In its inactive state, SCP-382-1 is a large baby carriage, manufactured in 19th century. Its age shows; metal components are heavily rusted, the rubber of the tires is brittle, and the cushion is missing. Any person who makes visual contact with SCP-382-1 (from now on referred to as "the subject") is compelled to approach it and place their hands on its handlebar. As time passes, the subject will begin to weaken and their body will begin to degrade, while SCP-382-1 slowly begins to take on a new, shinier appearance.

00:00Nobody could see value like Eddie. He was one of the city's top antique dealers, and when he walked into
00:05the showroom,
00:06he somehow had a sixth sense for the item that could fetch thousands, if not more, at auction.
00:11If one man's trash was another man's treasure, then there was no greater treasure hunter than Eddie.
00:17Business had been slow lately, though, even with his agents searching all over for that next big-ticket item.
00:23That was the problem with dealing antiques. There was only ever so much history left to sell.
00:28The thought that the day might come where he was an old man, hawking vintage fidget spinners and labuboos, made
00:33him sick to his stomach.
00:36Until one of his agents contacted him with a promising lead.
00:39Hey, Eddie, he said, his voice crisp and clear over the phone.
00:43You're not going to believe this. I happened upon a real find here at the park. Beautiful item.
00:47If we show it a little love and refurbish it, then maybe...
00:50Don't keep me in suspense here, man.
00:51It's a baby carriage. Looks like pre-World War I. Glorious piece of machinery.
00:56Want me to grab it and bring it back by the shop? I think you can turn it into some
00:59real money, man.
01:00Eh, couldn't hurt.
01:02Eddie didn't have his hopes up.
01:04That particular agent had brought him some garbage before.
01:07Inauthentic items, cheap knockoffs.
01:09But it was worth a try, especially when things were so thin on the ground.
01:12He'd stay at the office for a few more hours, see if his agent brought him anything valuable.
01:17But his agent never turned up.
01:19Not a call, not even a text.
01:20That was unusual.
01:22Even though this particular agent hadn't kept a great track record for delivering the goods,
01:26he was always reliable on a personal level.
01:29If he wasn't here, it was because something must have gone wrong.
01:33Eddie drove to the nearby park and decided to search for his missing agent.
01:37The day was creeping towards its end, the sun dipping low in the distance.
01:41There didn't seem to be anyone else there.
01:43Strange.
01:44He tried calling his agent, but there was no response.
01:48Strangely, it was while making this call that he heard something.
01:51A familiar ringtone.
01:52He followed the sound until he saw his agent's iPhone sitting at the base of a tree, ringing.
01:57A spiderweb of cracks creeped across the screen.
01:59He felt this terrible pang of anxiety when he saw it.
02:03But that feeling seemed to melt away when he looked up.
02:07Oh yes, there it was.
02:09The baby carriage, just as the agent had described it.
02:12Couldn't have been any later than 1930 in construction, and it certainly did look tattered.
02:16Tarnished metal, blown out tires, rips in the basket and the bonnet, but it had a strange
02:21magnetic draw to it.
02:23The same magnetic draw that you might feel towards the subscribe button right now, and
02:27you'd be wise to click it, so you have Explorations of the Anomalous by me, Dr.
02:31Bob, appearing on your subscription feed.
02:33Why not hit the bell, too?
02:35It's the only way to ensure that you never miss another one of our videos.
02:38Just like Eddie had no intention of missing this baby carriage, he approached the intoxicating
02:43antique and almost instinctively grabbed it by the handles.
02:47It was as though electricity surged down the lengths of his forearms.
02:50The tranquil silence of the park was suddenly replaced by a loud sobbing, echoing out from
02:56inside the carriage.
02:57The sight stole the breath out of Eddie's lungs.
02:59There was a baby in the carriage, a truly disturbing sight, a wretched, wounded thing.
03:04Thin and shaking, it looked starved, injured.
03:08It wept through bruised eyes, shook skeletal limbs.
03:11He'd never experienced such a deep sympathy before.
03:14He knew, more than he knew anything else in life, that he needed to soothe this baby,
03:19to bring it some form of comfort.
03:21He tried to force out comforting noises, walking in circles, pushing the carriage in a tight circle
03:26in hopes that it would calm the infant down.
03:29He kept walking and walking and walking.
03:31As time passed, he noticed the baby getting better, and that made him smile.
03:36He didn't notice the toll it was taking on his own body.
03:40The ashen skin, the swelling joints and brittle bones, the wasting away of his body.
03:45It was all fine, as long as he'd help the baby.
03:48He just needed to help the baby.
03:51Soon enough, the carriage was still, as Eddie crumbled to dust behind it.
03:56It was pristine now.
03:57It would sell for thousands, and a beautiful, healthy baby sat inside.
04:03There's something uniquely cruel about SCP-382, known colloquially as the Haunted Baby Carriage.
