Ja'Marr Chase on Bengals' Joint Practice with Bears, Scuffle Involving Joe Burrow and More
Transcript
00:00Instant thoughts to today's practice.
00:05It was pretty good on both sides of the ball, offense and defense.
00:08Made some good plays on the defensive side for us.
00:10Offense had good opportunities to make good plays on the skill side.
00:15Had good runs on the run side.
00:17O-line did a good job overall.
00:18I think overall we had an overall good game.
00:22Probably be better if we actually had chances to really put the score up
00:25and settle it that way.
00:26So how beneficial are joint practices like this
00:30where you get to go up against a former playoff team?
00:32I want to say this is what, my second one?
00:35Six years at least, this is my second one.
00:37It might be third.
00:38No, it's my second one.
00:38I didn't do the third one against Chicago my third year.
00:42So this is my second one.
00:43Honestly, I'm not 100% sure yet.
00:45You know what I'm saying?
00:46I like the work because it's not something that we always see.
00:49It's something different.
00:51We're going against the different guys who are game-playing against us
00:54for actual game reps.
00:55So I think those are helpful for us to see what we can do against those opportunities
00:59for the younger guys to step up and make plays
01:01and for me and T to make plays with contested catches
01:05and against different coverages we don't normally see.
01:07This could be one of the final times that you guys go up in an intense competition
01:12before opening day.
01:13If you guys don't play, Jack said you're not playing Saturday,
01:16you're not going to play in the final game.
01:18How do you feel about that?
01:20I mean, it's fine.
01:21I'm cool with that.
01:22But at the end of the day, everybody got to know their own switch.
01:25And that's how it works.
01:26If you're a pro, you got to know your own switch and know your off switch.
01:28And that's what it's going to come down to when the first game starts.
01:30Joe, at this point, can you give an evaluation of how you think the offense has played?
01:34I mean, you guys are what, like three weeks in?
01:36And just your general thoughts on what you think you guys are doing well,
01:39what you're hoping to improve on?
01:48Good question, good question, good question.
01:50All right, pretty much overall, I think the up front has been our biggest thing
01:54we've been focusing on this whole time, getting the guys up front to challenge them guys
01:59and challenge the receivers on perimeter blocking, I would say.
02:02Blocking in general for the up front, blocking for the receivers in general, too.
02:08And for the receivers, I'd just say making the contested catches and the big plays
02:11is just what we've been focusing on.
02:13Do you think you guys are ready?
02:14I think this is it.
02:15The next time we see is September 13th.
02:19No, we're not ready yet because we haven't prepped for the team we're playing for.
02:23So, I mean, when we're prepped for them, then we'll be ready.
02:26But that's not a prep for them.
02:27This is a prep for another team.
02:29How about at the stage?
02:30How about at this stage of the season?
02:32I mean, we're ready.
02:34Everybody's ready to play now, but it comes down to preparation.
02:37And the preparation is going to help us win games.
02:39Jamar, you probably already answered this.
02:40What would it feel like to see that defense close out of everything last year over additions,
02:44to see a defense close like that in that kind of situation?
02:47Love to see it.
02:48Love to see it.
02:49Love the opportunities.
02:51Can't be mad about that, man.
02:53And we expect those guys to go out there and make a stop.
02:56That's the reason why we got a lot of different guys on defense now to make those plays for us.
03:03I honestly didn't see nothing.
03:05I just seen Dex excited after the play.
03:07I didn't really see what happened.
03:08You and Jalen Johnson were matched up against each other for a lot of practice.
03:11What do you make of him?
03:13Good corner.
03:14Real good corner.
03:17Pretty aggressive on a couple plays.
03:19Is it too aggressive?
03:21Just an aggressive corner.
03:23Not too aggressive.
03:24I get jumped every day.
03:25I get jumped for a living.
03:26I got many yards with getting jumped out of the line.
03:28I mean, that's not aggressive.
03:30When T's cooking like he was, it felt like he was just catching everything and getting open.
03:35What's that like on the other side?
03:37Honestly, man, that's what I want.
03:39You know what I'm saying?
03:40They played a little bit of man.
03:41They was playing like a little bit of coverage, two to my side, a little bit of bracket maybe here
03:45and there.
03:46But T had a lot of opportunity for the one-on-ones, and Joe took advantage of it, and T
03:50made the most of them.
03:51So that's what we want.
