00:00ДИНАМИЧНАЯ МУЗЫКА
00:30They all complement each other really well.
00:33Then when you throw Schultz in the mix, it's been really fun to watch them work this training camp.
00:37But I can't wait to see Marlon Klein.
00:38You talk about a guy that can stretch the field as a tight end.
00:41This guy's been doing it in camp.
00:43And you watch him and you go, I get it.
00:46I totally get why he was a second-round pick when you see that speed.
00:49Chargers won the toss.
00:51They have elected to receive.
00:53Kicking off for the Houston Texans tonight will be Chris Freeman.
00:58Chris Freeman signed this week.
01:00Kaimi Fairbairn will be the kicker as the season opens a few weeks from now.
01:06But Chris Freeman getting an opportunity not only to show his wares, he was in minicamp with Houston,
01:10but to give Kaimi Fairbairn a little bit of a breather in the preseason.
01:13I thought it was interesting.
01:14Coach D'Amico Ryan said he's still learning how to work with kickers, and that's why he's letting them rest.
01:18So we get our first look at the newest Texan, Chris Freeman.
01:23And our first-half kickoff is brought to you by TickPick, the official fan experience partner of the Houston Texans.
01:30Two yards deep in the end zone of the Chargers.
01:32We'll bring it out across the 25-yard line.
01:35It's DeAndre Lambert-Smith who is down shy of the 30 at the 27.
01:42And we are ready to see Trey Lance.
01:45Expect to see Trey Lance in this first half and DJ Uyunglele in the second half for the Chargers.
01:51Gesundheit.
01:52Thank you.
01:53You did that very well.
01:55Very well.
01:55I've been working on that for a week and a half.
01:57Yeah, Uyunglele has been one out there for a while for me, so I was waiting to see.
02:01You nailed it.
02:02Absolutely nailed it.
02:03But Trey Lance, four years ago, in this building, Trey Lance was the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers.
02:09In the fourth quarter, some kid named Brock Purdy came in and showed he should be the quarterback of the
02:13Niners.
02:13So we'll see what Lance has still got.
02:15Former first-round pick, number three overall.
02:19And on first down, Lance will turn, and the handoff tripped up in the backfield.
02:23Nowhere to go.
02:24And an ankle tackle from Solomon Bird.
02:27And that's a name you're going to be hearing an awful lot.
02:30Solomon Bird getting involved already for the Texans.
02:34And he's been on the roster since 2024, going up and down between active roster and the practice squad.
02:39But you see the intensity.
02:41You see the way they play.
02:42That's just something that resonates in the entire defensive line room.
02:45Yeah, Solomon's had a really, really good training camp.
02:47You saw the violence taken on Scott Matlock, the fullback right there, meeting him at the point of attack.
02:55Second down and 11 after the one-yard loss.
02:59Toss play to the edge.
03:01Nowhere to go.
03:03Swarming Texans defense on our first flag of the preseason.
03:07After Kamani Vidal tried to get the edge and could not.
03:10And we'll see what this flag is all about.
03:12But one thing I'm noticing in the first two plays, the defensive line, they're changing the line of scrimmage.
03:16Look at where those guys are playing.
03:18They're playing on the offensive side of the line of scrimmage.
03:21But when you grab that face mask, you're going to give up some positive yards.
03:24Solomon Bird with the tackle and the face mask.
03:27Personal foul, face mask, defense, 15-yard penalty, automatic, first down.
03:33The flag on the play brought to you by Sheriff Law Firm, and it'll cost the Texans 15.
03:39Indy highlighted Caden McDonald.
03:41Defensive tackles that are in on tackles at the sidelines should tell you something.
03:46That guy is 335 pounds.
03:49He was helping Solomon Bird on that tackle on the sidelines.
03:52When you have a guy that size that takes on double teams and then gets off those blocks and sprints
03:57to the sideline,
03:58that's the swarmy behavior they were looking for.
04:00That's called pursuit to drill, John.
04:02I know you remember those from your college days.
04:04Hated those.
04:05On first down at the 41.
04:07Lance to the air for the first time.
04:09Over the middle and a sliding grab at the 44-yard line by Keiondre Lambert-Smith.
04:14It'll be a first down in Texans territory at the 44.
04:19Pickup of 16.
04:21Keiondre Lambert-Smith started five of the ten games he played for the Chargers last year.
04:30Former draft pick of Los Angeles.
04:33And now first down and ten at the 44-yard line for the Chargers.
04:40And the handoff again to Vidal.
04:43And he's down at the 39-yard line.
04:46A pickup of five on the play.
04:48And a little bit of jawing, a little extra conversation with Dylan Horton involved at the end of that play.
04:53You've got to love that.
04:54You've got to love that this early in the season.
04:56You have a little swinging going on after the whistle.
04:58Obviously, you don't want to do that in the regular season.
05:01But you'd just like to see the intensity.
05:03They're taking this preseason game very seriously.
05:05Yeah, that's been a theme in practice.
05:07There have been a lot of likes to fight guys in practice.
05:10And some of them are rookies.
05:11And they've kicked off a few.
05:12We'll see the center in a little bit.
05:13And Keelan kind of falls in that category.
05:15Wade would as well.
05:16So mixing it up with a little intensity.
05:18Knowing it gets time on the field.
05:20Motion across and the toss play to Vidal.
05:23Vidal getting a lot of work early.
05:24Stood up as he got to the corner.
05:27Outstanding play in the open field by Jalen Smith.
05:30It's so good to see him out there and healthy for the Texans.
05:33Yeah, went on IR in November.
05:35But this is what the defense of Texans love.
05:37They like these DBs that are physical.
05:39They're not afraid to hit.
05:40That is what you call a picture-perfect tackle, especially in today's game.
05:43Offensive coordinators make the littles make tackles.
05:47Well, if they do, then where are you going to run the football?
05:49It's a great job there by Marte Mapu.
05:52With his pursuit, that's for Scott Matlock to have to block him.
05:55That left J-Rock.
05:56But you've got to make the tackle.
05:57That is great textbook tackling right there.
05:59Third down and four at the 38 of Houston.
06:02Motion across from Davis.
06:04Lance to throw to the air.
06:06It's Lambert Smith again on the slant.
06:08He's got the first down near the Texans' 26-yard line.
06:12And Lance, with a strike, moves the chains.
06:14Got a great arm.
06:16That's always been one of his calling cards.
06:19He's a tremendous athlete.
06:20But make the read simple.
06:21Just run the slant on the backside.
06:23Lambert Smith, a really good athlete, getting open.
06:26Not much you can do about that.
06:27You'd like to be stickier in coverage.
06:29Have a little bit of pass rush.
06:29But that was quick.
06:30And Trey Lance can do those things.
06:32First quarter replays are brought to you by Sheriff Injury Lawyers.
06:38First and 10 at the 26.
06:39Off the play fake.
06:40Lance on the roll.
06:41Throws it short.
06:42Catch is made by Aranda Gadsden.
06:46And he's ankle-tackled after a seven-yard gain by Elijah Hussey.
06:50And this is what you don't want is your Houston, Texas defense.
06:54Now the offense, the Chargers, Trey Lance, they're getting into a rhythm.
06:57They're getting comfortable.
06:58He's making accurate passes on the run.
