00:00:00Calvin Shepard really dialing up a lot of pressures on first down, run blitzes, right?
00:00:05How can we find a way to slant that offensive line, maybe find a gap up front, get a guy
00:00:09on the edge?
00:00:10I think that time it was Joe Bocci, the linebacker, coming off the edge,
00:00:13which really forced Washington back to the middle of that field where all your help is coming from.
00:00:18So seeing some creativity out of here preseason two from Calvin Shepard in that defense.
00:00:23Using the depth on the line now, Ahmed Hassanin has come on as pressure comes again,
00:00:28and that's scraped off the ground by Allen, who's thrown ahead to the line of scrimmage.
00:00:33Mackay's window was in on the play and it's third down coming up.
00:00:39Nice play, nice play call there from Calvin Shepard.
00:00:42You drop into, Jason, because this ball's secured.
00:00:45I wonder.
00:00:46I looked at my time, it was low.
00:00:48Yeah, that's incomplete.
00:00:51See Dan Campbell getting ready to throw a flag, throw that challenge flag, but man, that's close.
00:00:56It was basically no gain anyway.
00:00:59Right.
00:01:00Probably not worth it.
00:01:01But we saw the review at the end of the first half.
00:01:04So that's false.
00:01:05Our movement at the line, and here comes the marker.
00:01:08Center got a little jumpy that time.
00:01:1361, Good-Jones rocking a little bit.
00:01:17Julian Good-Jones, fourth year man out of Iowa State.
00:01:2061 on the off-air.
00:01:21Five yards, two weeks from the previous down.
00:01:27Third down.
00:01:27Elevate your game day with a Detroit Lions suite or premium seating experience.
00:01:32Few options remain for this season.
00:01:34Enjoy luxurious amenities like all-inclusive food and beverage, reserved parking, and a private space to host clients, friends, or
00:01:40family.
00:01:41To secure your suite or learn more, visit DetroitLionsSuites.com or call 313-262-2222.
00:01:48Let's get a pass rush going here.
00:01:50Third and long.
00:01:51Field years back and go get the quarterback.
00:01:54Little movement at the line on the far side.
00:01:56Free play for Kaliak-Manis on the roll.
00:01:59That was more early.
00:02:00Kaliak-Manis wings it down the field and overthrows everybody.
00:02:05That is a 3-5 for Washington.
00:02:09And Derek Moore just a little bit, a little bit too quick, trying to get off, trying to get that
00:02:13pass rush going early.
00:02:25Offside on the defense, number nine.
00:02:28Five-yard pulling from the previous spot.
00:02:30Remained third down.
00:02:33It's always the biggest key on third and longs, too, Jason, is watch the football.
00:02:38Watch the football.
00:02:38You know the offense really has nothing to lose.
00:02:41Not much difference between third and 15 or third and 20 if you false start.
00:02:44But on that defensive side, I know we just talked about it.
00:02:48You want to peel those ears back and get to the quarterback.
00:02:51Most important thing, no free yardage for that offense.
00:02:54Third and 10 is a lot easier if you're that offense than third and 15.
00:02:58A lot more in play, play call-wise.
00:03:01Kaliak-Manis steps up, puts it left side, and it is on target for Antonio Williams.
00:03:06Climbing in front of Abney for a Washington first down, gain of 21.
00:03:12And a little bit of pressure.
00:03:13That's just a really nice contested 50-50 ball over the middle of the field.
00:03:18Going up, strong hands, bringing it down.
00:03:20Pretty good coverage by Keith Abney.
00:03:22I just don't think he got his head back in time to make a play on that football.
00:03:25But, man, that's one.
00:03:26If you're that defense, you're thinking third and 15.
00:03:28We've got to set in our sights.
00:03:30You give them third and 10.
00:03:31You just mentioned offense.
00:03:33You feel a little bit better about those situations.
00:03:35Big conversion there for Washington.
00:03:37That was Blake Miller's former teammate at Clemson, Antonio Williams, with the catch.
00:03:43And it is a run for Allen, who squeezes through the defensive line and picks up about eight.
00:03:50Ons a re-pay with the stop.
00:03:52That is a rare alley to run through for the Washington run game so far.
00:03:58That didn't look like he had much room either for Allen.
00:04:00It kind of looked like the defense had him hemmed up right about the line of scrimmage.
00:04:04Here's that shotgun run, going a little lateral.
00:04:07Nice shot by Allen just to find a little crease to get some positive yards.
00:04:10The all-time leading rusher now at Penn State, Katron Allen.
00:04:15As they'll bring in Trey McKitty, the tight end, to attach him to the formation.
00:04:20Seen to Woski over the top of him.
00:04:22Kaliak Manis dropping back to throw.
00:04:26And he does have a first down.
00:04:28Pressure was coming from Ben Stilley, but he was laid around the corner.
00:04:31And Bradley has a first down.
00:04:34And that's pretty clockwork.
00:04:36Anytime you get an eight, nine-yard gain off of a first down run, everybody on that defense is probably
00:04:42thinking,
00:04:42okay, we've got to tighten up a little bit.
00:04:44We've got to protect this line of scrimmage, Washington that time.
00:04:47David Blatt with a nice play call just to go back to the play-action pass,
00:04:50find a nice little comeback route for a first down inside the red zone.
00:04:59Allen changing direction, and he is blown up and dropped.
00:05:03Dan Jackson came in like a house of fire late at the end of that play that set up second
00:05:09down.
00:05:09And it's a safety room that's thin with the injuries to Kirby Joseph and Brian Branch.
00:05:16So Dan Campbell's talked about looking for flexibility and variability of guys who can play corner and safety.
00:05:22Yeah, we've seen a lot of guys take some reps, not only in preseason games, but the practices as well.
00:05:28And, you know, Chuck Clark's a veteran who's got a lot of experience in that secondary room.
00:05:32Thomas Harper, a guy who also started a lot of games.
00:05:35But Coach said, hey, we want to see Christian Isian.
00:05:37We want to see some of these other guys not only play in that corner with Lucky Dare,
00:05:41but not only play in that corner slot position, but with the injuries that you mentioned, Jason.
00:05:45And you're going to have to play a little musical chairs there, I think, to begin the season to see
00:05:49who the best four guys,
00:05:50who the best five guys, if you're going to try to play a lot more of Nickel,
00:05:53which Kelvin Shepard has kind of hinted at this year, being more multiple on that defense.
00:05:58It might take a couple games into the regular season to find who that best crew is
00:06:02and how well they play together.
00:06:04It could also depend on the matchup week to week, how much of that you play.
00:06:08As well as it's third down and ten.
00:06:11Reynolds is on in the backfield and a four wide for Washington.
00:06:14And we have movement at the line.
00:06:16This should be five against the commanders.
00:06:19Number 16.
00:06:21That Caliak man has moved.
00:06:24Remains third down.
00:06:28Don't see that a lot from the quarterbacks.
00:06:30Quarterbacks are usually the guys that remember the snap count better than anybody.
00:06:33But, yeah, you can see them leaning a little bit.
00:06:36Try to go hard counts, third and long.
00:06:38We just got a false offsides on the previous third down, right?
00:06:42I know I have baseball on the brain, but that's a balk.
00:06:45It looks like a balk.
00:06:48It's tough.
00:06:49It's tough when you're the quarterback that you're the one guy that doesn't remember the snap count.
00:06:53When you're the only one that literally speaks in the huddle.
00:06:56It's a tough deal.
00:06:57It's tough.
00:06:57Third and 15.
00:06:59Caliak man has blindside hit.
00:07:01He did get it away.
00:07:02And he's got it for Antonio Williams.
00:07:05But, man, oh, man, Malcolm Rodriguez just set fire to Caliak Manis.
00:07:12Oh, boy, that was a shot from Malcolm Rodriguez.
00:07:16He didn't even try to disguise it either.
00:07:17He just came right.
00:07:18Good job by Malcolm, though, of not taking a penalty.
00:07:21How many penalties do we see with free rushers now?
00:07:23You get anywhere close to the head area, you go too low, it's a penalty.
00:07:27You go too high, it's a penalty.
00:07:29Nice job that time by Malcolm.
00:07:31Just a split second away from probably causing a sack fumble on that.
00:07:34And like we mentioned, Calvin Shepard, man, he's putting his guys in positions to go out there and make some
00:07:39plays today,
00:07:39whether it's dropping some guys in the coverage or bringing some of these max pressures.
00:07:44He's switching it up and really confusing that Washington offense.
00:07:47Got a handful of tackles for loss as Drew Stevens slides in the field goal from 27.
00:07:52Chris Spielman will join us when we come back to Ford Field.
00:07:57The third, we've got a buffer for between TJ and me now.
00:08:00Chris Spielman, great to see you.
00:08:02Good to see you, man.
00:08:03Welcome back.
00:08:04And the hardest-working play-by-play guy in the game.
