00:02what's up everybody welcome back to another edition of liberty lately dexter henry joined
00:07by my good friend madeline kenny who is joining us from chicago it's liberty set to take on the
00:13sky on tuesday maddie how are you doing i'm good i'm good i love chicago so i'm i'm glad to
00:19be back
00:20it's good you know what what is do you have a least favorite road city to be on in the
00:28w i always
00:29ask molly walker this when we do ranger stuff but uh is there a city just like chicago's up there
00:35for
00:36you i'm sure yeah yeah i mean i used to live in chicago that's like i have this here um
00:40but it's
00:40also just a great city in the summertime it is i would say so i like atlanta i don't like
00:48where
00:48the arena is located because i end up usually just staying by the airport because it's close to the
00:52arena same with dallas because you're actually in arlington and there's not a lot of arlington
00:58there's good barbecue but you gotta like uber everywhere it's just not ideal for somebody
01:02that's there for work so those are i think two cities that i'm like not my favorite um and then
01:07connecticut i was about to say i was shocked you didn't say that i have not spent much time
01:12there i usually drive up the day of the game and drive home at night um haven't really spent any
01:19money at the casino which i think is a win for me and so i that's another one but you
01:25know when i
01:26covered the nba would go to houston i like houston i'm fortunate obviously that connecticut's losing
01:31their team but houston's a good city houston's a good city gain gain that next year so it'll be
01:36very interesting a lot of good stuff to talk about with the liberty i wanted to start here and talking
01:41about satsu saboli because she's clear concussion protocol but she still doesn't feel like herself
01:47right and she stepped away from the team for a little bit it's undisclosed amount of time we don't
01:52know when she will be back um with the team i want to try to talk about some context because
01:58knowing that this is her second significant head injury in the last 12 months there is a human
02:04element to this that matters right maddie where we almost have to stop talking about hey what's the
02:08return timeline when is she going to return and say which i think the liberty have done here is just
02:13take as much time as you need right what do you think we've learned about the way satsu and the
02:19liberty have handled this situation with her what do you make of all that because you wrote a really
02:24good column about that but i wanted you to speak on that some more thank you yeah yeah thank you
02:28um i
02:28mean i want to go back and just acknowledge that like once you have a concussion studies show that you
02:35are more likely to have a concussion again and it's an even higher risk within a certain time period
02:41after that first concussion um you're more susceptible to them and then also on your second concussion or if you
02:48have multiple your symptoms generally according to like studies that i read uh get worse um and that
02:55can be like a very scary thing for somebody um especially when i think about like satsu and what
03:00she went through with that first concussion she was out all the way until she missed all of unrivaled
03:05didn't come back to start doing like basketball stuff until march um had a gradual ramp up to the season
03:11which was you know part of the liberty showing like their patience and just trying to help her get back
03:16to
03:16you know feeling confident in her game again and uh you know she was starting to really hit her
03:21stride it felt like because again she missed the early part of the season because of that cyst and
03:25then she was late late may missed a few games because of an illness and it just felt like you
03:31know that in
03:31june she was really starting to come into her own and you were starting to see like what is satsu
03:36look
03:36like with the liberty and then the concussion happens and so i think like the way that the liberty have
03:41handled this is and and i think her the support that satsu has around her in general um i'm talking
03:49about like her own team her family her friends like liberty they have all like rallied around her
03:55and are supporting her through as she navigates you know what's next because coming back from
04:02a head injury i mean there is like some trauma that you have to go through or maybe trauma is
04:09not the
04:09right word but you know like it just is going to take time for you to feel more like yourself
04:13again
04:14and even when you're coming back from let's say like a knee injury or an ankle injury it takes time
04:19for you to trust your knee or your ankle again and so i think that the fact that the liberty
04:23have given
04:24her this opportunity to step away to take all the time she needs sabrina unescu had stressed that there
04:33is absolutely no pressure on her that she has to be back at a certain date because they don't want
04:37her
04:37to feel like she has to rush back or come back too soon um sabrina talks about like sometimes you
04:43come
04:43back too soon and your body lets you know that you came back too soon and so i think the
04:47fact that
04:47they're giving her this this long runway and this opportunity to navigate it the best way that she
04:53can navigate it is you know kudos to liberty for doing that um but i would hope that any organization
04:59when you have a player dealing with a head injury which is obviously a very severe injury um