07:00You want to make sure you're keeping that pressure in front of him
07:02and not allowing him to have those easy throws.
07:05Yeah, that's what Trey Lance can do.
07:07I mean, these kind of throws, these aren't difficult throws.
07:09Mike McDaniel, the offensive coordinator, the Chargers,
07:11let him move the pocket a little bit.
07:13That's Trey Lance's game right there.
07:14And he's really playing into it early.
07:16Gadsden in motion on second down.
07:18Eighth play of the drive.
07:20And the give is to Vidal.
07:21And Vidal tumbling forward to the 15-yard line.
07:25And that'll be a first down for Los Angeles.
07:28I mean, one of the things that you have to do as a defender,
07:30which is, I don't know, Andy knows this.
07:32You get into training camp and you never tackle.
07:34You don't tackle anybody.
07:35It's all thud or, you know, you tag off.
07:37You're tackling for the first time.
07:39And so sometimes the defense can take a little bit to kind of get going,
07:43especially the offense.
07:43It's a nice little rhythm here for the Chargers.
07:45It'll be nice to hold them right here as they get into the red zone.
07:48Well, it's one of the things that people who argue for preseason games
07:51say you need the preseason games for things like this,
07:54for the ability to tackle.
07:55Absolutely.
07:56Have to.
07:57First and 10 at the 15-yard line.
08:00Lance looking, and it's dropped.
08:02Vidal had a couple of blockers and a little bit of a crease,
08:05but Vidal couldn't pull it in, and it'll bring up second and 10.
08:08Which is a surprise, because Kimani Vidal,
08:10last year he was on the practice squad.
08:12They brought him up when Omari on Hampton was injured,
08:15and all he does is have over 100 yards when he plays against the Dolphins.
08:18So he had a chance, and he did show what he can do during the regular season,
08:22but he was also a nice receiving back out of the backfield.
08:24That drop pass, that's not like him.
08:26Ended up being the leading rusher for the Chargers last year
08:29in a position that they're really looking at in this preseason.
08:34Second down and 10 at the 16-yard line.
08:40Four-man pressure from Houston.
08:42Lance floats it for the end zone a little too far for a diving Keiondre Lambert-Smith.
08:47Coverage out there.
08:48You saw Merriweather out there.
08:50You also saw Colin Wright,
08:52a young man who was brought up to us by literally everyone we spoke with before the game.
08:58Manville High School.
09:00He's come home.
09:00He has made a play on the ball every single day starting at OTAs.
09:04It's been unbelievable to watch him,
09:05and they just have moved him from the threes to the twos.
09:08Hey, let's give him some work with the ones.
09:10One day Derek Stingley wasn't out there, and he looked like he fit.
09:13It's not surprising that he helps force an incompletion there.
09:15He has been fantastic in camp.
09:1737, Colin Wright.
09:18Keep an eye on that guy.
09:19All right, can the Texans' defense force the Chargers into a field goal try?
09:22On third down and 10 at the 15, Lance looking, trying to escape.
09:28He's throwing on the run for the end zone in the back corner of the end zone.
09:32Catches May, but out of bounds.
09:33Aranda Gadsden couldn't keep his feet in.
09:37It's an incomplete pass, and it's fourth down.
09:39Coverage out there from Stephen Hall.
09:42And give credit to the rushers.
09:44Even though, obviously, they didn't have a sack,
09:46they were able to break through, get him on the run,
09:48and that's a tough pass to make when you're running.
09:51Good coverage there.
09:52You see that sticky plastering.
09:54You hear it all the time.
09:55When a quarterback starts to move, you hear these defensive coaches,
09:57plaster, plaster, plaster, and they're saying,
09:59hey, go find a receiver and get on him.
10:02And Stephen Hall did that, helping force the incompletion.
10:07Field goal try from Cameron Dicker.
10:0934 yards out is good.
10:11And the Chargers have to settle for three
10:14as D'Amico Ryan's defense stiffens in the red zone.
10:183-0 Los Angeles early in the first.
10:23Possible mission importance of Davis Mills last year for Houston.
10:27When C.J. Stroud went down, Davis Mills kept this thing going.
10:30Went 3-0 in those starts.
10:32He's tremendous in the second half against Jacksonville.
10:35He had a great first half against Buffalo
10:37that gave us enough buffer to be able to beat them.
10:39And then made maybe the throw of the year against Tennessee
10:41to win that game.
10:42He is as valuable a backup as we have had here in Houston.
10:45Good to see him here tonight.
10:47Hutchinson in motion.
10:49He gets the carry on the sweep.
10:51And Xavier Hutchinson down at the 33-yard line.
10:54This wide receiver room is so deep.
10:57And Xavier Hutchinson on the jet sweep picks up seven.
11:00He's your universal remote.
11:02You know, we could say Swiss Army knife,
11:04but I never think a Swiss Army knife works.
11:06Universal remote works for everything.
11:07And that's what Xavier Hutchinson does.
11:09You give him a carry.
11:10You throw it to him on the screen.
11:11He has a return.
11:12He might be a gunner.
11:13He's the kind of guy you have to have on a championship team.
11:16And he showed a little bit right there what he can do.
11:20On second and two.
11:22Justin Watson was the motion man.
11:24Nills to the air over the middle.
11:26Floats it in beautifully.
11:28What a pitch and catch.
11:29And it's Marlon Klein, the rookie tight end,
11:32on the receiving end, all the way down to the charger.
11:3536, he picks up 32.
11:37There's multiple guys you want to give credit to,
11:39and we're going to give credit to the tight end for catching.
11:41But look at the touch of that pass.
11:43To put it right over the defender.
11:44We talk about this as a game of inches.
11:46If that pass was three inches lower,
11:49it would have been an interception.
11:50Davis Mills with the great accuracy and the great touch.
11:54We have not seen a tight end do that here in Houston in a long time.
11:57Now, Dalton Schultz does a lot.
11:58We haven't seen that.
11:59That can open up a whole different Pandora's box for us, this offense.
12:03Our first and ten line this quarter is brought to you by Verizon.
12:07And then on first and ten, the first run for Noah Whittington,
12:11who's had some moments nearly every day in camp.
12:15The rookie from Oregon gets the first carry in a running back position
12:18that we're not going to see tonight.
12:20Woody Marks, we're not going to see David Montgomery or Jawar Jordan,
12:23but we are going to see young guys like Noah Whittington getting an opportunity.
12:26Yeah, it's a shame Noah didn't get drafted.
12:28Well, for him.
12:29But for the Texans, it was a gift that he was able to come here.
12:32He is compact.
12:34He is strong.
12:35He runs through tackles.
12:36I mean, his best highlight at Oregon was one in which he planted a Rutgers defensive back
12:40at the three-yard line and went for a touchdown.
12:41But he's got some juice, and he's got good vision.
12:43You saw it there.
12:44Second and five at the 31.
12:47Texans on the move, trying to answer the Chargers.
12:49Opening drive field goal over the middle,
12:51and Hutchinson is being held up across the middle by Dye.
12:55No flag down, and it'll bring up third and five.
12:58You know, it's because it was being held up, but when you look at this replay,
13:02either they were off, they were not on the same page,
13:04because that just doesn't look like a pass where the receiver and the quarterback were on the same page.