00:08:06I love it.
00:08:07I'm glad to be here.
00:08:08Guys, everyone.
00:08:08Thank you.
00:08:09It's too much.
00:08:10It's too much of me.
00:08:12Chris, how you been?
00:08:13How's it?
00:08:13I've been great.
00:08:14And just excited about this year, obviously.
00:08:17Everybody was a little disappointed last year.
00:08:19But I think coming in, Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell had a vision about creating competition at all positions.
00:08:25And we've certainly done that, especially at the offensive line and in the defensive back room.
00:08:30And it's so hard to decide at the back end of the roster because you have a lot of guys
00:08:35who you'd like to have.
00:08:37Yeah.
00:08:37As you evaluate this roster, where are the places that you're most interested?
00:08:42Well, I think I'm like you watch what we've read about, right?
00:08:46The backup center, you talk about that, right?
00:08:49You talk about the guard competition that's going on.
00:08:53And Christian Mahogany has actually had a pretty good camp.
00:08:56So everything's been going pretty good.
00:08:58I really am interested in the corner position because it's such a difficult position to play.
00:09:03And the Lions will have it from the 26th year.
00:09:06What do you make of the first half so far?
00:09:09I thought some guys did some good things.
00:09:11I thought Luke Altmaier continues to impress.
00:09:13He comes in and throws the ball and knows where to go with the football.
00:09:17Obviously not to start you one.
00:09:19I don't think we don't.
00:09:20Unless you're a Washington fan.
00:09:21You're a defensive guy.
00:09:24But Devin White is a guy.
00:09:26There's a lot of intriguing guys in camp right now.
00:09:28But just with his reputation, his resume that he's had in this league,
00:09:32it seems like he's getting better every single day.
00:09:34What excites you the most about the potential that he brings to this defense?
00:09:38Well, he makes plays.
00:09:39I mean, every time you listen to the PA announcer, Devin White on a tackle.
00:09:43Devin White on a tackle.
00:09:44That was way down in Cincinnati.
00:09:46It was also done here in the first half.
00:09:48And he and Malcolm Rodriguez have a great competition going on.
00:09:51It's actually really good to see Malcolm come back and play a lot this game.
00:09:56Here's the call.
00:09:57There was a flag on the play on the run from Blackshear.
00:10:06There's also a marker on the sound.
00:10:10Jeez.
00:10:15I don't think.
00:10:19No audio.
00:10:20Why are you taking cover, Jason?
00:10:22I mean.
00:10:23It's all right.
00:10:24What I was bracing for
00:10:26was the feedback that's bound to happen after the big thud twice.
00:10:32Yes, there you go.
00:10:34It's going to go against the Lions, as you saw.
00:10:37So,
00:10:40first down and 15.
00:10:45Josh Dobbs, a little play action.
00:10:48He will throw it far side.
00:10:49And that is right on target.
00:10:51Tay Martin with the catch.
00:10:54Josh Dobbs, veteran presence, smart guy.
00:10:58Chris, what's your read on what he provides?
00:11:01Well, he's only been here a couple weeks and obviously had a slow start with the interception
00:11:04and the fumble, but to be able to throw this out cup at that deep of an angle to Tay
00:11:09Martin
00:11:10is actually outstanding.
00:11:11Josh is a trusted guy.
00:11:12He's won games in this league.
00:11:13Obviously, we saw what he can do with his feet.
00:11:16And he's got a pass with Drew Petson.
00:11:18Yeah, a couple of different stops.
00:11:19Yeah.
00:11:20Cleveland and Arizona.
00:11:21They keep turning up together.
00:11:22And Detroit.
00:11:23Well, by the way, for two weeks.
00:11:25That's right.
00:11:26Where I think Tennessee claimed him after practice for us in starting.
00:11:30So, Josh is a trusted guy and you have guys like Luke Altmyer and Josh Dobbs, people that
00:11:37you can trust.
00:11:38And, gosh forbid, nothing against him.
00:11:41You don't want to lose Jared Goff.
00:11:43And, you know, one thing that Josh does bring is the ability to run the football.
00:11:47Yeah, I saw that.
00:11:50Add some speed.
00:11:51Miles Frazier, a little slow getting off the field.
00:11:55See Jared right there is always in it.
00:11:56And, you know, you talk about Jared.
00:11:59We know what he does on the field, right?
00:12:01He's talking to Hank Fraley, our offensive line coach.
00:12:04Dan Skipper reporting for duty.
00:12:06I don't know if you guys remember that.
00:12:07Yes.
00:12:08Who could forget?
00:12:09But Jared is constantly in it and constantly talking and communicating with the coaches.
00:12:13And the importance of that relationship, not only with Drew Petson, but with Hank Fraley,
00:12:17is vital to a team's success.
00:12:20Go third and one here for Dobbs in the offense.
00:12:26It's a long one, and they will run it.
00:12:30It is Blackshear.
00:12:31It's a first down and then some to the 49.
00:12:36Chris, can you talk real quick just on Jared Goff and his relationship with Drew Petson?
00:12:42I always tell people that's the most important relationship in the building, in my opinion,
00:12:45is your play caller and quarterback being on the same page.
00:12:48But the fact that they challenge each other, there might be a play that's good.
00:12:53How can we make it better?
00:12:54They seem like they have that relationship.
00:12:56Well, I think as an offensive coordinator, you have to have an open mind, especially with
00:13:00the quarterback and the amount of success that Jared has had throughout his career,
00:13:04and especially the last few years.
00:13:07There's Drew Petsing.
00:13:09Dan Campbell was talking about Petsing earlier this week.
00:13:11He said, look, even if I say, hey, let's not run this, he's always got another solution.
00:13:15He's always got another creative answer, and that level of thinking about problem-solving
00:13:21as a play caller, Dan said he's really impressed.
00:13:24Well, the beautiful thing, and Drew hit on this in a feature I saw about him,
00:13:29was all the weapons that he's inherited when you come here with Jameer Gibbs,
00:13:33St. Brown, Jameson, LaPorta, and the list goes on and on.
00:13:37And his challenge is to make sure everybody gets the touches,
00:13:40which is an offensive coordinator's dream, quite frankly,
00:13:43compared to what he had at Arizona last year.
00:13:46It's not the same.
00:13:48Dobbs on the roll, and he gets it out to the far side.
00:13:52It is black, and he could not haul it in.
00:13:55So third down coming up.
00:13:57Yeah, you know, part of what you deal with as a coordinator, I would imagine,
00:14:02is simply figuring out the best times to do that and not just force-feeding it.
00:14:06Right. Well, I think everything—I believe this, and I think hopefully T.J. will concur with me.
00:14:13If he doesn't, then I have no idea what I'm talking about.
00:14:16But football is a game of match-ups, especially out there.
00:14:19So you always try to exploit the best match-up that you have.
00:14:22If you've got St. Brown in man-to-man coverage, he's going to win 9 out of 10.
00:14:26You have to always account for Jameer because of the speed.
00:14:29And Jameer can go anywhere, and he's going to have an unbelievable year.
00:14:34Ooh, a little juggle.
00:14:35Tay Martin was running free, and he could not reel it in mid-stride.
00:14:39Dobbs under pressure, got it away on the hands of Martin.
00:14:43Yeah, Washington brings the pressure.
00:14:45Looked like a miscommunication.
00:14:46A free runner right up the middle, and Josh Dobbs, veteran quarterback,
00:14:50you know you're going to take a shot.
00:14:51It's third down. I've got to make a play, right?
00:14:53And that's a nice shot by Josh Dobbs.
00:14:55Man, Tay Martin's going to want that one back because normally if you made that catch, it's a first down.
00:14:59Looked like you had a whole lot of grass to keep running as well.
00:15:02And Tay's had a really good camp, not only as a receiver and a blocker,
00:15:05but also on special teams. It's been outstanding.
00:15:08I did not disagree with your take on match-ups.
00:15:10Okay, about the match-ups, yes.
00:15:14This, again, is the most agreeable booth in preseason football.
00:15:17We learned that earlier.
00:15:18I'm starting to worry that I'm agreeing with you, Jason.
00:15:22It's a little bit of an issue for me right now.
00:15:24The only word I would lop off, and that is starting to.
00:15:26Starting to worry.
00:15:28Full worry. Full panic.
00:15:30Yeah.
00:15:31But I think when you look at this, and here's another weapon, by the way,
00:15:35and I don't usually do this, but Jack Fox, right, a guy that can flip the field,
00:15:39he's a luxury that we forget about a lot of times.
00:15:43You don't usually like punters is what you're saying.
00:15:45No, I can't stand them.
00:15:45That's actually great.
00:15:48McCaffrey on the return.
00:15:50He had a double back and get dropped at the 14-yard line.
00:15:54Troy Reeder came down to blow it up.
00:15:57There is a marker in.
00:15:59Which do you like more, punters or penalty flags?
