00:05Small Fortress in Theresienstadt, where he became a master over the lives of the inmates
00:10of the local prison.
00:11In light of the growing terror against the local Czech population, the Nazi occupiers
00:16needed to expand their persecution apparatus.
00:19In order to accommodate the growing number of detainees, the Gestapo, which was the Nazi
00:24secret state police, looked for new suitable facilities.
00:28They chose the Small Fortress because of its proximity to Prague, but also because it
00:33was a former military fortress, so it was easy to guard prisoners there.
00:37Opposition activists from all social classes, workers, scientists, doctors, priests, Jews,
00:44Soviet prisoners of war, women and men, were arrested by the Gestapo and deported to Theresienstadt,
00:50where they awaited their sentence, only to be executed or transferred to a concentration
00:55camp.
