00:00Zambia's president Akainde Ichilema won re-election with around 60% of votes cast last week,
00:06the Electoral Commission announced on Tuesday after a race critic said was tightly managed
00:12by his government. Ichilema, who has been in power since 2021, faced a crowded field of 13
00:19challenges led by former provincial minister Brian Mundubile, making his first bid for the
00:27presidency. According to the Electoral Commission, Mundubile, who entered the race in May, secured
00:33nearly 38% of the vote. The commission, however, said five of the 226 constituencies had not been
00:42tallied and the outstanding results, quote, are not likely to materially influence the overall result
00:49of that election. Zambia's 13 August election was widely seen as a referendum on Ichilema's first
00:56term. It was, however, overshadowed by opposition allegations of fraud and an unprecedented
01:01nationwide suspension of votes tallying a day after polling following attacks on election
01:08staff and the theft of marked ballot papers. The suspension was later lifted the same day.
01:13The EU observation mission warned at the weekend that restrictions on the opposition in the
01:18campaigning period may have contributed to an, quote, uneven contest.