00:16:04Long snappers.
00:16:07Literally, I mean, if you have a kid, teach them to long snap.
00:16:11You can play 10 years in a league and not hit anybody.
00:16:13Now they even protect them where they don't allow a guy to line up over.
00:16:17Old school field goal.
00:16:23We still have a mic issue.
00:16:25Let's do some sign language again.
00:16:26Roy Ellison.
00:16:27Legal block in the back.
00:16:30On the return team.
00:16:32Number 47.
00:16:33Yeah, okay.
00:16:34All right.
00:16:3510 yards.
00:16:38First down.
00:16:39All right.
00:16:40Time out, he also said.
00:16:42A word from our sponsors.
00:16:43Chris, you're sticking around because you haven't telestrated anything yet.
00:16:46Let's go.
00:16:46I'm ready.
00:16:47Yeah, get the pen ready.
00:16:48Look at that picture.
00:16:53Yeah.
00:16:53Who's got the better beard is the real question.
00:16:55A Jack.
00:16:57I told him he's never going to break the all-time tackle record.
00:17:00He's going to find himself hurt in the hallway one day.
00:17:02At Al Park Meyer Performance Center.
00:17:05Banana peel in front of the locker room.
00:17:08Sorry.
00:17:08Didn't mean that, Jack.
00:17:10I'm going to have Brad sign me to one-day contract, one-game contract.
00:17:14That is amazing.
00:17:15Get chicken-necked again, Jason.
00:17:17You know what I mean?
00:17:17I do know what you mean.
00:17:19Sam Hartman's going to hand it off.
00:17:21You didn't look to be very happy in that picture that we had of you.
00:17:25Yeah.
00:17:26You weren't terribly pleased at that moment.
00:17:28That's because an offensive lineman guard in particular was probably just holding him like they cheat and hold him all
00:17:34the time.
00:17:34They don't play within the rules.
00:17:35That's false.
00:17:36That's false.
00:17:37But Jack Campbell, fourth year out of Iowa.
00:17:41Yep.
00:17:41What do you think of his development at this moment in time in his career?
00:17:45He's really improved from day one.
00:17:48I love his effort.
00:17:50It's nonstop.
00:17:51He's a leader.
00:17:52He's no nonsense.
00:17:53And the reason why he's such a good leader is because he produces.
00:17:56You cannot lead by being the locker room lawyer guy.
00:17:59You have to lead by producing on the field, and that's what Jack does.
00:18:03Hartman a little high for Henry.
00:18:05And we'll check out our positional battle at linebacker brought to you by Frankenmuth Insurance.
00:18:12It's a room that you're trying to figure out who else after the starters.
00:18:16What do you make of the list here?
00:18:18Who stands out?
00:18:19First of all, you've got to be smart to play that position because you are, quote, unquote, the quarterback of
00:18:24the defense.
00:18:24You set the front.
00:18:25You make sure the communication of coverage.
00:18:28And who's going to make that, in my opinion, is who's going to excel on special teams.
00:18:32And all guys have done a great job on special teams.
00:18:35You're a backup linebacker.
00:18:36You need to be a 4-4 player.
00:18:40Skylar Gill-Howard with a good rush.
00:18:42A couple today.
00:18:43Markman's throw is overthrown.
00:18:45It is fourth down coming up.
00:18:47Abney on the coverage.
00:18:48Skylar Gill-Howard is a fun guy.
00:18:52Didn't even start in Division I, then went to Texas Tech and was a menace.
00:18:56Yeah, and watch him right here.
00:18:58The one thing he does really well is he turns his shoulders and gets himself skinny in the hole.
00:19:03See this?
00:19:03Watch him get those shoulders and that 50 pointed towards the sideline.
00:19:07When his number 50 gets pointed toward the sideline, that gives a small target for the offensive lineman to hit.
00:19:12Now, he's really good.
00:19:13His effort's been outstanding.
00:19:14He and Wingo come in with a small rush package that's been pretty effective this game it has.
00:19:19It's good to see Wingo back, too.
00:19:22Greg Dorch, Otto Turner, step through.
00:19:24He is into commander territory.
00:19:284-0-1 to go in the third.
00:19:30Dorch is fired up.
00:19:33He's stocking.
00:19:35He can make guys miss.
00:19:36He can run you over.
00:19:38Chris, I'm being told that because you used the tele-crater, we're going to send you on your way.
00:19:43You can stay quick enough.
00:19:44We'll stay as long as you want, Chris.
00:19:46We do leave you with Lions preseason, the home game.
00:19:51Real low prices.
00:19:53And by Cure Auto Insurance.
00:19:56Great driving deserves great rates.
00:19:58Switch to Cure Auto Insurance to save today.
00:20:03Josh Dobbs stays on with a short field.
00:20:06From the 48, he'll go play action.
00:20:08And he'll lob a screen to Travion Williams.
00:20:12Catch and run, Williams.
00:20:13Across the 25 and a hurdle down to the 23.
00:20:17To Travion Williams.
00:20:194-0-1.
00:20:23It's like Michael Nese is down behind the play.
00:20:30Yeah, maybe got rolled up on a little bit there.
00:20:33Anytime offensive lineman, you get out in space.
00:20:37You've got to be careful of those bodies flying from your left, from the right, from behind you.
00:20:42Great play call, but take a look at Nese here.
00:20:46Gets a block downfield.
00:20:48And just kind of collides a little bit.
00:20:51It's Quantra's night and senior.
00:20:54Yeah.
00:20:54Look at the play action pass, though.
00:20:56Everybody's thinking run.
00:20:57Everybody's thinking pass.
00:20:58Okay, we've got to drop.
00:20:59Get the offensive line out in space.
00:21:02Nice job getting some positive yards.
00:21:05Nese will come off the field under his own power.
00:21:08And we'll step aside.
00:21:10Michael Nese, third-year man, hobbled off the field.
00:21:12So the offensive line shapeshifts here on a 21-yard gain off the screen.
00:21:20Seth McLaughlin is in at center.
00:21:23And we have movement.
00:21:27On the offense, number 74, five-yard penalty from the previous spot, first down.
00:21:35That is the way it goes in preseason football, right?
00:21:39You get a lot of times, unfortunately.
00:21:41You don't want it to.
00:21:42I mean, you just come off a nice player.
00:21:44Good gain on first down.
00:21:46And boy, turn that mic off.
00:21:47Yeah, I liked it more when his mic didn't work.
00:21:50Yeah, first and 10.
00:21:51Now you've got a first and 15.
00:21:56It's a handoff for Williams, who just had that big hit off the screen.
00:22:00It'll be a game four.
00:22:02And second down coming up for the Lions.
00:22:05This offense, you know, top five offense last year in the NFL.
00:22:09Scoring offense, total offense as well.
00:22:12Drew Petty takes over as the offensive coordinator.
00:22:17And by all accounts, as you and Chris were talking about,
00:22:20the relationship with Jared Goff is one that is going to thrive on creativity of pushing each other.
00:22:27Yeah, challenging each other, right?
00:22:29And nice delivery there from Josh Dobbs.
00:22:33Getting the ball out of his hands quick.
00:22:35Lucky Jackson with the catch.
00:22:37Third down on the way.
00:22:38Yes, that relationship is so important.
00:22:40You have to be on the same page.
00:22:41You have to be in unison.
00:22:42You can't have a quarterback in the huddle where he hears a play call and,
00:22:45you know, I was calling this, you know what I mean?
00:22:47So it's like you have to have these guys, you have to have these guys on the same page.
00:22:51It sounds like all accounts so far, Drew Petsing and Jared Goff,
00:22:55the way that they've been communicating, the way they've been challenging each other.
00:22:58Like we said, you might have a good play.
00:22:59How can we make it better?
00:23:01Lions are in the Heinz red zone.
00:23:04Josh Dobbs in at quarterback for this drive.
00:23:09Cunningham in motion.
00:23:10Dobbs, scan it, firing.
00:23:12Got it, first down.
00:23:14Lucky Jackson, 2-10, first and goal, Lions.
00:23:183-2, Lucky Jackson.
00:23:20The NHL Lions, the three.
00:23:24Look at Josh Dobbs, the protection first and foremost.
00:23:26Miles Frazier moving out to left guard, get some help.
00:23:30From Mason Miller coming in, seal that, open up the throwing lane.
00:23:33And Josh Dobbs, you can tell that was about his third or fourth read, that play.
00:23:37Going to the backside, didn't like what he saw.
00:23:39Find somebody open.
00:23:40Third down, you can keep the sticks moving, especially down here in the red zone.
00:23:43That's the difference in these games, whether you have to settle for a field goal
00:23:45or try here to put yourself in a position to score a touchdown.
00:23:48He's changing the play here down to six on the play clock, and it is a run.
00:23:53Travion Williams crashing through for half of it.
00:23:57Second and goal from inside the five.
