00:09Last night, Margo McNeil resigned, describing the decision as tremendously difficult,
00:15but one made in the best interests of the Institute.
00:19I thought it was wonderful news.
00:20It does draw a line on a lot of speculation over the last few months,
00:24so I think it's a good outcome.
00:25Dr McNeil has been under mounting pressure.
00:28After revelations, she failed to disclose a misconduct investigation
00:33at her former employer, TAFE New South Wales.
00:36A Legislative Assembly inquiry found she actively misled CIT's board,
00:41and another probe criticised her as being deliberately obstructive and combative.
00:47Clearly, the reputation and Canberra's trust in CIT has been rattled by these events.
00:53The CIT board won't confirm whether it asked Dr McNeil to step down.
00:58She's been awarded a settlement package worth about $445,000.
01:04The Canberra Liberals say it's a disgrace.
01:08Meantime, the Institute is embarking on a voluntary redundancy program
01:12as it tries to slash about 10% off its budget.
01:16It's not clear to me why she's receiving a payout if this has been characterised as a resignation.
01:21A governance review into CIT is underway.
01:25If it is a public organisation, let's run it like one where it's sitting within a directorate
01:29and actually has the ministerial accountability and oversight that's required
01:34and the parliamentary scrutiny that comes with that.
01:36The government has an open mind as to what future governance arrangements at CIT looks like.
01:41The CIT board appointed an acting chief executive and deputy last week.
01:47What I want to try now is to steady that ship and to move it forward.
01:51To a place where student learning, not leadership sagas, takes priority.
