00:02Getting back on his feet has been an arduous journey for Ben Murphy.
00:07The 33 year old suffered two strokes in the span of five years.
00:13After the second one, my life isn't really the same again.
00:19He spent months in hospital learning how to walk and talk again.
00:24Because I was quite young, I was 27 when I had the first one.
00:27They didn't know what it was.
00:30Ashley DeCotta was 35 when she had a stroke.
00:34I think it took them maybe 12 hours to figure out I actually had a stroke, yeah.
00:40When young people are coming into emergency departments their strokes are being missed
00:43because often health professionals are not thinking about stroke in that younger age group.
00:48Experts warn the rate of stroke in young people is increasing,
00:52with one in four occurring in those under the age of 65.
00:55They're investigating whether lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise
00:59are partially behind the rise.
01:01So what I would encourage everybody to do is go to their health practitioner,
01:06their GP, get a health check, know what your numbers are,
01:08know what your blood pressure is, know whether you've got a high cholesterol
01:11or you're at risk of diabetes or have diabetes.
01:14And advocates are also calling for more tailored rehab services.
01:17Our health system isn't particularly catered towards the needs of these younger stroke survivors.
01:25Taking back control, one day at a time.
01:28taking back control, one day at a time.
01:28Before I continue on, I've been following.
01:29The Dubupper, one day at the time.
01:29I put it on my website at the time.
01:29And my website for the website,
01:29I take it on my website.
01:29You also see that the new website,
01:30You see?
