00:01Welcome to Day 5 of the 470 World Championships in Enoshima near Tokyo in Japan.
00:08This is the venue where the Olympic Games took place five years ago on these exact same waters
00:15and we have some of those Olympic medalists competing here today on Day 5 of the Worlds.
00:20Hi, my name's Andy Rice, Sailing Journalist from the UK and I'm delighted to be joined today
00:25by an Olympic gold medalist from Rio 2016 in the 470, Croatia's Ijo Maranic.
00:31It's great to have you joining me today to bring your expertise here, welcome.
00:37Thank you, thank you Andy and I'm happy to do this with you, happy to comment some hopefully good 470
00:46racing.
00:46And it's been a really interesting competition so far and we've had three gold fleet races yesterday.
00:54It was sort of a restart for the competition and now we're hoping to have three races on Day 5.
01:02And now we're looking at the build up to the start of our first of three races today.
01:07We've got just about 20 seconds to go and as you can see they're still quite line shy at this
01:13committee boat end
01:14but they're looking dangerously close to the pin end of the line up the far end of the line from
01:19where our drone footage is.
01:22Eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
01:30It's go time and off they go and it's a good start by Poland 11 off this end of the
01:37line.
01:37China won, they made a great start yesterday off this end of the line but they are a little bit
01:42compromised by Israel.
01:44Ukraine is able to tack away early and we've got a couple of port tack starters underneath the bulk of
01:52the starboards
01:52and Germany 20 has managed to break through really nicely onto an early port tack.
01:58And in the far distance I can see Spain 44 on the far side leading the charge out towards the
02:05left-hand side.
02:06Egil, where would you like to be out of this start at this stage? Who do you think is doing
02:10well?
02:14It's very hard when I'm not on the water but I thought there was a slight pin bias and I
02:20think that that's why the big chunk of fleet was fighting to start there.
02:25I even thought maybe some boats were too aggressive and maybe went over the line.
02:32Looking at the course today like the previous days I think if I would be in the boat I would
02:39have, you know,
02:40difficult time deciding for myself where to go because last days were quite, I would say, irregular.
02:47We had a typhoon passed by Enoshima a few days ago and it completely changed all the patterns that, you
02:56know, sailors know.
02:57And it's pretty much go for what you see game this week.
03:02Which makes it very exciting or very stressful however you choose to see it.
03:08Yeah, yeah, sure.
03:09But Ukraine 22 for starting at the committee boat end and it wasn't the best start but it put them
03:15in a fantastic position to be first to tack on to Port Tack.
03:19So early gains for Yeho Samarin and Yelizveta Vasylenko.
03:26I'm going to have to get better at these names or maybe you can help me, Igor.
03:31Yeah, yeah, sure.
03:32Some names are also, you know, hard for me to pronounce.
03:36So I stick to boat sail numbers, you know.
03:41Yeah, that's the easier way, isn't it?
03:44So quite a few boats tacking onto starboard here and just left of screen, just going out of image was
03:51France 10.
03:52We're seeing some good performances by Manon Peneneyash and Pierre Williot.
03:58They are, they've had, they've been not so good in gold fleet actually.
04:02They were really good in qualifying.
04:05Qualifying into the gold fleet in third place and they dropped back a little bit.
04:09And then there's a team on the right of picture, Sweden 349.
04:13Igor, tell me about that team, you know them very well.
04:17Yeah, yeah, we used to work together in the past preparing for the Paris games.
04:24We did two, two and a half years together and yeah, we finished or we crowned that relationship at Marseille
04:33at the Paris games with the bronze medal.
04:35So it was a very, very good collaboration in both, you know, professional but also like a personal level.
04:42I'm good friends with Anton since, you know, Optimist time and then yeah, had a great time with Lovisa in
04:49the team.
04:50And then Anton's family is super supportive, Anton's wife also part of the team.
04:55So yeah, had a great time in that team, yeah.
04:57Yeah, so Anton Dahlberg and Lovisa Lin are doing very well in this race right now, Sweden 349.
05:06As Igor said, the bronze medalists in Paris 2024 and Anton had done so many campaigns that I thought maybe
05:14the Paris campaign would be his swan song.
05:17So I was surprised, I have to say, but also delighted to see them back again.