04:09There are a number of anomalies out there that leverage temptation to lure victims to their
04:13violent and disturbing deaths, using promises of money, sex, or wishes granted to steal away
04:18a person's life or even their immortal soul.
04:203-8-2 is different.
04:23It takes the most natural instinct in the world, the drive to protect a little human smaller
04:28and weaker than yourself, and kills you with it.
04:31At its most basic level, the anomaly is the carriage itself, a vintage collector's item
04:37created in the early 20th century in England.
04:39It appears to be in terrible condition, rusty with damaged tires and torn upholstery, but
04:44you get the sense that if you refurbished it, you'd be able to get a pretty penny off of
04:48it on the secondary market, and our friend in the opening case study found out the hard
04:52way that the risk really didn't equal the reward.
04:55Most people have seen enough horror movies that they wouldn't feel the drive to naturally
04:59approach a post-Victorian baby carriage in a state of disrepair, but when observed directly,
05:04the carriage has a frighteningly powerful cognitohazardous effect.
05:07Again, I must stress that this is only the case when you directly view the carriage in
05:12physical space.
05:13After all, what benefit would a Venus flytrap have from attracting flies to photos of itself?
05:18When the carriage enters your sightline, if you haven't trained your cognitohazardous
05:22resistance level, you'll feel a strong desire to approach the carriage and get a closer
05:26look.
05:27Even if you know in your heart that something is very wrong here, you'll keep putting one
05:31foot in front of the other.
05:32If you aren't able to break yourself out of this, you'll soon find yourself reaching
05:36out to take the carriage by the handlebars.
05:38You might even hear the sounds of weak, pained crying inside the carriage already at this
05:42point.
05:43And the second your hands touch the metal of those handlebars, the secondary anomalous
05:48effect will begin.
05:49A baby will manifest inside the ruined carriage, one in an extremely distressing state.
05:54Sallow, diseased skin, mottled with cuts, bruises, and sores.
05:58Hollow eyes and puckered cheeks, betraying advanced stages of starvation.
06:02Thin limbs, some of which look swollen at the joints and twisted at wrong angles, all
06:08of the signs of advanced cruelty and neglect, burbling and weeping in the dark of the carriage.
06:14People lucky enough to have survived the experience, if you can call the state that they now live
06:18in lucky, have described feeling a deep, almost unquenchable well of sadness open up
06:23within them.
06:24In a manner not dissimilar to the monumental shift in priorities people experience upon becoming
06:29parents, they report that their mind reorders itself in order to put this pitiful creature
06:33on the ultimate pedestal.
06:35Their grip around the carriage's handlebars would become bone-crushingly tight, and they
06:39begin walking the carriage around in circles, gently cooing to the baby within.
06:43All this time, while their mind was staunch in the belief that they were doing the right
06:47thing, they were being eaten alive.
06:50Foundation researchers, myself included, have seen it happen during tests.
06:54The victim of SCP-382 would begin to experience the signs of physical degradation, slowly but
07:00surely getting sicker, thinner, even visibly older, as though someone had hit the fast-forward
07:05button on their personal timeline.
07:07And as the life force of the victim drained, the baby and carriage appear to both be the
07:12beneficiaries.
07:13Over time, the rust will begin to flake and fall off the chassis of the carriage, revealing
07:18beautiful, shimmering chrome underneath.
07:20The tires on the carriage's wheels would inflate themselves, healing punctures in the rubber.
07:25The upholstery of the carriage will transform into a more luxurious material, and a velvet
07:29cushion to support the baby will appear inside.
07:32This anomalous glow-up will also extend to the baby itself.
07:36Bruises and injuries would disappear over time, and the baby will return to a healthy
07:40weight.
07:41Limbs will crack back into place, and any signs of visible neglect will simply wash away.
07:46Even the previously inconsolable sobbing coming from the carriage will be replaced by cheerful
07:51giggling.
07:52If you are one of the victims, you won't be feeling so cheerful at this point.
07:56You'll look around 40 years older than you started, and those will appear to have been
08:00an extremely rough 40 years.
08:02Your body will be a twisted, rickety mess with wrinkled, liver-spotted skin, and eyes that
08:07seem to communicate an almost impossible tiredness.
08:10It will have felt like you've been walking this unfortunate baby around for decades, when in
08:15actuality to this point, nobody has ever survived more than two hours of this process.
08:20When the victim eventually, inevitably keels over and dies, the carriage will vanish, a
08:25defense mechanism to prevent it from ever being tied to the death of the previous victim.
08:30Over the course of half an hour, all of the improvements made to the carriage and the baby
08:33within will revert back to the same decrepit and damaged state that will soon attract its
08:38next victim.
08:39The image of the baby will flicker in and out of existence throughout this process.
08:43This led many here at the Foundation to speculate that this part of the anomaly was just some
08:48kind of hologram created to lure in victims for the carriage itself.
08:52Our later studies would find out that no, this was not in fact the case.
