Transcript
00:00What is your advice for the younger generation of artists in fashion?
00:06I don't give advice.
00:09Mark, do you know why you're here today?
00:11To do a lie detector test.
00:14This is Stephanie, our polygraph operator.
00:16Hi, Stephanie.
00:17Hello.
00:18Are you ready to be hooked up?
00:19Yes.
00:22I'll put this around your chest.
00:27How's that feel?
00:28Feels good.
00:29Okay.
00:42I'm going to start by asking a few questions to get a baseline for the machine.
00:46Okay.
00:46Is your name Mark Jacobs?
00:48It is.
00:49Yes.
00:49Yes.
00:50Is your birthday April 9th?
00:52Yes.
00:53Are you about to take a polygraph exam?
00:55Yes.
00:56Are you nervous?
00:57No.
00:59The machine has been calibrated.
01:03Let's start with your career.
01:06Winona Ryder, Lil' Kim, and Courtney Love all wore Mark Jacobs to their respective court trials.
01:12Yes.
01:13Would you be open to styling this person for his trial?
01:19Um, yes.
01:22What kind of look would you style him in?
01:24I think he looks pretty good the way he dresses, actually.
01:28This led to Nordstrom stores selling out of their red sweaters.
01:31Does this make him a trendsetter?
01:33Yes.
01:36In your documentary, you joked,
01:38go to Mark Jacobs for your trial outfits.
01:41Yes.
01:42Does that mean you were offended when this woman didn't wear Mark Jacobs at hers?
01:47No.
01:50Stephanie?
01:51He's being truthful.
01:54You're credited with bringing grunge into high fashion with the legendary 1992 Perialis collection.
02:02Yes.
02:04The long-running story is that the collection got you fired, but you've denied that.
02:08Can you settle this debate once and for all?
02:12Well, it's complicated.
02:14I wasn't fired for it specifically.
02:18My job was terminated because the company didn't want to go forward with doing women's wear.
02:25Stephanie?
02:26That was truthful.
02:28Is it fun hearing rumors about yourself?
02:31Yes.
02:31What's the juiciest rumor you've heard about yourself?
02:38Juiciest rumor I've heard about myself?
02:42I don't know.
02:44The machine is picking up some deception.
02:47Deception?
02:49Why do you like hearing rumors about yourself?
02:51I love attention.
02:53Stephanie?
02:53That was truthful.
02:55Do you believe that all publicity is good publicity?
02:59Yes.
02:59What about this?
03:01Yeah.
03:02That was great.
03:04Care to explain?
03:06Well, there was this awful quote-unquote journalist named Maureen something or other.
03:12I think she worked for The Post or The News or something.
03:14And she wrote this awful book, and I was mentioned in it with some of my friends.
03:20And anyway, she wrote this article, and it was talking about how I had this orgy in my bedroom.
03:25And I just thought it was a good idea to admit it and sort of set the record straight and
03:34use that opportunity to express how sorry I felt for her feeding off of people in order to make money.
03:46Before your Louis Vuitton show at Paris Fashion Week in 1998, you had to send a private jet to rescue
03:52models when they were stuck in Milan.
03:54Yes.
03:55Yes.
03:56Do you frequently charter private jets for helpless models?
04:00No.
04:01Is there someone who really saved the day that you like to thank publicly?
04:05Well, Naomi Campbell sort of led the way for everyone, and that picture went around the world, so thank you,
04:11Naomi.
04:13When was the last time you took a commercial flight?
04:15The last time I went to London a couple weeks ago, a month ago.
04:20That was truthful.
04:22When was the last time you flew coach?
04:25Oh, I have no idea.
04:26It must have been a very long time ago.
04:28Do you feel like you're better than other people because of that?
04:30No, I'm not better than anyone.
04:33Stephanie?
04:33It still looks like he's being truthful.
04:36If the private jet didn't work, would you have stepped in and walked your designs yourself?
04:40No.
04:41I don't think anyone wants to see me on a women's runway.
04:45You've styled and designed for many A-listers throughout your career, including, but not limited to, Cher, Bella Hadid, Miley
04:53Cyrus, and more.
