00:04The landscapes and rock formations we see in the world
00:07are the result of immense forces that continuously and gradually change over time.
00:13Because our lives are so short, we do not witness these changes in their full extent and beauty.
00:20But there are places where we can see a small part of this immense force at work.
00:25And now we will look at some of the most dangerous volcanoes on the planet.

00:39Number 15. Kilauea Volcano
00:43Kilauea is a shield volcano located in Hawaii, United States.
00:47This is one of the most active volcanoes in Oceania, and also one of the most active in the world.
00:53It has a height of approximately 1,247 meters, and was formed due to a hot spot beneath the Pacific
01:00plate.
01:01Because of this, it almost continuously erupts lava.
01:04This is the youngest volcano on the island of Hawaii, and one of the five volcanoes that make up the
01:09big island of Hawaii.
01:10Kilauea is extremely dangerous because of its very high activity.
01:16In fact, the new lava fields it has formed can be seen from space.
01:20Despite its continuous activity, the power of the volcano is often underestimated.
01:26Because of this, houses and infrastructure have been built in nearby areas,
01:30but were eventually consumed by lava, as its eruptions are usually slow and continuous.
01:36But if a major explosive eruption occurs, hundreds of thousands of people living on the island of Hawaii
01:43could be put in extreme danger.
01:46Number 14. Fagradalsfjall Volcano
01:51Fagradalsfjall is a fissure volcano located in the southwestern part of Iceland.
01:56Its name in Icelandic means,
01:58Mountain of the Valley of Fire, referring to its lava fields.
02:03It has a height of approximately 385 meters and was formed due to the ongoing separation
02:09of the North American plate and the Eurasian plate, which divides Iceland into two parts.
02:14For many years, it was not considered a major threat because it remained inactive for about 800 years.
02:22But in 2021, strong seismic activity began, followed by repeated and continuous volcanic eruptions.
02:31Although its eruptions are slow, it remains a danger because of the poisonous gases it can release.
02:37This is even more concerning because the volcano is located in an area close to Iceland's capital, Reykjavik.
02:44Some parts of the area are only about 30 kilometers from the volcano,
02:48so hundreds of thousands of people could be affected.
02:5313. Calbuco Volcano
02:56Calbuco is a stratovolcano located in the south-central part of Chile.
03:00It has a height of about 2,006 meters and is surrounded by large lakes,
03:06which is why it is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in Chile.
03:10Like many volcanoes in Chile, it was formed due to the subduction of the South American plate and the Nazca
03:16plate,
03:17which is also the process that helped form the Andes Mountains.
03:20Although it is not as active as Villarica Volcano, it can still be more dangerous
03:25because there are more communities located around it.
03:29This includes Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas, which together have approximately 300,000 residents.
03:36In 2015, the volcano erupted again.
03:39It spewed a massive column of smoke and ash that reached a height of 15 kilometers.
03:45Because of this, the authorities implemented a red alert and curfew in the nearby areas.
03:49Number 12. Niragongo Volcano
03:52Niragongo is a stratovolcano located in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
03:59It is known for having one of the largest and longest-lasting lava lakes in the world,
04:05making it one of the most dangerous volcanoes on the planet.
04:09It has a height of approximately 3,470 meters and was formed due to the separation of the Somali plate
04:16and the African plate.
04:17This is also the process that led to the formation of the Great Lakes region of Africa.
04:22Without a doubt, it is one of the most well-known volcanoes on the entire African continent.
04:26Because of the explosive eruptions that occur here from time to time,
04:31it creates huge columns of smoke containing poisonous gas and ash that can reach several kilometers high.
04:38The volcano is located just about 12 kilometers from the cities of Goma and Gisenyi.
04:45It has destroyed nearby communities several times.
04:48And until now, it continues to pose a threat to more than 800,000 people.
04:53Number 11. Sakurajima Volcano
04:57Sakurajima is a stratovolcano located in Kagoshima Bay, Japan.
05:02It has a height of approximately 1,117 meters and is known for its very high activity.
05:09Its activity is the result of the continuous movement and collision of tectonic plates in the region.
05:15In fact, Sakurajima is one of the most active volcanoes in Japan and also one of the most active in
05:22the world.
05:22Previously, Sakurajima was a separate island in Kagoshima Bay.
05:27But in 1914, a massive eruption occurred that connected it to Kyushu Island.
05:34Sakurajima continues to be active, including fumaroles that release gas and ash.

