Jesus tells a simple story about a farmer scattering seed — the kind of teaching a child could follow. Then his own disciples ask him why he bothers with parables at all, and his answer isn't what you'd expect. He says he speaks this way *because* some people, seeing, will not perceive, and hearing, will not understand. The same words that reveal something to one listener conceal it from another.

In this reflection, we look closely at Matthew 13:1-23: the Greek word behind "parable" that literally means something thrown alongside something else for comparison, the difference between merely *hearing* the word and actually *understanding* it, the Isaiah quotation read as consequence rather than exclusion, and the four soils reframed — not as fixed types of people, but as postures of the heart most of us live in at different seasons, sometimes in the same week.
