00:31Hello, everybody. It's Wednesday afternoon and another chance to just block out whatever the day has for you and just
00:37enjoy the escapism of the letters and numbers and some really good company. And I mean good company because this
00:43is the early throes of our champion of champions, the best players from over five years. Battle it out to
00:50win the big one. Cannot wait. Big day today in the world of mathematics.
00:54Is it? Rachel, yes it is because it's Isaac Newton's 380th birthday. People think about the law of gravitation but
01:02calculus, optics, the laws of motions, so many things connected to mathematics.
01:08Yeah, well, it wasn't my favourite. The thing I liked about uni was you start off, like your first year,
01:14you do all the old, old, old stuff. And then the longer you stay there, the more modern you get
01:18with the maths. So I was more into the quantum. There was Heisenberg and Bohr and Schrodinger. And they've got
01:25some kind of interesting backstories as well. I think Schrodinger was a bit of a lad, especially with the ladies.
01:30Got some, yeah, fruity tales to tell, I think.
01:32Do you really have a list of favourite mathematicians? There's some good ones and some boring ones, yeah. You've got
01:38to have a bit of personality with your maths.
01:40I've got one of those lists and you know where you are in mine. Third.
01:43Borderman again, Pipsman. No, she's fourth. Let's go to Dictionary Corner. Relatively speaking, I think our finest coupling, certainly in
01:52my time sitting on this chair, a natural philosopher in Susie Dent and one of the most down-to-ear
01:58stars you're ever likely to meet, Richard Osman.
02:03Right, another battle of the best right now in Countdown. We welcome back Ahmed Mohamed, who won Series 84 of
02:11Countdown. Nice to have you, my friend.
02:13It's good to be back. Thank you for having me.
02:15Good. Now, you are, it's a strange thing. It made me think of a story, actually. So you're like a
02:20devout Arsenal fan, right?
02:21Yeah, yeah, you could say that.
02:23But because of a company you work for, you worked at Spurs. What was that like?
02:26Yeah, no, I was working on the cover a bit. Yeah, I was. But honestly, half of Tottenham actually supports
02:32Arsenal.
02:34There's going to be a lot of angry tweets right now, I feel. But yeah, no, it's true.
02:39Well, you can ignore them because it's only football.
02:41No, I will. I will.
02:46That's how long ago it was for Channel 5. And it was Everton. I was really nervous. And I turned
02:52up so early, before any fan was near the ground. And I walked up to the gate. And the two
02:58security guards said, just turn around. And they lifted me by the elbows. Walked me out of Goodison and said,
03:04Mal down that way, lads.
03:05And burst out laughing. And I have to say, it was one of the best experiences I've ever had. That's
03:10real football, isn't it? Leave the rivalry on the pitch. Right. Well, listen, Ahmed, there's rivalry here today. It will
03:15be respectful, of course.
03:17And look who's back from Buddha's time, our beaten finalist in our last series. Ed Byrne! You all right?
03:23I'm great. It's great to be back, Colin.
03:25Lovely. What's been happening since the devastation of losing to Tom Stevenson? I suppose just sleepless nights, insomnia, therapy?
03:34Ah, you just get back up on the horse and start all over again. You know, great company with you.
03:40Ten past two every afternoon.
03:42Yeah. Well, listen, good luck to you both today. Let's find out who's on song. Ahmed and Edward.
03:49Here we go again. Ahmed, my friend, let's get some letters.
03:54Hello, Rachel.

05:07And Ed, same.
05:09Ooh, sanatives.
05:12Susie.
05:13So, Ahmed, yours is vanitas, we know as a noun, which is a still life painting, a 17th century
05:20Dutch genre.
05:22It's a noun.
05:22It doesn't say it's uncountable, so you can put the ES on.
05:26That's absolutely fine.
05:27And Ed, how are you spelling that?
05:28S-A-N-A-T-I-V-E-S.
05:31Oh, Ed, I'm so sorry.
05:33Sanative is there as an adjective meaning conducive to physical or spiritual health, but it's
05:38not there as a noun, I'm afraid.
05:39Sorry.
05:40So, Richard, you got a 10?
05:42Yeah, I wish we did.
05:43I mean, the standard keeps getting better and better.
05:45Last summer I went to Wimbledon, and you're so up close to, like, Djokovic and Nadal and
05:49people, and it's exactly the same thing, seeing these guys.
05:52No, we got savants and we were very happy about it for eight, but amazing playing.
05:56All right.
05:57Well, to change the serve, Ed, you're picking the letters.
05:59OK.
06:00Good afternoon, Rachel.
06:01Have a consonant, please.