05:23And Lovisa Carlsen now changes her name to Lovisa Linna.
05:28So I'm assuming Igor that she got married since Paris 2024.
05:33Yeah, exactly. She got married some four or five weeks ago.
05:38And yeah, I was there at the wedding, so we had a nice, nice little party.
05:43But yeah, they came back, back to sailing, like just maybe two, two months ago.
05:50Or okay, they did some trainings back at home a bit more time ago.
05:54But yeah, this is actually their second regatta since comeback.
05:59And the last one they did was at LA at the Sailing Grand Slam where they did actually win a
06:07bronze medal.
06:08So yeah, let's say they had a good comeback, great comeback.
06:12Very, very fast comeback.
06:14Yeah.
06:15Meanwhile, a team that those Swedes will know very well.
06:19It's ESP 44, the reigning world champions looking to defend their world title.
06:25that Jordi Jamar Amato Cardona won last year in Godinia in Poland.
06:31And you can see just how hard they're working.
06:34Jamar really working hard as helm.
06:38And he's he sailed with Nora Brugman in the lead up to Paris.
06:42They must have been really disappointed not to win a medal in Paris 2024.
06:47But now he's back again.
06:49Jamar the bronze medalist with Nico Rodriguez at Tokyo 2020 and Men's 470.
06:56So this is a venue he's done very well at.
06:58And he's doing very well with Marta Cardona, his new crew winning the worlds and the European titles.
07:05And certainly in contention to win another world title this week.
07:10Would you say that they have gone in this week as favorites equal?
07:13Or would you put somebody else ahead of them?
07:16They are always among the favorites.
07:19As you could see in the close up before, they are I believe one of the most physical teams.
07:29They really enjoy when the Oscar flag is up.
07:33Oscar flag means that rules for rocking, pumping do not apply.
07:39So teams can do really whatever they want.
07:42And I think this team of Jordi and Marta really mastered their pumping technique.
07:49And they really enjoy those conditions.
07:51So yeah, but also they are having a very strong week since the start.
07:58They really push hard.
07:59I mean every competition they attend, they are among the favorites.
08:02And this one is no exception.
08:04And I'm not sure whether we can quite put the Swedes as favorites to get on the podium this week.
08:10As Igor just said, they did manage to make a very fast comeback to a campaign that's only two months
08:16old.
08:17Getting the bronze medal at the event recently in California where the Olympic Games will be held for Los Angeles
08:242028 in two years time.
08:26But they had a bit of a rocky qualifying phase.
08:30I think they only just scraped in to the top 37 for gold fleet.
08:35Am I right in saying, Igor?
08:37Yeah, exactly.
08:38So we are having a very big fleet here in Urshema.
08:42Seventy-four boats who sail in two fleets of 37.
08:46And yeah, so they entered the gold fleet as actually last boat, last team to qualify.
08:51And now they are sort of on rise trying to qualify for the medal race tomorrow.
08:59And let's see if they can do it in the three races today.
09:02So far they are doing nice in the first race.
09:06So let's see how they can do today.
09:10And the difference about this format is that the end of qualifying after the first two days of racing,
09:18instead of counting all your scores, it's your finishing position that gets consolidated into effectively your first race result.
09:26So they went into gold fleet yesterday with a 37th place effectively for race one of the finals.
09:34Have I described that correctly?
09:36Yeah, that is correct.
09:38That is correct.
09:38So a carry forward is basically your position as a first race, as you said.
09:43And yeah, so they entered the gold fleet with the 37 points.
09:49And yeah, now they have some catch up to do.
09:52Now, Igor, you won your gold medal in Rio 2016 at the end of a very successful campaign and career
09:59with Shimei Fantela.
10:02How much body movement was involved?
10:05How much of this Oscar flag body movement were you doing back when you were racing 470s 10 years ago?
10:11No, it was on.
10:13I think as the sport evolves and fitness also evolves, I think if anything, teams do it even harder now.
10:24But yeah, I do remember some races where I would go to Shimei, you know, you do strategy and tactics
10:32and I'm in my max heart rate and I keep pushing the boat fast, but you do the rest.
10:38So I think it's pretty similar to the to the to the sailors now in these kind of conditions.
10:43Yeah, yeah.