13:08And it looks like, just like you said, Cougs, it's because of the holdup by the defender.
13:12Yeah, Troy Dye got away with one, but let him play a little bit.
13:15X has got to be tougher going across his face.
13:18That's the coaching point from up in the booth.
13:21On third and five, Watson in motion.
13:27Mills from the shotgun.
13:28Chargers rush four, quick to the sideline.
13:30Watson a juggling catch, but he's going to end up short of the first down by about a yard.
13:36And we talk about that wide receiver room.
13:38When you have a guy like Justin Watson, this is a true vet.
13:42You know, he's won some Super Bowls.
13:44He's traveled through the NFL.
13:45This is a guy that the young guys should be asking, hey, what is it like to be a pro?
13:50What is it like to have this long-time, successful career?
13:53Absolutely.
13:53And he's a guy I feel like we missed at the end of last year.
13:57We needed to have a guy like Justin Watson in that playoff game against New England Patriots.
14:01And we didn't have him.
14:02He is hugely valuable in that way.
14:04Fourth and one, and behind the projected starting line, at least this moment,
14:08they will go for it.
14:09And a stoppage in play and a timeout by the Chargers.
14:14So the Chargers, before the fourth and one snap, take time with 6.43 to play in quarter number one.
14:22Not totally sure if the Chargers had 11 guys on the field at that point.
14:25I did a quick math on that.
14:27I don't know if they had a full 11 out there, but I like the fact that D'Amico Ryan's
14:33chosen to go for this.
14:34Look, he could give Chris Freeman an opportunity to kick the field.
14:38Well, that'd be great.
14:39But your short yardage offense, this is one of the things you don't get a lot of work on in
14:42training camp.
14:43Short yardage stuff.
14:44You don't do it much.
14:46So let's work on it right here.
14:47Let's see if we can't get this 36 inches and keep this drive a lot.
14:52All five of the offensive linemen that we think are going to go for it.
15:08And you know what else you're not going to do?
15:09You're not going to throw it here.
15:10You're going to tell those starters, hey, give me that push and let's get this first down.
15:13Whittington, the running back.
15:14Watson in motion.
15:15Play action.
15:16Mills will float it down the sideline and there's a flag.
15:20Trying to find the tight end again.
15:22And Kline, the flag is thrown.
15:24It'll be first down after the interference against the Chargers.
15:28That's why I'm up here.
15:30Number 22.
15:31Defense.
15:31The ball is placed at the spot on the foul.
15:33Automatic.
15:34First down.
15:35The rookie fourth rounder from Arizona, Genesis Smith.
15:38Now, had Davis had his eyes not locked in on Marlon Kline, you could see Xavier Hutchinson coming into the
15:44screen from the left side.
15:45He is wide open.
15:47Davis would have had to zip it in there.
15:49And I don't know if he had the time to be able to do that.
15:51But, again, Marlon Kline.
15:54Getting used to hearing that name.
15:56Nick Caley wanted to use the tight ends a lot in year one.
15:59But they all got hurt.
16:00And he used Alton Schultz a lot.
16:02But they need a weapon.
16:03That's a weapon that is really starting to unfold during training camp and, of course, on this first drive.
16:08So, a fresh set of downs from the 18 in the red zone as Mills goes to work.
16:13Looking for it all in the end zone.
16:15That one is picked up.
16:16But was he in bounds?
16:17Genesis Smith with the one-hand pick.
16:20But he's out of bounds.
16:21And it's second and ten.
16:23This guy is some kind of player.
16:24Genesis Smith from the Chargers.
16:26He played Arizona.
16:27He played every position in Arizona.
16:28That is a magnificent catch.
16:30Somewhere in DeAndre Hopkins where he's coaching at Georgia Tech is watching this game going,
16:34Hey, I did it at that exact same spot.
16:36That's a great catch.
16:37This guy is going to be a future secondary member of the Chargers.
16:40Maybe not this year, but next year.
16:41This guy can play.
16:42That's one heck of a play right there by Genesis Smith.
16:47This trip to the red zone is brought to you by TDECU.
16:54Second down and ten in the red zone at the 18-yard line.
16:57Whittington with the carry.
16:58A cut up the field.
16:59And Whittington ran right into the big body of Dye.
17:04The linebacker was there first.
17:06And then Carter came in to help clean him up.
17:08Jameer Carter.
17:10Jameer Carter coming off that back side.
17:12And this is a play where all you have to do is really run down the sideline and make sure
17:15run down the line and make sure you're keeping those angles straight so you can be that
17:19backside help.
17:20And you know playing this in the preseason.
17:22You know Davis Mills is, if he pulls it, great.
17:25I can get back out there.
17:26But you know what?
17:27If I'm coming hard down the line, I get a good shot on that running back.
17:30You make him feel it in those ribs afterwards.
17:32Like, oh.
17:33I know you took a few shots like that.
17:35Yeah, just a few.
17:37And received.
17:40On third down.
17:41Mills throw.
17:42Catch is made.
17:43It's a first down.
17:44Jared Wayne inside the seven where it's first and goal.
17:49Another good pitch and catch as Mills finds a camp star in Jared Wayne.
17:54Yeah, Jay Wayne has been tremendous in this camp.
17:56He's been here for four years.
17:58And he fights.
18:00I think you last year, Kevin, had the Niners and the Texans here.
18:03Yep.
18:04He had to play in that game.
18:05No Nico, no Christian Kirk last year.
18:07He had a tremendous ball game.
18:08A couple of catches on third down for first downs.
18:11He's at a great camp.
18:12He's a big body.
18:13He works at this.
18:14I really want to see Jared Wayne make this team.
18:16We need players like that on his squad.
18:18First down and goal at the seven.
18:20Play action.
18:22Mills on the roll.
18:24And Mills will just tuck that one out of bounds.
18:26Second and goal coming up for the Texans.
18:28And what I like about that play, Davis Mills is showing his maturity.
18:31This is why it's good to have those five-year guys with a lot of experience as your backup.
18:35A younger guy you feel like would have tried to take it upfield or would have tried to squeeze the
18:39ball in there and maybe lose it.
18:40But Davis Mills, he's been around the block many times and he knows, you know what, let me just run
18:44out of bounds and save it for another play.
18:46He's more athletic than people want to give him credit for.
18:49After last year against Jacksonville, I was joking with him.
18:51I said, 4-5, hon.
18:52He looked at me after he scrambled in against Jacksonville and he's like, yep, 4-5.
18:56He's legit fast.
18:58He really can move.
18:59Tenth play of the drive.
19:00Second down and goal.
19:01Looking for some space on the left side is Whittington.
19:04And he's down at the five.
19:06Third down coming up for Houston.
19:08You have a young running back.
19:10Especially on a drafted one.
19:11He's trying to make plays.
19:12I think he got a little excited there.
19:13I think his cut was back to the right by the center, but he darted back out left.
19:18He probably stays back to the right.
19:21I think he's got something, but he kind of danced left.
19:23He's just trying to get himself into the end zone.
19:25Big third down here in a low red zone.
19:27This is where Davis Mills has got to be money and put this one in.
19:32He's got Watson to his left, motion across from Foster Morrow.
19:40And on third and goal, Mills throws to the end zone.
19:44Jump ball going to get it.