07:02The six, Ahmed.
07:04Zeroed.
07:05And the seven.
07:06Rodeos.
07:06I'm afraid the plural is simply EOS, R-O-D-E-O-S.
07:11Sorry, Ed.
07:11Unlucky, Ed.
07:12Mm-hmm.
07:13Let's go to Dictionary Corner.
07:14Richard Osmond.
07:15Yeah, something no one at home is doing.
07:16Dozers.
07:17We had as well for six, but nothing better than that.
07:20Unless zoo seed is a word.
07:22What they feed the Tigers.
07:23All right.
07:24First numbers round of the day.
07:26What a start from Ahmed, our Series 84 champion.
07:29Let's get those digits.
07:30I think you know what I'm going to ask for.
07:33One large.
07:33I think you might be playing it safe now that you've got a 24-point lead.
07:36One large.
07:37Five.
07:37Not what Ed wants.
07:39Let's see.
07:40No, sometimes we get a challenge.

10:43Six.
10:43Ahmed?
10:44I'll try a seven.
10:45OK, what's a six, Ed?
10:47Sewage.
10:48Trying a seven.
10:49Ahmed?
10:49G-gores.
10:50G-gores.
10:51G-gores.
10:52I can tell by your expression it's in.
10:54It is in, yeah.
10:56It's another word for a bit of trumpery finery, really.
10:59So something that's really showy, but pretty useless.
11:02Richard, did you have it?
11:03I didn't have it.
11:04Susie did have it, so it's been very humble.
11:06Weirdly, it was in a book I read recently,
11:08an Agatha Christie book, G-g,
11:09and I wondered how it was pronounced.
11:11But I think it was, Julie, a little bit,
11:12some paraphernalia around the house,
11:14sort of on a mantelpiece.
11:15Yeah, little trinkets and that sort of stuff.
11:18G-gores or G-gores.
11:19Any more sevens?
11:20No.
11:21No, gauges for six.
11:22Nothing else.
11:23The best word in the dictionary gets Ahmed.
11:24Another precious seven points.
11:27And you're picking these letters.
11:28Can I have a consonant, please?
11:30You can indeed.
11:32Pete?
11:33And another.
11:35M.

