00:00...to step into that backup quarterback role, compete with it, for it with Luke Altmaier.
00:04Evan McPherson, Bengals fans, must feel like it was yesterday, he was a rookie, had that great run through the
00:10playoffs.
00:11We are ready to rock from Pacor Stadium.
00:16221 days since the last Lions game, we are off in the preseason.
00:21Raheem Blackshear took it out of the landing zone to about the 30-yard line.
00:28We are starting on offense first with Luke Altmaier, the rookie out of Illinois, as Patty mentioned.
00:34Signed with Detroit as an undrafted free agent, very accomplished in his career.
00:39Top five and most major passing stats in Illinois history, but that confidence is what Dan Campbell wants to see
00:45tonight.
00:45No doubt, and just continue to take what you've taken from the practice field and the meeting rooms,
00:50now under the lights, going against Cincinnati's starting defense.
00:53So you get a great opportunity here for both quarterbacks tonight to show what they can do.
00:57A rollout to his left on the first play, a short pitch, and it goes for no game.
01:03The catch from Tyler Conklin, the veteran tight end, brings another pass-catching presence to this Lions tight end room.
01:11But back to Altmaier, he said that he was really disappointed he wasn't drafted.
01:15He felt like he earned that opportunity.
01:18He described the experience as torturous, but he's still got his opportunity.
01:23Once you get your foot in the door, that's all that matters.
01:25You're going to have the same opportunity that anybody else in the building does, and now it just depends on
01:29what you do with it.
01:30From under center, a nice game for Jacob Saylors.
01:34Set up third and short.
01:36Saylors is going to get a bunch of carries this preseason.
01:39Oh, no doubt.
01:40And I think that he's a guy that really came onto the scene last year, undrafted guy, played in the
01:44U.S.
01:44for a while, let them in rushing, did some really good things in last training camp in preseason, standing out
01:50on special teams,
01:51ended up earning himself a spot on the team throughout the full season.
01:54So I'm excited to see what Saylors can do now with a full season under his belt.
02:05He's besides Altmaier in the shotgun, coming out of the backfield, fine.
02:09Saylors got the first down.
02:13Nice start for the Detroit offense.
02:14Our keys to the game brought to us by Rocket Mortgage.
02:17TJ, what do we have?
02:18And play clean.
02:18It's just, look, line up in the right spot.
02:20No silly mental mistakes.
02:22Don't line up offsides.
02:23Don't line up in the wrong spot.
02:24No pre-snap penalties.
02:26That's huge.
02:26And then when you go to the situation of football, starting right there, third down, can you convert?
02:30Can you take care of the football?
02:31When you get the red zone, can you put touchdowns up instead of settling for field goals?
02:34It's ultimately going to determine who wins this game.
02:38After the gain of eight for a first down, Altmaier back under center.
02:42He did it quite a bit at Illinois.
02:44His longest pass is on target.
02:46Got a flag opposite side of the field.
02:49It's a catch for now for the veteran Cedric Wilson, Jr.
02:53Yeah, it's got to be either offsides or maybe a misalignment from the offense.
02:59I know a big emphasis this year, the receivers.
03:02We'll get the call here.
03:03Offside.
03:04Defense number 90.
03:05Penalty's decline.
03:06Result of the play.
03:08First down.
03:12Great protection, too.
03:13Watch this.
03:13Luke Altmaier hits his back foot, finds his first read, delivers that football.
03:17That's a heck of a catch, too.
03:18Right over the middle of the field.
03:20But you know what I love about Luke Altmaier there?
03:23He found his first read.
03:24He got rid of the football.
03:25He didn't try to hold on to it and maybe take even a bigger play.
03:27He hit that back step.
03:28The protection was awesome up front.
03:30Unbelievable job by those guys on that starting offensive line.
03:34We go back to it.
03:36Dan Campbell said Altmaier wouldn't be phased.
03:38Has protection again.
03:40Tipped and picked.
03:43It was on target.
03:45Intercepted by Jordan Battle.
03:47The safety for Cincinnati.
03:49Coming off leading the league in tackles last year.
03:54Unfortunate break for Altmaier.
03:56Yeah, just unfortunate there.
03:58Took a bad bounce.
03:59Quick slant.
04:00Looked like it hit Tesla on the helmet.
04:03Turnover going the other way.
04:05Defense now going against the starters for Cincinnati and Joe Burrow.
04:12Under center on the first play and a handoff to Chase Brown.
04:15Cincinnati emphasizing more play action under center coming into the season.
04:20They have been a good offense when healthy.
04:22How will they test this Detroit defense today?
04:24Well, I think any time you have a quarterback like Joe Burrow,
04:27you have to be on your toes about anything, right?
04:30Whether it's the run game, whether it's the play action.
04:32He's actually got some wheels for being not necessarily a running quarterback,
04:36but any time you have Jamar Chase on the outside, he's a threat as well.
04:40So, great opportunity here to get some snaps for these guys against, like you said,
04:43Cincinnati starting offense.
04:46Part of one of the scariest receiver duos in the entire league with Tee Higgins.
04:51Play action.
04:52Burrow over the middle on target to guess who?
04:55Jamar Chase to shy midfield.
05:00That's a good throw, good protection.
05:03Anytime you give Joe Burrow that much time, doesn't matter what coverage you got behind him.
05:08If he can stand in that pocket for a few seconds, he's going to find that guy Jamar Chase right
05:12over the middle field there.
05:13So, got to find a way to get a little bit of pressure on Joe Burrow to make him, hopefully,
05:18try to get him to make a mistake.
05:19A reminder, most of the starters for the Lions are not playing tonight,
05:22but last year they were top five in the league in sacks.
05:26We'll see if they can apply some pressure on Burrow and these starters over the first couple of drives.
05:32Handed off again to Chase Brown.
05:34And a minimal game.
05:36All right, TJ, our players to watch brought to us by MGM Grand.
05:39And that guy right there, Devin White, two tackles already in the first four plays of the game.
05:43He is a guy who was incredible when he was down in Tampa.
05:47He gets to reunite with defensive line coach Casey Rogers.
05:50Kind of revived his career a little bit last year when he came to Vegas.
05:53Tackling machine.
05:54And then Nick Whiteside, coaches can't say enough good things about him.
05:57Not only what he's done on special teams and training camp, but competing for that starting corner job.
06:02We know that secondary is going to need a lot of help this year.
06:06Secondary that's been banged up in the past.
06:08That's got Kirby Joseph, Brian Branch out.
06:14Fake it this time.
06:15Burrow playing it.
06:16Pressure down he goes.
06:20Ahmed Hassanine, one of the breakout stars of camp, got there first.
06:25And that's what you talk about when you try to speed Joe Burrow up a little bit.
06:30Great coverage there in the back end.
06:32Joe Burrow, you can tell his first option wasn't there.
06:34His second option wasn't there.
06:35Look at Ahmed Hassanine.
06:36Coach is raving about him.
06:38He's just going to start a little loop there to the inside.
06:40Find some open grass.
06:41Get to Joe Burrow.
06:42That doesn't happen if you don't have the coverage on the back end.
06:44But great job by Hassanine to finish that play.
06:47He cut his body fat down 35% to 18%.
06:51Best shape of his life.
06:53He's been playing great in August.
06:56Check it down short.
06:57Samaje Pirine, the veteran back.
06:59That'll set up third and long.
07:03Make it fourth down.