19:45It's Jared Wayne.
19:47And the Texans have their first touchdown of the 2026 preseason.
19:51And you see why they like these big body wide receivers like Jared Wayne.
19:54When you're talking about Xavier Hutchinson, Nico Collins.
19:57Because now you throw that alley-oop pass and you tell that big receiver, just go up and get it.
20:02Yeah, big catch radius.
20:03He boxed out the corner.
20:05Corner had no chance on that one.
20:08And Jay Wayne gets in the end zone.
20:10I'm so happy.
20:12So happy for Jared Wayne.
20:14You know, it's a guy that took a lot of heat after the Tankdale injury.
20:17You know, Tank said, look, man, it happens.
20:19But he took a lot of heat from fans.
20:21And that guy has done nothing but work and work and work.
20:24And to see him have a great first drive here, I couldn't be more pleased for that guy.
20:28Freeman with the extra point.
20:30It is good.
20:31And a 7-3 lead for the Houston Texans.
20:36An impressive march for Houston.
20:39Culminates in a Jared Wayne ladder-climbing touchdown.
20:447-3 Houston late in the first.
20:48Sweets remaining.
20:50Now is the time to secure your place in history for the Texans' 25th season.
20:53And watch marquee matchups against the Bills, Bengals, Cowboys, and more in a private suite.
20:58Call or scan the QR code now.
21:03Jared Wayne.
21:05Huge roll on that drive.
21:07Ending in the touchdown catch.
21:08An 11-play, 66-yard drive.
21:11And the Texans are on top 7-3.
21:16From the 8-yard line.
21:18Looking for a little space is Patterson.
21:21And nowhere to go for Jarrett Patterson.
21:23He gets hit, sent back, and swarmed back at the 22.
21:29First man down, number 37, Colin Wright.
21:33He makes plays on defense.
21:35You make a few more on special teams.
21:37You find a role on this team.
21:38And at number 37, watch this young man get there first.
21:42Make the first contact.
21:43Slow him up.
21:44And the national champion, Aiden Fisher, finishes him off.
21:49Colin Wright, we asked everybody about him.
21:51We were talking with Reed Blankenship yesterday.
21:53He said, it seems like every day he's made a play.
21:55And he goes, he got a soft spot for undrafted guys.
21:57We've all got to stick together, he said.
21:59But he shows up ready to work.
22:00He just knows what he's doing.
22:03That's been a common theme with Colin Wright.
22:07Lance, off play action, over the middle,
22:09finding what has become his favorite target.
22:11And Keiondre Lambert-Smith for the first down at the 38.
22:15It's a good little pitch and catch right there.
22:17He had plenty of time in the pocket.
22:19Colin Wright, just a half step behind.
22:22But Keiondre Lambert can play.
22:23And Colin Wright was still there to make the play.
22:25I mean, he was right where he needed to be.
22:27The next step, just making sure you get your hands on the ball.
22:29That's a well-thrown ball.
22:30Trey Lance has got that in him.
22:32Like, he has that in him.
22:34It just has never really all come together.
22:36He'll back up Justin Herbert, but he can do some things.
22:39Toss play, Vidal.
22:40Nowhere to go this time.
22:42But Kemani Vidal upended as he got to the edge
22:45and just nowhere for him to go
22:47after Jake Hummel got him around the ankles.
22:50You know, one thing about from when N.D. played until now,
22:54linebackers that played behind N.D. were 6'3", 250, 6'2", 245.
23:01Linebackers now are 6'1", 6'2", 230.
23:03Well, they're former safeties.
23:04And they're former safeties.
23:06I mean, Jake Hummel, at some point in his career,
23:08I think at Iowa State, did play safety.
23:09Wade Woodhead did play safety at Clemson.
23:11And Marte Mapu is the guy who played safety.
23:14They're all up there, a linebacker right now.
23:17Second down and 11.
23:19Under pressure is Lance, able to break away.
23:23That's what he does.
23:24He's so elusive.
23:25Chased out of bounds and shoved out by Dominique Robinson.
23:29But he is a tough, tough individual to bring down.
23:33Alec Gay had a chance at him, and he just slipped free.
23:36One of the worst feelings in the world
23:38is what you're about to see on this replay.
23:39It is so tough to get to the quarterback.
23:42It's so tough to beat a tackle or offensive guard to get there.
23:45And when you get your arms around him and you lose it,
23:48he will be staying up tonight thinking about that play,
23:51regardless of how many sacks he ends up with.
23:53He is that kind of guy.
23:55That will be with him like six years from now.
23:57He'll remember he didn't get a sack when he should have.
24:00Good rush, good power rush against Logan Taylor.
24:02Right tackle.
24:03Third and 13 at the 35.
24:05Pressure again.
24:06Lance steps free.
24:07Now throws over the middle, almost intercepted.
24:12Jalen Reed was there and nearly able to snare that.
24:19That's the kind of throw you really wanted Trey Lance to be more accurate.
24:22He missed that one.
24:23If he's more accurate, Jalen Reed might take that to the house.
24:26He made a great read.
24:27He saw it all the way, made the break, but the throw was high.
24:31That's when you're happy Trey Lance was inaccurate if you're a Chargers fan.
24:37So, fourth and 13, and the Texans defense forcing the punt.
24:42Lewis Bond, the rookie from Boston College, back deep for Houston.
24:49Excellent punt.
24:50Bond driven back to the nine-yard line.
24:53Bond a little lane at the 20 across the 25.
24:57And Bond is down at the 27-yard line with a flag down, back near the 33 on the other
25:02side of the field.
25:04Man, I really thought you were going to give it a Bond.
25:07Lewis Bond.
25:08Not yet.
25:09Not yet.
25:10Number 14, return team.
25:12Ten-yard penalty.
25:13Timeout.
25:14Don't use the good lines on plays that aren't big plays, John Harris.
25:20Now you've spoiled it.
25:21You had a shot.
25:32One, two, three, one, two, three, win.
25:38Terrible towels are out, and a sold-out crowd at Akershire Stadium is ready for the Steelers 2025 home opener
25:45as your 1-0 Steelers host, 0-1 Seattle Seahawks.
25:48You're excited, man.
25:50Football's about to happen.
25:51Let's go.
25:52Absolutely.
25:53Let's go.
25:56In his first game in Pittsburgh as a Steeler, Aaron Rodgers looked comfortable in his new home.
26:04Classic Rodgers cadence gets a free play, floats it out for Metcalf, elevates, and makes the catch.
26:12He's going left side, he's got some blocking.
26:14He turns up, he's down inside the five.
26:16Touchdown!
26:17Back to pass, looking at a loft to the right, up, jump ball, brought in by D.K. Metcalf.
26:23Touchdown, Pittsburgh Steelers.
26:26Mike McDonald's Seahawks came knocking, and Rodgers' house party soon got out of hand.
26:31To his left, to his left, on the move, corner of the end zone, and it's picked off by Darion
26:37Kendrick.
26:38He brings the ants to the picnic.
26:40He brought defenders to the ball.
26:47Oh, bad bounce goes through the hands of Caleb Johnson.
26:50He may have touched that ball.
26:52That would be a live ball.
26:54Let's see what the ruling is here.
26:58It is a touchdown!
27:00It's a touchdown!