06:17It has a height of approximately 3,762 meters and is considered one of the most active volcanoes in Guatemala
06:25and Central America.
06:27Its high activity is related to its location between the North American Plate, the Cocos Plate, and the Caribbean Plate.
06:34The movement of these plates is one of the reasons why there are so many volcanoes found in Central America.
06:40Fuego is known for its violent eruptions, and there are records of its activity dating back to the time of
06:46the Spanish conquest of the Americas.
06:48In its history, it has experienced explosive eruptions that caused pyroclastic flows, lahars, and ash fall that affected nearby communities.
06:59In the areas surrounding the volcano, it is estimated that around 940,000 people could be affected.
07:05Because of the frequency and intensity of its eruptions, it remains a serious threat to the communities around it.
07:13Number 9. Teide Volcano
07:16Teide is a stratovolcano located on the island of Tenerife, Spain, and it is often described as a sleeping giant.
07:25It stands at 3,718 meters, making it the highest mountain in Spain and one of the highest peaks in
07:32the Atlantic Islands.
07:33If measured from its base on the ocean floor to its summit, Teide is considered one of the largest volcanoes
07:41in the world.
07:42Teide was formed due to the activity of a hotspot and the complex movement of tectonic plates in the region.
07:49It is still considered an active volcano even though Teide's last major eruption occurred in 1909.
07:56In recent years, fumarole activity and some seismic activity have been recorded, showing that the giant volcano is not completely
08:05dormant.
08:06The island of Tenerife is one of the most densely populated islands in the region, with over 950,000 residents
08:13in a territory smaller than Luxembourg.
08:16So if a strong and violent eruption occurs, the impact on the communities on the island could be enormous.
08:21Number 8. Nevado del Ruiz Volcano
08:25Nevado del Ruiz is a snow-capped mountain and a stratovolcano located between the departments of Tolima and Caldas in
08:34Colombia.
08:35It has a height of approximately 5,321 meters and is known for the glaciers that cover its summit.
08:42The volcano was formed due to the collision of tectonic plates in the region, which also led to the formation
08:47of the Colombian Andes.
08:49It is located about 130 kilometers from Bogota and near cities such as Manizales, Pereira, Armenia, Libano, and Ibagué.
09:00Historically, it has experienced several powerful eruptions that caused large flows of ash, mud, and other volcanic debris.
09:08But its most well-known eruption happened in 1985.
09:12In that eruption, it is estimated that the volcano released more than 35 million tons of magma and gas.
09:19Because of the heat from the eruption, a large part of the glaciers on the mountain melted, causing massive lahars,
09:26or rushing mud and water, to flow down into the communities.
09:29The lahars carried an enormous amount of mud and debris, destroying homes and other infrastructure, and resulting in the deaths
09:37of approximately 23,000 people, most of them in the city of Armero.

09:517. Krakatoa Volcano
09:54Krakatoa is a caldera volcano located in the Sunda Strait, between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia.
10:01It is known for its extremely powerful eruption, that occurred in 1983, and caused the...
10:12The eruption was so powerful that it almost completely destroyed the former island of Krakatoa, leaving behind a small archipelago.
10:19And from the remnants of the volcano, eventually a new volcano formed in the area called Anak Krakatoa, or Child
10:27of Krakatoa.
10:28The high activity in this region is related to the collision of the Sunda Plate and the Australian Plate.
10:35Since its historic eruption, the volcano has remained active, and its shape continues to change, due to the materials it
10:43releases.
10:44You can also see fumaroles here, that continuously emit volcanic gases.
10:49If another powerful eruption occurs, it could affect the nearby coastal cities.
10:56Because there are many densely populated areas near the volcano, more than 1.1 million people could be put at