12:32Eight.
12:33An Edward.
12:34An ace.
12:34Both with eights.
12:36Ahmed.
12:37Poematic.
12:38Red, same word.
12:39Poetical.
12:40Music to our ears.
12:41What have we got there, Suze?
12:42Happy?
12:42They just know the dictionary so well.
12:44They actually both mean the same thing.
12:46Yep, brilliant.
12:46Anything you say now, Richard, is going to sound like a limerick.
12:49Yes, isn't it, Justin?
12:50I was wondering about complete, as in the complete angler of the book.
12:53Angler, with the spelling E-A-T.
12:54Yeah, L-A-T.
12:55That's another eight.
12:56Well done.
12:56Very, very good indeed, Richard.
12:58Wonderful stuff.
12:59Right, 49 players, 18.
13:00We'll get to the numbers again, Edward.
13:03That's the first points you've scored in the letters, and it needed an eight, but another
13:07big ten on the numbers is the order of the day.
13:09So, off you go.
13:10Well, you know what's coming, Rachel.
13:12Four large ones, please.
13:13Four large, and you definitely need a bit of a challenge here.
13:16Let's see if we can find something interesting.
13:19Right, come on, numbers.
13:20We've got four.
13:21Four, and another four.
13:23Large ones, 100, 50, 25, 75.
13:26Can't do anything without a target, which is 765.
13:31765, numbers up.
14:03765, Ed.
14:05766.
14:06One away.
14:06Ahmed.
14:07766.
14:08One away, too.
14:09So, it'll be seven points each, if you're correct.
14:11Ed, off you go.
14:12OK, so what I did was 100 plus 75 plus 4.
14:15100, 75, 4.
14:18I times that by 4.
14:19Times it by 4 for 716.
14:22And it added 50.
14:23Yep, that gets you to one away.
14:25Ahmed.
14:25Same effort.
14:28Brilliant.
14:28Yeah.
14:30Lovely.
14:30Well, listen, we'll reserve a round of applause, because you don't get it if it's possible.
14:34Rachel.
14:35It is, but you're going to have to come back to me.
14:37I did the same as the boys.
14:38A good time, Rachel, to give you a problem, because we're going to have a chat with Richard
14:41Osman in Dictionary Corner.
14:43Don't take this the wrong way.
14:45I'm still getting used to it.
14:46It's weird you being a guest and not controlling the programme, especially because, you know,
14:52I've been on both of your quiz shows.
14:55Yeah.
14:55Yeah.
14:56I mean, I love being a guest.
14:58I mean, hosting is hard work, is the truth, as you three know.
15:01But all three of you, funnily enough, have been on House of Games.
15:04Great show.
15:04And, listen, I don't want to put the cat among the pigeons at all, either Shreddinger's
15:08cat or anything else, because I've come along, and this is such a wonderful show,
15:12I love this show, and everybody from the top up, from Damien, the producer, the runners,
15:15everybody loves this show.
15:16It's beautifully run, and there's a lovely atmosphere between everyone.
15:19But I am going to compare how you all did.
15:22Oh, no.
15:22Now, the first thing I'm going to do is we've got to take Colin completely out of this
15:26equation, because Colin played five, won four, and had a second place.
15:31And you can only, winning five is the only thing you can do better than that, and only
15:34Angela Barnes has ever done that.
15:35Yeah.
15:36So I looked into the stats for Susie and Rachel.
15:40And quite similar, I would have to say.
15:42So I had to dive down right into individual points they scored.
15:45Yeah.
15:45To try and tell them apart, see who's best out of Susie and Rachel.
15:49I know the answer.
15:51First show, Rachel goes four points clear, OK?
15:55Second show, Rachel does another four points clear.
15:57She's eight points clear as we come into Wednesday.
16:00Susie pulls back four points.
16:02Yes.
16:02On Wednesday.
16:03So Susie's four behind.
16:04Get into Thursday's show, they scored exactly the same, the two of them.
16:09Final show, Rachel scores seven points.
16:12Oh.
16:13OK?
16:13If Susie scores 12, Susie is the champ.
16:17If Susie scores 10, Rachel is the champ.
16:21Susie, on the Friday, scored 11 points.
16:25Oh.
16:25They were absolutely identical, the two of them.
16:28Across a whole week, across every single round, exactly the same amount of points.
16:31Isn't that lovely?
16:32That's brilliant.
16:32So nobody loses.
16:33And the one thing people always say on a show, especially if you have lots of celebrities
16:37on, who's your favourite ever contestant?
16:39OK?
16:39And as you know, it's an impossible question to answer.
16:42You can't, even if you have a question.
16:42Neil Delamere.
16:44Neil Delamere.
16:44Sorry, go ahead.
16:46But I met my wife on House of Games.
16:48Yeah.
16:48Ingrid.
16:49So I can, anyone who ever asked me who's your favourite contestant on House of Games,
16:52I have an answer, which was Ingrid Oliver.
16:54So that's nice.
16:55Whether it's true or not, you have the answer.
16:57I love it.
16:58Brilliant to have you here.
16:59Brilliant.
16:59Brilliant.
17:03I love, love House of Games.
17:05Let's get back to Countdown now, and it's time for more letters from Ahmed.
17:08Cheers, Colin.
17:09Could I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
17:11Thank you, Ahmed.
17:12B.
17:13And another.
17:15M.
17:16Vowel.
17:38Here we go.
17:41Vowel.
17:42Vowel.
17:44Vowel.
17:46Vowel.
17:47Vowel.
17:56Vowel.
17:58Vowel.
17:58Vowel.
17:59Vowel.
17:59Vowel.
18:04Vowel.
18:11As quickly as that, time's up. Ahmed.
18:13Six. Ed. Five.
18:16The five is? Ambush.
18:18And the six?
18:20Mabati. Yes.
18:22East African word for corrugated iron sheeting.
18:25Well done.
18:28What have we got next to the corner?
18:30And we had habits, and if you're an 80s music fan,
18:33perhaps you have a wham habit for nine.
18:35Fantastic. Let's get some more letters.
18:38Thank you, Colin. A consonant, please, Rachel.
18:40Thank you, Ed.
18:41R. And another.
18:43N. And another.
18:46C. Vowel.
18:48E. Another vowel.
18:50A. And another.
18:52E. And another.
18:54O. Consonant.
18:57R.
18:58And final consonant, please.
19:01Final S.
19:02Start the clock.
19:33Talk to me, Ed.
19:34Nine.
19:35Ahmed.
19:36Just an eight.
19:38What a moment.
19:39If it's in.
19:39If it's in.
19:40Everyone hold your breath.
19:41Do not breathe.
19:41What's the eight?
19:43Reasonable.
19:44What's the nine?
19:44No, it's the biggest.
19:46Corsner.
19:48Oh, it's not your friend today.
19:50I'm sorry, Ed.
19:52So sorry.
19:53You have to take the risk.
19:55You have to take the gamble at this stage.
19:56You've got to go for it.
19:57Some people, if you're not a champion, sometimes you chicken out.
20:01But a champion, that's how champions play.
20:02Right.
20:02You know, they give it everything.
20:04Yeah, we had just sevens here.
20:05We had Kareens, Koreas, Cornillas.
20:07Yeah.
20:08But nothing more than that.
20:09You're absolutely bang right.
20:10All 16 of our champion, the champions contenders are octo champs.
20:15Absolutely.
20:16Stuff of legend.
20:17As we get more numbers now, an amateur picking him.
20:20One large, one large, one large.
20:23Four, I'll do.
20:24One large.
20:24Do you mean three large?
20:26No.
20:28I thought he meant three large.
20:31Do we need to share his inquiry on that?
20:32He wants it as easy as possible.
20:34Did not mean it that way.
20:35I know what he means.
20:36Right.
20:36Five little.
20:37Final answer.
20:38Two, one, seven, five, six.
20:42And the big one, 25.
20:44And the target, 498.