27:01Players, it's not just broadcasters, it's fans as well.
27:05And on first down, the Texans go up the middle, pick up three.
27:09Joshua Pitsenberger with his first opportunity, and new quarterback Graham Mertz on the field for Houston.
27:15Yeah, I love seeing Graham Mertz on the field, but you know if I got an Ivy Leaguer on the
27:17field, I'm going to point it out.
27:18Josh Pitsenberger, Offensive Player of the Year in the Ivy League, absolute stud.
27:24Best football league in the country, says the man who went to Brown.
27:28Thank you.
27:31Second down and seven, Mertz alone in the shotgun.
27:34Four-man rush, first toss of the night for Mertz, and the catch is made at the 15-yard line
27:39by Jared Wayne again.
27:41What a start to the night.
27:44He has had to rather Wayne out to the 11-yard line, short of the 15 by four yards.
27:48You know what I like about Jared?
27:49He can line up in a lot of different spots.
27:51He does that from the slot, and you see a little bit of a slip there at the end.
27:55He's got some catch and run ability.
27:57He doesn't just have a big catch radius.
27:59He can catch it and get upfield, but just seeing him be productive, two catches for 14 yards, both on
28:04third down on the first drive.
28:13On third down, Mertz pressured, floats it down the sideline, one-on-one coverage, the pass incomplete.
28:19There is no flag.
28:21He was trying to drop it into Lewis Bond.
28:23The coverage from Avery Smith, the rookie from Toledo that's been the talk of Chargers camp, but it's fourth down.
28:30Avery Smith was one of my favorite draft prospects.
28:33Now, he got beat by Jared Wayne.
28:35That dude can cover.
28:37He was one of my favorites out of Toledo.
28:39I was thinking the Texans might take a look as an undrafted or late day three.
28:43Really good player.
28:44Graham, third and four, decided to let Lewis Bond see what he could do.
28:48Good pressure pickup by the O-line.
28:50He did have time to throw.
28:51Just unfortunate Avery Smith was just too good on that play.
28:54So time to punt it away.
28:56Kai Kroger, the new Texans punter.
28:58Darius Davis from the 43 with a flag down across the 45.
29:03Davis to midfield.
29:04A little stutter step and then a burst out of bounds near the Texans' 41, but we'll wait and see
29:08about the flag.
29:13Likely going to back the Chargers up.
29:15Looked like the initial indication was a hold against Los Angeles.
29:23After the 45-yard punt by Kroger, we'll see what Carl Cheffers tells us.
29:27Holding, number 27, receiving team, 10-yard penalty, first down.
29:33This is the end of the first quarter.
29:36So the Southlake, Texas native R.J. Mickens out of Carroll High School with the hold to help his home
29:43state team.
29:43Although he certainly didn't intend to do that.
29:45Threw one quarter a 7-3 lead for Houston.
29:49You're watching the Houston Texans preseason on Texans TV.
29:55The penalty during the punt.
29:58So on first down and 10, it's still Trey Lance.
30:01We expect to see him for most of the half at quarterback for the Chargers.
30:05And on first down, Lance on the roll, throws to the flat right side,
30:10and it's caught for a first down at the 45-yard line.
30:13Arande Gadsden moves it upfield for a first down, a pickup of 13.
30:21On first down and 10, Chargers back to work.
30:26Down 7-3, Texans defense.
30:29Got the hold in the red zone on the opening drive if you're joining us late.
30:39From the 47, a first down.
30:49And Lance over the middle.
30:52Big hit leveled at the 40-yard line, but hanging on.
30:55And it is a first down.
30:59So Thompson with the catch and a first down.
31:0714-yard pickup on the play.
31:10And the Chargers trying to get things moving here early in this second quarter.
31:21So on first down and 10, handoff over the right side.
31:25And a pickup of about five.
31:30And then he'll bring up second down.
31:34Well, we are very excited to have special guests with us in the booth tonight.
31:39Cal and Hannah McNair joining us as the preseason is underway.
31:43It's so good to see you both.
31:45Congratulations on the 25th season of Texans football about to get underway.
31:49Well, I guess it officially is underway through a quarter and a half right now.
31:52It's great to be here.
31:53First quarter is already done.
31:55So we're already leading.
31:57So it's off to a good start.
31:58But thanks for having us here.
31:59Well, it's such a thrill to have football back.
32:01And it's so exciting to have a milestone season like the 25th underway.
32:07As the Texans defense trying to corral a very slippery quarterback, Trey Lance.
32:10And he slides down for the first 25-yard line.
32:13But what kinds of things can we expect for this 25th season other than, we hope, a trip
32:18to SoFi Stadium in late January, early February for a Super Bowl?
32:23Go ahead.
32:24Okay.
32:24A lot of exciting things for the 25th season, including the season opener against the Bills.
32:29We'll be celebrating Janice, but also our Liberty White, which will be really exciting.
32:32We also have rivalry, but there's a lot of exciting things.
32:36And it's so fun.
32:37We're going to celebrate our 25th season against the Cowboys, as is, you know, right, since
32:42we played our first game and beat them in our season opener.
32:45Well, and you mentioned Janice, and our condolences are shared as so many Texan fans have shared
32:49with you both over the course of the last month and a half since Janice McNair passed
32:54at the age of 89.
32:55And I know how much your mom meant to this city and how much this team and this franchise
33:01meant.
33:01It was wonderful and very supportive.
33:04So we're looking forward to a great year.
33:06We'll celebrate her all through the year.
33:08In 25 years, it went by like that.
33:11I mean, it really went fast.
33:12And I can't believe that it was holding me up the helmet, announcing the logo and the
33:17name of the team and all that seems like just yesterday.
33:20But here we are 25 years later.
33:22We will have a rivalry uniform, which will be a lot of fun.
33:26So this season will be a lot of fun and we'll celebrate a lot of things.
33:29I'll say one thing about it.
33:30It's truly a family event with this team.
33:32I remember when I played here, Cal, you were at every practice with your father.
33:36Your mother was so kind to all the players.
33:38And just the entire family, y'all just made us as players feel like we were a part of it.
33:42So that's something.
33:43And I'm not just saying.
33:44I played for three teams and this was the one team where you actually knew the owners.
33:48You actually felt like y'all cared about us as people and like us as players.
33:52Oh, pretty fun.
33:54And we do.
33:54Yeah.
33:55And we do.
33:55And it's very evident.
33:56You see it in the interactions that you have with the players, with the coaches.
33:59You see it at practice every single day.
34:01What have you seen?
34:03I know you both have been out there a lot.
34:04What have you seen from D'Amico's squad, from a defense that was the best defense in the
34:08league last year?
34:08What do we have on the field shaping up for 2026?
34:12Well, I think you're going to see the defense take another step.
34:15They added a few pieces, which are really going to help.
34:17They're in the system.
34:18You know, another year, the players are playing together.
34:20They're really meshing well.
34:22And then on offense, we're seeing them take another step in the second year in this offense.
34:28And again, added a few pieces there at running back.
34:31We saw the tight end make a few plays in their first drive.
34:35And a touchdown for the Chargers.
34:37And so Los Angeles, back on top, the McNairs are going to leave soon because they're going
34:42to feel like they're a jinx here all of a sudden.
