Mali frees 82 soldiers held by militants, pardons French embassy official

Mali says 82 soldiers held captive since deadly attacks in April have been freed by armed groups, in a rare breakthrough as the country battles jihadist and rebel insurgencies. The junta also pardoned a French embassy official accused of spying and ordered his expulsion.

00:13Touareg-led Azawad Liberation Front, which claimed responsibility for the April 25 attacks.

00:32In a separate move, Junta leader Asimi Goita has pardoned a French embassy official accused
00:37of spying and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
00:41The government says the pardon does not overturn the conviction, but the official will be immediately
00:47expelled from Mali.
