00:00Hey Mitch of Finley, 106.7 The Fam, we're fired up to jump on the Rude Guest Hotline
00:04and welcome in our friend, Ike Reese from WIP in Philadelphia, B's former team.
00:10What's up, Ike? How you doing, man?
00:13JP, B. Mitch, what's up, fellas?
00:15What's up, brother?
00:16It's Friday. I'm doing good, big bro. What's going on?
00:19Chilling, man. What's going on up there in Eagle Land, man?
00:23The receivers getting healthy?
00:26Well, yeah, slowly but surely.
00:30Yeah, slowly but surely.
00:32I still don't know if Devontae practiced fully yet.
00:36He certainly is not going to play tomorrow, but he's been trending in the right direction.
00:40I'd be surprised if he's not ready to be back on the field for a goal next week.
00:46But the young fella, Makai, now, I thought I saw him doing individuals yesterday.
00:52I think I saw him doing some videos, some individuals,
00:54so I guess he's heading in the right direction as well.
00:58We need to see him out on the field.
01:00No questions about Smitty, but obviously, when you're a rookie-wide receiver,
01:04the more time you miss, the longer it's going to take you to get acclimated to this level of play.
01:11Offensive scheme-wise, what the defense is trying to do to you,
01:13so the quicker they can get Makai back out there, that'll be great.
01:18And I think that's really where you've got to sort of start.
01:20It's hard to really evaluate the overall position when your top receiver has been banged up for two weeks
01:28dealing with a hamstring, and then the first-round rookie you drafted,
01:31who you expect to contribute, has not been on the field at all.
01:35I mean, really, through the spring or anything, he's been dealing with a hamstring issue seemingly
01:39since they drafted him.
01:41But the other guy, I'll tell you, Tay Wicks has certainly flashed at times.
01:47He has certainly looked good at times, but then there's also been times where, you know,
01:52the things that ailed him out in Green Bay, which is inconsistency, drops at times.
01:58They show up as well.
01:59But I feel good about the passing game.
02:02I guess, fellas, it all depends on your expectation of the passing game
02:07and what they expect to do.
02:09In my opinion, this is going to be a run.
02:11This should be a run-first offense.
02:13Lean on that offensive line.
02:15Lean on Saquon Barkley.
02:17You've got to take care of Wicks, man.
02:18It's a Louisiana boy now.
02:20Oh, okay.
02:22He's got a little Plaquemine roots, man.
02:24Oh, does he?
02:24Yeah.
02:25Okay.
02:26Talk him with our friend.
02:27But can't he cook that crawfish like you?
02:29I don't know, man.
02:30I don't know if he can do all that, but he's got a little Plaquemine in him.
02:36Where did he go to college?
02:38Was he a Rage of Cajun, too?
02:40No, no.
02:40He didn't go to Rage of Cajun.
02:41Okay.
02:42No.
02:43He was one of the kids who got shot at UVA.
02:46Oh, my gosh.
02:47That's right.
02:47Oh, my goodness.
02:49Yeah.
02:49Wow.
02:50Talking with Ike Reese here.
02:52You can listen to him on the afternoons, WIP in Philadelphia.
02:56Ike played with B on the Eagles.
02:59Ike, I am curious, man.
03:00I played with Ike.
03:01He was there when I got there.
03:02Fair.
03:03Fair.
03:03He's a little older than me.
03:04He got to play with Ike.
03:09I was going to let that one go now.
03:12First of all, when you're playing with a, and let me say this clearly, should be Hall
03:18of Famer in Brian Mitchell, he certainly was not playing with me.
03:22I was honored and privileged to be able to block for Brian Mitchell.
03:26Are you kidding me?
03:27Yeah.
03:27You did some blocking.
03:28You talking about a guy?
03:30You definitely did that.
03:31We got it done.
03:32We got that done, brother.
03:33Yes, sir.
03:34Hey, listen.
03:35And I can't wait till you get in Canton, bro, because I'll be there.
03:37That's going to be a hell of a party, Ike.