34:43I don't know how y'all do this without saying things on here.
34:46I keep biting my tongue.
34:48It's not easy.
34:48It's not easy.
34:50We've mentioned second seasons.
34:51Second season for the On the 50 podcast.
34:53What do we have coming up?
34:55Any hints as to the guests that we can expect as far as Texans fans going up with season
35:00two of your podcast?
35:02I think there's going to be some incredible people on the podcast this year.
35:05There will be a couple surprises, but you'll have to stay tuned to see that.
35:08Okay.
35:09That's it.
35:09That's what's called a broadcast tease.
35:11I like that very much.
35:12And she's being humble right now.
35:13We're celebrating 25 years of the Texans.
35:15We're celebrating the start of the new season.
35:17But we're also celebrating you being honored, Women Who Mean Business, honoree by the Houston
35:22Business Journal.
35:23So congratulations on that.
35:25They're a few years too late, but better late than that.
35:27No, I'm surrounded by incredible people who, you know, make me look good.
35:32So I'm thankful to all of them for all their help.
35:34But really, you guys, what I really want to watch tonight is all the rookies and, you
35:38know, these guys making plays.
35:39And I loved seeing Marlon Klein in that first drive we had.
35:43He made some great plays.
35:44Well, if we could ask for your permission to stick around for a little bit with us,
35:48we've got to take a quick commercial break.
35:49We will return with Callan Hanna-McNair when we get back here and, of course, a season
35:55in which we have our thoughts on Janice McNair all year long.
36:02With a 10-7 lead, Houston's offense about to get back onto the field.
36:07We've still got Callan Hanna-McNair with us in the booth for just another minute or two
36:11as the Texans, after the kickoff, looking for a burst across the 30 out near the 35-yard
36:18line is where Houston will start first down and 10.
36:21Big vote coming up in October.
36:23There's such a huge push for women's flag football.
36:25It's now getting into colleges all across the country.
36:28And it's coming up that while you guys are in London, the big vote to sanction women's
36:32flag football in Texas.
36:33Yes.
36:34So we're trying to make Texas next.
36:35And the vote is in October when we are in London.
36:37So I won't be there.
36:39But I'm really hoping that all the superintendents and ADs come together and make Texas next
36:44and make it UIL sanctioned.
36:45There's such an incredible push for girls' flag football.
36:49And my daughter plays.
36:51And I mean, everywhere I go in Houston, people are like, thank you so much.
36:54My daughter's playing.
36:55And just the tryouts.
36:56You have 90 girls coming out to tryouts for one team.
37:00And it's incredible, the excitement for girls' flag football.
37:03But we've also got love volleyball.
37:05So we're hitting kind of all these female sports.
37:08And we're really excited about that.
37:10Well, as the father of daughters, I wish they'd have had the opportunity to have sanctioned
37:13flag football when they were little.
37:15And certainly volleyball is a sport that has just overwhelmed this country in popularity,
37:20outpacing women's basketball in a lot of states at the high school level.
37:23And League One volleyball has been tremendous to watch.
37:26You mentioned London.
37:28This is such a great opportunity for Texans football to be prominent on the international
37:33stage.
37:34And when you guys go over to London, what kind of an experience is that going to be for
37:37this franchise?
37:38Well, this is our second trip.
37:40We ended in the first one.
37:41We had a great time over there.
37:43The team played well.
37:45Did you play in that game for us?
37:46That was after overtime.
37:48I'm that old.
37:49They played well.
37:51We're undefeated over there.
37:52The crowds are great.
37:54They're very welcoming.
37:56Great facilities.
37:57And so we look forward to going back.
37:58It's just so special.
37:59And they love watching football.
38:00I mean, it's so funny because the suite next to us was just cheering on every single
38:03play.
38:04And I said, do y'all know what you're cheering for?
38:06And they said, no, we just love it.
38:07And I'm like, okay.
38:09That's what we love, too.
38:10We love fans.
38:11Funny story.
38:11I was in Scotland this summer.
38:12I had my Texan shirt on.
38:14And somebody yelled out, Houston, Texans, and Edinburgh.
38:18There's a reason there are nine international games this year.
38:21The league loves going overseas.
38:23And fans love seeing the Houston Texans and all the teams in the league when they make
38:27their way over.
38:28Cal, Hannah, thank you so much for coming up.
38:30It's such a pleasure to see you.
38:32Best of luck this season.
38:33Enjoy the rest of this game.
38:34You can actually go back and get to watch it again.
38:35And enjoy as the season begins.
38:37Can't wait to see how this season unfolds for Houston.
38:39Thanks for having us.
38:40Thank you.
38:41Thank you so much.
38:42Cal and Hannah McNair with us in the booth.
38:44And now they're going to go back and watch some of these youngsters play as this season,
38:48preseason opener continues here in Houston.
38:51First down and 10.
38:52And the Texans on the move with Graham Mertz at quarterback on first down.
38:57Mertz will throw over the middle.
38:58The catch is made and down at the 24-yard line.
39:02Good pitch and catch.
39:03Josh Kelly with the grab.
39:06Another guy who's had a very strong camp.
39:09And Kelly going up top to pull this one in.
39:10And you talk about good pitch and catch.
39:12I really like the pitch because Kelly didn't have to break his stride to catch that ball,
39:16even though he's throwing it in front of three defenders, in between three defenders.
39:20What was funny about sitting with the McNair's, they were so anxious about getting back to watch the game.
39:25They were like, hurry up because we want to get back and watch the game.
39:28That's a true football fan.
39:29Yeah, they weren't alone.
39:30Somebody wanted to get over here and watch the game too.
39:33Somebody wanted to be in there.
39:34You missed a couple of nice Noah Whittington runs.
39:37Hopefully this is another one.
39:37And there is another one.
39:39Whittington a little punishment at the end of the run down to the 16-yard line.
39:45Did you guys have fun?
39:46Oh, they're great.
39:47Yeah.
39:48Nice.
39:48Always a tremendous thing to see Cal and Hannah McNair.
39:51And their passion for Texans football and for this city in general, it's something special.
39:58I mean, we sit up here in this booth and they've been so good, Cal and Hannah, to everybody up
40:05here.
40:05It's just, it's been fantastic to have them around.
40:08And hopefully we've got a team now that can go win a Super Bowl
40:11and give back to the community in a whole different way.
40:14Hitsenberger on second and short.
40:16And he's stopped a yard shy of the first down tackle made in the middle of that line
40:22by T-Rod Edwards, former Illinois fighting Illini, who began his career in Northwestern.
40:28He makes the stop.
40:31One thing we've been wanting to see from this offense has been the run game.
40:35We've seen it on his drive.
40:37Guys up front getting some movement, running some duo inside, getting some movement.
40:41And those big guys, you talk about Edwards, he's gotten moved a few times.
40:44And so Pitsenberger and no Whittington have been nice on his drive.
40:47And on third and short, Whittington, a little jump cut, trying to plunge for that first down.
40:52He's so close.
40:54Looks to be maybe a half yard short on the initial spot.
40:59And it'll bring up fourth down.
41:03We've seen what D'Amico Ryans has done tonight on fourth.
41:07Got to think fourth and short, another opportunity to work on a fourth and short play.
41:10Yeah, D'Amico's not Dan Campbell, but in the preseason, he might as well be.