10:44So that's really handed the tactical decision making back to the helmsman a little bit more all round the race
10:50course, I suppose, because you don't have a chance to as a crew to look around down when you're looking
10:56too closely at that spinnaker laugh.
10:58I'm assuming.
11:00Yeah, exactly.
11:01Exactly.
11:02So meanwhile, GBR 55 are looking like they're doing very well.
11:06Well, they had an absolutely phenomenal day on Saturday coming through to win the first race after not doing so
11:16well in on the first lap, but having a fantastic second beat and then more or less leading the second
11:23race of their session start to finish.
11:26And and they moved up to overall leaders of the competition, having started the day in 12th.
11:32So certainly ones to watch out for Martin Wrigley and Bettine Harris.
11:39But now we're looking at Japan 22 also going very well here on home waters.
11:44Tetsuya Isozaki and Yuri Zeki looking very solid there.
11:49We're wearing those blue bibs.
11:53And certainly up in the top three or fighting certainly very well.
12:00I'm close to the top three.
12:02They're doing really well in this competition, aren't they?
12:05Yeah, exactly.
12:06I think they they know these waters probably better than anyone else.
12:12They they train here whenever they are home.
12:16This is their training spot.
12:18So so they feel good.
12:20They feel comfortable here.
12:22And and they I spoke to them.
12:26I mean, I speak to them quite a lot because we used to be training partners before when I was
12:31with the Swedish team.
12:31So they they picked this event and this is the key event for them.
12:36So I'm not surprised they are doing well.
12:38Getting close up towards the first windward mark and Japan 4723 looking like they might be leading the way around
12:48the first mark.
12:49So Japanese going extremely well here in the early stages of this race.
12:54This is the fourth race of the gold fleet finals here for the 470 World Championships in Enoshima.
13:01And I'm Andy Rice commentating with Rio Olympic gold medalist from 10 years ago, Iho Maronic, who represented Croatia.
13:12And Iho will understand the patterns of play better than anybody as as we see Japan 4723 coming towards the
13:20top mark.
13:20This is Sho Kaminoki and Amani Nagai from team Jose with a really commanding lead as they go round the
13:29windward mark and get ready to hoist that Jenica straight into a jibe set.
13:35That's an unusual move, Iho.
13:37We don't normally see the jibe set.
13:38Why do you think they've gone for that?
13:41They went for that for sure because there was a bit of a righty up the top.
13:47Also, I think if I'm not mistaken by the tracker, I think Swedish team had some nice, nice comeback in
13:56the middle of the of the upwind from the right side.
13:58So they believe there is a bit more pressure there.
14:02So they go for it.
14:05Also from the tracker seems like geometry of the course is a bit screwed now.
14:10So it's a long to sail on port down to the bottom gate.
14:14So I think I think I would probably do the same in their position.
14:18OK, well, it is an unusual decision, but it does suggest that the wind has shifted round since the race
14:25course was set for start time.
14:27And by 470 standards, that's a pretty significant lead.
14:31Now, the question for these Japanese sailors Shokamanoki and Amani Nogai is can they keep GBR 55 behind them?
14:41Because as I was saying a few minutes ago, GBR 55, they really had a fantastic day yesterday.
14:47They managed to win two races in very different conditions and that moved them to the top of the overall
14:55leaderboard.
14:55So now they've got the Japanese have Martin Wrigley and Bettine Harris, who are setting the pace here in Enoshima.
15:04They're chasing them down in second place and the kinetics downwind are going to be a critical part.
15:11And would it be fair to say that it was Jordi Jama and Nico Rodriguez that really showed the rest
15:18of the fleet how to get the best of kinetics downwind in 470s?
15:22Or was it not as straightforward as that, Iho?
15:28Maybe not as straightforward, but at one stage they were for sure doing it a bit better than the rest
15:33of the fleet.
15:35I mean, as I was involved as a coach, I know that there were many teams who were doing it
15:43very good.
15:44But yes, they had, if anything, a tiny bit of edge in the aggressive sailing downwind.
15:51And I think also many things tried to take a bit from their technique and apply to their own sailing.
15:59So we're seeing these very aggressive moves downwind constantly pumping the kite.
16:08But is it, am I right in saying that the Oscar flag can go up and down during the course
16:12of a racing?