07:04And the Bengals will have to punt after the sack from Hassanine.
07:07And that's a win by that defense.
07:08Anytime you come off of a turnover, a takeaway, where the other team starts to get the momentum going,
07:13you're probably losing points on that interception.
07:15Hey, defense, you know that's a tall order.
07:17They're going to come out with the momentum.
07:18They're going to come out with a little bit of juice and adrenaline.
07:20Way to go out there.
07:21Not a three and out, but way to get the stop.
07:23Keep them before that 50-yard line and hopefully set your offense up with some good field possession.
07:28No short engine.
07:28Great reactions either.
07:30Greg Dort's back to receive it.
07:32Experienced punt returner expected to take over that role for Khalif Raymond, who went to the Bears.
07:38What a start for Ahmed Hassanine in the preseason.
07:43It sure did.
07:44Now it's, hey, can you shake that off, right?
07:46Not your fault.
07:46Offense gets the ball back.
07:48Can we find a way to put a nice long drive here together and get some points on the board?
07:52And off to Sailors.
07:53Nice jump cut to get some positive yardage.
07:58Our players to watch brought to us by MGM Graham.
08:01Well, no surprise.
08:02Blake Miller.
08:03Everybody wants to see the first-round pick, right?
08:04So let's see what he can do out here against another team.
08:07It's nice probably, I'm sure, for him not going against Ed Hutchinson tonight.
08:10And then Isaac Tesla.
08:11Look, he's going to want that interception back, no doubt about it.
08:15But this kid's got a lot of potential.
08:16They're counting on him to do some real big things this season.
08:20He's got the size.
08:21The physicality's been working on his separation at the line of scrimmage.
08:24Fake the run this time.
08:26Altmyre.
08:26Short pass.
08:27Sailors the catch.
08:29Stumbles ahead.
08:30Got a flag behind the play.
08:36Timing kind of looked a little off on that screen.
08:39Maybe somebody downfield before the ball got thrown.
08:43Let's see what the officials say.
08:45Official change, by the way.
08:46Brandon Cruz instead of Craig Rolstad, which we thought we were going to get tonight.
08:50Got to keep us on our toes in the preseason.
08:51An eligible player downfield on a pass.
08:54Offense number 73.
08:56Five-yard penalty.
08:58It's second down.
08:59And screens are just such a timing play, right?
09:02Offensive line sometimes.
09:03If we get a one count or two count.
09:04Let's take a look at Blake Miller.
09:06He's going to have just a...
09:07And your job as an offense tackle on a screen.
09:09Look at that.
09:09Really nice job passing it off.
09:10Get your guy upfield.
09:12Get him out of that throwing lane.
09:13Get your running back some room there.
09:15Nice job.
09:16Just the timing was thrown off.
09:17Somebody got downfield a little too quick.
09:19It happens on screens.
09:21It's a big point of emphasis for him tonight to learn how to use his help.
09:26Altmaier, good protection.
09:27That was tipped.
09:30Yeah, and just to piggyback on what you're saying, yes.
09:33Rookies, sometimes you have to understand there are certain protections that are designed to help you.
09:38There are certain protections where you might have to go one-on-one, right?
09:41Like this play right here gets beat a little bit, but look at the feet staying alive.
09:44And he's able to drive Miles Murphy around the edge.
09:47And this tipped ball, it's probably a good thing that that was tipped because there was very good coverage on
09:51the back end.
09:52Not sure where that ball was going.
09:53But you know what?
09:54Not the worst thing to happen.
09:55You live for third down.
09:56You still give yourself a chance here to keep the sticks moving.
09:59Third and long.
10:02Altmaier standing and launching sideline over the head of Tesla.
10:06If you put it in his radius, he'll have a shot, but nothing there.
10:11Yeah, didn't really have a chance there on that one.
10:14Looked like it was maybe just a yard or two too far outside.
10:17And protection was good, unfortunately.
10:19Third and 15.
10:21The defense knows you've got to take a shot down the field.
10:24It was good coverage.
10:25Not really much you could do, but, you know, luckily, wasn't another turnover,
10:30especially with a couple of those tip passes there in the middle of that drag.
10:33Altmaier's a smart guy.
10:34He can actually solve a Rubik's Cube in under a minute.
10:36So another way to prove his intelligence is Jack Fox boots it away.
10:41Charlie Jones, the former All-American at Purdue, is waiting.
10:44He's a dangerous return man, and he's spun down to the 45.
10:49Got a flag.
10:57It's preseason.
10:58We're going to see a lot of yellow today.
11:02You guys are out there competing, man, flying 100 miles now.
11:04During the game, Colton, receiving team number 28.
11:07It's a 10-yard penalty from where the kick was caught.
11:10It'll be first down, timeout on the field.
11:13I'll go on Josh Newton for the Bengals.
11:15Penalties drive, coach is crazy.
11:17Scoreless so far, just about seven.
11:18Preseason opener, TJ, second drive for the Detroit defense against starters for Cincinnati.
11:23Yep, and I want to watch Devin White here.
11:25Already made a couple tackles.
11:27There he goes.
11:28And then another one.
11:29Rain's starting to come down a little bit.
11:31So defensively, you automatically think, hey, probably going to get a little bit more runs,
11:35maybe a little bit more three-step drop.
11:36Quick passing game.
11:37And Devin White, I'll tell you what, he's only been here for a couple weeks.
11:40But look at that, even last year, right behind Jack Kent, that's a lot of tackles.
11:44What did we say the total was?
11:45350, I think you said 360.
11:47I think I was right on that one.
11:48But you're insulting my ball state education.
11:50He can help this defense tremendously if he can get back to that form that he played last year
11:55and even when he was with Tampa Bay.
11:59And another short game.
12:01It'll be third down.
12:03Yeah, what does Devin White bring possibly for this defense going forward?
12:07Because he said he wanted to play for a contender.
12:09That's why he chose the Lions.
12:11Yeah, and I think that he probably saw a place where he can come in and compete right away.
12:16And look at that.
12:16You get a pulling guard.
12:17He goes and meets him.
12:18Probably not going to get credit for the tackle.
12:19But he brings physicality.
12:21But he also brings, watching him in training camp cover Sam LaPorta one-on-one,
12:25who has been unstoppable, is impressive.
12:27And he just brings that veteran personality and presence to that linebacker group
12:31that could use some help, especially with Malcolm Rodriguez being out right now.
12:36More pressure flushing Burrow out.
12:39He needed to get to the 40, and it looks like he's got it.
12:44First down for the Bengals over halfway through the first quarter here.
12:47You know, Kelvin Shepard's defense here, too, is the D coordinator for the Lions.
12:51It's going to be interesting to see if they play more nickel coverage this year.
12:56Yeah, they were definitely a heavy base team last year,
12:58meaning four down linemen, three linebackers, and only four defensive backs.
13:03I spoke with Kelvin Shepard earlier today, and he said we're going to be more multiple.
13:07We want to throw different fronts.
13:08We want to throw more different coverages, more exotic looks at the offenses that we face.
13:13Burrow throwing short and a catch for Andre Yosivas out of Honolulu, the Bengals' number three receiver.
13:20And going back to Kelvin Shepard, we're not going to see that in the preseason.
13:24You're not obviously going to tip your hand and put all your cards on the table for teams to start
13:27scouting you.
13:28The preseason's more about let's get our guys in as many one-on-one situations.