03:39It's going to be a hell of a party.
03:41Bone crushes for everybody.
03:43Yes, sir.
03:45Bone crushes.
03:46Wow.
03:47Ike, the biggest question.
03:49I just had a flashback.
03:52What was the night you and Deuce ran the club?
03:54Monday nights?
03:55That was Monday nights.
03:56Oh, my goodness.
03:59Okay, let's get back to football, Jacob.
04:01Let's get back to football.
04:02Let's get back to football.
04:04Let's get back to football.
04:05By far, now, like, I pay attention to Eagles media, and by far, the biggest question marks
04:12through training camp seem to be about Jalen Hurts' passing.
04:15Is that overblown, or are there concerns there?
04:20Because, I mean, I saw a stat line.
04:21Granted, it's a practice, but I know he did not perform well against the Patriots and was
04:26throwing a bunch of picks.
04:27Yeah, I'll say this.
04:30It is certainly something that's on the radar, and I'll say for me personally, I'm not overly
04:35concerned about it, but I know it is a topic and it's something, a focal point that we here
04:44in Philadelphia have certainly honed in on.
04:48Let's be honest, the passing game, the last two years have not been up to par.
04:53It's almost declined.
04:54Each year has regressed.
04:56I'm not saying that's solely because of Jalen.
04:59I'm just saying the passing game in general.
05:01So, when they brought in Sean Mannion and this new offense that's being implemented, there
05:08are expectations for the offense, right?
05:10And we as fans, media-like, and I'm pretty sure the Eagles as well, that's why you bring
05:16in a guy like Sean Mannion, they want to see improvement in the passing game.
05:21My only thing is, I just don't think this offense will or should ever be a throw-it-around-the
05:28-yard
05:29type of an offense.
05:3040 attempts?
05:31No.
05:31If you're looking at 30 attempts, maybe 35, if you're pushed to that, I'm perfectly fine
05:37with that.
05:38I think that's where Jalen's going to be at his best.
05:40So, it's not where they want it to be right now, and it certainly has hit a few bumps
05:45here and there, but my expectation is that this offense is going to get better as the
05:50year goes.
05:52He's dealing with his, what, seventh, I think, or eighth offensive coordinator since he's
05:58been in the league.
05:59And it's going to take some time.
06:00He has a lot of new weapons, and he's on excuses.
06:04These, to me, are just would be explanations as if the offense doesn't sort of hit the ground
06:10running the first four to five weeks of the season from the passing game standpoint.
06:15I think it'll be better as the year goes on.
06:17But to your ultimate question and point, yes, the passing game has been a focal point for
06:24a lot of us around here as far as evaluating.
06:27I think it's a little unfair.
06:31I think there's also been enough positive reports that Jalen has been doing some good
06:36things as well, like playing on the center, throwing the ball over the middle of the field,
06:41the play-action passes, things that we hadn't seen a lot of him do in the past.
06:46He has been doing those things in training camp.
06:49So, I think once you get Smitty back on the field, he's his number one wide receiver.
06:53That's a security blanket.
06:55I think everything else falls into place after that.
06:58But this is going to be a run-first offense that lives off the play-action pass and taking
07:05shots when they need to.
07:06And Saquon, is he ready to get back to what he was two years ago because he was outstanding?
07:13That's a high bar to get back to, B, and I'm sure, listen, you know that better than anybody.
07:18But once you jump backwards over somebody, people expect it all the time, man.
07:22No, I totally agree.
07:23Listen, he set the bar.
07:25Now, listen, he set the bar.
07:26And last year, it was not – it didn't meet that standard.
07:31And, again, I'll start with those big guys up front.
07:34You know this.
07:34A running back can only be as good as his offensive line is.
07:37And the reason why Saquon was so good two years ago is that I don't believe – I think
07:44there was a stat out there.
07:45He didn't get touch until he was like three yards past the line of scrimmage a majority
07:51of the time two years ago.
07:52That's how great that offensive line was playing.