16:13And if that's the case, no, tell me.
16:17No, no, that's correct.
16:1910 knots is a limit for the Oscar flag being, or more than 10 knots.
16:25Oscar flag goes up.
16:26And if it's under 10 knots, then the race committee drops the flag and the pumping is not more allowed.
16:33Lead change here, Igor.
16:35Sorry, I just wanted to interrupt.
16:37So it looks like the British have now moved into the lead.
16:41I know we haven't seen them all the way down here, but I want you to take an educated guess.
16:46What do you think has put the British in front here?
16:50I know because I spoke to the Japanese team a bit, Kaminoki and Nagai.
16:58So Nagai is quite young and she's like coming from the Japanese university sailing schools.
17:07And yeah, so I think here is a lot about experience.
17:13Martin and Bea, they sail for a lot of time together and they work very, very good together.
17:22And I'm not surprised that they managed to outrun the relatively younger Japanese team.
17:30Yeah, and what is the key to this technique?
17:34Because it's not just throwing the boat around randomly.
17:36I'm sure it's about getting the timing on the waves as well, isn't it?
17:40Yeah, absolutely, absolutely.
17:42And then it's a lot about synchronization between the two.
17:48And yeah, I think what normally happens is that the skipper decides general angle or general idea.
17:59Is it lower mode or faster mode?
18:02And then the crew does the work according to that and plays with these micro decisions on the wave and
18:09the pressures.
18:10But yeah, it's a lot about synchronization and communication in downwind.
18:14And we see the result of that, which is that is a phenomenal gain by the British ahead of the
18:20Japanese.
18:20And now there is a match race between two Japanese teams.
18:24But our former leaders are now back in third.
18:27We see our former leaders 472-3 going around in third place and immediately tacking away to clear their air
18:34because they have also been overtaken by Japan 22, who have been the form Japanese boat so far this week.
18:42Tetsuya Isosaki and Yuri Seiki, who are following the leaders GBR 55 out towards the right hand side of the
18:49course.
18:50And the gaps already are absolutely enormous.
18:53Here are the Greeks. They were very close to winning a race yesterday.
18:57They ended up finishing second behind GBR 55.
19:00But the Greek team also going extremely well this week.
19:04And then also up in the top few, Switzerland 3.
19:08They had some difficult moments yesterday, but looking a lot better in this race today.
19:13And then another British boat, GBR 9, Hannah Bristow and James Taylor currently in sixth.
19:18And surprised to see in these conditions that there is no sign of ESP 44.
19:27I would expect to see them.
19:29I see Sweden 3-4-9 in the back of picture and a couple of German teams going round in
19:36reasonable positions.
19:38But our silver medalists from the world's last year, Simon Dietsch and Anna Markfort, were yet to see them.
19:44I would have expected to see a little bit better from Dietsch and Markfort in these conditions.
19:50What do you think, Igor?
19:53Yeah, I agree.
19:54I agree.
19:55The German duo that you mentioned, they are quite known for their performance in stronger wind or medium to strong.
20:06So, yeah, I'm a bit surprised.
20:07But as I said earlier, it's very, very challenging conditions here in Hiroshima.
20:12And, you know, it's hard to read the wind.
20:15And then, if I'm not mistaken, I think they started by the pin.
20:21And this maybe have limited their options, you know, with the first up and leg.
20:27Right, yeah.
20:28So, if you start near the pin and then the wind shifts, but you're not able to tack and cross,
20:33you've lost your opportunity to take advantage of the first wind shift.
20:38Meanwhile, we're back with the leaders.
20:40We're looking at Martin Wrigley and Bertine Harris wearing the yellow bibs.
20:45and further stretching their advantage in this 470 World Championship in Enoshima, Japan.
20:51Because they are being chased by two local boats, Japan 4723 and Japan 2022.
21:00But this is a really commanding lead by the British GBR 55 right now,
21:06who have been enjoying some really good results over the last few seasons, haven't they, Igor?
21:12No, absolutely.
21:14They, if anything, had an incredible season.
21:19Actually, they, if I'm not mistaken, they have been, like, worst position second at Palma
21:28and in the air behind the Spanish duo of Jordi and Marta.
21:33But they have won Europeans.