03:52Has there been a different feel to this camp, Jamar, for you and for the offense in general?
03:58Yeah, I'd say the biggest feel for the whole team in general is just the camaraderie with the defense.
04:04I think that's the biggest thing for us is going back and forth with the defense.
04:07They're knowing our assignments.
04:09We're knowing their assignments and just making each other better.
04:12How much have you noticed Jonathan Allen?
04:14There's been a lot made of decks there, but just Jonathan Allen being added to this.
04:18Oh, I forgot what that was.
04:20Yeah, man, he's a good vet, if I'm going to be honest.
04:22I remember last time he talked in front of the whole team and told us a little bit in the
04:26team meeting room
04:27and told us how some of the O-line guys went slow, and that's good.
04:31And I can relate that to certain DBs and stuff like that.
04:33So he's an overall good vet that we have on the team.
04:36I mean, he's well-rounded, man.
04:39He's an overall good guy.
04:41Dante and Colby have kind of made a name for themselves this camp.
04:44What has kind of jumped off the page from your vantage point?
04:48Just two young guys making an impact on the team, man.
04:50They know they've got to come in and make a play to get some opportunities to play on the field,
04:54and they're making the most of their opportunities.
04:56All the guys coming back from last year's defense, in your opinion, who do you think is the most improved?
05:02Most improved?
05:03All the guys coming back.
05:04I'd probably say DJ just overall-wise that I've seen.
05:11I'd probably say DJ and a linebacker.
05:18A lot of two rookie linebackers.
05:20They've been playing really, really fast and physically lately, and I've been noticing it.
05:24So those two guys, yeah.
05:25Did you know DJ had this in him when he was a rookie?
05:28I mean, he's been going up against you in camp for multiple years now.
05:30Did you know he had this kind of potential?
05:33I mean, it was just for him to find, but I mean, obviously we all knew what he was like.
05:36That's why we drafted him.
05:37And it was just a moment of time for him to find his true colors and play along with himself.
05:41What have you seen from Jordan Battle, Jamar?
05:45JB's been improving, too.
05:46I mean, I can't forget about Jordan Battle.
05:47Jordan Battle's been improving.
05:49I talked to Jordan a lot about just his techniques and holding it and disguising it and stuff like that
05:54because he's one of the guys that I got to look at.
05:57And, you know, I talked to him, chip him a little bit, giving him pointers every here and there.
06:00But overall, he's been doing a good job.
06:02Obviously, the linebackers, the starting linebackers have been discussed a ton all offseason.
06:06You just praised them.
06:07Can you elaborate a little bit more on what you've seen from both Barrett and Demetrius?
06:11I mean, they've just been playing, like, a little faster.
06:14Like, you can tell they know what they're doing more.
06:17And then last year, obviously, there were rookies coming in trying to learn and pick it up.
06:21And then they were captains of the defense, giving out the plays.
06:24So now they're more vocally leading.
06:27They're more confident, calling the play.
06:29They're more confident running around, making plays, their adjustments.
06:32And you can see it, man.
06:33They're having fun out there, screaming, and that's what you want from linebackers.
06:36What is it like for y'all to finish like that against a team that was in the playoffs, a
06:39place that you all want to get back to?
06:45Um, it's a new year at the end of the day.
06:46It's a new year.
06:47That's why we're going against those guys in this town right now.
06:50See where we at, see where they at, and move forward from there.
06:53What do you feel like going on?
06:54I ain't saying.
06:56You sounded frustrated after that last rep.
06:58How open were you?
06:59No comment.
07:00No comment.
07:02What's the biggest thing you take out of a day like today?
07:05Going up against another team in a practice, hot.
07:08Just had a little scuffle a couple of times over there.
07:11What's the biggest thing when you go back and you look at the film from this practice that you take
07:14away from it?
07:18I'd say the biggest thing is just learning from your mistakes, especially as a pro.
07:22That's the biggest thing is learn how to hold yourself accountable, correct yourself before your coach could correct yourself.
07:27What did you see on that second?
07:30Well, there might have been more than two scuffles, but the scuffle where Joe was sort of involved.
07:36Did you know?
07:37Nothing.
07:39Nothing just defending my QB.
07:42Is it good when everybody's rallying around him in that type of situation?
07:45I don't care what we do.
07:46We just better protect Joe.
07:47I don't care what we do.