11:04Number 6. Cotopaxi Volcano
11:07Cotopaxi is a stratovolcano located in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador.
11:12It is known as one of the highest volcanoes of its kind in the world, with a height of approximately
11:175,877 meters.
11:20It has an almost perfectly conical summit covered with a glacier, attracting thousands of tourists and mountaineers every year.
11:28The activity of Cotopaxi is related to the collision of tectonic plates in the region, including the Nazca Plate and
11:35the South American Plate.
11:37It is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in Ecuador, and also one of the most well-known active
11:43volcanoes in the world.
11:44One of its largest eruptions occurred in 1906, when it emitted a huge column of ash that reached the stratosphere.
11:52There were also large flows of volcanic mud, or lahar, that reached nearby communities.
11:58Because of its potential for explosive eruptions and large lahars, Cotopaxi remains a serious threat to the communities around it.
12:07It is located about 40 kilometers from Quito, so many cities and communities could be affected in the event of
12:14a major eruption.
12:15In total, it is estimated that more than 2 million people could be put at risk.
12:21Number 5. Mount Merapi
12:23Mount Merapi is a stratovolcano located on the island of Java, Indonesia.
12:28It is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, a country known for its large number of active volcanoes.
12:34Its high activity is caused by the subduction between the Sunda Plate and the Australian Plate.
12:40It stands at approximately 2,911 meters tall, and has been erupting repeatedly for centuries.
12:47It is located in Java, which is one of the most populous islands in the world.
12:52Based on recorded history, the volcano has experienced more than 70 major eruptions that have repeatedly caused massive devastation.
13:01Its eruptions can be explosive, releasing pyroclastic flows and fast-moving avalanches of hot gas, ash, rocks, and other volcanic
13:13material.
13:14Because of how fast they move, these can be extremely dangerous to the surrounding communities.
13:20Merapi is continuously being monitored because there are many towns and large cities located nearby.
13:26This includes Yogyakarta, Surakarta, and Magalang, with a combined population of approximately 2.2 million people in areas that could
13:36be affected.
13:37Number 4. Mount Vesuvius
13:40Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano located in the Bay of Naples, Italy.
13:45It has a height of approximately 1,281 meters.
13:50The volcano was formed due to the collision of the Eurasian Plate and the African Plate, a process that causes
13:57intense volcanic activity in some parts of Italy.
14:01Vesuvius is known for the destruction of the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD.
14:09Although more than 2,000 years have passed since that tragedy, the volcano remains active.
14:16At present, it is in a state of relative inactivity, but in geology, 2,000 years is a very short
14:24period of time.
14:25That does not mean the danger is completely gone.
14:28It can erupt again and possibly have a powerful explosion that could cause pyroclastic flows, heavy ashfall, and other dangerous
14:38volcanic materials.
14:39Despite this, the area around the volcano remains densely populated.
14:44This includes Naples and nearby communities with a combined population of over 3 million people.
14:51Number 3. Mount Rainier
14:53Mount Rainier is a stratovolcano located in the northwestern part of the United States.
14:59It has a height of approximately 4,400 meters, and its massive elevation is remarkable compared to the surrounding areas.
15:08Like many volcanoes in this region, Rainier was formed due to the movement and collision of tectonic plates, including the
15:16North American Plate and the Juan de Fuca Plate.
15:19Although its current activity is low, Rainier is still considered an active volcano.
15:25Its last major eruption occurred in the 19th century.
15:29Nevertheless, scientists consider it a high-risk volcano.
15:33The main reason is the vast amount of glacial ice and snow covering the mountain.
15:38If an eruption occurs, a large portion of the ice could melt and cause massive lahars that may rush toward
15:47the communities below.
15:48The volcano is located approximately 80 kilometers from Seattle.
15:52Because of this, it is estimated that more than 5.5 million people could be at risk if a major
16:00eruption occurs.
16:01Number 2. Tall Volcano
16:03Tall Volcano is a caldera stratovolcano located on the island of Luzon, Philippines.
16:10It is one of the most active volcanoes in the country.
16:13Although it is not very tall, with an elevation of about 200 meters, it has a huge potential to cause
16:20damage.
16:21Tall was formed due to the intense activity of tectonic plates in the region, including the Philippine Sea Plate and
16:28the Eurasian Plate.
16:29The current lake is inside a large caldera that was formed from ancient, massive eruptions.
16:36Over time, these eruptions changed the shape and structure of the volcano until it became what we see today.
16:43Tall has remained active and has caused major disasters several times in history.
16:48Being surrounded by water does not mean it is safe.
16:53In fact, water can interact with magma and cause even stronger and more explosive eruptions.
16:59Tall is located about 40 kilometers from Metro Manila, and many cities and communities surround it.
17:07Because of this, a powerful eruption could put more than 15 million people at risk.

17:18Popocatepadol is a stratovolcano located in Mexico, between the states of Puebla and the state of Mexico.

17:32Like many volcanoes in Mexico, Popocatepadol was formed in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt,

17:40The volcano was formed due to the movement and subduction of tectonic plates,
17:45including the North American Plate, Cocos Plate, Rivera Plate, and Pacific Plate.
17:51Popocatepadol is extremely dangerous because of the many communities surrounding it.
17:55This includes Mexico City and the capital of the state of Puebla.
18:00So millions of people could be affected in the event of a major eruption.
18:04Popocatepadol has high activity, and it often emits smoke, gas, and ash.