21:35They have won the World Cup or Sailing Grand Slam event in Los Angeles.
21:40So they are very, very sharp this year.
21:47Unbelievably sharp, just incredible.
21:49Here we are with China 7.
21:51Occasionally, we're getting on-board shots of China 7.
21:54And behind Korea 6, we just get a glimpse of ESP 44,
21:57our defending world champions who are struggling in this race right now.
22:04Portugal 25, also a little bit further back in the race
22:09because there's no sign of them in the top 10 scoreboard at the top left of your screen.
22:14And you'll see that GBR 55, top left of screen, is leading on the leaderboard
22:20and you can see them leading here in the live images on the drone
22:24and extremely hard work going in there by Bettine Harris.
22:28Why do you think there are these moments where she's putting in a lot of work
22:32and then having a rest?
22:34Is it a rest because she's specifically getting tired or what is it, Igor?
22:40Maybe, but maybe it's also a bit flatter part of the sea where,
22:44where, you know, boat is going already well.
22:46So you don't need to push the boat through the, through the waves
22:49or you don't need to change the modes like to, to go lower and faster.
22:54So, yeah, I think they are sailing like that or changing the technique
23:00because as we all know, unfortunately it's not predictable sailing,
23:04you know, so, so the sets of waves change,
23:08a path, a lull, changes everything as well.
23:10So it's very dynamic and I think they, they do change the mode
23:15because it's so changeable, everything.
23:16and I, yeah, as we all see, they do it very, very well, extremely well.
23:23We saw ESP-44 in that last image, still fighting their way in mid fleet,
23:28trying to make as many gains as they can
23:31and it will be much harder work for them back in the mid pack
23:35than it is for GBR-55 right now, who look like they're cruising
23:40and have got Japan-4723 pretty much squared away to leeward of them.
23:46And then further along, Japan-22.
23:50But it looked like after being forced to tack away at the leeward mark,
23:55that going out to the left-hand side, even if they didn't want to do that,
24:01has actually put Japan-4723 back ahead of Japan-22.
24:05Would you agree with that, Igor?
24:06It looks like it did them a favour having to tack away to get clear air.
24:11Yeah, yeah, no, I agree.
24:13As I said, I think it's very challenging to put yourself in the right position
24:20and maybe now the teams are also in a bit of like fleet management mode,
24:26especially Japan-22 that are in the medal contention.
24:31So maybe they look a bit more into big picture and getting the good score,
24:37but maybe they don't care about this particular one team
24:42and they go for the majority of the fleet.
24:44Another brief glimpse of ESP-44 fighting their way through the pack in this race.
24:51And now the digital images.
24:53Good to see that ocean swell on the Pacific also represented in digital form.
24:58And how does that affect the game, having this big rolling Pacific swell here as well?
25:04Does that change the way that you sail the boat much, Igor?
25:08Yeah, it does. It's a bit different and especially for teams who are not used to it, it can be
25:16very challenging.
25:17So, yeah, you need some time to adapt to it.
25:21I'm coming up to the windward mark for the second time.
25:25This is looking very good for the British, looking absolutely commanding.
25:32And this time it's a straight set, no drive set this time.
25:38And not the best of sets actually there, Igor.
25:41I don't think they give themselves a 10 out of 10 for that, would they?
25:46No, for sure not. But also they have such a handy lead that maybe they can give themselves a tiny
25:53bit of, you know, relax, whatever.
25:58But no, the set itself was not great, but they are straight into it.
26:04They work hard.
26:05And, yeah, I think the plan for downwind is quite similar because of the geometry you want to sail on
26:12that port early.
26:13So I think they went a bit on starboard just to create a bit more separation and now they jibe.
26:20So I think they are sailing this regatta very, very good, like very, very smart.
26:27Yeah, so they still, that's sort of a good defensive move doing that 100, 200 meters on starboard before jibe,
26:38I suppose.
26:39It puts them in a good position to cover the moves of the chasing pack.
26:43Is that your thinking?
26:45Yeah, exactly, yeah. That's what I meant, yeah.
26:47Yeah. So we got the, the rest of the top 10 going round here, the Japanese second and third, Italy
26:53went round in fourth, Spain 18 round in fifth, GBR 9 round in sixth.