41:14He's going for this, there's no doubt.
41:16He wants to see this offensive line get that movement, not have to do a play action rollout
41:22like they did on the first fourth down.
41:23Let's just jam this thing in here and get Noah Whittington at first down.
41:27Fourth down and short.
41:29Mertz on the sneak.
41:31Mertz trying to push his way forward.
41:33It's going to be close.
41:34Oh, boy.
41:35Initial surge looked very close.
41:38Did he get there?
41:40The spot shows short.
41:42And that's what you hope for, that initial surge, because obviously he fell about two yards back,
41:46but it looks like the defense held up, and now there's going to be a turnover on downs.
41:51Yeah, I thought he had it at the initial push, but he got pushed back.
41:54So, good stop by the Chargers.
41:56But D'Amico Ryans wanted to see it.
41:57He wanted to see that offensive line get off the ball, get some movement.
42:01Unfortunately, not enough.
42:02So, a turnover on downs after an impressive drive.
42:05Chargers with the football when we return to Houston.
42:14First star this far, he and Jared Wayne have been tremendous in the receiving game.
42:17On first down and ten.
42:20Hand off up the middle and nothing doing this time.
42:23Nowhere to go for Jared Patterson.
42:26Buried in the backfield.
42:28You saw Jake Hummel at the bottom of the pile.
42:30Jalen Reed there as well.
42:31Texans get to the football quickly.
42:35Linebackers and safeties shooting gaps.
42:38Defensive line taking care of it up front.
42:40Those linebackers and safeties shooting gaps and getting there.
42:43Holding Jared Patterson, which, by the way, a little trivia question.
42:46This is the only preseason game we'll have throughout the NFL where we have the same name on either side.
42:51Jared Patterson and Jared Patterson.
42:53How about that little trivia?
42:54The only one?
42:58On second and long.
43:00Lance to the sideline.
43:02Almost intercepted.
43:04Kamari Ramsey had visions of a touchdown.
43:08And it's third down instead.
43:10I'll tell you what.
43:10The 2026 fifth round pick.
43:12I talked about Ali Gay.
43:14Going to have nightmares about that missed sack.
43:16He's going to have nightmares about this missed interception.
43:18Because the Houston Texans last year, they were known for the interceptions.
43:2119 interceptions.
43:23Four guys had four more interceptions.
43:25That's just what they do.
43:26And you know Ramsey is really going to be kicking himself.
43:28The only reason he wouldn't have scored is Brennan Thompson runs 4-2-4 and may have caught him.
43:34But Kamari Ramsey, the right spot against the fastest receiver in his building.
43:37Great job by Ramsey.
43:39He's got to catch it.
43:39Third down and 10.
43:41Lance going deep.
43:43Lambert Smith's got to step.
43:44The ball underthrown and it's incomplete.
43:47Colin Wright able to catch up as that underthrown ball forced Lambert Smith to slow up a bit.
43:52One of the things you like about a young rookie defender is he has excellent idea where the ball is.
43:59His ball skills are very, very good.
44:01He knew, kind of missed time to jump a little bit, but he knew that even though Lambert Smith was
44:07behind him,
44:07he still was in phase with where the ball was.
44:10A lot of DBs lose the ball and that gets him out of position.
44:13Lambert Smith could have made the catch, but a good job there.
44:15Again, that name, Colin Wright, that guy right there is making it really tough to get solidified at the number
44:21three corner.
44:22J-Rock, Colin Wright, man, it's going to be a battle the rest of camp.
44:27Lewis Bond is the deep man.
44:31Bond from the 36.
44:33Gets away from that initial blast.
44:35Still on his feet and back to where he all started at the 36-yard line.
44:4249-yard punt and the most dramatic zero-yard return you might see all season long.
44:50Hand off on the right side and some running for Pitsenberger out near the 37-yard line.
44:56Picks up a couple before he's tripped up, but it's second down.
45:00This Texans offense, one of the areas that you looked at last year and said,
45:04gosh, they'd like to do this more, is that 12 or 13 personnel play action on the roll,
45:10throwing for the sideline, out of bounds.
45:13When you talk about Marlon Klein, you have to really give credit to the scouting department
45:17because when you look at his stats at Michigan, they weren't these eye-catching stats.
45:21But then when you watch him, and I know when I went out to that last practice,
45:24I didn't see the number and I just saw somebody catch the ball.
45:27He looked so fluid.
45:28And I was like, John, which receiver is that?
45:30You're like, nope, that's Marlon Klein, the tight end.
45:33So credit to them not looking just at the stats, but understanding his potential.
45:37How is the injury to Brevin Jordan that he's dinged up a little bit in camp?
45:40How is that impacting this race?
45:42Well, I think it mucks it up a little bit, but it kind of frees it up with the way
45:45that
45:45Marlon has played since Brevin has been banged up.
45:48I just want to see Brevin get back on the field.
45:50That's what I want to see.
45:51Two straight years of ACL tears.
45:53I want to see him get out and do what he does best.
45:55Mertz almost intercepted.
45:57He saw Cade Stover as we talk tight ends out of the corner of his eye, and RJ Mickens nearly
46:03had the pick.
46:05Stover's another one that's had a really good camp.
46:07You see him get free, but a nice play right there by Mickens.
46:12Almost came up with a beautiful one-handed catch.
46:15That's a couple times the Chargers have had a couple one-handed catches by their DBs, not
46:18able to hang on.
46:19But Stover's another one that you throw in there because of all the different, you talked
46:23about the machinations of 13 personnel, one running back, three tight ends.
46:26Well, you can put one at fullback.
46:28You can play one at the wing.
46:29One guy can be in motion.
46:30There's a lot you can do with this group.
46:32I just would like to see Brevin get in.
46:34I want to say get in the fight because he was doing really well before he ended up having
46:38that knee injury that sidelined him for a little bit.
46:42Speed to the edge and out of bounds at the 25-yard line.
46:45Brennan Thompson, after the 52-yard punt, tried to get to the edge, got there, but ran out
46:52of room.
46:5210-7 Chargers on offense next.
46:56Will Anderson relaxing tonight.
46:59You know that the best young defensive end in football is going to have plenty of opportunity
47:06to be out there on the field wreaking havoc very soon.
47:09On first down, toss play to Patterson with a flag down.
47:14Patterson down at the 27, but we'll wait and see about the penalty.
47:21Offside, number 95, defense.
47:24Five-yard penalty.
47:25Free play first down.
47:27Well, you look at Will Anderson and what he did last year.
47:3050 pressures on third down last year.
47:32The most ever in the history of the NFL.
47:34You see the 85 total, second most in the NFL, and a 29% pressure rate on third down.
47:43You know he's coming, and you still can't stop him.
47:45You know he's coming.
47:46You can't stop him.
47:47This guy, he's one of the few players I'm in awe of watching him play and practice.
47:51For those that get a chance to get out to practice, just watch him practice.
47:55Watch the way he prepares, and then you see why he's so productive during the game.
47:59He takes every single practice snap like it's a game snap.
48:03Down at five.
48:04Lance to the sideline.
48:05Coming back to get it is Lambert Smith, and he's got a first down to the 44.
48:09And one more thing about Will Anderson that makes him special.