20:47Numbers up.
21:19Four, nine, eight.
21:20Ahmed.
21:20Four, nine, eight.
21:21Not written down.
21:22Edward.
21:23Four, nine, seven.
21:24Not written down.
21:25OK.
21:25Let's do the four, nine, eight, please.
21:27Six minus two.
21:29Yep.
21:30Four.
21:30Times 25.
21:32Yep.

21:41APPLAUSE
21:43All right, let's get a two-time teaser then.
21:45Angry ten.
21:47Angry ten.
21:48Angry birds, there's at least ten of them.
21:50Angry birds, there's at least ten of them.
22:07Welcome back.
22:08Angry ten becomes gannet tree, which is a breeding colony for gannets, as if we didn't know.
22:14Let's get back to today's countdown.
22:15Champion of champions, Ed Byrne, with it all to do as he picks more letters.
22:20Thanks, Colin.
22:21Now, consonant, please, Rachel.
22:23You're enjoying this, aren't you, Ed?
22:24Right.
22:25Having a whale of a time.
22:26N.
22:27And another one.
22:29R.

23:26OK, what have you got, Ed?
23:27What this really is, unfair.
23:29And Ahmed?
23:31Funkier.
23:32So is it IA?
23:34IA.
23:35OK, so come on, Suze.
23:37Yeah, it's a plant.
23:38It's another name for the hosta.
23:39Yeah.
23:40It's mauve white flowers.
23:41I tell you what, I had no idea there was a plant called Funkier.
23:44What are we doing?
23:45There's a plant called Funkier.
23:47How is this not something we all knew about?
23:48I bet it was probably, it's an eponym, I reckon it was, yeah, named after Heinrich Funk.
23:54Was it?
23:55I bet it's a Funkier.
23:56Unfair as good, you ever got no unrank?
23:59Can you unrank something?
24:00Can you demote someone by unranking them?
24:03Yes, very good.
24:04Let's get more letters.
24:06Ahmed?
24:06Could I get a consonant, please?
24:08Thank you, Ahmed.
24:09T.
24:10And another?
24:12S.

24:37E.
24:39T.

