00:03In this lesson, we will learn the complete Hanafi method of Islamic funeral rites,
00:08beginning from the time of death until burial and the supplications afterward.
00:12Let us begin.
00:14Immediately after death, when a Muslim passes away, the following should be done.
00:20The following should recite,
00:22إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ
00:25Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return.
00:31Gently close the eyes of the deceased.
00:33If the mouth is open, tie the jaw with a soft cloth so that it remains closed.
00:39Straighten the arms and legs.
00:41Make dua for the forgiveness of the deceased.
00:44Arrange the funeral washing, shrouding, funeral prayer, and burial.
00:49As soon as reasonably possible.
00:51Washing the deceased.
00:53Who should perform the ghusl?
00:55A male should be washed by males.
00:58A female should be washed by females.
01:01According to the Hanafi school, a husband may wash his deceased wife.
01:06But a wife should not wash her deceased husband.
01:10Prepare the following.
01:11Clean water, sidr or soap,
01:15camphor for the final wash,
01:17towels, and the shroud.
01:20Method of ghusl.
01:21Step 1. Maintain privacy.
01:23Place the deceased in a private area.
01:26The aura should remain covered throughout the washing.
01:30Step 2. Clean any impurities.
01:32Using gloves or a cloth, clean any impurities from the body.
01:35Step 3. Perform wudu.
01:37Perform wudu for the deceased in the normal order.
01:40Wash the face.
01:42Wash both arms up to the elbows.
01:45Wipe the head.
01:47Wash both feet.
01:50Note.
01:51Water should not be poured into the mouth or nostrils.
01:55Instead, they should be cleaned gently with a damp cloth or cotton.
02:00Step 4. Wash the hair.
02:02Wash the head and beard thoroughly.
02:04Step 5. Wash the entire body.
02:07Wash first the right side and then the left side.
02:10Then the entire body.
02:11The sunnah is to wash the body three times.
02:14If necessary, it may be washed five or seven times.
02:17It is recommended that the final wash contains camphor.
02:20Step 6. Dry the body.
02:22Dry the body gently with a towel.
02:24Step 7. Apply fragrance.
02:25For a male, apply perfume to the places of prostration.
02:30Forehead, nose, palms, knees, feet.

02:36A male is shrouded in three white cloths.

02:41Izar.
02:42Lower wrap.
02:43Kamees.

02:44Order.
02:44Spread the lifafa.
02:46Place the izar on top.
02:48Place the kamees on top.
02:50Dress the deceased in the kamees.
02:52Wrap the izar.
02:53Finally, wrap the lifafa.
02:55Tie light knots at the head, waist, and feet to keep the shroud secure.
03:00For a female.
03:01A female is shrouded in five cloths.
03:03Lifafa.
03:04Outer sheet.
03:05Izar.
03:05Kamees.
03:06Head covering.
03:07Khimar.
03:08Chest cloth.
03:09Cinnaband.
03:10After shrouding, place the deceased on the funeral bier.
03:14The body should be positioned facing the qibla.
03:17Carry the funeral with dignity and respect.
03:20According to the sunnah, those carrying the bier should try to shoulder all four corners in turn.
03:26Front right, rear right.
03:28Front left, rear left.
03:30Avoid unnecessary conversation while accompanying the funeral.
03:35Remain engaged in remembrance of Allah and silent reflection.
03:38The funeral prayer Salat al-janazah.
03:41Formation.
03:41The imam stands at the front.
03:43For a male deceased, the imam stands near the head.
03:46For a female deceased, the imam stands near the middle of the body.
03:49Intention.
03:50Niyya.
03:51Make the intention in your heart.
03:53I intend to perform the funeral prayer for this deceased person, for the sake of Allah, following the imam.
03:58There is no need to verbalize the intention.
04:01The imam says, Allahu Akbar.
04:03The congregation, raise the hands only.
04:06Fold the hands below the navel.
04:10Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika tabarak asmuka, wa ta'ala jadduka wa jalla thanauka, wa la ilaha ghayruk.
04:18Second takbir.
04:19The imam says, Allahu Akbar.
04:23Do not raise the hands.
04:25Recite durood Ibrahim.
04:27Third takbir.
04:28The imam says, Allahu Akbar.
04:32Do not raise the hands.
04:33Then recite the supplication for the deceased.
04:37Allahumma ghafir li hayyina wa mayyitina wa shahidina wa ghaibina wa sagheerina wa kabheerina wa dakharina wa unthana.
04:45Allahumma man ahyaytahu ihi ala al-islam.
04:48Wa man tawafaytahu minna.
04:52Fatawafahu ala al-imam.
04:54Fourth takbir.
04:55The imam says, Allahu Akbar.
04:58Remain silent briefly.
05:00Salam.
05:01As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah.
05:04As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah.
05:08Burial.
05:08Lower the deceased gently into the grave.
05:11Recite.
05:12Bismillah wa ala millati rasulillah.
05:14Lay the deceased on the right side facing the qibla.
05:18If the grave has a lahd, seal it with bricks or wooden planks before filling the grave.
05:24Each person may place three handfuls of soil into the grave.
05:28First handful.
05:30Minha khalaqnakum.
05:31Second handful.
05:32Wa fiha nu'idukum.
05:34Third handful.
05:35Wa minha nukhrijukum taratan ukhra.
05:37Afterward, the grave should be completely filled and raised approximately one hand span above ground level.
05:43Remain at the grave for a short while.
05:46Make dua for the deceased.
05:49A recommended supplication is,
05:52Allahum maghfir lahu warhamhu wa'afihi wa'afu anhu wa thabbithu inda su'al.
06:00Important Hanafi rulings.
06:01It is preferable for the person performing the ghusl to be in a state of wudu,
06:05though it is not obligatory.
06:07Hands are raised only during the first takbir in Salat al-Janaza.
06:10There is no ruku'ah, tashahud, in the funeral prayer.
06:14If someone misses some takbirs,
06:16they should complete them after the imam finishes with salam.
06:20Unnecessary delay in the funeral and burial is considered makrooh.
06:24Making dua, seeking forgiveness,
06:26and giving charity on behalf of the deceased are all recommended acts.
