Bentley Toybox events are an opportunity to experience Bentley's heritage and current lineup. This time Bentley Toybox was all about three sedans, which played key roles in Bentley’s history: the 60-year old T-Series, the 40-year old Turbo R, and the 20-year old Flying Spur. The latter being the first Bentley sedan to achieve top speed of over 200 mph, which is about 322 kmh/h. Spoiler, I didn’t drive as fast, but here’s going to be some track work later on in the episode.

00:06what am i doing and how did i get here let me explain a couple of months ago i received
00:11a
00:11suspiciously looking email from someone with clearly a fake name who claimed to represent
00:16bentley's communication department just google bentley's chief communications officer anyway
00:23he drives an audi and he's seen my sq5 review which he liked so much that he decided to ask
00:29me if perhaps i'd like to drive some bentleys i looked at my calendar which was filled with chinese
00:35premieres and replied that i'll make an exception for bentley and off i was on a flight to blighty
00:40specifically to manchester and then to crew where bentley has its factory and also a house which was
00:46once the residence of bentley's ceos and currently serves as a space where clients can configure
00:52their cars and experience bentley's collaborations with designers artists distillers or hi-fi
00:58manufacturers a wonderful start to the day here at muse the bentley house and we're going to
01:05experience some of the toys here behind me there is something new and something old something for
01:09everyone and of course they're mowing the lawn as the event begins because this is why the brits have
01:16beautiful lawns
01:34every now and then so-called bentley toy box events are organized this time it was all about three sedans
01:40which played key roles in bentley's history the 60 year old t-series the 40 year old turbo r and
01:48the 20 year old flying spare the latter being the first bentley sedan to achieve top speed of over 200
01:54miles per hour which is about 322 kilometers per hour spoiler i didn't drive as fast but there is going
02:01to be some track work later on in the episode let's start with the t-series which was bentley's first
02:07model
02:07with a monocoque chassis this car we cannot take out because it's still being registered however
02:16it's been thoroughly restored it was found in california i believe uh three or four years ago it was fully
02:24restored here in the uk it's absolutely lovely it smells of leather and wood and everything and um
02:34yeah it's just a beautiful place to be and uh the seats are soft and the suspension
02:40if i move about like this the whole car wobbles a bit it's uh absolutely wonderful
02:46unveiled at the 1965 paris motor show the t-series had smaller exterior dimensions to its predecessor
02:51but offered more interior space it was powered by a 6.2 liter v8 producing 202 horsepower the car could
02:59accelerate
02:59from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just over 10 seconds and had a top speed of 112 miles
03:05per hour
03:06or approximately 180 kilometers per hour interesting fact at the time bentley belonged to rolls-royce and
03:13the t-series was essentially a rebadged shadow so much so that even the seatbelt buckle bears the rolls logo
03:20as no one could be bothered to produce a separate buckle
03:24the rs roe's subsequent financial problems and bentley's declining sales provided an opportunity to
03:30revitalize the latter brand by differentiating it from rolls and focusing on its racing heritage
03:37then came the malzahn and its malzahn turbo variant which had one drawback it had more performance than
03:45handling and this is where the bentley turbo r came into play r for road holding unlike its predecessor
04:06here i am behind the wheel of the bentley turbo r and i'm just leaving the built-up area and
04:12i could
04:13give it a little squirt
04:18oh
04:23it doesn't need to but it can
04:27the 80s called me and said they want their car back but i'm not sure i'm gonna give them their
04:33car
04:33back just yet i'm excited just to be here to be able to sort of take in this wonderful experience
04:44the
04:44vertical dash the thin steering wheel the analog gauges oh everything is so within reach and i suppose if
04:56i spent a few hours with this car it would prove to be intuitive because right now i just see
05:00a bunch
05:01of buttons but uh why did we go to screens when this was such a wonderful wonderful layout
05:09oh and it's just so comfortable
05:20oh it's unbelievable how this thing just goes at the touch of the pedal oh
05:30i may have just run over a pothole but to be honest i can't tell oh a roundabout
05:46okay okay okay okay okay okay and back we are from the roundabout
05:56i see people are looking i don't know if it's because they enjoy this car or whether they're
06:04wondering why a young person such as myself is driving it
06:12okay okay okay so the braking situation here while the brakes bite they don't bite from the very top
06:20so you know you just have to be mindful of this and oh my god i would like to overtake
06:28but
06:30not in a car that's
06:33uh worth probably more than my house or two
06:49the 1985 turbo r was powered by a six and three quarter liter v8 with a garrett turbo and produced
06:57almost 300 horsepower it could accelerate from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in seven seconds
07:02and had a top speed of 135 miles per hour or nearly 220 kilometers per hour it's said that this
07:10model
07:10actually saved the british brand as it garnered interest in the market a dozen or so years later
07:17bentley was acquired by volkswagen group this was vw's golden age with projects like the phaeton which
07:24lent its platform also to the 2005 flying spare
07:32this is what luxury looked and felt like 20 years ago this is the bentley flying spare
07:57this is what luxury looks like
08:24turbo are that's pretty cool
08:46and we give the Bentley Flying Spur a little squirt here
08:52oh oh and it warns me to slow down instantly because it gets going pretty
09:02quickly I used to have a Lincoln mark 7 LSC leisure sports coupe or something of
09:14short anyway that was a early 90s car this is a early mid-2000s car and I feel a
09:24lot of similarities in the way the car smells the way the car feels to drive