00:24:00Now this is where the focus on the offensive line becomes sharper.
00:24:07Limited space down here in the red zone, especially when you get to that five-yard line.
00:24:11You have to be able to run the football.
00:24:12You have to.
00:24:13There's just so many limited options in what you can do in the passing game or the play-action game.
00:24:19Everything is just so compacted together.
00:24:21So I wouldn't be surprised here to see maybe another read option.
00:24:25But Josh Dobbs likes something on the backside.
00:24:27Maybe see him use his legs again to try to get in this end zone.
00:24:30Dan Campbell didn't like the formation, calling the timeout.
00:24:34Hey, you can tell right away.
00:24:35Turned out Detroit.
00:24:36This is their first time out of the half.
00:24:38Coach Campbell saw that.
00:24:43This is where we live.
00:24:45Where a major breakthrough meets the morning coffee.
00:24:49Where a game-changing idea hits the game-winning shot.
00:24:53Where round-the-clock research assures more time away.
00:24:56Where we drive, explore, and discover.
00:24:59Where devoted fans roar, and good times roll.
00:25:03Where our heart, soul, and science come to life.
00:25:07This is what we live for.
00:25:09Because this is where we live.
00:25:11We are Henry.
00:25:14So out of the timeout, it is second and goal for the Lions from the five.
00:25:19Dobbs out of the gun.
00:25:24Right ahead, Travion Williams looking for that front door.
00:25:28And he is down maybe a yard short.
00:25:31Lions on the carry-through.
00:25:33Let's do it again, right?
00:25:34Yeah, why not?
00:25:35And any time you have a threat of Josh Dobbs, I know he doesn't keep this football,
00:25:38but it slows down the backside of that defense.
00:25:41I'm not a big fan, normally, of running the ball out of shotgun.
00:25:44Especially when you're in this part of the field, or third and short, or fourth and short.
00:25:48Unless you have a quarterback that is a threat to pull it.
00:25:50Josh Dobbs already busted off the 50-yard touchdown.
00:25:53So, with him in shotgun, he's got a threat to pull it.
00:25:56It's going to keep that defense honest on the backside.
00:25:59Williams again, this time he is in.
00:26:01Touchdown, Lions.
00:26:08He was not going to be denied.
00:26:14Right back to it.
00:26:15Little read option.
00:26:1756, he out slows him down on the backside, though.
00:26:20It doesn't allow him to collapse down the line.
00:26:21And really nice shot by the interior of that offense line.
00:26:24Look at the double teams, the pad level.
00:26:26You know that defense is going to be coming.
00:26:28Especially when it comes to the secondary and the linebackers.
00:26:30They're going to be coming downhill, meeting you fast.
00:26:32Keep those pad level down.
00:26:34Keep the feet churning.
00:26:35You always tell offensive linemen, if you score,
00:26:38if you end up with your feet in the end zone,
00:26:39most times a running back is going to end up with his feet in the end zone, too.
00:26:42Good six points.
00:26:43Yeah, that's what happened with Colby Soarsdahl on that play.
00:26:47And Dan Campbell, again, you said it, TJ.
00:26:50He didn't like the formation or the call, whatever it was.
00:26:52Sometimes what came out of that timeout was two rugged runs straight up the middle.
00:26:59Attitude plays.
00:27:00That's what that was.
00:27:01And sometimes you don't necessarily have to call timeout
00:27:03because you don't like your own formation.
00:27:05Sometimes you make a play call based off what you think the defense is going to do.
00:27:09Now if the defense gives us a different look, hey, this play is not going to work.
00:27:12Let's not waste the play.
00:27:13Let's not burn it.
00:27:14Let's call timeout.
00:27:15Let's resettle.
00:27:15Especially when you're at that area of the football field, those plays are so valuable.
00:27:20How many times is a three- or four-point difference in most of these NFL games, right?
00:27:25So that's just the difference between scoring a touchdown or having a bad play
00:27:28and having to settle for a field goal.
00:27:30That time Dan Campbell said, hey, we're running this football.
00:27:32Even if they didn't get it there, they were going for it again.
00:27:34I promise you that.
00:27:35I mean, no matter what country you're watching in,
00:27:38you know that if you get down to the five-yard line or the one-yard line,
00:27:41you've got to punch it in.
00:27:42Whether you're in Saginaw and Toledo or you're in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Brazil, Canada,
00:27:49have you figured out all the time changes from last week's opener?
00:27:52No, I haven't.
00:27:53You haven't?
00:27:54I know what time it is in Canada.
00:27:56Most places.
00:27:58What time is it in Prince Edward Island?
00:28:01You got that one?
00:28:02Is that the east side?
00:28:03I'm sure same time as us.
00:28:05To be clear, TJ was looking at his watch as though the real local time.
00:28:13You think 2.15?
00:28:15I don't know.
00:28:15Okay.
00:28:16I know what time it is in Toronto.
00:28:17I'll tell you that.
00:28:18But anyway, the Lions TV network extends a special thanks to all of our affiliates
00:28:23in Michigan, Northern Ohio, and abroad, and at 2.13 p.m. in Toronto.
00:28:30We have one second remaining in the third quarter.
00:28:34I always know what time it is in winter.
00:28:36You did?
00:28:36Yeah, you did.
00:28:37There it was.
00:28:38It's penalty time.
00:28:39Yeah.
00:28:40Into the fourth quarter preseason.
00:28:41It's flag o'clock.
00:28:44Illegal formation on the kicking, on the receiving team, number 19.
00:28:48That five-yard penalty will be enforced from the end of the run.
00:28:53First out.
00:28:54Illegal formation on the kickoff.
00:28:56On the receiving team.
00:28:58On the receiving team.
00:29:01I, it's been a year now with the new kicking rules.
00:29:05Yeah.
00:29:07Are you still hazy?
00:29:08I still struggle.
00:29:09I still struggle.
00:29:09I still struggle.
00:29:12They're confusing.
00:29:14Yeah, it's one of those things, though, as we all watch more games of this,
00:29:19and you see some of the quirks get called, that's why the explanations are helpful.
00:29:25You'll see it develop.
00:29:28Motion man Jacoby Jones.
00:29:30It's a play fake from Caliak Manis.
00:29:32And Ethan Caliak Manis is incomplete to Cager, who put it on the ground here at Ford Field,
00:29:38where the home team has the lead after three.
00:29:4214-10, the Lions over the Commanders.
00:29:47Malene, last year coming back from injury, you said you felt like you were mentally there,
00:29:51but physically not where you wanted to be.
00:29:53However, coming into this season, you're exactly where you want to be.
00:29:58Feeling back to yourself.
00:29:59How relieving of a feeling is it knowing that there's nothing holding you back?
00:30:02Say the last part again.
00:30:03So how relieving is it knowing that nothing's holding you back this year?
00:30:06It's very good.
00:30:07It feels very good.
00:30:08I had a full offseason under me.
00:30:10I was able to squat, bench, jump, do whatever I needed to do.
00:30:14And it helped a lot with my mental and me physically, and now I feel back to who I was.
00:30:19So it feels good.
00:30:21And it's your sixth season with the Lions, and you've become more of a vocal leader,
00:30:25especially with the rookies.
00:30:27Why was there such a point of emphasis for you?
00:30:29Well, I feel like I'm one of the older guys now, and that's what helped me out.
00:30:33I'm not the most vocal guy, but people talking to me and telling me what I should be
00:30:37or should not be doing helped a lot rather than somebody showing by example
00:30:41because you can show anything, but it might not be the right example.
00:30:44So I started using my voice a little bit more too, and I just feel like an older guy now.
00:30:48I've never really been one of those, but I feel better doing it this way.
00:30:52Thanks, Aleem.
00:30:55So thanks to Aleem McNeil for stopping by.
00:30:58Good to have him healthy.
00:30:59Nick Nash, who was a phenomenal college football wide receiver at San Jose State,
00:31:06just hit for 55 from Caliak Manis down the sideline.
00:31:11And now Washington's at the 20.
00:31:14Katron Allen has driven back.
00:31:17Nowoski was in there, but also Skyler Gill-Howard is the one who made the play.
00:31:21He has been buzzing all over the tape again.
00:31:24Yeah, we've mentioned his name a number of times today,
00:31:27not only in the run game, but when it comes to getting some pressure.
00:31:30Even that last second down conversion that we just saw go for that go route 55-yard.
00:31:34Skyler Gill-Howard was in the back.
00:31:36He was in the backfield.
00:31:37He was putting pressure on the quarterback, and that play that –
00:31:40he's going to get credit for that tackle.
00:31:41But like you mentioned, the first name, Trevor Nowoski,
00:31:43was really the reason why that play didn't work.
00:31:46He set the edge on the front side, didn't get driven out,
00:31:49forced everything back to his teammates.