08:56Foundation researchers are all about testing the limits to gain a greater understanding,
09:00like a ship captain endeavoring to find every rock in the harbor with the bottom of his boat.
09:04As soon as both eyewitness accounts and initial tests seemed to confirm that nobody ever survived
09:09more than two hours of contact with the SCP-382 carriage, researchers immediately began pondering
09:15on whether the right circumstances could be created to make a victim last longer.
09:20Nobody could clear an anomalous individual to make contact with the carriage, but given that
09:24it seemed that the carriage drained the life force of its victims, the next step was obvious.
09:28What if they could find someone with more life force than the carriage could drain in two hours?
09:33That's what led them to a D-class named Jim Randall.
09:37Before being convicted on two counts of murder for the killings of his young wife and the
09:41man he believed she was having an affair with, he'd been a personal trainer with an impeccable
09:45level of physical fitness.
09:46He maintained this fitness regimen in the prison gym before being headhunted by the Foundation
09:51as a member of D-class personnel.
09:53His impressive physical health, plus the fact that he was still only in his mid-twenties,
09:57made him an ideal candidate for the latest SCP-382 experiment.
10:02He was brought into the testing chamber and told to approach the carriage and grab it by
10:06the handle.
10:07Of course, thanks to the anomalous effects of the carriage, he didn't actually need to
10:10be told.
10:11He approached and grabbed it before doing exactly what everyone else did.
10:15He walked around in a circle with the carriage, cooing and muttering comforting words to the
10:19seemingly injured baby inside.
10:21Then, as the researchers started a stopwatch, the degradation began to take place.
10:26As everyone had seen so many times before, Jim began losing muscle definition and physical
10:31coordination.
10:32It was a disturbing thing to see a young man who'd worked so hard to build himself over
10:36so many years getting drained away by the moment like a Capri Sun.
10:40However, Foundation researchers had long since learned to harden their heart against sites
10:44like this.
10:45But it did seem at least as though the Foundation's hypothesis was paying off.
10:49At the rate that Jim was degrading, it looked like he'd survive at least a little longer
10:53than two hours.
10:54And, really.
10:55How could they have known that one man's inordinate survival would lead to a number of other people's
11:00deaths?
11:01As the two-hour point was closing in, Jim looked a little like he'd drank from the wrong
11:05grail, an almost mummified walking corpse, lumbering forwards and trying to keep up his
11:11careful death march.
11:12The carriage had returned to its pristine condition, and the baby inside was happy and
11:16healthy.
11:17Nobody had ever seen the anomaly in such good condition while its victim was still alive,
11:21and even fewer people were expecting what would happen next.
11:25There was a horrendous wailing sound coming from the testing chamber that Jim didn't seem
11:29to register.
11:30He just kept walking as the carriage rattled and shook.
11:33Something was happening to the baby.
11:35It started twisting and growing, its limbs stretching out, the trunk of its body extending, and its
11:40head getting bigger and bigger, until it looked like the huge, grimacing face of the moon, its
11:45mouth lined with shark-like fangs.
11:48As the researchers were pressing the panic buttons to call in the guards and mobile task
11:52forces, the baby clamped its jaws around Jim Randall's desiccated head.
11:56It began choking down the unfortunate former physio, until only his shoes were disappearing
12:01down its throat.
12:02But even with nothing left of Jim, the baby was still hungry, and could sense that there were
12:07other potential meals nearby.
12:10The monstrous baby crawled through the testing chamber and ripped off the door, spilling out
12:14into the observation room.
12:16Most researchers were able to flee in time, but two weren't so lucky.
12:20It grabbed them with its freakishly long limbs, dragging them towards its face and messily
12:24eating them alive, its body becoming more pristine with every victim it devoured.
12:29Many who survived the incident claimed that they had had nightmares about the creature for
12:33weeks afterwards, even the ones who'd worked with hostile entities before.
12:37Several guards burst in after that with assault rifles, and unleashed on the mutant baby.
12:42It sustained damage until its body flickered away, appearing as its regular, sick, emaciated
12:47form in the now-damaged crib.
12:49It was a lesson hard-earned.
12:51Nobody should be fed to this entity, and crucially, if it does end up feeding anyone, it's vital
12:56that they be dead within two hours to avoid a replay of this particular event.
13:00Because activating this more dangerous form requires an extremely involved process, it
13:04hasn't affected the carriage's Euclid containment class.
13:07Because the cognitohazardous effect of the anomaly is only activated by being viewed directly,
13:12it remains under eternal watch from a security camera inside the room.
13:15With this anomaly in containment, we can only hope that there aren't other instances of SCP-382
13:20out there, lurking in the dark, waiting to feed.
13:23So, if you encounter a baby carriage out in the wild and hear a distressed crying coming
13:28from within, it's generally a good policy to go help.
13:31I can only hope you don't get punished for it.
13:34Check out SCP-674, The Exposition Gun Makes Nintendo Real Life, for more on how the anomalous
13:40can hide behind the innocent.