48:12You mentioned all the stats.
48:13You mentioned all the numbers.
48:15He makes so many plays that don't even show up at the stats.
48:18He disrupts his plays, and that's what he's bringing.
48:20So I see him in OTAs down on the far field before practice starts,
48:24and he's with Rod Wright and Frank Ocum, defensive line coaches.
48:27And I'm just watching, and I see him show an offensive lineman's movement.
48:34And he's trying to explain to Frank, hey, this is what I saw in practice.
48:37He then works for the next five minutes with Rod and with Frank to work a move
48:42if he gets that particular pass set.
48:43And I'm telling you, later in team drills, he got that pass set,
48:47and he worked it perfectly.
48:48In OTAs, we're not talking during a game.
48:51We're not talking about your practice in training camp.
48:55But OTAs, he's down working on these moves of what he can do.
49:01Penalty flag down on the sideline after the incomplete pass.
49:04From a 95 defense, lined up in the neutral zone.
49:06Five-yard penalty.
49:09Replay first down.
49:10That's the second time for Allie Gay on this drive.
49:12He's trying to get that sack back that he missed,
49:14so he's trying to cheat the ball.
49:16I thought we would just rewound the TV.
49:18That's what I do at home if I want to see another play.
49:20I thought it was rewind.
49:22But there he is.
49:23He's in the neutral zone right there on the far right side.
49:27That was close.
49:28You don't call that at home.
49:29You defensive lineman.
49:30That's what you think about it.
49:32Nah, he's not offside.
49:33He's three yards in the backfield.
49:36On first down and five,
49:37our second quarter replays are brought to you by Mustang Cat.
49:46And a first down coming up for the Los Angeles Chargers.
49:50As the clock should run us down to the two-minute warning here
49:54in the first half.
49:55A little two-minute drill to work with
49:57over the last portion of this second quarter.
50:01Chargers with a 10-7 lead.
50:04This is the two-minute warning.
50:04So the two-minute warning arrives in Houston.
50:07Will Anderson much more relaxed
50:10than he will be in a few weeks
50:11when the season gets underway.
50:17Oh, he caught it.
50:18That's crazy.
50:19Did you have a hearing in on the side?
50:21It was bingo.
50:23Yeah.
50:24I just got one right now.
50:28What was it?
50:31I love you.
50:32I love you, bro.
50:33I love you, bro.
50:35I love you, bro.
50:36I love you, bro.
50:37I love you, bro.
50:39I love you, bro.
50:41I love you, bro.
50:42I love you, bro.
50:42You found my earring.
50:43You're on the field.
50:45You found it on the field?
50:47Stafford to the...
50:48...time show brought to you by Texas Children's,
50:50official Children's Hospital of the Houston Texans.
50:52We've got a sneak peek of the latest edition of Iron Sharpens Iron,
50:55as well as behind-the-scenes access with Keelan Rutledge.
50:58That's coming up on the Texas Children's Halftime Show.
51:06Two minutes remaining in this opening half, and a 10-7 lead for the Chargers.
51:11Trey Lance has gone the entire way for Los Angeles at quarterback.
51:17Patterson, the running back, on first down and 10.
51:20And it's Jared Patterson with the carry.
51:22Big hit in the hole.
51:23A flag is down, and what a stick from Kayvon Merriweather.
51:30That's the way you fill a gap.
51:32Holding number 75 offense.
51:3510-yard penalty.
51:36Replay first down.
51:37See, Kayvon just...
51:39...a missile coming from the backside.
51:42He saw that run all the way and just landed.
51:45See, that's what you love is a safety as it evens the back,
51:47because you can't do that in training camp.
51:49Right.
51:49You've got to come up and thud and, you know, maybe tag off.
51:53You might get the rogue safety that takes a hit,
51:55and then there's a big fight.
51:57Kayvon just took a direct line, saw the run the whole way,
52:00and delivered a blow.
52:01Great job there, Kayvon Merriweather from Iowa.
52:06They have some players from back there.
52:08First-year Texan, three years in Tampa before getting here.
52:12And a first and 20 after the hole.
52:14Lance on a slant into traffic, and that could have been a pick.
52:18Very close for Elijah Hussey to get a hand on that one
52:22and take it the other way.
52:24Well, he read this beautifully.
52:26He knew exactly where this ball was going.
52:29Just didn't judge it properly.
52:31He didn't go over it.
52:32He was kind of caught in between.
52:33Do I hit him or I go for the ball?
52:35Always go for the ball.
52:36The hit can be secondary, but he should have caught that football.
52:39But Elijah Hussey playing the nickel spot.
52:41He's a guy with a lot of athleticism.
52:43Last year at this time, we didn't get a chance to see him
52:45because he was injured rehabbing from a college injury.
52:47Guy can make some plays.
52:49First and 10 line this quarter is brought to you by Mattress Firm.
52:55Lance to the sideline.
52:57Thompson with the catch at the Texans' 39-yard line.
53:01He's short of the first down by about three yards.
53:04It'll bring up third and short.
53:06And every once in a while, you start to see why guys were taken number three overall.
53:10Things didn't work out.
53:11And mainly in football, in the NFL, when things don't work out with guys that are talented,
53:15they're just not consistent.
53:16But you're seeing flashes from Trey Lance.
53:18It's like, oh, yeah, that guy was a top five pick at one point.
53:22I mean, he played one year in college.
53:24And then because of the COVID season, he played one game and then basically had to declare.
53:29And he did.
53:29And he was number three pick in the draft.
53:31There's a lot of talent there.
53:32And you hit it perfectly.
53:33He's got the arm to make those throws.
53:35On third down, Lance, pressure comes.
53:39Fields open to his left, but he stops, throws.
53:41Stumbling catch is made at the 25 by Jarrett Patterson.
53:45And it's a first down for Los Angeles.
53:48And again, I don't want to give too much credit to the opposing court.
53:51Offensive ends.
53:52Yes, we're seeing the backups.
53:53We're seeing the second and third stringers.
53:55But they have that same mentality.
53:56They show the same athleticism that we've been accustomed to with the starters.
53:59And you can tell that they all learn from one another.
54:02And you're seeing it here with the younger players.
54:04Yeah, they're just going to be behind Will Anderson, Daniel Hunter.
54:08Xavier Clowney has obviously been in the building now.
54:10But they've always gone with the fourth guy.
54:12They've always been in that rotation.
54:13So Dylan Horton, Allie Gay, Dominic Robinson, those guys, they've got to really step up.
54:20And, hey, I want to be that fourth defensive end of this team because you'll play a lot.
54:23First down and 10.
54:24Lance throws it this time.
54:26It's intercepted.
54:27The pick and room to run.
54:29Kamari Ramsey out of bounds near midfield.
54:34Well, we said that he was going to be upset with himself because he missed the interception
54:38early in the game.
54:39Well, he definitely made up for it there.
54:41And he's feeling pretty good as he's reminding everybody what his name is on the back of that jersey.
54:46It's a great read.
54:47He saw that slant coming the whole way.
54:49He had no other threat to challenge him.
54:52And he read Trey Lance's eyes.
54:54And then he had double catch it.
54:55It's like, no, you've got to catch that, Kamari.
54:57He did great job getting up the field.
54:59And now you've got a little time to work with here.
