Joe Burrow on Bengals' Win Over Cardinals, Ja'Marr Chase, the Defense and More
Transcript
00:00What did you think of Cody with the ball in his hands?
00:02I couldn't believe what I was watching, but it was sick.
00:07Have you ever seen him play basketball or anything?
00:10Nope, have not.
00:12What did you think of the offense at home today?
00:15I thought we were pretty productive, pretty efficient.
00:18I thought Chase Brown was great.
00:22He's been great all year.
00:24We made plays when we had to, but stayed on schedule, converted third downs.
00:30I thought it was a efficient performance.
00:32Cody just told us he was a tight end in middle school and freshman year.
00:35Do you see the roots of that on that?
00:37I do, I do, I do.
00:39Long time ago, many moons ago, but I do.
00:43With Chase Brown, he was phenomenal to close last season,
00:47but how have you even seen him take the next step this year?
00:49He just keeps getting better.
00:50Last year he hit a level that once you hit that level,
00:55then you're just continuous improvement in all areas of your game.
00:59He didn't have any weaknesses last year,
01:02and he just stepped up a notch this year.
01:05It's been fun to watch.
01:06On top pick up, Chase.
01:07The third and 20, you've been sacked twice,
01:10and when you gave it to him on the third and 20,
01:13are you thinking, hey, take it and get it?
01:15It's close to three goal range.
01:16Kim, what was going for you?
01:18Yeah, we just called a screen there.
01:21Just trying to get it out of our hands,
01:23and he made a play, got us in the field goal range,
01:25got us points.
01:25That was a big play in the game.
01:27Over the last two weeks in the third quarter,
01:29Chase Brown has a combined five touchdowns.
01:31Is there any rhyme or reason to that, you think?
01:33No.
01:34That's just how it plays out.
01:36Joe, there's always a lot of talk of meaningless football.
01:38What meaning does this kind of game have
01:40when you have this kind of performance,
01:41and do what y'all did today?
01:44Yeah, that's, you know, every time we go out there,
01:47we're putting our bodies on the line
01:49and going out and trying to prove ourselves
01:52in front of the world.
01:54Playoffs are out of the question, obviously,
01:57but anytime you step foot out there,
02:00you're playing for pride, playing for your guys
02:02and trying to execute and trying to put good stuff on tape.
02:05Is there a part of y'all that wants to send a message that,
02:07hey, we might be out of it this year,
02:08but next year we feel like we can do something?
02:10Is that?
02:11I mean, every year is so new.
02:13New players, new teams, new schemes.
02:18We're just trying to go out and play well right now.
02:20I know you're not watching every snap of the defense.
02:23You're looking at all of those things,
02:25but for them to perform the way they did
02:27against a good offense today, what does that mean?
02:29Yeah, we tackled well.
02:30We stopped the run.
02:32And when you do those two things,
02:34then you get to third down.
02:36And anything can happen on third down.
02:38So the key is stopping the run.
02:41And we've done that for several weeks in a row now.
02:44It's been fun to watch.
02:45How have you seen Miles develop, change, have you in practice?
02:49Obviously, he's been far more productive over the past few months.
02:52Yeah, he's always been a good practice player.
02:55Practice is hard.
02:56Just impacting the game.
02:58And like I said earlier this week,
02:59I don't know anything about his specific gap responsibilities
03:03or on any specific plays.
03:06I just see him around the football, around the quarterback,
03:08making plays, hitting people, impacting the game in a lot of different ways.
03:12It's been fun to watch.
03:13When you throw the ball to Jamar, bubble screen, like the touchdown,
03:16you know, the ball's out of your hands.
03:17How fun is that to watch what he does next?
03:18Yeah, that's just icing on the cake for me.
03:23My job is to get playmakers the ability to make plays,
03:29get the ball in their hand.
03:31And you can't – you spend a lot of time throughout the week.
03:34Coaches do trying to find ways to get our guys the ball in space.
03:40You can scheme it up a lot of different ways.
03:41The easiest one there is try to figure out a way to put Jamar one-on-one
03:45with a corner.
03:46And that was a good, well-designed play.
03:49And obviously, you know, Jamar's great.
03:50When did you think on that play during it, oh, he's scoring?
03:55As soon as he made the first guy miss, I knew he was going to score.
03:58What's that dynamic?
03:59Like, obviously, you and Jamar have been talking about so much.
04:01You're so close from college, et cetera.
04:02But when he's going through a touchdown drought
04:04and he has all his belief in you and you have all the belief in him,
04:06what's that like on the week leading up to games?
04:09I didn't even realize he was in a touchdown drought.
04:14You know, he's the same guy every day for the most part.
04:18Mornings, sometimes he's a little tired.
04:21But once we get out to practice, he's the same guy every day
04:23and just goes about his business and goes and produces on Sundays
04:29and plays great and figures out a way to get open
04:34against very, very unique technique from defenses.
04:39He's seen it all now, so he knows what he's doing
04:41and all those different looks.
04:43And, you know, everybody's game plan is focused around him
04:48and not letting him beat him,
04:49and he continuously just produces at a high level.
04:51So that's not an easy thing to do,
04:54and I don't see any other receivers in the league
04:57that get the attention that he does.
04:58Joe, going off a question that Ben asked,
05:01we're talking about new schemes, new players at the start of each season.
05:05I'm wondering if there's anything about this kind of late season momentum
05:10that can carry over into the next season.
05:14It sounds like you think a lot of things start from zero,
05:18but is anything transferable?
05:19I just think individual growth is transferable.
05:24When you have young guys starting to impact the game at a high level for the first time,
05:30you have to carry that through the offseason.
05:32Because it's not just, just because you do it one year doesn't mean it's going to happen the next year.
05:39The guys that can build off of individual performances and growth from the year before
05:45are the ones that end up being great players,
05:48the ones that know how to change their body,
05:51change their techniques to improve from the year before.
05:54That's what you're looking for.
05:55How much did you miss this feeling while you were out in the season?
05:58Yeah, this is why you do it.
06:00The highs and the lows, the emotion.
06:06Performing with your guys, that's what you love about it.
06:09Is there a part of this that's painful, knowing the level that you're playing now?
06:14As a team, defense, offense, everything's come together,
06:17and there could have been a shot, but there isn't a shot at that time.
06:21We are where we're at.
06:23There's nothing we can do about it now,
06:25except put one foot in front of the other and try to get better,
06:28go and perform again next week.
06:30There have been times for your career where you've probably had an offensive lineman coming up to you,
06:34asking for the ball.
06:35I don't know how many passes you've thrown an offensive lineman in your time here in Cincinnati,
06:39but what did it feel like to finally get one of those guys the ball?
06:43Yeah, we tried one of Mims last year, had to throw it away.
06:46I think this is probably the first one that I've thrown.
06:52We've had play designs for it in the past, but any time you can get the ball in those guys' hands,
06:57they just light up like a kid on Christmas.
07:00It's pretty fun to watch.
07:01Has there been an offensive lineman you met across that didn't want the ball?
07:04No, they all want it.
07:05They all want it.
07:08Have you ever in your career completed that before to an offensive lineman?
07:11You can go back to high school?
07:12Not that I can remember.
07:13Not that I can remember.
07:15I'm more surprised at Cody after the catch or Sam's diving touchdown last year.
07:21I mean, both of those tough plays.
07:22I think Cody after the catch, for sure.