09:30it's the luxury of the turn of the century and I really enjoyed it I'm not
09:37sure I am all for what luxury stands for nowadays but this this is just lovely
09:44and you know you don't need to drive it fast it's it's a car you can should you
09:51need to drive it fast but you don't need to interestingly enough I'm not sure how
09:58much this car has been restored versus the turbo are that I experienced just a
10:05while back it doesn't feel quite as comfortable I am not familiar with all
10:12the systems here and perhaps there is some sort of a suspension setting that I
10:19am not fully aware of that makes this car a bit more comfortable but it's an
10:23observation also I'm not happy with the placement of the shift paddles which are
10:28in the place where I would expect the indicators to be but that's how they
10:35designed it back in the day still most gauges are analog and that's great there
10:41are a couple of screens which one of them the central one may date the car ever so
10:48slightly but it's not terrible great turning circle by the way
11:01speaking of performance hmm the brake performance here is a bit better a bit
11:11more immediate than in the turbo are you can feel 20 years has passed and the car
11:17reacts much quicker to driver inputs especially in the brake department
11:22rather than everybody wondering what the driver had in mind and should we be
11:29braking already or maybe wait a bit more so this is great
11:37six-liter w12 engine all-wheel drive and nearly 560 horsepower in Bentley's tests the
11:44car exceeded 200 miles per hour but the official specification mentions a
11:49conservative 195 miles per hour or approximately 315 kilometers per hour
11:57before we saw any track action i also managed to briefly hop behind the wheel of the 2025 flying spare
12:04the car this time a plug-in hybrid the car is hybrid so
12:11we start absolutely silent
12:35now i see a lot of similarities to the 20 year old car i've driven just a while ago now
12:42of course
12:43this one doesn't squeak or rattle and the suspension is much nicer obviously
12:53we'll see how it goes in a minute when i leave the urban area because right now i'm all in
13:01electric
13:01mode this is a plug-in hybrid so we can't hear much and we are just about to exit the
13:09built-up area
13:10there is of course a car right on my tail but not for long
13:23oh
13:36okay so this is obviously much more modern we have all the speed recognition business and
13:44uh the sensors are much better calibrated than in the other car the steering wheel
13:51somehow seems smaller than in the previous models maybe it's because it's a bit thicker
14:00it's not bmw thick but
14:04it is sort of good to hold
14:09oh i love it through here
14:15shouldn't be doing this
14:18not me i mean me as well but also the car shouldn't be able to do this
14:24so despite having a good turning circle this one is noticeably wider than the other two i've driven
14:32for the first time today i feel that the um that the street is too narrow for for this car
14:39interesting
14:46now that i'm stuck behind a tractor i can tell you a few things about the interior and it's a
14:52wonderful
14:53color combo i like that there is green on the leather and even on the wood veneer here there is
15:05also some brown wood and that also looks absolutely lovely and of course there is a screen it's a sort
15:15of
15:15turn around flip over screen
15:18like in a rolls royce so you can hide it away
15:23but it's there if you need your sat nav settings etc but the most important stuff is
15:30done with physical controls and i like it i appreciate it and
15:37i guess this is a modern luxury going back to physical buttons a
15:44this example was specified as a tribute to the turbo r i drove first the plug-in hybrid powertrain
15:51has a total output of 782 horsepower combining a v8 with an electric motor under optimal conditions
15:58the car can cover over 70 kilometers on electric power alone and has a 0 to 100 kilometers per hour
16:05time of three and a half seconds of course i wasn't able to verify such performance on public roads so
16:10bentley took us to alton park circuit where firstly we were to drive the high and ultra high performance
16:16hybrids and secondly we'll get to that yes 3.2 seconds to 100 kilometers per hour and a 2.5
16:25ton
16:25coupe is impressive as is its incredible handling after a few laps of the track which is over four
16:31kilometers long and has about 30 meters of elevation change i felt like i was driving a porsche okay the
16:37bentley is much more comfortable but when it comes to g-forces i'd really had enough especially as i really
16:45wanted to drive or at least be driven in the new old speed 6 the speed 6 continuation bentley emphasizes
16:54is more than a replica it follows the same design and production methods as the original car this is
17:01the second project of its kind bentley previously resurrected the blower all 12 speed 6 continuation
17:08models found owners before the car was unveiled at the goodwood festival of speed but the opportunity to
17:14be driven in this vehicle was very very special indeed in 1929 and 1930 the bentley speed 6 won the
17:22leman race over 600 parts were needed to replicate the six cylinder six and a half liter engine during
17:28testing these reconstructed engines produced 205 horsepower within 5 horsepower to what the original speed 6
17:35racing engines made in 1930 according to documentation at alton park the six speed continuation reached over 70
17:43miles per hour slightly below what it achieved at lemon 95 years ago but still quite fast
17:49considering the high center of gravity and lack of any safety features honestly in the event of a crash
17:55those helmets we had to wear would only have prolonged their agony but seriously it was a wonderful
18:01experience and perhaps it's a good thing the good people at bentley didn't let us drive this unique vehicle
18:07this is also because some of the guests present probably not only don't know how to drive a stick
18:13but also have no idea what double clutching is
18:30exciting day here at bentley and uh yeah i know it's not my usual review stuff but i hope you
18:37felt some of
18:37the emotions uh that i experienced here and uh yeah regular review coming up next week and now let's look
18:45some more at the uh six speed continuation because that thing is crazy crazy