13:32We want to see who can go out there and compete.
13:34But I know Kelvin Shepard going into year two, he said,
13:36I'm so much more comfortable, I know the guys better, right?
13:39I've got a full year under my belt now, and I just want to throw as much at them as
13:44they can handle.
13:44He said, we've got a tremendous group of smart, high football IQs in that room
13:50that the more we throw at them, the more they can handle, the more dangerous you're going to be on
13:53the field.
13:53Yeah, it feels like we could see some more wrinkles this year.
13:56Positive gain again for the Bengals, pushing four on this drive, the second for the starters.
14:02And Joe Burrow, Trevor Nowoski in on the tackle.
14:05Got to use the towel somehow, it's really starting to come down.
14:09Yeah, it is starting to sprinkle a little bit.
14:10And I also asked Kelvin the difference between, some coaches like being in the booth,
14:14some guys like being on the field.
14:16I said, what's your preference?
14:17Obviously, you've been a field guy.
14:18He said, look around the field every day in practice.
14:20That's where I coach the guys.
14:21That's where I can look at them in the eyes and have a discussion.
14:24So why would I do anything different on game day?
14:26He loves being down on that sideline and feeling the energy and feeling the emotion of his guys.
14:31I think that gives him a lot of energy as well.
14:33Now, Burrow is looking deep, checks it short to Piran.
14:37He's always been a dangerous receiver over the course of his career.
14:41Played for five NFL teams, spending the most time in Cincinnati.
14:46And Detroit trying to bend but not break here as Cincinnati is into Detroit territory.
14:51Yeah, and you know another guy that a lot of eyes are going to be on,
14:53and this rake straw switching his numbers to number two.
14:56Obviously, a pretty high pick a couple years ago.
14:58Had a lot of bad luck.
15:00Just call it what it is with injuries.
15:02A guy that they're really counting on.
15:03He's kind of bouncing around a little bit between the slot outside.
15:06See what he can do at safety.
15:07Number two is a guy that I want to watch and see how he can compete as well.
15:11That was an immediate tackle, maybe for a loss of one.
15:18Man, that play had no chance.
15:23Man, that was impressive.
15:25And another guy who's played a lot of football for this team,
15:28Nawoski was in there.
15:29Makai Wingo was in there.
15:30And that's just read and react,
15:32especially Nawoski's a guy who's played a lot of outside linebacker,
15:35defensive end, pass rush.
15:36Let's see what he can do at the second level.
15:38Read and react, right?
15:39Read the run, get downhill, make the tackle.
15:41That was a perfect play there by 53, Trevor Nawoski.
15:45Third down.
15:47Burroughs standing in.
15:48Got hit late.
15:49Got it off, but over.
15:52Some major pressure.
15:57That was an impressive rush.
16:00Eric O'Neal, just the speed rush.
16:03Getting the hands of the left tackle, Orlando Brown off of him.
16:07Putting the pressure on.
16:09Man, that is a big-time rush against Orlando Brown.
16:12He's no bum, man.
16:13He's been around the league for a long time.
16:15If you can make some plays like that,
16:16especially in those gotta-have-it moments,
16:18the third downs, right?
16:20That's a big play.
16:22Bangles came up with a sack with Hassanine.
16:25Got the pressure there to force a 56-yard try from McPherson.
16:31It's been pretty darn good from 50-plus over the course of his career.
16:35And he hit it no problem.
16:36Better a time, but, man, they're counting on him big time.
16:40Can't say enough about it.
16:41He is one explosive player, to say the least.
16:44Got Raheem Blackshear on the return here past the 30-yard line.
16:48And the third drive of the Lions offense coming up.
16:51Gibbs has been so productive going into his fourth year now.
16:55T.J., what makes him great?
16:57First of all, his speed.
16:58I think his speed is just-it's impossible.
17:01If you cover up that front seven, you get to the linebacker,
17:04you get him one-on-one with any defense.
17:07He's going to have a lot of fun when the regular season starts,
17:09trying to figure out how many unique ways he can get the ball into gives his hand.
17:13You mentioned Hassanine.
17:14You just saw him go to the sideline.
17:16Play action, Altmaier.
17:17First read not there.
17:18Dumps it down to Saylor.
17:20Scampers down the sideline.
17:21And the Lions are moving.
17:24Great protection.
17:25Nice play action pass.
17:27Doesn't happen unless those big guys up front are giving you some time.
17:30And that's just a really nice job.
17:32And what I love there about Luke Altmaier,
17:34first read wasn't there.
17:35Second read wasn't there.
17:36Okay, what do I do?
17:37Do I scramble?
17:37That's what a lot of young quarterbacks tend to do when they get in the NFL.
17:41Use your feet.
17:42Let's run.
17:42Just give you a check down, right?
17:44Keep this offense moving in the forward progression.
17:47Find your running back.
17:48Let him go get the yards.
17:49That's a really nice job by Luke Altmaier.
17:51Don't fake it again.
17:52Planting his space for Jackson Meeks.
17:54He converted from wide receiver to tight end this year.
17:58And another chunk game.
18:00And another simple little play action.
18:02Just a bootleg.
18:03Fake the run on the inside.
18:05Hey, we just got a first down.
18:06Everybody's thinking, hey, they're probably going to run the ball.
18:08Starting to rain a little bit here.
18:10Drew Petsing says, uh-uh, we're going to hit you with another bootleg.
18:12Give our quarterback an easy read, easy throw.
18:15And Jackson Meeks, he's a guy, like you mentioned, switching over to tight end.
18:18Coming a long way.
18:19We know what he can do catching the ball as a former receiver.
18:22He can continue to add tools to his toolbox when it comes to the run game and blocking defense events,
18:27man.
18:27He's got a real chance to help his team out as well.
18:30After a couple big plays in a row, short game with Sailors, Drew Petsing coming from Arizona.
18:36He's so detail-oriented, and that's what the Lions love about him.
18:39No doubt.
18:40And I think that when we talked to Coach Campbell yesterday, he said, look, the most important relationship to me
18:45has always been the play caller and your quarterback.
18:47You have to be in unison.
18:48He said Jared Goff, Drew Petsing are exactly what each other needs.
18:52They're both so smart, high football IQ.
18:55They challenge each other.
18:56Okay, this is good.
18:57How can we make it better?
18:59I love that he's standing on the sidelines, too.
19:01Like we mentioned with Kelvin Shepard being on the sideline, making adjustments down there with the guys.
19:06It makes so much of a difference rather than sitting up in the booth on a phone.
19:10Hey, send this guy a message.
19:11When you can go see the guys in person, make adjustments, talk to the guys, get a feel of what
19:16your offense is doing.
19:17Hey, maybe some adjustments we need to make.
19:18I think that is such a big advantage.
19:20So it's good to see him.
19:21I know he said he might mix it up a little bit this preseason, but good to see him down
19:24on the sideline with the guys.
19:26Third down after the catch for Conklin.
19:28Seeing the foundation of what Drew Petsing is building this year.
19:32His fourth season as an offensive coordinator.
19:36Lions one for two on third down tonight.
19:42Kai Robichaux is stopped.
19:45And it looks like the Lions will try to even it up on fourth down just past the 30.
19:50Yeah, and that played just a little inside zone.
19:53Tried to pick up probably two or three yards.
19:55But I was going to say, I wouldn't expect anything different from Dan Campbell in the preseason.
20:00Fourth and short, keeping his offense on the field.