05:06and not something you want to take lightly you want to you have to think about like the long-term
05:12uh physical and mental impacts you know um and their long-term health in general i would say
05:18and so i think that the liberty are doing what's right by allowing her to have this time i i
05:25100%
05:25agree with you and you know listen injuries are tough like you said all around even just for
05:33everyday regular folks like i had achilles surgery this year right you know yeah and i'm i'm at the
05:40point of you know just getting more confident with walking right i'm not even trying to play
05:45basketball right i'm not a professional athlete like satsu sabli is so i i think there's a way we
05:50can discuss this because i'm sure you've seen this too maddie a lot of fans are saying okay well when's
05:55she coming back what's coming back i know you get tweeted at people ask the questions what when is this
05:59happening but with all that being said and how the liberty have handled it do you feel like this is
06:04a situation with the liberty now and the team i'm talking about the team everybody top to bottom
06:08they have to just mentally prepare as though satsu is not coming back because we talk so much about
06:15mindset right in sports and it feels like the team now has to like try to mentally prepare that
06:20she's not coming back do you look at that as a challenge for the liberty or because of the way
06:24they've handled this right and we're both giving them praise for how they've handled this and her team
06:29that this will now be i'll say easier for the liberty and the team to handle this transition of
06:38whatever that is and how it may look like yeah i think that you do operate with that mindset because
06:44you have to start forming your identity and and ramping up and if you do get saw two back i
06:48mean that's
06:49just plus right um 10 games or less than 10 games left in the season uh you do have to
06:56start preparing
06:56for the playoffs and you have to start think about okay what team who's going to be able to play
07:00in
07:00the playoffs and i think like there's a little bit more well the liberty have been really bad about
07:05getting giving any timelines on any injuries this season um there's been a little more i don't know
07:13maybe optimism around like leone feebich and like her recovery we have tangible updates on like what
07:18she's doing on the court and stuff like that and so you know you can kind of bank on leo
07:23being back
07:24based off of you know reading the tea leaves and everything and saw two there's a little bit more
07:29of a question mark um and so i think you do operate in a sense of okay we might we're
07:36probably not going
07:36to get saw if we don't know if we're going to get saw two back let's just operate like we're
07:39not going
07:39to get saw two back not that we wouldn't welcome her if she is back but just let's start to
07:44figure
07:44out how things look like without her and i think we've kind of seen they've been forced to do that
07:48over the last uh month and a half or so um and we've also been seeing them have to like
07:54fill in
07:55the hole for leone feebich as well i mean i wrote about this today uh liberty had wing depth heading
08:02into this season and now it seems like they have no wing depth um not necessarily it's not like colb
08:09has
08:09a crystal ball to see the future and what injuries might arise but you know it's unfortunate because
08:17you had leo satoo benajah now all three of those are um not contributing or gone yeah i was just
08:25saying to somebody the other day i'm like when you look at this liberty team so much of their struggles
08:29will get into their recent play which has been good or appears to be good has been defensively they
08:35just haven't been who we thought they could be in the beginning of the season before the season
08:38you and i we lauded their depth we were like man this is great they have all these wings that
08:43they should be really good defensively your depth is only as good as it is when you have it when
08:48you
08:48don't have it it's not so good um but here they are now the liberty they are nine and two
08:54over their
08:54last 11 games here's the thing though maddie if i just it's funny asking you this because you watch
09:00all the games you were there for all the games but if i just handed you that record without letting
09:05you watch any of the games you probably say okay considering what this team went through in the
09:09beginning of the season they are back right but after you've watched these games these last 11 games
09:16and how they've gotten to nine and two because the context matters are you convinced that this team
09:21has turned a corner or are you still saying i got some question marks about them they've turned a
09:27corner i don't know if it's the corner i don't know if it's the corner leading to the final 100
09:33yard meter stretch or whatever but they've turned a corner um look i think like brianna stewart said
09:39after the last game in connecticut that they just feel like they're a more connected team at this point
09:43um obviously they have a lot more experience with that starting lineup that includes beck allen
09:48um sabrina unescu missed the last game with a foot injury her status for the sky game is not
09:56clear as of four o'clock monday um probably we'll find that out in two hours or so but but
10:03i think