25:07Time is up. Ahmed?
25:10I'll go with a nine.
25:11And Ed?
25:12I'll go with a nine as well.
25:13You got an eye, Ahmed?
25:15Nutteries.
25:17Nutteries.
25:17Same.
25:20It's a beautiful word.
25:21Pray tell, Susie.
25:22We've had ganitry, haven't we?
25:24They say nutteries.
25:24Yes, a place in which nutteries grow or are raised.
25:27Very good.
25:30Not any of these stories, are they getting these wonderful words?
25:32Indeed.
25:33On the subject of beautiful words, we're missing origins of words this week because of Susie's laryngitis.
25:40It's very convenient.
25:41Yeah, exactly.
25:42I just want to touch back on the fact that in the modern era, House of Games and Countdown have
25:47these strange prizes.
25:48Yeah.
25:49You know, the teapot.
25:50You know, the wheelie.
25:52Because these days it's usually a million pounds.
25:54Yes.
25:54Some big prize.
25:55But in the old days, Rich, quiz shows gave away, you know, quite strange things.
26:01Yeah, of course they did.
26:02Blankety-blank, checkbook and pen.
26:04Dusty bin.
26:05Oh, my goodness.
26:06The bully tankard from Bullseye.
26:09I like that sort of thing.
26:11Funny enough, on House of Games, most celebrity quiz shows, they play for charity and so everything has to be
26:17very above board.
26:18On House of Games, no one's playing for anything so we can muck about a lot.
26:21In fact, when I was talking about meeting my wife on House of Games, Ingrid, because she won, she got
26:25to come back on Champion of Champions.
26:27But because we were married, we had to pass a BBC board.
26:30So is it all right that she can come on the show?
26:33And honestly, their memo back said, the prizes on the show are so insignificant, of course it's okay.
26:40And it reminds me, actually, when I met her, Ed Byrne was one of the other contestants.
26:44Oh, fantastic.
26:45So there you go.
26:45No, but I love that.
26:46And, you know, it's sort of harking back to, say, the century and, you know, canteens of cutlery.
26:50We have a lot of fun thinking up our prizes.
26:53Listen, they always use the phrase, the unique way the BBC is funded.
26:57And it's used as a compliment and an insult.
26:59But I love the idea that you would be plotting at home with Ingrid to fix House of Games.
27:04Like, that's your moral level.
27:05I'm thinking, we are going to get ourselves a dart ball with my face on it.
27:09But she does now, at home, she has a golden baseball cap with my face on that she won.
27:15You know, the first time I ever saw the golden baseball cap with my face on, I thought,
27:18I can't think of anyone in the world who would choose that as a prize.
27:21And as soon as Ingrid came on the show, I thought, of course I know someone.
27:24Of course I know someone who'd choose that as a prize.
27:26That's brilliant.
27:26She very much had a wham habit in the 18th.
27:29Fantastic.
27:30Right, Ed, let's get back to the game and get your letters.
27:33A constant, please, Rachel.
27:34Thank you, Ed.
27:35Aw.
27:36And another.
27:38T.
27:39And another.
27:40D.
27:42A vowel.
27:43A.
27:45Another vowel.
27:46O.
27:47And another vowel.
27:48O.
27:49And a consonant.
27:51R.
27:52And a vowel.
27:54E.
27:55And a consonant.
27:57Lastly, G.
27:58Countdown.
27:59gotten over.
28:00And a vowel.
28:21One.
28:22One.
28:23One.
28:25One.
28:26One.
28:27One.
28:28Two.
28:28Two.
28:30That's time Ed. Nine. Ahmed. Yeah I'll have to go over nine as well then. Okay Ed. Derogator. Derogator and
28:37Ahmed. Same words. There you go. Is it in Susie? I'm afraid it is not. Derogatory is in but not
28:44a derogator. They're just firing all over the place here. That's unlucky. I have to say in the history of
28:49television I've never heard someone say the word consonant please in a more depressed voice than I heard Ed do
28:54there.
28:55Toreador which we had the other day didn't we? Yeah we did. What's the difference in a Toreador and a
28:59Matador? I think a Toreador is normally on horseback whereas a Matador is usually just standing. There you go. Didn't
29:06even have to look it up. Right more letters now for Ahmed. He's been a red ragdable in every round.
29:11Let's go. Can I have a consonant please? You can indeed. N. And another. X. Vowel. I. Another. E.
29:24Consonant. M. A vowel. I. Consonant. D. A vowel. A. And a final consonant please. Final N. Last letters.