20:03Nice shot by Cincinnati's defense, just kind of clogging that thing up.
20:05And if I get into offense here, Luke Altmaier, maybe go hard count.
20:08Maybe see if he can draw a free five yards from that defense.
20:12Why not go for it?
20:13It's Dan Campbell's M.O.
20:14They are Altmaier, slant, incomplete.
20:19He's looking for Tesla.
20:22Yeah.
20:24It was good coverage.
20:26Tight coverage.
20:27Good competitive 50-50 ball.
20:30I think, again, Tesla, that's probably one.
20:33If he's getting to the sideline, I know it's raining.
20:35I know that ball's probably wet.
20:37Hits him right in the hands.
20:38Yep, he's going to want that one back.
20:40And took a little shot there in the head.
20:42Hopefully he pops up and he's okay.
20:44But I like that from Altmaier.
20:46He just hits that back foot.
20:47Hey, trust your guy.
20:48Give him a chance to go make a play.
20:50Tesla might have to take another peek at those gloves.
20:53I know sometimes when it starts to rain and get wet, they become less sticky.
20:57He's going to be upset with that one.
20:58But it's good delivery.
20:59Good protection up front.
21:00Another good drive.
21:01Unfortunately, they couldn't find a way to get some points.
21:03Altmaier looks really good.
21:04He's been accurate.
21:05And he's been exactly what Coach said.
21:07Find your first read.
21:08Don't get – keep your poise, right?
21:11You're going to take some hits.
21:13There's the first plows from Joe Flacco.
21:16Fans wanted a flag, but the Bengals are on to the second stringers now.
21:20And the 41-year-old quarterback who is still slinging it.
21:23Good for him.
21:24Good for him.
21:24Still find a way to collect a paycheck.
21:26Good for Flacco.
21:28And he's – he's had a guy that's – man, he's had a heck of a career.
21:31Obviously, winning the Super Bowl.
21:33And let's take a look at – we're watching Ennis Raikstra here.
21:35Going back a couple drives.
21:36That's good coverage, and that's exactly what the coaches want to see.
21:40Fight through the hands, right?
21:41The receivers always catch the ball.
21:43They're going to try to high-point it.
21:44As soon as they try to tuck it into their body, get in that little V, they call it, right
21:47between the hands.
21:48Goal ball is down.
21:51White Coe going down for it.
21:5319th year at all.
21:54Even in the preseason.
21:57Still got the guts.
21:59He's still doing it.
22:00And he just – yeah, he had a – him and Tesla both.
22:03Then he gets – he gets some – and you practice this, right?
22:06You can't simulate rain, obviously.
22:07But coaches will dunk the balls in water and these big chugs.
22:12Because you're going to have to play in the element sometimes.
22:14So, Isaac Tesla will feel a little better.
22:16It even happens to 41-year-olds, too, that have a lot of experience in this league.
22:22We're going to get the end of the quarter here.
22:24Yeah, just don't jump off sides.
22:27And they don't.
22:29It's the end of the first quarter.
22:31And as Raikstra makes a nice play, they get a loss of six.
22:34Lions defense set up well to start the second quarter.
22:38We've seen some positives from Luke Altmaier.
22:40One quarter down, preseason game number one.
22:43And prove to your coaches, prove to your teammates, prove to the evaluators that, you know,
22:47you're the guy that they drafted in the second round a couple years ago.
22:50Joe Flacco, third and long.
22:52Bengals are going to pick it up.
22:54Colby Young, rookie fourth rounder out of Georgia.
22:58And the Bengals are moving now.
23:01Gain of 20.
23:03And just unfortunate disappointment, especially on third and long.
23:07And that's a time where, man, if you're a defensive line,
23:10they started to get up a little bit of late pressure.
23:12But the coverage was just a little bit too far off to give Joe Flacco a veteran quarterback.
23:16Just that extra second in that pocket to be able to find his receiver for that first down.
23:20Year 19, he's seen it all.
23:22Under center this time for Flacco.
23:24First down, the 44.
23:29Don't play action.
23:31Flacco will chuck it to no one.
23:34Let's go to Patty for more on Raikstra.
23:36Well, guys, before Ennis Raikstra went to college, he made a promise to his mom that he would get his
23:42degree.
23:42He said it was something he wanted to do for her because she didn't get to go to college.
23:46So last year, while he was rehabbing his shoulder injury, he fulfilled his promise.
23:51Raikstra got an internship in Wayne State's athletic department
23:54to complete the last requirement he needed in order to graduate from Mizzou.
23:59He was working with alumni relations, handling fundraising and donors, NIL stuff.
24:04And, guys, even the mascot at one point, he told me he needed to do something positive
24:09while training and rehabbing and now back out on the field this season.
24:12He's feeling eager.
24:13And he said, I've got to step up big this year.
24:17You heard there was an intentional ground in there.
24:19But the mascot?
24:21That's a team player.
24:23No doubt that is.
24:24And good for Ennis Raikstra to fulfill his promise that he made, you know,
24:29to the family to go back and make sure he finished and got his degree.
24:32That's a great story.
24:34Keep his eye on him.
24:36Second and long.
24:36Probably going to get a pass.
24:37One-on-one on the outside.
24:40Flacco looking sideline.
24:42And it was Raikstra's way.
24:44Still be third and long.
24:45The catch for Yossi Vosch.
24:48And Ennis, at that time, just he acted like he was going to play a little bit of tight man.
24:52Backed off.
24:54You could tell maybe he thought he had some help on the outside.
24:56And that's something that Coach Campbell kind of mentioned.
24:58I want to see not only from the offensive line, but that secondary.
25:01Understand where you've got to funnel guys to, right?
25:04Ennis Raikstra, at that time, playing outside corner.
25:06I know it's tough when you bounce from inside, outside.
25:07But you've got to understand, hey, my job is to protect that side bind.
25:10And not a damaging play, but just one that I'm sure he wants to take a look at and learn
25:15from.
25:15He's matched up with Colby Young this time.
25:17Young has the catch.
25:19Looks like he's short.
25:20He is short by a yard.
25:23We'll see if the Bengals go for it on fourth down.
25:26We saw the Lions do that on their last drive.
25:29And let's see.
25:30Did he secure the catch with two feet?
25:32Ah, that's close.
25:35Maybe by the time he secure the ball.
25:38Let's see.
25:40Yeah, I'm juggled.
25:41I don't think it's a deckhanding.
25:44Or a designated.
25:45Yeah, we're saying that's a head of challenge.
25:47We'll take a look at that.
25:48It doesn't look like they will.
25:51Going for it.
25:52Handoff, Taj Brooks.
25:55Closing ahead for the first down.
25:59And officially, yes, a first for Cincinnati.
26:04And just enough there from Cincinnati's offensive line just to give that running back just enough space to pick up
26:12a couple yards.
26:14And it's right strong.
26:15I mean, you're going to learn from those last two plays.
26:17That second down, that third down.
26:18Pretty similar routes.
26:19I think maybe if you're thinking, hey, don't flip the hips so fast.
26:23Maybe stay a little bit more square to that wide receiver.
26:25You put yourself in better position to start guarding those out routes.
26:29Right back to Brooks.
26:31And the 2026 Detroit Lions season is almost here.
26:35Preseason game number one tonight.
26:36Limited single-game tickets are still available for all home games.
26:39To view the full schedule and book your seats at Ford Field, visit DetroitLions.com slash tickets.