10:03that they're starting to form an identity there are still some pressing concerns on defense that i have
10:10with this team um you know some of it comes down to like rotations and uh or missed rotations or
10:19slow
10:19rotations or slow closeouts or miscommunication at times um the perimeter defense has been really rough
10:25teams are shooting like the second most or making the second most threes um in the last 15 games in
10:33the league against the liberty and they're shooting they're converting at a really high clip and some of
10:37that it's like like i think we saw that in the fever game where you're like oh this shooting is
10:41not
10:41sustainable right but if you're just giving open looks for a team full of sharpshooters it's definitely
10:48a sustainable clip and so i think that's probably my biggest area i'm not concerned about the offense i think
10:54the offense is going to score a lot of points they're not going to have an issue with that
10:58more so concerned about can the liberty um and yeah the liberty offense does have long stretches
11:05where they go without scoring which can be a concerning at can be concerning at time but i think
11:09like the biggest thing is they have to be better at getting stops and they don't really have that like
11:14elite point of attack defender that is gonna lock down somebody or put the clamps on
11:20um someone and so that's something that like i've been noticing and like making note of
11:27yeah and i think we'll get to this more but i think that's my biggest concern with this team as
11:32they try
11:32to as you said we talked about this last year too on a stretch right this is the time where
11:36you want
11:36to form your identity this is the time where you want to kind of know who they are be honest
11:40to you
11:40did say the team is more connected right but where i have some pause is because you can look at
11:44the stretch of the 11 games maddie and when the liberty had their chance against one of the better
11:49teams in the league in the fever they beat them 106 and 92 right and they had them down with
11:5521 they
11:55were down 21 in the first half of that game when you look at that game did that game expose
12:01anything
12:01you kind of hit on it with the outside shooting and the perimeter defense there but did it expose
12:04anything about this liberty team that you felt like okay this is the real problem was it that game
12:09where you said okay i know the defense is a little suspect when you have a team that's got
12:13shooters like the fever do and scorers just overall did that game exposed to you like really exposed
12:19to you that like the defense is an issue here yeah i think so but i also think that you're
12:26going up
12:26against a historically awesome offense that's probably going to make everyone look bad at some point but
12:32but i do think it like kind of put a spotlight on that part that's been an increasing concern and
12:38something that we've been talking about more and more in recent weeks and so i think obviously you get
12:42leo back um that changes your whole defensive identity um you're not asking as much of certain
12:49other certain players you know to do more like they are right now i think defensively the liberty are
12:55trying to plug the holes of like asatu and leo not being in the rotation with this like by committee
13:02type thing um or type approach where it's team defense and all of that um which is extremely important
13:08but i think it's also like who who are you going to put on caitlin clark or kelsey mitchell like
13:14you
13:14know maybe i i almost wondered if they should have started rebecca gardner you know um who's probably
13:20one of your better point of attack defenders yeah yeah yeah at this point um you know so i think
13:29yeah
13:30it's yeah and even in saying that when we're going down the lineup like even putting rebecca
13:35gardner in this to go on caitlin clark or kelsey mitchell it's not ideal but because she has her
13:42limitations offensively but this is where i have i'm a little concerned about them in some series
13:48to certain matchups do they have that person now to your point that you made earlier if they get leo
13:53back and she's right that changes a lot for them you still like another maybe really good primitive
13:59defender and this is where if they get satu back that they'd be even better but you got to get
14:06there first you've also talked a lot in recent weeks about jonquil jones and you said she needs
14:12to give the team more of a physical presence inside we've seen some better play from her down low lately
14:17and then i also got to add maureen johannes in this too because we know how streaky she can be
14:22with
14:22the shooting sometimes she takes some shots where i'm like wow you did that i can't believe you took
14:26that shot but she's an x-factor who can completely change a game offensively with the fact that we're
14:32talking about that this roster looks different maddie than we may have expected earlier in the
14:36year are we starting to see a new liberty formula emerge around those two jonquil and marine who've
14:43also played well in the two-woman game too we've seen them play well off each other are we starting
14:47to see something new that liberty can unlock with those two i don't know if it's like something new
14:52that they can unlock but i think the biggest thing with jj is if you look at like her stats
14:57like
14:58from a scoring standpoint and even like field goal attempts um she takes a lot more in the first half
