of water.
04:16Keep dipping the water, and I'm going to use it to smooth out the sides.
04:20I know it looks really messy right now, but stick with me.
04:24We're just going to keep working it all the way around, and it's going to smooth right out.
04:28What happens is we want to build it up and make it strong.
04:31It looks really weak right now, but that's okay.
04:34Once the cement dries, it's going to look good.
04:37Now, watch this little secret.
04:39Take some of that powder.
04:40If it's too wet, you just drop that on there.
04:42Sprinkle it on like salt and pepper.
04:44It's going to harden right up, and you just keep doing that over and over again.
04:49Again, drive that chip brush and get it wet, and just keep working it around.
04:53It's going to smooth that cement right out.
04:56Once we let it dry for about an hour, I'm going to put some more right on top because
04:59I want to give it a special look.
05:01Just let it drape right over the bottom like that.
05:04It's going to give it like a little thick base, but I use a stick because I want to make
05:08sure the flat base will sit on the table.
05:11Once it's dry, it takes about four hours.
05:13Just flip it right over.
05:14Now, this might be surprising, but it's not yet done.
05:17We still got some cloth showing, so you're going to mix up your last batch of cement
05:22and pour it in.
05:23We want to fill all those little valleys, crooks, and crevices.
05:27Don't worry if it gets inside the plastic bucket.
05:29That's going to be just fine.
05:31Take that chip brush again and smooth that cement all over.
05:36Just get it laid on over.
05:38If you need to add a little bit more, go right ahead.
05:40Remember, this thing's going to strengthen right up, and it's going to just be
05:44as strong as ever.
05:45Last thing I'm going to do is work the inside.
05:47Just let that drape right over that plastic cup, and once I get done, it's going to look
05:51great.
05:51Now, we're going to let this harden up for another couple hours, and it's time to plant.
05:55Look at that.
05:56That wonderful little concrete planter.
05:59Now, if you want to add some paint, you can do that also.
06:01But this is a wonderful design.
06:03It's really strong, and it can be used outside.
06:06I hope this inspired you to build your own concrete DIY planter.
06:10For today's project, we're going to need a bucket or a bowl that has some designs on
06:15it.
06:15Don't worry.
06:16This one's got holes in it, but that's not going to be a problem.
06:19We're going to take some tape, and we're going to cover all these holes up.
06:21It's very important that when you lay the tape, just do it in little pieces.
06:25You're not going to want to just cover the whole thing.
06:27Push it on there pretty good.
06:29Don't worry about what it looks like.
06:30That's not going to be our concern.
06:32All we want to do is make sure that none of our concrete is going to leak out of the
06:36bowl.
06:36So once you get all that tape on there, go ahead and flip it over.
06:40Make sure everything's color.
06:42Turn it back over again, and we're going to look for any daylight.
06:44If we don't see any, we're good to go.
06:46Now, we're going to get some quick setting cement.
06:49Set it down.
06:50Pour a little bit of water in first.
06:52Now, we're going to put some pigment in there.
06:54It doesn't take much.
06:56Just a little bit.
06:57Watch this.
06:58That's all you need right there.
07:00Take that bucket and swirl around, and get all that water mixed in there.
07:04You're going to see a lot of dust here.
07:05Make sure you're in a well-ventilated area.
07:08So go ahead and put that concrete in.
07:09I've got some gloves, so that way I can just mix it by hand.
07:13That way I can check the consistency.
07:15Make sure it's about pancake batter.
07:17That's what we're going to want, because we want it to flow, but not too much.
07:21Once you get it all mixed up, just start putting in your bowl with all the tape on the edge.
07:26Just set it in there, and once you get it, go ahead and start wiping it around the sides.
07:30We're going to go ahead and fill those holes now.
07:32It's easier to do when you've got a little bit in.
07:35Keep going until you get about roughly two to three inches on the bottom of concrete.
07:41Again, keep mixing all the way around the sides.
07:44That's going to give it a little bit of strength.
07:46It's almost like we've got a bowl within a bowl.
07:49Once we get all of that mixed in, it's time to mix a new color, and this one's going to
07:53be gray.
07:54We're going to do it exactly the same as the red.
07:56Mix it in, swirl, add a little bit more water, and then we're going to add some concrete.
08:00Put the last bit in there.
08:02Once it's mixed up, go ahead and pour the whole thing right inside our bowl.
08:06Once you get a lot of that poured right on in, we're going to grab us a cheap little bowl,
08:10and we're going to smash it down in there.
08:12That's going to give our cavity that we need for putting in potting soil or our plant.
08:18Once you get it in, let's just go ahead and smooth it out.
08:20It's going to get rid of any air bubbles, but we need to make sure it's full.
08:23Add a little bit more of that concrete.
08:25Then I grabbed an oversized popsicle stick, and it's almost like putting icing on a cake.
08:30We're going to smooth that out because this is going to be our top.
08:33We want it to look good.
08:35Take our little stick, anything you've got.
08:37Also, clean up the sides.
08:38You're going to have a lot less cracking if we make sure our bowl sides are cleaned up.
08:43Once it dries for a few hours, pop that little bowl out of the middle.
08:46Don't worry if there's little cavities.
08:48That's fine.
08:49Now we're going to turn it over, and we're going to take all this tape off.
08:52Some of that concrete might stick to the tape.
08:54That's normal.
08:55Just let it go.
08:56Now work it around and pull that bowl off, and look at that.
09:00What a wonderful template that made.
09:03Look at all those little designs.
09:04Now it's time to plan it, put a plan in, and display it.
09:08Now this can be used for indoor or outdoor because it's made of concrete,
09:12but I love the two-tone color to it.
09:15It's better to mix it that way instead of painting.
