President Donald Trump honored 16-year-old California lifeguard Ryder Williams at the White House on Monday after the teenager became a national hero for rescuing a 10-year-old boy from dangerous ocean waves.

Williams was on duty on July 25 when Nathaniel Rai was swept into the water by powerful waves. He immediately rushed into the rough surf and grabbed the boy before another lifeguard helped bring them safely back to shore. The dramatic rescue was captured on video and quickly went viral.

During their meeting in the Oval Office, Trump praised the teenager’s bravery, saying, “It’s an honor to be with Ryder Williams.”

Trump added, “I understand he was a winner right from the time they first saw him as a lifeguard.” Referring to the rescue, he said, “What you did was incredible and everybody saw it.”

Trump also described Williams as an inspiration for young Americans and highlighted the importance of lifeguards.

Williams said his training helped him remain focused during the emergency and expressed hope that others would be encouraged to help people around them.