15:03and the second half and i asked chris about that after the last game and he said well it's the
15:06adjustments that the other team are making at halftime that are they're trying to get to jj and
15:11like limit her impact on the offensive end and i think that that's something where the liberty have to
15:15like make a counter um adjustment and making sure that she's still getting her touches in the paint or
15:21or just getting jj the ball in different you know situations throughout the game not letting it be
15:28you know heavy at one point and lighter at the other i think there has to be more balanced in
15:33the way that they use jj in certain aspects but i do think jj has provided a huge lift especially
15:40because brianna stewart as much as she's literally carried this team all season she's kind of starting
15:47to hit that like wall that she tends to hit at certain like you know later in the season just
15:53because she's given so much and the workload and and the usage and everything um and so i think
16:01jj has been incredible as i said um she's really provided him a lift and then marine johannes i mean
16:06that fourth quarter uh against connecticut was so fun i mean she's she makes so many shots that you're
16:13like why did you take that and then it goes in and you're like just kidding that was great um
16:16but
16:17just the confidence is the biggest thing for marine and so how her to have a quarter like that is
16:23is
16:23huge for her because um she is a player and she and i've talked to her about this like she's
16:28the type
16:29of player that can kind of get in her own head and the coaching staff is trying to just give
16:34her so
16:35much confidence because i do think that they see her as this x factor in certain ways and the way
16:40they
16:40can deploy her off the bench and she can come in and hit a couple quick threes and you know
16:45that
16:46stuff can kind of swing games right and so or swing momentum in games and so i think you're right
16:52like
16:52jj and marine are sneaky like really important parts of this team especially when you have
17:00sabrina unescu didn't play the last game and brianna stewart you know she i think in connecticut she
17:06missed her first seven shots and she was getting like generally like looks that brianna stewart makes
17:11you know um but i think again i i don't i'm not worried about brianna stewart by any means just
17:18to
17:18be clear yeah not worried not worried about her although you're right she has carried this team
17:23on her back all season long so let's i'm gonna try to get back to the roster right and remove
17:29some
17:30things from the equation the unknown from the equation i'll say just for a second let's assume that
17:34satsu sabli doesn't come back um leone fibic we've heard better stuff on about her and hopefully she
17:40does come back but even if she doesn't come back if this group that we see right now is essentially
17:44the group that the liberty have to take into the postseason do you believe that there is enough here
17:50for them to win a championship do you think this team is currently constructed and what we're seeing
17:54can win it all i'm never gonna bet against brianna stewart because of her ability to be able to like
18:01take over a game right though the team do a win but based off of everything we've seen this season
18:08i don't think that they have enough to win a championship and i don't think that's surprising
18:12to anyone i just think uh you know sabrina's been really open about this idea of like oh once the
18:19playoffs start like it'll be a clean slate record doesn't matter we're gonna turn the page and
18:23you know like there's this feeling of like leo sabrina brianna jj like they've been here before
18:29they've won championships together they've also lost in disappointing fashions and so they kind of
18:35like know how to navigate the highs and lows of the playoffs but i think it was ambitious to think
18:40a first-year coaching staff with not a lot of wnba experience would come in and you know take this
18:50team to the promised land so to speak um i think there has been growing pains within this roster
18:57um i also have questions about the roster construction um all that depth that we thought
19:02this team had ended up not being as solid as previously thought it would be um you know i
19:08think i wrote for the trade deadline that they should have added uh maybe a another big um to help
19:15with
19:15the depth because i don't know if i totally trust i feel like raquel carrera has the potential to be
19:21a
19:21really great player down the line but i just feel like she's still a little bit raw and adjusting to
19:25the wnba speed and physicality and learning her role hon defensively has some concerns i just feel
19:32like their front court depth is very thin right now and um i'm just thinking about like playoff
19:40rotations and i know your rotation shrinks in the playoffs you tighten it up but um i just don't know
19:46if this team has enough based off of what they've shown us you know over the past two and a
19:53half
19:53three months this season yeah i don't know if i'm sure all right as we wrap here i want to
19:58talk
19:58about the next couple of games on the liberty schedule indiana rematch coming saturday night
20:03that's going to be a big one at the barclays center we will be there but you are in chi
20:07town
20:07liberty have chicago on tuesday night you look at the sky's record 13 wins on the season and i feel
