00:03386 young programmers from more than 97 countries gathered in Tashkent for this
00:08year's International Olympiad in informatics. They were solving complex algorithmic problem,
00:13working out the solution before writing the code. But AI is changing both programming and
00:19the competitions designed to test their skills. AI is changing a lot the way we organize contests
00:25because we need to take into account that students have it. For competitors, AI could
00:33mean less time coding and more time solving the problem itself. During the five-hour contest,
00:39we were spending more than two hours on writing the code. But with the help of AI, we can
00:45spend more of our time on thinking or solving the problem itself. But code is only part of the task.
00:53I guess, of course, you need to know some algorithms, but you also need a lot of intuition
01:01on knowing which one to use when. The implications extend to education. Uzbekistan's national AI
01:07strategy is built around skills, infrastructure and implementation. One is, of course, preparing
01:14talent and preparing people for being ready for the AI changes in the world and in Uzbekistan as well.
01:20For educators, the emphasis is on computational thinking.
01:24They should give them training in what we call computational thinking,
01:28right, so that they can know how to actually formulate the problem, the real-life problem,
01:33into a computational way of model. Artificial intelligence is already changing the way programmers
01:40learn and work. First generation gathered here, adapting to the technology will be part of shaping
01:46what programming becomes next.