00:31:51But that number 50, man, he is – Skyler Gill-Howard is going to be a name to watch
00:31:54as we get to the end of preseason here.
00:31:58And you see how loud it's gotten here, and it affects Washington.
00:32:02That was a delay of game.
00:32:03Delay of game in the office.
00:32:04Six to five.
00:32:06I was going to say, during the Aleem McNeil interview,
00:32:09maybe the best sign there, other than him being back and healthy,
00:32:11was he couldn't hear Patty's first question.
00:32:14Because it was so loud in here.
00:32:16He'd be surprised.
00:32:17I mean, look at the crowd.
00:32:18I mean, nobody's overreacting here, saying,
00:32:21hey, we're sold out, 75,000 people.
00:32:23But fans love football, man.
00:32:25Everybody's excited to see this team.
00:32:26And going back to Aleem McNeil,
00:32:28if there's two guys I'm really excited to watch this year,
00:32:31him being one of the guys on defense,
00:32:33just coming back healthy off that injury.
00:32:36And then you could say the same for offense, I think, with same report.
00:32:39I know he's banged up a little bit right now.
00:32:40It doesn't seem to be a long-term concern.
00:32:42But those two guys, I think,
00:32:44are really, really primed to have some big years for this team.
00:32:48Kelly Ekmanis, down the middle, it's Nash again.
00:32:51You saw how much of a loss it is without Sam McNeil last year
00:32:56when you don't have him.
00:32:57It's a hip this time around.
00:32:58But you just become so much more flexible in formation.
00:33:03Well, especially with what Drew Petsing's specialty is.
00:33:06Look at what Trey McBride and the success that he had in Arizona.
00:33:09And I would argue, look, I know missing Kirby Joseph
00:33:11and Brian Branch in the second half of last year
00:33:14really hurt that defense at that safety spot.
00:33:16I thought losing Sam LaPorte and Brock Wright were equally,
00:33:19if not even more important,
00:33:21to kind of where this team started to hit that kind of rut
00:33:25in the season last year.
00:33:26Kelly Ekmanis just got that away.
00:33:29And then Jacoby Jones went through the car wash.
00:33:31He got battered.
00:33:34Trevor Nowoski was in there as well again.
00:33:36But it's a tight team's official, immersive partner.
00:33:41We have a headset to show you.
00:33:44That is impressive.
00:33:44It's a 360-degree view of what you're looking at of the game.
00:33:51I wish it was working right now
00:33:53because that sounds like a lot of fun.
00:33:55I mean, could you imagine seeing behind you?
00:33:58You're starting to freak me out a little bit,
00:34:00but that sounds like fun.
00:34:02But whether you're at the game or not,
00:34:04it puts you right there.
00:34:07I've seen this in action.
00:34:10And it's like...
00:34:11Impressive?
00:34:12You feel it.
00:34:13You feel the game.
00:34:14It's wild, actually.
00:34:17So you can register at www
00:34:19as the return goes across the 30.L1VE.com.
00:34:27It's not a broadcast, to be clear.
00:34:29It's like being there.
00:34:32You can take a seat.
00:34:33You can look around.
00:34:34You can feel the crowd.
00:34:35Fans across Michigan can join the experience
00:34:38with your own VR headset,
00:34:41if you'd like to join in.
00:34:44It's wild.
00:34:45I'm in.
00:34:46Look at his cameras.
00:34:48Hell, he is.
00:34:49You get every view.
00:34:49They have him around Ford Field
00:34:51to put you in the moment.
00:34:55If you've joined in,
00:34:57you're feeling that right now.
00:34:58Altmeier with a handoff.
00:34:59On first down to Raheem Blackshear.
00:35:02And it'll be second down and medium.
00:35:05Dan Campbell was talking to us about a guy like Jared Goff
00:35:09and a guy like Jameer Gibbs and the talent on the outside.
00:35:13And, you know, he was talking about Gibbs specifically,
00:35:15and he said,
00:35:16this guy could be a career changer for an offensive lineman.
00:35:20I thought it was interesting,
00:35:21the prism that he saw it through, right?
00:35:24For an offensive line that's trying to improve,
00:35:27let these guys be career makers for you.
00:35:30Jared Goff, Jameer Gibbs, et cetera.
00:35:31And just give them some time to make some plays.
00:35:34That time,
00:35:36not what you're looking for,
00:35:37but yes, as offensive lineman,
00:35:39I'd be blindy if I said that,
00:35:40you know, guys like Aaron Rodgers,
00:35:42and I got to play with Matthew Stafford for a couple years,
00:35:44even with some good running backs,
00:35:46they make you look better as an offensive line.
00:35:47And that gives you more motivation to where,
00:35:50hey, if I just cover these guys up,
00:35:51there's so much potential to have an explosive play
00:35:55every single time you snap the ball.
00:35:57And I think that, obviously,
00:35:59with Jameer Gibbs,
00:36:00with Jared Goff,
00:36:01with the skills players that are on this offense
00:36:04that we're going to be seeing in a couple weeks
00:36:05when the regular season starts,
00:36:06that somebody moved early.
00:36:08But that just gives you,
00:36:09it gives you that much more motivation
00:36:11as a big guy up front to,
00:36:12hey, let's just cover my guy up for a couple seconds.
00:36:15False star on the offense, 71.
00:36:18Five-yard corner from the previous spots.
00:36:20Four down.
00:36:22Gibbs and Goff and Amonraa, et cetera,
00:36:24were pitch perfect.
00:36:27Two.
00:36:30I would say that.
00:36:31Clever.
00:36:32I knew that.
00:36:33I knew your guy.
00:36:34No, no, no.
00:36:35It wasn't the set-up at all.
00:36:37No set-up.
00:36:39So, what do you come in at some point?
00:36:41You keep me on my toes, Jay.
00:36:42Oh, boy.
00:36:43Here we go again.
00:36:45A lot of movement.
00:36:46Flags everywhere.
00:36:47It's the United Nations.
00:36:48Come on.
00:36:49Got to lock in, boys.
00:36:49False star, number 65.
00:36:52Five-yard penalty from the previous spot.
00:36:55Third down.
00:36:56That's on McLaughlin.
00:36:58Got to lock in.
00:36:58You know, when Dan Campbell was talking about Jameer Gibbs, though,
00:37:01he said, look, you turn around at the end of the season,
00:37:03you go, he's a generational type of running.
00:37:08A hundred percent, he is.
00:37:10And I think that that's why maybe it took a little bit of time to get his contract deal done
00:37:16this training camp
00:37:17because they knew that there were some other guys that were going to have to sign.
00:37:20But they look at Jameer Gibbs as being a clear number one running back in the league.
00:37:26And I think he's earned that.
00:37:27And Dan Campbell hasn't been shy about it.
00:37:29He said we're going to count on him as being a, I can't remember what he said, workhorse, bell cow,
00:37:34whatever you want to call running back, which is going to mean a lot of snaps.
00:37:37And just to think he's just going into year four, man,
00:37:39and all the success he's had already has been so impressive.
00:37:42Three Pro Bowls, three years with a pushing and shoving.
00:37:45Lucky Jackson draws a flag.
00:37:48It's Carlin Biggers on the coverage.
00:37:52Jackson had a step on him, and this is going to be a Lions first down.
00:37:57Yeah, a little bit too much contact that time.
00:37:59Pass interference on the defense, number 37.
00:38:02The ball will be placed in the foul.
00:38:05Automatic first down.
00:38:06Trying to create some separation.
00:38:08I can't see a lot there, but, you know, a little hand fighting going on.
00:38:16Anytime you can try to sell a penalty is just as good as if it happened or not.
00:38:23Didn't see a lot.
00:38:24Maybe there was a little bit there before we kind of zoomed in there.
00:38:27But either way, take the free first down.
00:38:29But that's the type of penalty that gets you a fresh set of downs,
00:38:32and you would in the regular season hand it off to Jameer Gibbs.
00:38:36Get your four, five, six yards.
00:38:39I mean, he just changes drives with explosive plays.
00:38:42The speed that he has is just so incredible.
00:38:44Whether he's getting the ball in the backfield, whether he's lining up a slot receiver.
00:38:48Look at the burst that he has, man.
00:38:50It's just so impressive.
00:38:51I think one play I go back to last year that really stood out was that overtime game against the
00:38:57Giants.
00:38:57And, boom, he just, okay, we've let them hang around.
00:39:00Give me the ball.
00:39:01Give me right up the middle.
00:39:03Just let me go.
00:39:03And, boom, he takes it for the touchdown and ends the game.
00:39:05He's just so explosive and just so fun to watch.
00:39:08So much homerun potential as this is a way to Dominic Lovett, the second-year man, former seventh-round pick
00:39:14out of Georgia.
00:39:17Under 10 to go.
00:39:19How about this first three seasons?
00:39:20We love first three seasons comparisons, especially when they look like this.
00:39:26That is wild.
00:39:27The touchdowns.