20:14like this is one of these games where you're looking at this liberty team what we're talking about
20:18where they have enough where the result just getting the w is not going to be enough for you
20:23do you want to see the liberty like come out of this game and control the game and dominate
20:29that'll show you that hey this is a team that understands exactly what time of year this is
20:33and what they need to get done are you looking at this as more than the result for this game
20:37in
20:37chicago on tuesday yeah i feel like the sky have given the liberty some troubles this season right
20:44um last time they were here or i can't remember if it was here or home but one of the
20:51last meetings
20:51it was like sabrina unescu who makes the layup at the end of the game to save the day right
20:56like
20:56rescues the team um from what would have been a not great loss or a bad loss um and so
21:05i think that
21:06if you're the liberty you want to come out you want to control things you want to disrupt you
21:12want to blow things up for the sky and um really impose your will in the way that you want
21:17to play
21:18i think sometimes a lot of opponents are catching the liberty on their heels and
21:21they're allowing their the opposing team to dictate how the game is being played and the liberty are at
21:28their best when they are the ones that are in control and which i mean i think you could say
21:33for
21:33anyone so maybe that's a little bit of a duh but i i think that you want to see them
21:40play
21:40four quarters of complete basketball because one of the issues with the liberty too is that
21:45they've been so painfully inconsistent this season and we're not even just talking about like
21:50inconsistent with stretches of games it's like from quarter to quarter they can be you know night
21:55and day and so we really haven't seen them string together like a full 40 minute effort of of
22:03dominance that you can feel really good about um i even think about that la was it the la game
22:09when
22:09they had like three really solid quarters and then they gave up 40 points in the fourth it's like
22:14you know um gave up only 42 points for the first three quarters and so i think that's the biggest
22:21thing is they've got to be able to like have this sustained um control and not let when things start
22:30to unravel not let it become like a total snowball effect which i think has been an issue at times
22:36this season yeah no we've no doubt seen that and you know you'd like to see them dominate the chicago
22:41matchup we'll see but they've been inconsistent that takes us to saturday and we spent a lot of this
22:46episode talking about a decent part of it whether they've turned their season around and they've
22:51really turned the corner you said they've turned a corner not the corner and i think we all know
22:56the corners when you're feeling really good about a team with the way they're playing with all that
23:00being said saturday against indiana it feels like a perfect opportunity right mandy for them to like
23:06show us something right maybe it's not turning the corner but show us something we just saw the fever
23:12drop 106 on them they're one of the elite offenses in the history of the sport what do you need
23:19to
23:19see from the liberty in that rematch to walk away where you're like okay this version of liberty is
23:25different or maybe they're close to turning the corner what what do you need to see in that matchup
23:30a win and like shutting down uh caitlin and kelsey mitchell and i think they've done a pretty good job
23:36protecting the pain as of late but i think again um you can't let kelsey mitchell and caitlin clark
23:43combine for 50 points or or whatever it was that's just uh not great obviously and so i think this
23:51is
23:52a measuring stick match for them this is an opportunity for them to show that they can you
23:56know measure up to a team that is a serious title contender um because the liberty right now i don't
24:03know if i put them in that conversation of title contenders just because they haven't been consistent
24:07enough they've won some really great wins or some they've had some great wins on their schedule
24:12also had some really bad losses and so i think it's hard to look at this team and be and
24:18feel good and
24:19be like yeah they're i don't even know where they're at in the standings but thanks yeah they're
24:23six in the standings is that a title contender now sabrina unescu has said that they don't see
24:29themselves as like a traditional seven seed or wherever they were when she was talking about that
24:35but i do think that this saturday is a big game for them to just show that they can measure
24:41up
24:43so as we're recording this they're a game behind atlanta they're a game and a half behind indiana
24:50the tiebreakers are not favorable for a lot of the teams that are ahead of them down the stretch
24:54have eight games to play um do you think they can get a top four seed because i i'm with
24:59you that
25:00they don't look like a title contender i'm with you on that maddie i don't think they look like that
25:04and because of what you just said about inconsistencies but do you think they can get a top four seed
25:09heading into the playoffs are you feeling good the only way i think it works out is if like the
25:14liberty
25:15went out because a lot of the top four five six seeds right now are playing each other and that
25:23might actually bode well for the liberty because if i remember correctly they have sky on two of these
