When OpenAI employees have a problem, they email a special address to see if Sam Altman will solve it immediately.

It’s called “friction.” And it has the power to supersede just about anything a team is doing.

Fortune’s Emily Forlini joined Ellie Austin and Fortune Daily to explain how OpenAI employees solve bottlenecks.

00:00It's this internal email address, friction at OpenAI.
00:03And when they have a bottleneck, a team is blocking them,
00:07the process isn't having the intended result,
00:09or even if they have an office-related issue,
00:11IT vending machines being low, or there's no parking spots,
00:15they can shoot their shot and email this friction at OpenAI,
00:19and the leadership team monitors that inbox,
00:21and they select the ones that they think need to be solved immediately,
00:26that are kind of like worthy of fixing and defensible.
00:28The expectation is that those teams will basically fall in line immediately and get it done.
00:35And do you have any gauge of how effective this process is?
00:38Yeah, it seems to be very effective in the sense that I did talk to somebody who had led a
00:43team
00:43and said on the receiving end of about a dozen orders to comply with frictions,
00:48he said it's pretty much just to drop everything, make it work now,
00:52to the point where his team had to build new technology to accommodate the change.
00:57Like there was a reason that they had blocked that other team,
01:01and they had to reprioritize their roadmap to work on this, as you called it, a friction,
01:06and the friction team will follow up and ask questions and make sure it gets done,
01:11which instills confidence in the employees because they feel like their needs are getting met,
01:16they're kind of being addressed.
01:17So we'll see you next time.