26:59We're looking at Japan 4839 who are going round in ninth place and we're back looking at that massive lead
27:06by GBR 55.
27:08And small gusts of breeze that we have the privilege to see from the drone shot, don't we?
27:14Oh, very close rounding there for Spain 44.
27:17It looks like they just about got away with it ahead of two German boats, but a game of fine
27:22margins.
27:23And it's going to be a struggle for Anton Dahlberg and Levis and Lindner to, to get around.
27:28Looks like they've just about got around without hitting the mark, but problems for China seven.
27:33Are they going to be able to complete their tack in time?
27:36Not the best double tack, but I think they might have got away with it.
27:40And there's one of the Portuguese boats.
27:42I think that was Beatrice Gargo just going around there with Rodolfo Pires.
27:49Some really good scores by Portugal in yesterday's racing by two different Portuguese teams.
27:55But look how difficult it is in the middle of the pack.
27:57It's so much harder than winning these races.
28:00So GBR 55 can do exactly what they want.
28:04Everybody else here in the mid pack is completely compromised.
28:08You've got to stay out of other people's way.
28:10I'm not sure what was going on with Portugal 21 there.
28:13Do you want to have a guess at that?
28:15Or no, let's, let's just look at the, this is the onboard with China seven.
28:20Um, and they, I think we're going to have to see them do a double tack.
28:25Yeah.
28:25Okay.
28:25Yeah.
28:26So that, this is a replay of their double tack, which was not particularly well executed.
28:32That, that was not intentional, but unfortunately Skipper lost, lost the tiller there and lost
28:39the control of the boat, but they actually saved it quite well.
28:42They, they lost a couple of meters and, and a boat that went, uh, into the world of them,
28:47but yeah, they, they, they escaped the bigger, bigger disaster.
28:52No disasters for GBR 55 already wearing the yellow bibs and leading the competition overall
28:59after four days.
29:01And now on day five, they are setting the pace as the rest of the pack comes down behind
29:06in what looks like building breeze.
29:08It looks like breeze is getting stronger behind and Japan 22 looking a little bit faster than
29:13the leaders that we're seeing here.
29:15do you think, but it's not, it's not going to be enough.
29:17Yeah, exactly.
29:20Uh, for the moment it looks like a breeze is picking up.
29:23Uh, the forecast is to, to, uh, dropping breeze though, but, uh, I hope it, it, uh, stays like
29:28this so we can have, uh, three nice races and GBR nine has closed quite close up on Japan
29:35four, seven, two, three, who, if you remember were leading around the first win with marker
29:40this race, but they, the lack of experience is showing and Japan four, seven, two, three,
29:45three, having a great race, but being overtaken by some of the more experienced teams and GBR
29:53nine working really hard, uh, to try and get past the Japanese boat.
29:59And it will be interesting to see who comes out ahead there.
30:03Japan 22 safely onto the final reach towards the finish and Japan four, seven, two, three
30:12has managed to defend third place from the hard chasing GBR nine team.
30:17So GBR nine are looking solid for fourth.
30:20I don't think they're going to drop back any further, but they're not going to gain.
30:23and Greece 70 who were doing so well yesterday.
30:27Also having a really good day today.
30:31A fifth place looking in line for Greece 70.
30:35And Afrodita Zegas, one of the most experienced sailors in the fleet,
30:41sailing with George Cabas representing Olympiacos.
30:46Yeah.
30:47That's actually a new, new pairing, Andy.
30:49They, they started some months ago and, uh, here they are showing, um, uh, like amazing level.
30:55Um, so very, very happy to see them in front also in this race.
30:59Let's see if, let's see if they can make it to the, to the medal race.
31:02I think would be super nice to see them in, to, in tomorrow's races.
31:05Well, that, that new pairing, obviously finding good chemistry so early on, that's really impressive.
31:11As the Greeks come across the finish line in fifth place and Spain 18 coming across in sixth.
31:20And, and there is the rest of the fleet with looks like the breeze building.
31:25Um, and there we have it.
31:26There's the overall scores.
31:28Once we factor in that race win for Martin Wrigley and Bertine Harris consolidating their lead.
31:33Now with eight points ahead of Japan.
31:36So, uh, there we have it next race coming up.