04:54Is there anyone you regret saying yes to?
04:58No.
04:59Is there anyone you're dying to work with?
05:04Dying to work with?
05:05No.
05:05Is there anyone you'd really like to work with?
05:08I love working with Charlie, XCX, so I'd like to do more work with her.
05:14That was truthful.
05:16Let's move on to your life.
05:19You make clothes, and your husband, Charlie...
05:22Yes.
05:23...is a candle maker.
05:24Was.
05:25Was a candle maker.
05:26Yeah, he's still my husband, but he's not making candles anymore.
05:30That's a cute picture.
05:31Was it a non-negotiable to find a partner who would have also thrived during Victorian-era England?
05:37No.
05:39That was truthful.
05:41In 2018, you proposed to your now-husband, Charlie, with a flash mob at a Chipotle.
05:46Yes.
05:47Do you care to comment now on this very Obama-era proposal?
05:53Well, it was fun.
05:54It was a fun thing to do.
05:55He likes to go to Chipotle all the time for his birthday, so we've kept up that tradition.
06:03And I arranged for a flash mob, led by Lauren, who used to cook for us, at a Chipotle, and
06:10he was surprised.
06:11Were there any other scrapped ideas you were thinking about?
06:14No.
06:14No.
06:15We had watched, like, something on YouTube, which was, like, various people, and they're organizing flash mobs,
06:20and we both loved them so much, and we thought it was just so sweet, and we, like, got all
06:26teary-eyed and everything
06:27when that kind of thing happened.
06:29That's what gave me the idea to do it.
06:31Do you remember any of the flash mob dance?
06:34No.
06:35That was truthful.
06:37Did you do this just to get free guac for life?
06:40No.
06:41Do you get free guac when you go into a Chipotle?
06:44Mm.
06:45Um, no.
06:48That looked to be a little deceptive.
06:51I mean, when all the press, when there was a lot of press around Chipotle,
06:55somebody, I guess, high up at Chipotle, like, made us a very generous proposition,
07:01like, you're always welcome, or something like that, but we've never put it to the test.
07:05We've just always paid for what we order.
07:08You've been on a journey with your nails?
07:10Yes.
07:10And have shared a love for the satisfying sound of nails clicking?
07:14Yes.
07:15Have you considered abandoning fashion and instead pursuing a career in ASMR?
07:21No.
07:22Is that because you like talking too much to do ASMR?
07:25Probably.
07:26Yes.
07:27Have you ever used your long nails as an excuse for not responding to an email?
07:31No.
07:33Do you always reply to emails?
07:35No.
07:36That was the truth.
07:38Your close personal friends with filmmaker Sofia Coppola.
07:42Yes.
07:42Who directed your documentary, Mark by Sofia.
07:45Yes.
07:46Do you consider yourself to be a loyal friend?
07:48Yes.
07:49So, does that mean you've seen all of her movies?
07:52I think so, yes.
07:54What about her short film from 1998?
07:57Yes, I've seen it.
07:59Stephanie?
08:00That was truthful.
08:01Did you like it?
08:02Yeah.
08:03Um, Lick the Rats, or Star backwards, yeah.
08:06If you liked it so much, what was it about?
08:08I can't remember.
08:10I can't remember.
08:12Be honest.
08:14Do you think Romy Mars is now the coolest Coppola?
08:18Yes.
08:20She famously once tried to charter a helicopter using her dad's credit card to visit her camp
08:24friend when she was 16.
08:27Yes.
08:27Did you have parenting advice for Sofia when this went down?
08:30No.
08:31Did you approve of Romy's behavior?
08:33Yes.
08:34Stephanie?
08:35That looked to be a little deceptive.
08:38I mean, she's a teenage girl doing teenage girl things.
08:42Do you think all teenage girls try to charter private helicopters?
08:45No, but she's not every teenage girl.
08:48Would you have done this as a teenager if you had the opportunity?
08:51Probably.
08:53Let's move on to pop culture.
08:55You were featured on the cover of Charlie XCX's latest album, Music, Fashion, Film.
09:00Yes.
