Why is Mario called Mario? 🎮

Before becoming one of the most recognizable characters in video game history, Mario had a very different name. He was originally known as Jumpman when he first appeared in Donkey Kong in 1981.

The name “Mario” is widely credited to Mario Segale, a businessman and the landlord of Nintendo of America’s warehouse in Tukwila, Washington. According to the well-known story, Nintendo of America employees were reminded of Segale when they were dealing with the character’s name, and “Mario” eventually became the name we know today.