00:39:28My goodness.
00:39:29He's a machine, Jason.
00:39:31You nailed it.
00:39:32Homerun threat every single play.
00:39:34And you never know when it's going to happen.
00:39:35And that's why I think as an offensive lineman, it gives you that much more motivation because you'll hear certain
00:39:40play calls and you're saying,
00:39:42okay, if we get the right defense, man, this could be a big one.
00:39:44But you just never know when it's going to happen.
00:39:46Because Jameer Gitz literally could happen every single play.
00:39:50It doesn't matter if it's outside zone, a toss, a screen, a trap, a wham plate with him hitting the
00:39:56line of scrimmage at full speed.
00:39:58You know, if you just cover that guy up, if you cover the guy up in front of you for
00:40:01a split second, if you can get to the secondary,
00:40:03if you can get that second level, I'm sorry, the linebackers.
00:40:07And also, you've got to factor in the receivers, too.
00:40:09I know the receivers here.
00:40:10Amon Ross St. Brown, if you watch him block during some run plays, it is so impressive to see the
00:40:16skill that he has, the motivation that he has.
00:40:19Look, there's a lot of star receivers in this league that don't really want much to do with blocking guys
00:40:25and digging guys out
00:40:26or digging safeties out of the hole.
00:40:27Amon Ross is the complete opposite.
00:40:29Or don't care about the details as much as he does, which is through the roof as McCaffrey is back
00:40:35to receive on a fair catch.
00:40:36It's a 36-yard punt for Jack Fox.
00:40:39And Washington is pinned back.
00:40:42Luke McCaffrey.
00:40:44I played with Max McCaffrey.
00:40:46Well, I had said Max McCaffrey.
00:40:48You said there's so many McCaffrey special – sorry, skills guys.
00:40:52It was Max McCaffrey.
00:40:53But Luke McCaffrey himself is a heck of a player.
00:40:55You'll still get an interview by Meijer.
00:40:57Good life quality, real low prices.
00:41:00And by Cure Auto Insurance.
00:41:02Great driving deserves great rates.
00:41:05Switch to Cure Auto Insurance to save today.
00:41:09Derek Goff, among others, watching on today on the sideline.
00:41:14A bunch of starters did play the first quarter.
00:41:17Sam Hartman will be under center at the steering wheel for Washington to hand to Craig Reynolds.
00:41:22And what do you know?
00:41:23It's another penalty marker.
00:41:25There are two of them.
00:41:26I think they both saw the same thing.
00:41:29That's normally in the area.
00:41:32Holden on the offense.
00:41:34Number 79.
00:41:36There you go.
00:41:36From the previous spot.
00:41:38First down.
00:41:39The Prince today.
00:41:43Downstairs, Patty.
00:41:45Thanks, Jason.
00:41:46Edge rusher Eric O'Neal actually almost quit football after his freshman year at Long Island University.
00:41:52He redshirted, so he wasn't seeing the field.
00:41:54School wasn't going very well either.
00:41:56And then it was a big turning point for him where the new staff offered to pay for his summer
00:42:01school
00:42:01and let him stay on this team.
00:42:04He said it is something he thinks about a lot but sees it as a positive.
00:42:07Then he transferred to Rutgers and had a marvelous career.
00:42:10He was a tackle for loss specialist.
00:42:12Off the penalty, Hartman on the roll.
00:42:15He'll go sideline ball and he's got it away to Jacoby Jones.
00:42:21You know, O'Neal is a Staten Island kid, 23-year-old rookie.
00:42:26He had a pick six in practice earlier this week.
00:42:29Monday night.
00:42:29Yeah, Monday night they ran a pretty exaggerated scrimmage.
00:42:34A lot of different situations.
00:42:35And Eric O'Neal was really one name that I don't care who you follow that covers the Detroit Lions.
00:42:41Everybody was talking about the practice that he had.
00:42:44And had a good game against Cincinnati again last week.
00:42:47I know he's looking to add to it again today here in the fourth quarter.
00:42:50Jacoby Jones on the outside is bucked out of bounds by Roger McCreary.
00:42:59Here is O'Neal's rep.
00:43:04He's just, he's pretty savvy.
00:43:07I know if you look at him, you say he doesn't look like a big guy.
00:43:10But he's just watching him in practice.
00:43:13And last week against Cincinnati, a couple of those snaps, just his hand usage to me stood out.
00:43:17How can he create some separation from that offensive tackle or maybe a tight end if it's a run play?
00:43:22Going to keep an eye on him here, standing up on the outside closer to a screen in the 66.
00:43:28They'll run his direction.
00:43:29He got a hand on Reynolds who bounces to the outside.
00:43:33And forced the play to the fringe.
00:43:35And it's third down as Rakestraw took him out.
00:43:38It's fine.
00:43:39I don't know if he was held here.
00:43:40Just a little quick inside move.
00:43:42Right tackle kind of gets him around.
00:43:44Yeah.
00:43:45He kind of yanks.
00:43:46He kind of torched the body a little bit, even though he still had a chance.
00:43:49But anytime you, as a defensive lineman, you can get the backfield and create disruption.
00:43:53Even if you don't make the tackle, you're still buying an extra second for all your buddies to come up
00:43:58and support and help bring the ball carrier down as well.
00:44:01So still a good rep, even though he's not going to give credit for the tackle.
00:44:03That's probably a first down if he doesn't get a hand on Reynolds.
00:44:07This run is bottled up.
00:44:09It is O'Neal this time.
00:44:11He bursts through.
00:44:13And it's no game.
00:44:14Yeah.
00:44:15Take a look at the get-off.
00:44:17It's third down.
00:44:19Watch him lined up over the tight ends.
00:44:20Uh-huh.
00:44:20You're not going to block me.
00:44:21A little inside rip gets in the backfield.
00:44:25Good time for us to start talking about Eric O'Neal, huh?
00:44:28A couple of really nice plays in a row.
00:44:30Those are the things that not only your coaches, the evaluators are going to notice, but your teammates notice.
00:44:35Can I trust this guy to go out there and make a play in a big-time situation?
00:44:38He and Hassanine together there.
00:44:40Fourth down and two.
00:44:41Crowd as loud as it's been all day.
00:44:46It's a long two.
00:44:47More like three.
00:44:51Hartman, Reynolds, wheeling out.
00:44:54It's incomplete.
00:44:55And who with the pressure?
00:44:57Eric O'Neal got a hand on the arm and forced the turnover on downs.
00:45:03What a play.
00:45:04What a drive.
00:45:05Oh, my goodness.
00:45:06Three plays in a row.
00:45:0766.
00:45:08Eric O'Neal, not a sexy number for a defensive end, but if you can go make some plays like
00:45:15that, coming off the edge.
00:45:16Fourth down, got to have it.
00:45:17Chop, rip, get to the quarterback.
00:45:19There you go.
00:45:20In fact, the throw.
00:45:20There you go.
00:45:26Already access to seat selection and early access to single game and postseason ticket pre-sales.
00:45:33Just about that time.
00:45:35A couple weeks away from the opener, and then, I mean, it comes fast.
00:45:41It goes.
00:45:41It does.
00:45:43A lot of these guys talking to Panay Sewell saying, can you believe you're in year six already?
00:45:46He's like, man.
00:45:48He just flies.
00:45:50Wild what he's done.
00:45:52Altmaier has to try to break away, and he goes down.
00:45:55Sacked by Hurst.
00:45:56That's his second sack.
00:45:58A little chippiness with Williams at the end of the play, but a sack for Hurst.
00:46:03Yeah, just a blown assignment.
00:46:04Never.
00:46:05There's not one play in the playbook, whether it's run or play action, where you just let the defensive tackle
00:46:09go.
00:46:10So, I'm not going to put blame on any individual.
00:46:13Just the communication has to clean up up front.
00:46:16You cannot have those free runners in the backfield.
00:46:19If you're going to get beat, you can call it die a slow death, right?
00:46:22At least get beat late.
00:46:23Anytime a defensive tackle gets in the backfield that fast, that's a miscommunication.
00:46:27That is the fifth sack for Washington.
00:46:30Altmaier with time.
00:46:31That time, Malik Cunningham.
00:46:34On a Louisville with the catch to set up a third down and three.
00:46:38Just sat down right in the middle of the field and picked up 16.
00:46:41A nice job by Luke Altmaier that time at sitting, buying a little bit of extra time.
00:46:45Good job with the protection.
00:46:46And just a really nice route there by Malik Cunningham.
00:46:49Finding that open zone in the zone coverage and sitting down, finding that soft area to give your quarterback a
00:46:55big target.
00:46:56Sets up after a sack, which could be devastating a lot of times.
00:47:00Sets up a third and three here.
00:47:01So, really nice job between Altmaier and Cunningham.
00:47:03The Lions have been great on third down, over 60% for the day.
00:47:08Altmaier bailing and throwing it incomplete.