09:01Alongside Martin Scorsese and John Cale.
09:04Yes.
09:05Was this an Avengers-like situation in which the three of you were just green-screened into
09:09the same room?
09:10No.
09:11So you were all in the same room?
09:13Yes.
09:15F, marry, kill.
09:17Music, fashion, or film?
09:20What?
09:20Huh?
09:21Do you know the game?
09:22Yes, yes.
09:23Okay, so what are the choices?
09:25Again, music.
09:25Music, fashion, film.
09:26Do you know that that's the name of Charlie XCX?
09:28Yeah, yes, yes, yes.
09:29I do.
09:31Fuck fashion.
09:33Marry music.
09:35Kill film.
09:38Do you hate films?
09:39No, but I had to choose one, right?
09:43You've acted in a few projects.
09:45Yes.
09:45Most recently, The Devil Wears Prada 2.
09:47Yes.
09:48Have you ever been approached by this person to act in one of their projects?
09:52No.
09:54Would you act in a project if it was a spinoff, a feud about you and Tom Ford?
09:58Sure.
09:59Yes.
10:00Stephanie?
10:01That was truthful.
10:02Do you think this actor would do a good job of playing Marc Jacobs?
10:06Yes.
10:07What would he have to do to get fully in character?
10:10Get his nails done.
10:12A tag from your clothing inspired a viral meme.
10:16No.
10:18Yes.
10:18Is this a real tag?
10:20Yes.
10:21Were you afraid people might miss the first three Marc Jacobs?
10:24No.
10:26Is it safe to say that trolling is a part of your brand?
10:30What's trolling?
10:31Teasing, making fun of people.
10:33Yes.
10:35Was it this trolling?
10:38No.
10:38I didn't know how to navigate Instagram very well.
10:41And I was in my apartment in Paris.
10:43And I was flirting with this guy in Brazil.
10:47And he asked me to send him a photo of my a**.
10:50So I did.
10:51But I thought I had sent it to him.
10:53But I hadn't.
10:55I'd actually posted it.
10:57Because I didn't know what I was doing.
10:59And what I had written to him in text with the photo was,
11:03It's yours to try.
11:05So somebody thought it was very funny and made a t-shirt.
11:08And I thought it was pretty cool.
11:10So I wore the t-shirt.
11:11It was a full circle moment.
11:13Do you regret posting that photo?
11:15No.
11:16You like to work with new models on the runway,
11:19but hold certain fashion icons and high esteem.
11:22Would you say this person is this generation's Kate Moss?
11:26No.
11:27What about this person?
11:30No.
11:32Is she more of a Linda Evangelista?
11:34No.
11:36Is that because you don't like pitting women against women?
11:38Yes.
11:39Partially, yes.
11:41Partially what else?
11:42Well, she's Kaya Gerber.
11:44And the other woman is Alex Kinsani.
11:46So I remember like when I was younger, a lot younger,
11:51and my grandmother might have said it like he'll be the next Calvin Klein.
11:54And someone else corrected her, said no, he will be Marc Jacobs, not the next so-and-so.
12:02So I think I've always had that in my head, like never to say things like the next so-and
12:09-so, whatever.
12:10What is your advice for the younger generation of artists in fashion?
12:14I don't give advice.
12:15That was truthful.
12:17Why not?
12:18I can share my experience, but I'm not far be it for me to give advice.
12:23You cast this woman.
12:25Oh, yeah.
12:25In her first ever fashion show.
12:27Yes.
12:27Do you feel responsible for her career success?
12:30No.
12:31Stephanie?
12:31That was truthful.
12:33Do you think you should get a cut of any of her future brand deals?
12:36No.
12:37Would you like to get a cut?
12:39No.
12:41Stephanie?
12:41That was deceptive.
12:43Deceptive?
12:44Yeah, I guess so.
12:46I'll take it.
12:48Anybody going to throw money at me, I'll take it.
12:50That was truthful.
12:52Final question.
12:53Okay.
12:54Did you lie at any point during this lie detector test and we didn't catch you?
12:57No.
12:58That was truthful.
13:00Congratulations.
13:05You