26:46How about the Lions faithful?
26:48Making it down to pay court.
26:49Even in preseason games, still a lot of blue out there.
26:53It's incredible.
26:54Even traveling with this team for the last five years and seeing the support that the fans give on the
26:58road is always.
26:59It gives you a little bit of adrenaline.
27:01When you go on the road, a hostile environment, you see so many fans there to cheer you on.
27:05Got a screen set up here for Brooks.
27:08A nice game for a first down.
27:10Undercut by Raikstra.
27:11And he's slow to get up, and that's not what you want to see.
27:16I know he went low.
27:17Looked like he maybe took a shot to the shoulder.
27:23Oh, man, that's just not what you want to see.
27:26And it's Raikstra.
27:27That's unfortunate.
27:27And he's going to take one more look at it.
27:30He's even told.
27:31He's in pain.
27:32Take a look at this replay here.
27:35One-on-one.
27:36Goes low.
27:37And looked like he caught an elbow to the head there.
27:39Hopefully he pops up so good.
27:43I think it's – I don't want to guess, but the fact that he's still on the sideline getting checked
27:47out
27:47instead of going up to the tunnel, maybe you start to get some feeling back on that shoulder,
27:51and hopefully he's all right.
27:54He's a big part of this defense that Kelvin Shepard's trying to rebuild,
27:57especially that secondary of some of the injuries that they have.
27:59And much like the offensive line, bringing in a lot of veterans,
28:02bringing in a lot of guys that can play multiple spots that create as much competition as you can.
28:06Well, I think that's a big question about this preseason fans are interested about,
28:09is what will the depth in the secondary look like?
28:13And you mentioned it.
28:14They're already thin.
28:15Yeah, they are.
28:16And we already know that Coach has been honest about Brian Branch and Kirby Joseph.
28:19They're probably on similar timelines, which might not be until October,
28:24if what you're hearing from Coach is correct.
28:27But you bring in veterans like Chuck Clark and Roger McCreary,
28:31Christian Isian, who's played a lot of football.
28:32Those guys got to step up in.
28:34Second down, Flacco right through the hands of Brooks.
28:38Rolling on the field to incomplete.
28:40Incomplete.
28:42It'll set up third and short.
28:44Thomas Harper was there to chase it down.
28:46Third year man out of Notre Dame.
28:49Thomas Harper, as you mentioned, a guy who had to step up a lot last year,
28:52especially with Kirby Joseph and Brian Branch going down,
28:54had to play a lot of snaps for this defense.
28:56And showed a lot of really good things.
28:58Really started to earn that trust of the coaches to go out there,
29:02be in the right spot, communicate, play that kind of center field position, right?
29:07Trust your teammates.
29:08Go out there and make plays.
29:10And Thomas Harper's a guy, especially we just talked about Branch and Kirby being out
29:13for a little bit.
29:14He's going to have to step up.
29:15Another faulty snap.
29:17Preseason football at its finest.
29:19Lions have got it.
29:22We're still going.
29:24Woof.
29:25Bad snap.
29:26I don't know if it was a bad handoff.
29:28Bad snap.
29:29And Milch just lost it.
29:30And the rookie, Keith Abney, comes up with it.
29:33Oh, man, you'll take him.
29:34Any way you can get him, you'll take him.
29:36Joe Flacco rolled.
29:38I don't know if that was his design play, but Roman kicked it up.
29:40Oh, and he needed himself and popped it up.
29:43Look, you take a turnoff, do what you can, especially down in the red zone.
29:49For Skelter, Keith Abney, a fumble recovery.
29:52It's still Luke Altmyer out there.
29:55Well, into the second quarter.
29:58Jacob Saylor's the back.
29:59Altmyer, pressure, flag, throws it away.
30:03Just before the pressure got home.
30:08Yeah, probably in the area of holding.
30:17Holding.
30:17Offense number 71.
30:19Half the distance to the goal.
30:21It's first down.
30:22Yeah.
30:24Miles Frazier.
30:25Miles Frazier over there.
30:26Gets beat to the inside.
30:27Just lunged a little bit.
30:29And any time you get that hand, you can see when your feet are beat,
30:32that's when they're going to call the holding.
30:34It's not necessarily where your hands are.
30:36But if your hands are outside of the body frame
30:38and your feet are waving to the other side, you're going to get called.
30:41Well, that time looked like maybe a three-step drop.
30:43I think that's why Frazier was setting so aggressively
30:45and the coverage was there.
30:46And Altmyer just really didn't have anywhere to go with that football.
30:52Sets up first and 16.
30:55Balls down again.
31:02And several fumbles here in the first half with light rain continuing.
31:08And the Bengals have it.
31:11Yeah, and that's, you know, like I said, you try to practice this.
31:16You try to practice the wet ball drills, anything you can.
31:19Center quarterback exchange, quarterback running back exchange.
31:23And that, yeah, that was on Luke Ballmire.
31:25Just lost the ball before he got the sailors.
31:28Man, man, that's just such a bad part of the field to turn it over,
31:32especially after you just had a takeaway to keep points off the board
31:35from that Cincinnati offense.
31:37Just got to start hitting both teams.
31:40Have to start handling the elements a little bit better.
31:42Because this, I mean, we got a little mist here.
31:45It's nothing.
31:46You're going to play games that are going to be a whole lot worse than this.
31:50And it's going to be a discussion over there with the coaches
31:52and the quarterback, I'm sure.
31:56Cincinnati's already won eight more plays than Detroit.
32:00Handed off Brooks.
32:03And Eeks just inside of the five after the fumble recovery
32:06from the SEC Defensive Player of the Year at A&M last year, Cassius Howell.
32:11And Cincinnati's knocking on the door.
32:13Hold him to a field goal here.
32:14Major win.
32:15Well, huge win.
32:16Yeah, huge win.
32:17And that's the one thing that Kelvin Shepard, I'm sure,
32:20really wants to see from this defense right now, right?
32:23You're sitting just inside the five-yard line.
32:25Probably going to get another run, try to get closer to that goal line.
32:28But you're going to get one-on-one coverage on the outside.
32:30That's what always happens, especially when you get down here.
32:33And if this defense can come up with another huge stop,
32:35that's got to be a huge boost for Kelvin Shepard
32:38and those guys sitting over there.
32:40Second goal for the four.
32:43Flacco throwing wide.
32:44And a Cincinnati touchdown.
32:47And it's the rookie out of Texas, Jack Endres.
32:51And the Bengals expand it to a two-score lead.
32:55Yeah, and I was wrong.
32:56I called for a run play.
32:58A little play action.
32:59Sneaked the tight end out on the back side.
33:02Everybody's eyes got stuck in the backfield, expecting a run play.
33:06Savvy Joe Flacco says, uh-uh.
33:08A little play action here.
33:09Dump it out to the flat by my tight end.
33:11Get in home.
33:12Man, that's just a bummer.
33:14Defense has been playing really good.
33:15Not their fault, but you had a bad exchange there with Altmaier and Sailors.
33:21But, like I said, normally when you turn it over and set your own 20, 15-yard line,
33:27it generally doesn't lead to good results.
33:30Yeah, seven yards left to work with for Cincinnati.
33:32And now a 10-0 lead for the Bengals in the preseason opener.
33:38Seen some positives from Luke Altmaier in the defense, but it's still Bengals 10, Lions 0.