00:47:11He wanted Meeks again, who's been a favorite target of his.
00:47:14Altmaier ended up on the ground.
00:47:17You're going to play it like you would in the regular season?
00:47:19You're going to kick it?
00:47:20You're going to go for it?
00:47:21What do you got?
00:47:22I think I would go for it because you want to put these players in as many stressful positions as
00:47:28you possibly can.
00:47:28High-pressure spots, right?
00:47:30Now, I know that we're looking at, hey, you're leading by one.
00:47:33There's still five minutes left.
00:47:34But in your head as a player, maybe you say, hey, pretend like this is 10 seconds left and it's
00:47:39a fourth down.
00:47:39I've got to go find a way to make a play.
00:47:41First thing I'm thinking, though, is hard count.
00:47:42Let's see if we can get Washington offsides.
00:47:46Emotion.
00:47:47Love it.
00:47:49Altmaier rolling.
00:47:50Altmaier by a time.
00:47:52He's got a first down.
00:47:53It is Meeks out of bounds.
00:47:56And the Lions move the sticks.
00:48:00There you go.
00:48:01Nice job by Altmaier.
00:48:02Using the legs again.
00:48:05Jackson Meeks had probably had a couple options there, but first read wasn't there, second read wasn't there.
00:48:09Okay, what can you do?
00:48:10Use your legs.
00:48:10Use your athleticism.
00:48:11Get out of the pocket.
00:48:12It's fourth down.
00:48:13Can't throw the ball out of bounds.
00:48:15Other team's going to get the ball.
00:48:16Try to find a way to keep your eyes downfield and get some pocket movement and get to the edge.
00:48:22Deliver the first down.
00:48:23Keep this drive going.
00:48:23That's a big time play from Altmaier.
00:48:25Make a play.
00:48:26Make a play.
00:48:26It took 54 minutes for the first fourth down attempt for the Lions.
00:48:31In the second preseason.
00:48:33We have a marker in, which also may set a record.
00:48:37I think it looked like Washington was lined up in the neutral zone.
00:48:43See if I can get another one right.
00:48:47He fits offside.
00:48:49Number 60.
00:48:50Lined up in the neutral zone.
00:48:52Five-yard.
00:48:53Jeffrey Embaugh.
00:48:54The rookie of the SMU.
00:48:57Hey, stick around for the Cure Auto Insurance postgame show.
00:49:01We will hear from some of the principals after the game as the Lions are hoping to pick up their
00:49:08first win of this preseason.
00:49:13And you're going to get a good position to do it right now.
00:49:16First and five.
00:49:17Just knocking on the door of the red zone.
00:49:20I think if I'm Dan Campbell, I'm telling my offensive line, we're going to run the football for probably the
00:49:23next two or three plays.
00:49:25Get these guys some room.
00:49:26Get some movement.
00:49:27Let's see if we can really start to impose, impose our will a little bit.
00:49:32Behind a mix-and-match offensive line here in the fourth quarter.
00:49:37It is a run down to the 17 for Travion Williams.
00:49:44Luke Altmaier at Illinois last year had four game-winning drives in the final minute.
00:49:51That was the most in the nation for a cardiac Illini team.
00:49:56And the Lions are now behind Altmaier in the Heinz red zone.
00:50:02Now that is a great sponsorship, by the way.
00:50:05That is like a perfect marriage.
00:50:07You could catch up guy?
00:50:08Yeah.
00:50:09Red?
00:50:09Yeah.
00:50:10Yeah.
00:50:10Okay.
00:50:11That's interesting.
00:50:11I do like red ketchup.
00:50:13Yes.
00:50:15Well, Heinz makes other condiments, I think.
00:50:18Second down and two.
00:50:19It's a run for Williams.
00:50:21And he will lean forward, try and get back to the line of scrimmage.
00:50:28They do.
00:50:28They do.
00:50:29I just wanted to be clear.
00:50:30The catch-up is phenomenal.
00:50:31Yeah.
00:50:32It's phenomenal.
00:50:33Just trying to get an NIL deal.
00:50:35TJ, you know where this is going.
00:50:39Milk it as long as you can.
00:50:40Get your pets and look at that shiny haircut, by the way.
00:50:44Solid.
00:50:47He got his first coaching job because a friend of a friend, like a family friend, made a
00:50:52phone call for him.
00:50:53And he ended up working at, yeah, at Harvard for his first job.
00:50:57He was at Yale a couple years later, got his way into the NFL, and is just everywhere he's
00:51:03been known as a grinder, a hard worker, as the commanders get a stop here.
00:51:08But you said it.
00:51:09The tight end room with what Trey McBride did in Arizona will be fascinating to watch
00:51:15as this develops.
00:51:16He's got a lot of weapons.
00:51:17Obviously, we spoke on Sam LaPorta.
00:51:20Brock Wright is really starting to come along.
00:51:23Well known for what he does in the run game.
00:51:25But, man, every game he'll kind of surprise you with a couple catches and run after the
00:51:30catch.
00:51:31Right?
00:51:31Tyler Conklin, another guy that they signed who's a very experienced tight end.
00:51:36It gives you multiplicity.
00:51:39You don't have to necessarily be an 11 personnel team or a 12 personnel team.
00:51:44Hey, let's go 13.
00:51:45Let's go put four tight ends on the field sometimes.
00:51:48And if you can have these guys that can line up out wide, line up inside, you can really
00:51:53start to mess with that defense.
00:51:54I'm super excited to see the creativity that Drew Petson can bring to this offense.
00:51:58It is kids' takeover day here at Ford Field.
00:52:02And so, Drew Petson's kids got a chance to take over Ford Field.
00:52:08Oh, that's awesome.
00:52:12That is cutest video of the day.
00:52:15Here you go.
00:52:15By the way.
00:52:16Hit that.
00:52:17Get him.
00:52:18Right in the chat.
00:52:19Down.
00:52:19Yeah.
00:52:20There you go.
00:52:20There you go.
00:52:24That's awesome.
00:52:25That's what it's about.
00:52:26These coaches work so hard, man.
00:52:27You're gone 18, 20 hours a day, especially during training camp.
00:52:30Anytime you get to spend some time with the family, bring the kids out, show them what
00:52:34you do.
00:52:36And it kind of reminds you of why you do all this in the first place.
00:52:40That's so cool to see Drew and his kids out there.
00:52:43And I'm sure a lot of other coaches and players get to spend time with their family today as
00:52:47well.
00:52:47That is the first official sack for Emilia on dad.
00:52:53That's good.
00:52:55Field goal is good for Jake Bates.
00:52:58And the Lions have put up 17 in this game, two in the preseason.
00:53:052.26 to go in this one.
00:53:07The Lions will have to get one more stop to finish the deal as we take a look at our
00:53:11play
00:53:12of the game brought to you by McDonald's.
00:53:15It's the explosiveness of Josh Dobbs.
00:53:17And just the read option.
00:53:18But look at the way that he put the ball in the running back's stomach.
00:53:22Really sold it.
00:53:23Got that defensive end to buy it down.
00:53:25And just took it 50 yards by himself.
00:53:28The speed, the burst, the ball security.
00:53:32Rough start for this offense.
00:53:34We know that first couple series.
00:53:36But to be able to rebound, that's what coaches want to see.
00:53:40How can you respond?
00:53:41How can you respond in times of adversity?
00:53:43That was a big play in this game with how rough the struggle was offensively early.
00:53:50Josh Dobbs comes up with a big play early in that game to tie it back up and get that
00:53:54momentum
00:53:55back on his team sideline.
00:53:57We talked about his intelligence and the externships he's had at NASA and what he's done for that program as
00:54:03well
00:54:03by making it cool, as they have said, to be a scientist and a guy interested in that.
00:54:09He's been called the Pastronaut because of his proclivity for being an astronaut.
00:54:15But did you know, and this is a prize for sticking around, ball is down on the deck.
00:54:21Nobody's got a hand on it.
00:54:23And let's see who's got it.
00:54:25Washington at the bottom of the pile.
00:54:27We will see.
00:54:28There's still a fight for it.
00:54:31Chris Barnes, it looked like, had a chance at it for Washington.
00:54:36At first, they'll unpack the pile.
00:54:40I think it was Jackson Meeks who had the first initial shot on the returner.
00:54:44That popped it loose.
00:54:46Oh, they're going to give it to Washington, but...
00:54:49And that's a great rep by Jackson Meeks attacking that football.
00:54:52That's what Dan Campbell wants to see, not only from his defense, but the special teams as well.
00:54:56They'll punch at that thing.
00:54:58Get it out.
00:54:58What do we got?
00:54:59The Lions have it.
00:55:00Okay.
00:55:02Yeah, it's Meeks gunning down there to make the play, and then all bets are off.
00:55:10Yeah, good luck at the bottom of that pile, Jason.