07:55Whereas last year, man, he might have been the worst running back in the league as far
07:59as when contact is made.
08:01So, he was either getting hit at the line of scrimmage or back in the backfield before
08:06he could get going.
08:07And, to me, that has more to do with the O-line than it does the actual running back.
08:12So, I think if the O-line get back to playing to the level and standards that they've been
08:17playing at for years, I think Saquon is going to be fine.
08:21And I'll tell you, Tank Bigsby has been a great complimentary back to Saquon.
08:25So, I like that one-two punch there.
08:27I like that, too.
08:28That's a – I like Bigsby.
08:30I think he's been a pretty good player over the years.
08:33Yeah.
08:33I wanted to circle back to Hurts because I'm just curious, especially with you hosting
08:37an iconic sports radio station in WIP in Philadelphia.
08:40You guys have callers sunup to sundown, right?
08:44Yeah.
08:45Hurts, it's remarkable kind of the discourse around Jalen Hurts because all that guy has
08:52done is win.
08:5457-25 in six years as a starter, a Super Bowl ring, a narrow Super Bowl loss.
08:59I think he's probably played his two best games ever in the Super Bowl, which is pretty
09:03remarkable, kind of matching the moment.
09:05Career 65% passer, 110 touchdowns to 45 picks.
09:10And yet, he seems like a lightning rod.
09:14Obviously, whatever was him and A.J. Brown was him and A.J. Brown.
09:17I don't know, but I saw the Eagles social media team posted a video of him throwing an interception
09:23and people went crazy about that.
09:26What are callers like about Hurts?
09:28What is the fan base?
09:30How would you like to have it as a show topic for a whole day?
09:33Oh, my gosh.
09:33That's the easiest show you ever did.
09:34I guarantee you, if the PR team put out a picture of me throwing an interception, they
09:40couldn't talk to me no more.
09:42Hey, can I get a little quote from you?
09:44Get the hell out of my face.
09:45Well, we had a couple easy shows with the Jaden LSU stuff.
09:47I'll tell you that.
09:48But it was not the social media team putting out a video of the quarterback throwing an
09:55interception.
09:56No, I totally agree.
09:57I totally agree with you.
09:59And I think that's the polarizing effect that Jalen has, not only in Philadelphia.
10:05I know we are rabid here in Philadelphia when it comes to the Philadelphia Eagles.
10:10We react to just about everything.
10:12But even nationally, if you look at the ESPNs and the national shows and the talking heads,
10:19they don't know which side of the fence to be on when it comes to Jalen Hurts, whether
10:24should he be at the resume of an elite quarterback and a guy that should be considered top 10
10:30at worst in the league.
10:32But he never makes it in those rankings when these executives put out these anonymous rankings
10:37before the season.
10:39He's somewhere at 15, 17, somewhere around there.
10:42And it's like, do you give him credit for the winning or is he winning because he's surrounded
10:47by so much talent?
10:49And here's what I find ironic about that statement, because I think that's a lot of what Jalen is
10:56sort of put in that box.
10:59Are they winning because of him or is he the winner that he is because of the amount of
11:04talent they put around him?
11:05Well, no one ever says that about Matthew Stafford.
11:08Right.
11:09And Matthew Stafford was no one overall pick was in Detroit with arguably a top five wide
11:13receiver all time and Calvin Johnson and they couldn't do anything.
11:16He gets traded to the Rams with Sean McVay.
11:19You got Pook in the cool.
11:21You got Cooper Cup.
11:22You got Devontae Adams.
11:24You got all types of guys, Aaron Donald, Miles Gary, nobody ever says anything about
11:28Matthew Stafford winning with the talent that he has around him.
11:32I say that to say, I'm good with winning with Jalen and I don't care how it looks.
11:39He's the best quarterback.
11:40The Eagles have had in this era of Eagles football.
11:44He's on a Hall of Fame trajectory as a quarterback, but yet still he has to prove himself every
11:50year.