33:43It's going to be Josh Dobbs coming out for the Detroit offense.
33:47After this, Dominic Lovett on the return.
33:51And Lovett spun down to shy of 30.
33:54Yep, and here comes Josh Dobbs, and this is what Coach said.
33:57Hey, look, we don't want to put too much on Dobbs' plate yet.
33:59He's only been here for a couple cup of coffees, right?
34:03Four days, five days, whatever it is.
34:05But we still need to see what we got with him.
34:07And he's been in this, not necessarily the system with Drew Petsing,
34:12but he's been with Dan Campbell.
34:13He understands the verbiage and how this team is coached.
34:16So it would be good to see him get an opportunity here to see if he can make some plays.
34:20He's made plays a lot of different places in his NFL career.
34:23Nine different teams.
34:25He'll hand it off on first down.
34:26It is Sailors once again.
34:28Sailors is going to get most of the carries in the preseason with Baki, Pacheco,
34:34both injured and Gibbs not playing tonight.
34:36Yeah, and he's earned it.
34:37And Jacob Sailors, we mentioned earlier in the show,
34:40where he kind of came out of nowhere last year,
34:42was probably considered a camp body, right?
34:45And then just couldn't stop making plays and earned himself a roster spot.
34:50And obviously enough trust to keep this going.
34:52And that's going to be important, too, is who can you find behind, we expect, Gibbs and Pacheco.
34:57That's going to be a big position battle as well.
35:02Sailors again, and he spins for the first down.
35:05But going back to Josh Dobbs, a great quote he had a few years ago when he's with Arizona.
35:10He was the starter there.
35:11Ends up getting traded to Minnesota after Kirk Cousins tore his Achilles.
35:14And a great comeback went against Atlanta.
35:16He said, people don't care about your circumstance.
35:19They want to see you succeed in the circumstance that you're given.
35:22And he's kind of made a career out of that.
35:25Yeah, he has.
35:25And he's, look, you don't just roll out of bed and go play nine, ten years in the NFL.
35:31You have to have some skill, which Josh Dobbs does.
35:34And I know that even when he was here a couple years ago with the Lions,
35:37Dan Campbell said, man, we were so bummed because he got picked off our practice squad.
35:41He was a guy that he really loved and wanted to keep around and continue to develop.
35:44And they're happy to have him back.
35:45Play action, pressure, tips, incomplete.
35:50Oof, dangerous.
35:54It was intended for Thomas Gordon, the 25-year-old tight end out of Northwestern.
35:58Yeah, and a bit of a dangerous throw there.
36:00A little bit of pressure coming from Dobbs' backside.
36:03And it was almost a heck of a catch.
36:06It actually wasn't a terrible throw there from Josh Dobbs.
36:09It would have been a heck of a catch there.
36:13And it wasn't Tim.
36:14They just slipped out of his hand.
36:15No, it wasn't.
36:16And it just couldn't find a way to complete it.
36:18I think that was Thomas Gordon who's had himself a pretty nice camp as well.
36:22That would have been a heck of a catch.
36:24Second down, throwing it again on target this time to Dominic Lovett.
36:27Scoots ahead, first down.
36:29And that's just savvy quarterback play, Josh Dobbs.
36:32He knows he's going to have a free rusher on the side.
36:35Cincinnati brought a little bit of pressure inside.
36:37Left tackle has to come down and squeeze Larry Borum to take care of that pressure.
36:43He had a free rusher on the outside.
36:45Josh Dobbs, don't panic, right?
36:47Get the ball out of my hands.
36:48Understand where your outlet is going to be.
36:50That's just a savvy veteran play from a quarterback you've seen a lot in this league.
36:56Handed off Orobosho.
36:59One of the three available running backs for the Lions tonight.
37:07And another guy worth watching still playing out there is Christian Mahogany in a battle, right,
37:14with Miles Frazier.
37:15And when Juice Scruggs gets healthy, sounds like he's not going to be too far up.
37:20I know he's also going to be in that center competition as well with Seth McLaughlin.
37:25When he gets back, that's going to be interesting to watch over the next couple weeks,
37:28especially with Cade Mays expected to be out, you know,
37:31for at least maybe the first month of the season.
37:34Yeah, center's been the hot topic this week.
37:36Yeah, for Detroit, decent protection.
37:39Dobbs dancing out of it, showing off the legs.
37:41Dobbs down the sideline, stayed in, and tumbles for a first, an extra tumble to boot.
37:49Oh, hey, you don't need to know everything in the playbook if you've got wheels like this.
37:53Maneuvered in the pocket, dodging the rush.
37:54Pretty good protection, like you said, Jack.
37:56Finds a way to still kind of tiptoe.
37:59Nice little somersault there on the sideline to pick up the first down.
38:03No, no, once again, veteran quarterback, hey, it's not there.
38:06Let me see if I can make a play, and Josh Dobbs, he's got that sneaky speed, right?
38:11Not the first time we've seen that.
38:12He was an aerospace engineering major at Tennessee.
38:14What's that called?
38:15Central 4th or something like that?
38:18Sailors bouncing, flag behind the play.
38:21It might negate the big game.
38:25Yeah, that usually means one thing.
38:27We all know.
38:29Holding, offense number 73, 10-yard penalty.
38:32That's the first down.
38:35Let's go to Patty with more on Sailors.
38:39Break with the Lions.
38:40Jacob Sailors was on multiple practice squads in the UFL, also in the UFL,
38:45and then at one point was selling roofing, siding, and window estimates.
38:50He told me he knew he wanted to chase football, but he needed money to support his family.
38:54So he went on Indeed and got a job while still chasing his dream.
38:58And he got emotional.
39:00He said it was a really hard time for him, and he learned a lot about believing in himself,
39:04being a father, a husband.
39:05And in that 2024 UFL season, he had the most rushing yards of any running back,
39:10led the league in scoring, and ultimately was able to quit selling estimates
39:14and was picked up by the Lions in 2025.
39:18Incredible story, Pat.
39:19He got another flag.
39:20Love it once again on the catch.
39:22Down to 35.
39:26Man, back in the secondary.
39:28Legal contact, maybe?
39:34If they can make up the right.
39:35Legal contact.
39:36Defense number 21.
39:37Five-yard penalty from the previous spot.
39:40Automatic first down.
39:42Lions will take it.
39:42I think they might have missed a face mask on the end of that previous play.
39:45Yeah, they did.
39:46The take of Sailors.
39:47Probably should have offset on the hold on Christian Mahogany right at the end here.
39:52I mean, that's pretty clear.
39:53Yeah.
39:54And you know what?
39:55That's so different because it used to be maybe if you just accidentally grazed,
39:58it was a five-yard penalty, right?
39:59Now it's all just any time you make contact.
40:02It's automatic 15.
40:03Not complaining.
40:05Not complaining.
40:06Good job there by Josh Dobbs and the offense to at least get back on track here
40:11and get a new set of downs.
40:13Got to put some points on the board here, Jack.
40:14Yeah, they get the automatic first down.
40:16Went from first and 20 now to a fresh set of downs.
40:21And hand off to Robichaud this time.
40:24Signed with the Lions as an undrafted free agent last year, then got injured.
40:29And for 18 touchdowns over a couple of years at Boston College.
40:34You know, realistically with this running back group,
40:37Isaiah Pacheco comes in to replace David Montgomery as the number two back.