30:24Diamines, what have we got in the dictionary corner?
30:25We have a definition, at least.
30:27It's a compound whose molecule contains two amino groups.
30:30Good stuff.
30:31Diamines are a girl's best friend.
30:33Susie had diamine.
30:34I was happy with median, but Susie beat me with diamine.
30:37Fantastic.
30:38Right, one more numbers round to get.
30:40Ed, it's all over as a competition, so do whatever you want.
30:43Well, we'll go out with a bang.
30:44Four large, please.
30:46Four large.
30:46Let's see if we can get your tricks on display.
30:49Thank you, Ed.
30:49And two little ones.
30:51Final numbers of the day.
30:52One.
30:53Six, and then the big ones.
30:5575, 50, 25, 100.
30:59And the target, 906.
31:03906 last numbers.

31:36Ed Byrne.
31:37906.
31:38Yeah.
31:38I'm in Muhammad.
31:39906.
31:40Yes, go ahead, Ed.
31:41Well, he asked for a trick, so I'll give you one.
31:4325, take one.
31:44It's 24.
31:45Yeah, I thought you might say this.
31:47100 over 50 is two.
31:49It is.
31:50Divided by two for 12.
31:53Times by 75.
31:55And I add to six.
31:55Well, thank you for not going up to 90,000, anyway.
32:00906.
32:00Well done.
32:00Very good.
32:02And, Ahmed, did you go a more traditional route?
32:04Definitely.
32:05100 plus 50 plus one.
32:08151.
32:09Times six.
32:10Perfect.
32:10906.
32:14Well done.
32:1510 points.
32:16It's 121 plays 66.
32:19Ahmed, I know it's over, but a 131, even at this highest level,
32:23throws down such a marker to everybody else in Champion of Champions,
32:27if you haven't already.
32:28So, fingers on buzzers.
32:30Every point counts on this show.
32:32Let's reveal today's Countdown Conundrum.
32:35MUSIC PLAYS
32:45Ed.
32:46Recension.
32:47Recension.
32:48Let's have a look.
32:49Yes.
32:51APPLAUSE
32:54Nice one, nice one.
32:55It feels good.
32:56It looks so much better now.
32:58It looks so much better.
32:59The 76 is now very respectable at any level.
33:04I'm the first person to get a conundrum so far in the Champion of Champions.
33:09So, there you go.
33:10All of that is just us trying to make you feel better about the trouncing you took today.
33:15And I know you're well enough to say that.
33:16Talk to me about Ahmed's performance, because he just came out of the blocks and he was out of sight.
33:22No, gotcha, enough for him.
33:23It's just something else.
33:25Speechless.
33:26Speechless.
33:26He trounced me.
33:27The good news is, all is not lost, because we obviously paid to get you here,
33:32and you're going on a stag weekend in Liverpool.
33:35That's it, yeah.
33:36It just turns into a massive drinking holiday now.
33:38Watch the rest of the tournament and just relax.
33:40Brilliant.
33:41Ahmed, I mean, you've been there and done it.
33:44But it's worth saying, you've got your role.
33:47You know, and there's not many people in the Champion of Champions can say that.
33:50You're still unbeaten.
33:51Well, I mean, it's Champion of Champions.
33:53Whoever you lose to, you can't really complain, because everyone's so good.
33:56But, no, I love Ed.
33:58He's such a great guy, and I've enjoyed playing him.
34:01Brilliant.
34:02Well, well done.
34:02We'll see you back in the quarterfinals.
34:04Well done, The Bookman.
34:07Very little else we can say.
34:08Richard, Susie, it's just good to hang on to the coattails.
34:11I mean, listen, amazing all week, but Ahmed is going to be very, very tough to beat in this competition,
34:15I think.
34:16And, Rachel, you're being made to work as well.
34:18Well, I think I'm keeping up with our contestants this week.
34:20That's all I can say.
34:21Absolutely.
34:21We'll do it all again tomorrow.
34:23Same time, same place.
34:24Rachel, Susie and I will be here.