11:50And I think for those people who don't necessarily, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
11:55So if you don't see beauty when you watch Jalen Hurts play, I don't know what to tell you.
12:00I don't know what he's going to have to do and show you for you to see that.
12:03I see the beauty in the winning and I'm good with that.
12:07If I'm an Eagles fan, as a former Eagle, I'm good with that.
12:11The guy seemingly when the big games are there, he shows up in them.
12:15He's a face of the franchise.
12:17He doesn't do anything to embarrass your franchise, embarrass you as a fan.
12:23I don't know what else you can ask from the guy.
12:26But that's just me.
12:27That's just me.
12:28I know there are things he can do better.
12:30He's not perfect.
12:31And I get it.
12:32There are some guys that look prettier throwing the football and put up more yards and that
12:36sort of thing.
12:37And I get that.
12:38We're always enamored with what we don't have.
12:40But the grass ain't always greener.
12:42And I like the color of this grass with Jalen Hurts as the franchise quarterback.
12:47A lot of guys pass over 4,000 yards and losing.
12:51Yeah, exactly.
12:53See, listen, and J.P. know how I am.
12:56I am sick and tired of all this number stuff.
13:00What really matters is wins and losses.
13:03You know what I mean?
13:03Yeah, everybody wants to throw the numbers out there when it looks good for someone.
13:08But the number that counts is how many wins you got, how many losses you got.
13:13Yes, sir.
13:14Yeah.
13:14Hey, Ike, you can tell your listeners this afternoon on WIP, if you want to give Ike a
13:19follow, it's at Ike58Reese.
13:22You can let them know that I think Washington's going to come up there and sneak one week one.
13:26I think the commander's going to hit the ground.
13:28Tell him J.P.
13:29Finley said it.
13:29I think Philly's still trying to figure out this offense.
13:33I thought you were going to wait until the week of the game to do this, but you want
13:37to go early with it.
13:38I'm calling my shot now.
13:39I think they win on the road in Philly week one.
13:43He just, you know what he's doing?
13:48He didn't try to shoot the harness nest from 25 feet.
13:51He kicked it.
13:54So let me ask you this, B.
13:55Let me ask you this.
13:57Is this some sort of a way to get me to accept a challenge?
14:02No, no, no, no.
14:05He's been doing that lately.
14:06He looked in the camera and just said the Wiz is going to start 2-0.
14:09The Wizards are going to start 2-0.
14:12No challenge or anything.
14:14I want the people in Philadelphia to know I think Washington goes up there and sneaks one
14:18early.
14:19Because to your earlier point, I have watched this Eagles team throughout kind of this current
14:25era of dominance get way better and stronger as the year goes on.
14:30But I think installing a new offense, not having A.J.
14:33Brown, who has absolutely killed Washington over the years, and that receiving core, not
14:39really getting much time on task together with the quarterback.
14:43I don't know.
14:43I like the spot.
14:46Okay.
14:47So I'm going to leave you guys with this.
14:50Don't be the little dog outside of the fence barking.
14:55We're on the porch.
14:57You want to get on the porch.
14:59You're the little dog outside the fence barking, trying to get our attention.
15:05I'm not ready to show your attention just yet, J.P.
15:07That's fair.
15:08That's fair.
15:09I like Washington.
15:10It's a cute team.
15:11It's a cute team.
15:12Cute.
15:13But this is big boy.
15:14Cute is so convenient.
15:16Now you're getting rude right now.
15:19You're calling team cute.
15:20The Eagles are 7-3 in the last 10 against this game.
15:23So Ike has a point.
15:26Sir, I look forward to seeing it.
15:277-4.
15:28I want to see if I can poke B. Mitch.
15:29I want to see if I can poke B. Mitch and see if he was going to respond.
15:35Next time we talk to you, I'm going to find out exactly how do people feel about LeBron
15:40staying in New York.
15:41We'll get that later.
15:43I am curious about that.
15:45Thank you for the time, man.
15:47All right, guys.
15:48All right, brother.
15:48Take care, man.
15:49Appreciate it, fellas.