40:41But it feels like there's maybe an opportunity for more carries for a Sione Baku when he's healthy or a
40:47Jacob Saylor.
40:48Yeah, for sure.
40:49And we've seen that in the last couple of years with Dan Campbell's offense is you have to have three
40:54guys.
40:54We obviously know who's going to get the majority of the carries.
40:57Pacheco, if he can stay healthy and then find another guy to kind of spill and be a goal line,
41:01maybe short yardage.
41:02Just a little high there on that throw.
41:04But find another guy that can come in on the short yardage and the third downs that can kind of
41:08spill those other guys a little bit.
41:09And also, who can be a difference maker on special teams, right?
41:12If you're going to be that number three running back, whether it's Fahki, whether it's Sailors, whether it's Robichaud,
41:17whoever ends up winning that battle, what's really going to make the difference is how good can you be on
41:22the return game?
41:22How good can you be on the special teams to make an impact and make a difference in some of
41:28those hitting yardage plays
41:29that necessarily don't really get looked at as much as you do on offense?
41:33That's the reality of how you can stick on the roster.
41:36No doubt.
41:36If you're playing behind that guy that we just saw.
41:39Jameer Gibbs, pressure, dogs, down.
41:44The Lions are now one for four on third down.
41:48And that backs them all the way out to the 45 and right on the edge of Jake Bates' field
41:53goal range.
41:54And let's take a replay here of the offensive line.
41:57Just a little bit of pressure, stunt in the middle.
42:00Those are so hard to pick up.
42:02But it's awareness.
42:03You have to understand, hey, any time I get a second and long or third and long,
42:06the defense isn't probably just going to rush me one-on-one.
42:08They're going to try to get a stunt.
42:10They're going to try to feel where the center is sliding.
42:12Maybe find a weakness there.
42:15We really can't pinpoint that on one guy.
42:17It looked like Blake Miller maybe did a good job recovering,
42:19but let his guy get an edge.
42:21Really didn't give the quarterback a chance to step up.
42:23And like I said, that TT stunt just kind of swarmed Josh Dobbs in there for the sack.
42:29Jack Fox boots it away.
42:31And Charlie Jones with the fair catch.
42:33Jack Fox led the NFL fair catch as last year.
42:39And Dan Campbell's not happy about it.
42:41Let's take a look at the bottom of the screen here.
42:46Got tangled up.
42:47Yeah, trying to chuck in a little bit, trying to disengage and make sure you can still get downfield.
42:53And here the number looked like it might have been Thomas Harper.
42:55Yeah, it was Thomas Harper.
42:58And penalties are frustrating, right?
43:00And coaches understand that the physical penalties, the competitive penalties, we can teach.
43:05We can deal with that.
43:06We can, hey, just get your hands in a better place, right?
43:09I think the ones that really drive them nuts are the offsides, the false starts, the legal formations.
43:14But, you know, it's hard to get mad at a guy that's trying to compete.
43:19At Alliance TV Network, we'd like to extend a sincere welcome to all of our affiliates in Michigan, Northwest Ohio.
43:26The crowd is playing for eight hours.
43:29I'm an anxious flyer, my friend.
43:33You've tolerated it for so many years.
43:36Josh Johnson in the game for the Bengals.
43:39Got a drop.
43:40So we mentioned the trip to Germany for Detroit.
43:45I'm in Ross St. Brown's mother, Miriam, grew up in Germany, so he's very excited about that.
43:49Regular season start.
43:50Easy schedule, so to say, right?
43:52That's just, that's so untrue.
43:53There's going to be teams last year that were good, that are going to be bad.
43:55There's teams that last year were going to be bad, they're going to be good.
43:57So you've got to treat them all the same.
43:59But definitely looking on paper looks favorable for the Lions early in the season.
44:03Third down, going deep.
44:04Broken up.
44:06Side by side, it's Nick Whiteside.
44:09He's made so many plays in training camp and his first big one tonight.
44:14Man, that's impressive, and it's third and long.
44:16You know you're probably going to get a shot at some point.
44:18Look at the sticky coverage.
44:19Make sure, you know what I love there?
44:21Didn't hold the receiver.
44:22Got beat a little bit with his feet.
44:24Anytime you get your head back like Whiteside just did, give yourself a chance to make a play.
44:28There's so many times where you see defensive backs where the ball's underthrown,
44:32and they just run into the receiver.
44:34If you just turn your head, just turn your head and make a play on the ball.
44:38And, hey, Bart Scott, our producer, just said it's a reason why he was one of our players to watch.
44:42He's been impressive.
44:43That's a great play there from Whiteside.
44:45Awesome play.
44:46Love it on the return.
44:47Go to the 35.
44:49He was one of your players to watch.
44:50He was.
44:51He called it.
44:51And look, and I can't really take credit for it because you can't go without talking to any coaches
44:56or players that have just been raving about Nick Whiteside all preseason, all training camp.
45:01It doesn't matter who he's going against.
45:03Amin Ross St. Brown.
45:04Some great coverages against Jamison Williams, right?
45:07Be it having a knack for the football, finding the football.
45:10Sometimes, you know what, even a pass deflection like that, who cares that you didn't get the interception?
45:15It's third down.
45:16You get off the field.
45:17Give your offense the ball back.
45:18Give a chance to get down there and score some points and start to close this game up a little
45:22bit.
45:26Let's see if the Lions can capitalize on offense now.
45:30Now, Dobbs back out there for his second drive.
45:34Play action, Sailors.
45:36He has a million touches tonight.
45:38And he's brought down to 40.
45:40Another position battle to keep our eye on brought to us by Frankenmuth Insurance.
45:45Left guard.
45:46Yeah, it's going to be important.
45:47Obviously, we know that the center battle is going to happen here once you Scruggs get healthy.
45:51But Christian Mahogany, right there, he's playing a lot tonight.
45:53And he's, you know, in his third year, started a lot of games for them last year.
45:57Miles Frazier, the same.
45:59Had to come in for some spot duty as well last year.
46:02I look at it as Christian Mahogany should be that guy if he can continue to take that step.
46:07But anytime you have healthy competition at any spot in the roster, it's going to raise everybody's level of play
46:14up a little bit.
46:14So, it's going to take another couple weeks.
46:17Yeah, not a great run there.
46:18But it's going to take another couple weeks.
46:20Last year, they aren't doing joint practices this year.
46:24And he feels, at this point, teams in a better spot than his time last year.
46:31Josh Dobbs, some pressure and overthrows.
46:34Lucky Jackson, maybe a flag.
46:36There it is.
46:37Looked like some early contact.
46:41Yeah, I don't think the pass interference, defense, number 37.
46:46Balls placed at the spot of the foul.
46:48Automatic first down.
46:50P.J. Jules.
46:52Former Southern Illinois Saluki.
46:54Yeah, he never even turned his head.
46:55Watch him down here in the bottom left corner covering Jackson.
46:58He just had no intention of playing the football.
47:02But this is, look, this is a situation, Jack, that coaches love.
47:06Two-minute drill.
47:07Situational football, right?
47:09Let's see what the guys can do when you're in those gotta-have-it mentality type drives.
47:14And they're going to get a lot of great evaluation off this drive right here.
47:17Dobbs will keep it again.
47:19Guns it all over the middle.
47:20Lovett can't hang on.
47:23Lovett's been a frequent target tonight, but it's third down.
47:27And it looked like it was catchable, right?
