Advocates are urging people to be aware of the signs of stroke, with rates of the condition on the rise in younger Australians. The National Stroke Foundation is reminding both the public and healthcare workers that stroke doesn't discriminate.

00:02Getting back on his feet has been an arduous journey for Ben Murphy.
00:07The 33 year old suffered two strokes in the span of five years.
00:13After the second one, my life isn't really the same again.
00:19He spent months in hospital learning how to walk and talk again.
00:24Because I was quite young, I was 27 when I had the first one.
00:27They didn't know what it was.
00:30Ashley DeCotta was 35 when she had a stroke.
00:34I think it took them maybe 12 hours to figure out I actually had a stroke, yeah.
00:40When young people are coming into emergency departments their strokes are being missed
00:43because often health professionals are not thinking about stroke in that younger age group.
00:48Experts warn the rate of stroke in young people is increasing,
00:52with one in four occurring in those under the age of 65.
00:55They're investigating whether lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise
00:59are partially behind the rise.
01:01So what I would encourage everybody to do is go to their health practitioner,
01:06their GP, get a health check, know what your numbers are,
01:08know what your blood pressure is, know whether you've got a high cholesterol
01:11or you're at risk of diabetes or have diabetes.
01:14And advocates are also calling for more tailored rehab services.
01:17Our health system isn't particularly catered towards the needs of these younger stroke survivors.
