Yushima Tenjin Shrine (Yushima Tenmangu) is a historic shrine located in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo. Its history dates back to 458 AD, when it was founded to enshrine Ameno-Tajikarao, a powerful deity from Japanese mythology.
For many centuries, Yushima Tenjin has been deeply associated with Sugawara no Michizane, a renowned scholar and poet of the Heian period. In 1355, after Michizane’s death, he came to be revered as “Tenjin-sama,” the god of learning, and was enshrined at Yushima Tenjin.