47:31Lovett maybe just a nitpick, maybe just a little bit on the back shoulder.
47:34But, man, that's one that you've got to have.
47:37I'm sure Scotty Montgomery's over there, the wide receiver coach on the sideline saying,
47:40come on, guys, we've got to help the quarterbacks out a little bit.
47:42He's giving us those 50-50 balls chance to make them.
47:45Haven't made a lot of them yet.
47:47Got to start making them, especially in these two-minute drives where defense probably knows you're going to be throwing
47:51the ball a lot.
47:52Suck it down, rather.
47:55Five different lines of the catch tonight on the ground.
47:58What a cut from Sailors.
48:00Sailors stays on his feet.
48:01Almost broke it all the way.
48:06He has got some boogie.
48:09Yeah, great blocking up front.
48:10Nice job on the double teams.
48:11And Sailors just making a man miss right in the hole, putting his foot in the ground, bouncing back to
48:16the inside.
48:17Probably a half a step from taking that thing all the way to the house.
48:20And that's just incredible vision.
48:21It looked like there was nothing there for Sailors.
48:24Defense was slanting.
48:25Linebacker came unblocked.
48:27And he said, you know what?
48:28I don't care.
48:29I'm going to make one guy miss.
48:30I'm going to get downfield.
48:31Came up with Gimp in a little bit on that play.
48:33But that's a heck of a run there from Sailors.
48:35And we'll get another flag.
48:37To a race.
48:38What was a nice game?
48:39High Robichaud.
48:40And that's, unfortunately, means one thing.
48:45Holding.
48:46Offense number 71.
48:48Ten-yard penalty.
48:49It's first down.
48:50Second penalty on Miles Frazier tonight.
48:54He's kind of looking around like, what?
48:57Me?
48:58And it's just kind of finished in there.
49:02I know.
49:02Yeah, Sailors, he definitely got shooken up a little bit, shaken up a little bit at the end of that
49:06run.
49:06That little ankle tackle.
49:08Man, you don't want to see that.
49:11The body language is encouraging, though.
49:13It seems to be active and talking.
49:15Yeah, I agree.
49:16But it's just, man, he's just starting to get humming a little bit, right?
49:20Five penalties, 46 yards, a penalty yardage for Detroit tonight.
49:26With some of the turnovers and those penalty yards, they just shot themselves in the foot every time they've started
49:31to get a drive going.
49:32And the first timeout used by Dan Campbell with a minute four to play in the first half.
49:37Yeah, we talked back.
49:39Oh, it's on Cincinnati, actually.
49:40Yeah, Cincinnati.
49:41I think they, hey, Zach Taylor's probably saying the same thing.
49:43We'd love to get a stop and get the ball back and get some two-minute reps for our team
49:47as well.
49:48So why not?
49:49Why not try to call timeout, save as much time as you can?
49:53And, man, just, you talked about it, though.
49:55One of our keys, right?
49:56Play clean.
49:56No disciplinary penalties, nothing stupid.
50:01And really haven't seen much of that, but a couple holdings that have cost them, a couple drop passes that
50:06have cost them.
50:06And then the two turnovers, the interception that bounced off of Tesla's face and the missed exchange down inside around
50:1310-yard line.
50:14I've been the difference so far.
50:15Good news.
50:16Jacob Saylor's is back out there for Detroit now after he looked to be shaken up.
50:22Second at 19.
50:24Dobbs.
50:25It's loose.
50:27Pitches it, sideline, nothing there.
50:29Good coverage for Swayze.
50:30Bozeman was picked up off waivers in May from the Giants.
50:35And good coverage on the back, and I thought the offensive line did a pretty good job that time of
50:39protecting.
50:40Based off of Dobbs' drop back, looked like maybe that ball was supposed to come out after a three-step,
50:45maybe one of those five-to-seven-yard routes on the outside, and they had good coverage.
50:51Josh didn't like what he saw, and good job by using his feet, though, escaping that pocket a little bit
50:55as the pressure started to get to him, and making sure he didn't make a crucial mistake, especially
51:01at a part of the field where he used to come out with three points, right?
51:06Well, they'll play it for three here.
51:08He's blocking.
51:08He's setting up the screen, maybe more.
51:11Got the first down for now, but another flash.
51:16That was the ever-reliable Tom Kennedy making it happen.
51:21Holding.
51:22Offense number 71, 10 yards from the spot of the foul.
51:26Third down.
51:27You just hate to see that for Myles Frazier.
51:29And I didn't see it live, but especially on a play where the ball just gets out so fast,
51:35and I know you're trying to get to the outside, and yeah, just look at the right hand.
51:39That's the key right there, and I know he didn't hold it for long, but that's what the officials
51:44are looking at.
51:45Right hand on the back, on the back jersey.
51:48You have to be disciplined, especially any time you're out in space.
51:52You know you're outmatched when it comes to the athleticism.
51:54You're not a better athlete than a lot of these safeties or linebackers that you're out
51:57in space with, so you have to be very just technical with your hand placement.
52:03As soon as you start to feel them outside, hey, let it go.
52:06With this a chance to make a big play, you can't hurt the team.
52:09Third and 24, trying to get some of the yardage back.
52:13Curling side, Malik Cunningham, the old quarterback at Louisville,
52:16following Lamar Jackson, gets him inside of the 30, block at 43 seconds, and a timeout.
52:23Cincinnati took another timeout.
52:26But yeah, that's what we talked about.
52:27You know, we mentioned at the top of the show, Jack, clean football, right?
52:30I think that's been the story so far, and I think that's going to be Dan Campbell's message
52:34at halftime to his team.
52:36Hey, we've got to clean it up.
52:37We've got to clean it up.
52:38Way too many penalties, way too many mistakes.
52:40If you're Miles Frazier, look, you're a guy out there competing,
52:43and we mentioned him competing for that left guard spot, right?
52:48Unfortunately, you have a couple penalties,
52:49and our officials always seem to put an emphasis on the little things,
52:53especially in the preseason.
52:55But, man, that's been the story really for the whole team,
52:58not singling anybody out.
52:59A couple turnovers, a couple weird bounces.
53:01Defense has played actually pretty well.
53:03And I think Dan Campbell's going to tell his team,
53:05hey, we've got to sharpen up a little bit.
53:07We've got to tighten up.
53:09There's a field goal try 46 for Jake Bates,
53:12the former soccer star, turned kickoff specialist.
53:15He has been a revelation for the Lions.
53:18Oh, that's a flag.
53:19And guess what?
53:20Yeah.
53:21More laundry.
53:22That's the preseason.
53:25I'll tell you, if these guys get paid permission per flag,
53:28they're going to retire pretty soon here.
53:30Oh, boy.
53:32Is it this way against Miami last year in the preseason?
53:35Pretty much every preseason.
53:37That looks like it might be on the defense.
53:41Miss alignment.
53:42Maybe somebody covering up the long snapper,
53:44which you're not supposed to do.
53:46They're looking over to Detroit's sideline, I think,
53:48to ask Coach Campbell what he wants to do here.
53:53Illegal formation.
53:54Number 91 of the defense lined up over the center.
53:57It's a five-yard penalty.
53:59Replay.
54:00Fourth down.
54:01You called it.
54:02All right.
54:03I've been right on the penalty so far.
54:05I've been over two predicting runs and passes.
54:09Are they bringing offense back out here?
54:11Yes, they are.
54:12Okay.
54:13Fourth down.
