A shepherd has a hundred sheep. He loses one. And instead of playing it safe, he leaves the other ninety-nine completely unguarded and goes after the single animal that wandered off — a trade no reasonable shepherd would make.
In this reflection on Luke 15:1-7, we look at the parable Jesus tells in direct response to religious leaders offended that he eats with sinners: the Greek word behind "lost" that means something closer to destroyed than misplaced, the communal First-Century shepherding culture where losing a sheep was a traceable public failure, the detail that the shepherd carries the sheep home rather than driving it, and the Old Testament promise in Ezekiel 34 that God himself would search for the lost when human shepherds failed.