00:55:13Well, Eric Hunter was the guy who came away with the prize.
00:55:18The rookie out of Morgan State.
00:55:22You've got to do what you've got to do at the bottom of the pile to get that football.
00:55:28There is an initial signal for Washington, T.J., and then the Lions come up with it.
00:55:37Downstairs, Patty on Hunter.
00:55:39He's really been leaning on Trevor Nowoski since coming to the Lions from Morgan State
00:55:44because Nowoski was in a similar situation.
00:55:46He came from a smaller school, Saginaw Valley State, and then broke in to the NFL.
00:55:52And Hunter told me he's been a great role model and a great influence,
00:55:56and he keeps my head up on days where it's not as high.
00:56:00That is a great relationship.
00:56:02Eric Hunter, by the way, was a state title winner in the 400-meter,
00:56:07very athletic guy in high school coming out of the state of Maryland.
00:56:17They're going to try and get the ball back.
00:56:22Patty, what else do you have on Hunter?
00:56:23Well, a fun fact is that he can play five different instruments,
00:56:27the stand-up, bass, piano, and three drumline instruments.
00:56:32And his relationship with music really started with him and his dad.
00:56:36They would rap together.
00:56:37And there's a memory he told me he will never forget,
00:56:40and it's his favorite one.
00:56:41When he was 12 years old, his dad brought him into the recording studio,
00:56:45and he fell in love with making and producing music rather than rapping it.
00:56:50And it also played a part in his nickname that he got in college.
00:56:53He wore the number 40.
00:56:54His name is obviously Eric.
00:56:56And there's a rapper named D-40,
00:56:58so that's what everyone called him around campus.
00:57:01That is awesome.
00:57:02Good stuff.
00:57:03The stand-up bass is a cool instrument, by the way.
00:57:06That was huge.
00:57:08It's huge.
00:57:10There you go.
00:57:11Straight ahead, it is Blackshear,
00:57:13and he is a yard short of the line to gain
00:57:15as we move down to the two-minute warning.
00:57:18You set off the top of the show.
00:57:21Turnovers would be important.
00:57:22The Lions get one late.
00:57:24Trying to put away a win behind Eric Hunter.
00:57:27Yards to get on third down.
00:57:29The Lions are driving into the Heinz red zone.
00:57:33And a chance here to put this away.
00:57:35Washington down to two timeouts.
00:57:37If you get a first down, it's pretty much all but over.
00:57:41And just got to communicate up front.
00:57:43No free runners.
00:57:44I'm handing this ball off.
00:57:46If I'm Luke Altmaier, try to push that pile
00:57:48to see if you can get across that first down line.
00:57:52Blackshear the tailback.
00:57:53He'll run left.
00:57:54He gets strung out.
00:57:55And is dropped right at the line of scrimmage.
00:58:00Darius Rush was in on the stop.
00:58:03And it is fourth down.
00:58:05The commanders will use their second timeout.
00:58:08Yes, it's a bit too much penetration there
00:58:11in the interior of that offensive line.
00:58:13I don't think that play was designed.
00:58:15Campbell's not happy with somebody.
00:58:17I don't know who he was going at,
00:58:19but that play was not designed to bounce.
00:58:22I think Blackshear just had really no choice
00:58:25to bounce that just with the penetration
00:58:28that you have in the inside.
00:58:29But fourth down here,
00:58:32I think, yeah, I'm trying to draw him off sides.
00:58:33See if you can pick up that free first down.
00:58:36If not, hey, go make a play.
00:58:40Luke Altmaier, the rookie quarterback,
00:58:42the 23-year-old out of Illinois will hand it off.
00:58:46A little hesitation and a first down.
00:58:48Blackshear got there.
00:58:50Enough drive from the offensive line to move the sticks.
00:58:53And with just one timeout left,
00:58:56Washington will just have to wear it.
00:58:59First down, Lions.
00:59:00That's going to do it.
00:59:02And Dan Quinn took the headset off.
00:59:05Not going to waste his last timeout.
00:59:08Coach Campbell, I think both coaches
00:59:12understand their headsets.
00:59:13Picked up the, if you're Washington,
00:59:15hey, you'd love to get the ball back,
00:59:16obviously, for some valuable two-minute reps.
00:59:18But this is one where, hey, good job, boys.
00:59:21Picking up the first down.
00:59:22Take a knee.
00:59:22Sit on it.
00:59:23Go get some water.
00:59:24Go debrief.
00:59:26It's a good win.
00:59:27It is a good win.
00:59:29That was mutually agreed upon headset removal
00:59:32by the two coaches.
00:59:33They looked at each other,
00:59:34and then that was it when Dan Quinn
00:59:36decided not to use the timeout.
00:59:38Hey, the Lions defense today,
00:59:40that was the story, was really good, TJ.
00:59:43Agree.
00:59:43And especially with how the offense
00:59:45started the game, right?
00:59:46Fumble, touchdown, you go down 7-0,
00:59:49then you get the ball back, interception.
00:59:51Oh, man, you feel like you're really
00:59:52throwing your defense in a hard situation.
00:59:53But those guys stepped up,
00:59:55not only against the run,
00:59:56but a lot of good pass rushes today as well.
00:59:58A lot of valuable tape that these coaches
01:00:00and these players are going to take
01:00:01out of this game today.
01:00:02The Lions allowed just nine total first downs
01:00:05and then six points on defense.
01:00:08Josh Dobbs, a couple of touchdown drives.
01:00:12Luke Altmaier, 9 for 13
01:00:14and 169-plus on the ground for the Lions
01:00:19after overcoming the early two turnovers.
01:00:2317-13, Cali Akmanis and Altmaier,
01:00:27a couple of Big Ten guys formerly chatted up.
01:00:30And Josh Dobbs with the explosive play of the day,
01:00:34a 50-yard touchdown run for a 17-13 final score
01:00:38for the Lions.
01:00:39Game number two in the books
01:00:40before heading to Indianapolis next Saturday
01:00:43at 1 o'clock Eastern time
01:00:45for the preseason finale.
01:00:4817-13, your final score.
01:00:50The Lions are winners here at home
01:00:53in the only home preseason game.
01:00:55They did it for the kids, TJ.
01:00:57They did it.
01:00:57And the kids can go home happy.
01:01:00But there's so many young guys.
01:01:01Talk about kids.
01:01:02Some of the young guys on this team.
01:01:04How many times did we mention Skyler Gilhoward,
01:01:06Eric O'Neal, Jackson Meeks,
01:01:08who was a converted wide receiver,
01:01:10moving over to tight end.
01:01:11Not only making a couple good catches
01:01:12out of the backfield,
01:01:13throwing some blocks
01:01:14and then late in that game
01:01:15getting that punch out
01:01:16on that kickoff return.
01:01:17Really difference in this team.
01:01:19In this game.
01:01:20So it's impressive to watch
01:01:21some of these young guys play.
01:01:25Downstairs, Henry Ford Health
01:01:28sideline report with Patty
01:01:29and people who are hugging.
01:01:31Patty.
01:01:32Derek, first preseason game.
01:01:34How did it feel to get out there?
01:01:36It felt good just to be back out here
01:01:37playing in front of forward field,
01:01:39in front of the fans.
01:01:41Just felt great.
01:01:42I just got to clean up
01:01:43a little bit of things
01:01:43on the field,
01:01:44but it just felt good
01:01:45being back out here.
01:01:47Can you describe
01:01:48the adrenaline rush
01:01:49of playing at forward field?
01:01:51Man, it's amazing.
01:01:52I played at the big house.
01:01:54I think this is probably
01:01:54more than the big house.
01:01:56I love the energy
01:01:57and I'm just ready
01:01:59to be here for the season.
01:02:01Speaking of the big house
01:02:02and the University of Michigan,
01:02:04you have a chance
01:02:05to play opposite of Hutch.
01:02:07What does something
01:02:08like that mean to you?
01:02:09It feels awesome.
01:02:10I can't wait for it.
01:02:12Hutch was a guy
01:02:13that I always looked up to
01:02:14while I was in college.
01:02:15So now I'm just being able
01:02:16to be on the same field
01:02:17with him.
01:02:18Guys like DJ, PT,
01:02:19even Ahmed,
01:02:20the rest of the D-line.
01:02:22I'm just ready for it.
01:02:23I'm just ready to go out there
01:02:24and dominate
01:02:25and just make my name known.
01:02:26Appreciate it, Derek.
01:02:27Thank you.
01:02:28That is a fierce pass rusher.
01:02:31He got himself a sack today
01:02:33and the Lions are winners.
01:02:34Stick around.
01:02:35The Curato postgame show
01:02:37brought to you by
01:02:38Curato Insurance.
01:02:40Follows this timeout 17-13.
01:02:42Your final score.
01:02:43The Lions are winners.
01:02:44Thank you.
01:02:44And I'm excited.
01:02:45what you saw.