25:29games um got the fever one more time for one more time uh i'm trying to think of like i'm
25:38pulling it
25:38up keep talking i'm pulling yeah yeah i'm trying to think of like i know that their last two games
25:42the season are atlanta dream they have toronto um who obviously is out of the playoff picture
25:48um minnesota top seed so i don't know i feel like depending on how things shake out it's very
25:56possible that they get to a fourth seed it's not out of the realm of possibility but you also have
26:01players that have talked about you know it's going to be different not having home court advantage so
26:05i think there's also um there's some reality within that locker room of they might be on the
26:13road to start a playoff series and how are they going to handle that yeah and and the thing for
26:18me
26:18is you know it kind of goes back to what you mentioned before which is about the lack of
26:24perimeter defense that i just don't trust right now that's the thing for me too it's like if they had
26:29if i knew the defense was going to be solid then i might feel better about how this team could
26:35look
26:35with their playoff prospects but because they just don't have really good perimeter defense right now
26:40the defense has been wildly inconsistent and or they've been inconsistent overall as you've said
26:45i just i i just don't trust them right now as a contender now to your point um and i'm
26:53still
26:53trying to pull up the schedule i don't know why it's giving me such a hard time um i do
26:57think that
26:59the game against the fever matters right like i do think that they need to have a good showing just
27:07for a confidence now there's no moral victories a close loss is not i'm with you they need a w
27:13so i'm with you on that but at some point maybe we're gonna have to start talking about this they
27:20just don't have the bodies to defend elite offenses in the w right now again it's a shame they've been
27:28robbed of that due to injuries but the reality is what what it is like this is no shade to
27:34some of
27:34the ladies on the roster but some of the ladies are thrown out just they can't stay in front of
27:38elite offensive players how much do you feel like or or would you attribute some of this to is it
27:44the roster construction is it the coaching staff's responsibility in terms of the scheme and game
27:51planning and just making sure players are prepared and no opposing tendencies or opponents tendencies or
27:57is it on the players and just the way that they're executing or is it a combination of all three
28:03yeah i feel like that's a maddie answer so i don't want to go with that i i cop out
28:10just like everyone
28:11no i but it's okay i don't want to give the cop out answer either i think it is a
28:20combination but i
28:21do think it's something you said earlier in the episode right like some of it is roster construction
28:25but i can't fully blame jonathan kolb and say okay you could have foreseen these injuries coming now
28:31somebody might argue they might say well hey dex and maddie what if the liberty didn't spend as much
28:38as they spent on satu and they spread that among maybe a couple more players okay maybe but you also
28:46want to try to get as much elite talent as you can and satu when healthy is an elite two
28:51-way player
28:52um that's a reason sorry say that put say that again color unicorn for a reason right that the liberty
29:00right now just right now they don't have enough two-way players now some of it they banked on for
29:07reasons that we don't even get into bonajah and in her health and then she's now not on the team
29:12leo hasn't been healthy leo's also played a lot of basketball we should talk about too that's over
29:18a year like yeah basketball a lot of basketball she's played that's a lot of miles on a player who
29:24we both believe is really really integral to this team's success right because of how good of a
29:29two-way player she is they just don't have enough good two-way players i mean you got stewie
29:33you have jj in your starting lineup sab has some limitations defensively and she needs help in
29:40the backcourt they just don't have enough now he didn't pick up you know yeah like tower of many
29:48feet and i mean she's just getting like heading into the all-star break she hit that rookie wall
29:52she was just gassed yeah he's played in a short amount of time so and i'm super high on pauline
29:58right like i'm super high on her and her game but i just don't think they have enough i don't
30:02know
30:02if it's fair to blame colt for it all could he have seen this coming injuries happen sometimes
30:09look that's my thing where they are right now i think the liberty are not a bad team by any
30:13means
30:13of course they're just i don't think they're good enough defensively right now now that can change
30:18there could be a world in next month you and i are talking and we're like satu's back and looking
30:22good and leone's looking good and that changes a lot for this team and they could be really dangerous
30:27but right now there's too many questions agreed too many questions all right we probably spent too
30:33much time talking on this uh maddie's got to get back to enjoying one of her favorite road
30:38destinations at w that is writing actually first but oh that should just do some work there you go
30:44people work before the pleasure but we got to let maddie get back to enjoying she's got some good
