00:00I don't recall a press car launch in recent years, during which the company rep wouldn't tell us why sedans,
00:05hatchbacks and estates are being replaced by another SUV or rather a crossover.
00:10While at the beginning these vehicles usually had all-wheel drive, these days many don't even offer it as an
00:16option.
00:17Today I have for you a rather short list of SUVs or rather crossovers, which have all-wheel drive and
00:23cost new below €35,000.
00:27How many do you think are there?
00:28Let's find out.
00:45Disclaimer.
00:46Prices used in the English version of my listicles are from Germany.
00:50They are from carmakers' official websites and don't take into account any rebates.
00:55However, if one of the cars or brands inspires you, check out your local dealer.
01:00Maybe they'll have some special offer on cars, which they need to move out of the doors ASAP.
01:06If I didn't list a car, it's probably because at the time of writing the script it was too expensive
01:10or unavailable.
01:12Or I missed something, in which case, be sure to tell me I'm wrong in the comment section.
01:17I list the cars in alphabetical order, though this time there won't be too many letters of the alphabet.
01:26Opening is Dacia Duster.
01:29Dacia tempts us with factory autogas installation or an automatic gearbox and full hybrid drivetrain.
01:34However, if you want all-wheel drive, it's mild hybrid and a manual gearbox only.
01:39Price for the drivetrain configuration starts at €24,650, and that's a steal by today's standards.
01:46For €500 extra in total, you can get the winter package with heated steering wheel and heated seats,
01:54and seat height and lumbar adjustment, support adjustment, as well as a spare wheel.
02:00All this for €500.
02:01And you have a great car to drive around your farm, I guess.
02:05But even if you choose the top spec, tick all the major options and add some clip-on or u
02:11-clip accessories,
02:12you're still driving out of the showroom for less than €30,000.
02:16Now, positives.
02:17It's hard to find a more interesting-looking new car with all-wheel drive in this price range.
02:22The interior is spacious for what is basically a B crossover.
02:26The negatives.
02:28Many people would pay extra just to get a diesel, and then Dacia would not be able to keep up
02:34with selling new dusters.
02:36After D, there's nothing until we get to S like Ssangyong,
02:41and here we have two cars to choose from, the Tivoli and the Corando.
02:45The Tivoli starts at just €25,000, and regardless of the spec,
02:49you can add all-wheel drive for €2,000 and an automatic gearbox for €2,200.
02:55Same thing with the Corando.
02:57It starts at €31,500, and you pay €2,000 for all-wheel drive and €2,200 for automatic.
03:03In both cases, under the bonnet, you get a 1.5-liter turbo petrol producing 163 horsepower.
03:08The automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive are independent of each other.
03:11In most brands these days, you have to choose one or the other, and they're restricted by trim levels.
03:18Other positives.
03:19Go for the lowest equipment versions, because their low price helps turn a blind eye to all the negatives.
03:27Subaru Crosstrek, formerly known in Europe as the XV, is a brilliant car, but not in Europe,
03:34where it gets a luckluster engine, which can't cover up the fact the CVT isn't anybody's favorite choice either.
03:41This combo means the Eurospec Crosstrek is an absolute dog to drive.
03:46However, priced at just below €35,000, it fits the bill.
03:51Also, the cockpit is a joy to interact with, as there are still many physical controls.
03:56Subaru all-wheel drive is known for its robustness when the going gets tough.
04:01And look at it this way.
04:03With a Subaru, your parents will stop nagging you about grandkids.
04:07Suzuki has four vehicles which sort of make it on the list.
04:11Two are small, but one is very off-road worthy.
04:14The smallest and the cheapest on the list is the Ignis.
04:18An all-grip, all-wheel drive version starts at €21,860.
04:22Since Stellantis axed the Fiat Panda 4x4, the Suzuki Ignis is the only small all-wheel drive car which fits
04:29on narrow alpine roads.
04:31It may not be a rugged off-roader, but with good set of tires, it will hold its own in
04:37the mountains,
04:37where its tiny dimensions play to its advantage.
04:41Also, the Ignis has a relatively practical interior.
04:43The sliding rear seat means more space for luggage without having to make the passengers walk behind the car.
04:49Although, it may turn out they will have to push.
04:53But at least the car is light, so they won't be very tired.
04:57Another Suzuki on the list is the Vitara.
04:59All-wheel drive with a manual gearbox means you're getting a mild hybrid at €30,250.
05:05It's the cheaper and safer choice.
05:08All-wheel drive with automatic gearbox pushes you into a full hybrid,
05:11which unfortunately is not a Toyota transplant like in the Suzuki Swayze.
05:16The Suzuki full hybrid is just terrible, and you can watch my full review to find out what's wrong with
05:22it.
05:23Otherwise, the Vitara is a fine example of a decent car for a relatively sensible price.
05:28I know everything is expensive these days.
05:30There are no surprises, but there are also no luxuries.
05:33Before you buy, make sure you know how to turn off some of the driver aids.
05:38They may be somewhat annoying.
05:40Same with the Suzuki S-Cross, which costs €32,650 with all-wheel drive manual mild hybrid.
05:47Even more space, and that's about all I have to say about it.
05:51I'm not a fan, because I really liked the original SX4.
05:56And closing the list is yet another Suzuki, albeit it may not be for everyone.
06:02The only way Suzuki can sell the Jimny in Europe nowadays is by turning it into a commercial vehicle.
06:08So, it's a two-seater with a grille separating the cargo area.
06:13I know in some countries people don't care and they will turn it back into a four-seater,
06:18although I'm not sure about the legal aspects of such actions,
06:22especially if they still want to claim VAT, because commercial vehicle.
06:26Anyway, the Jimny costs around €30,000,
06:28and it's a great little off-roader for farm use or just to play around in the mud on weekends.
06:35And this is my rather short list of €35,000 all-wheel drive SUVs crossovers.
06:41By the way, I'd like to explain that SUV and crossover is a term used interchangeably these days.
06:48Back in the day, SUVs were more comfortable off-roaders,
06:52and crossovers were just lifted regular cars.
06:55These days, we get monocoque chassis off-roaders like the Land Rover Defender,
06:59and crossovers with high enough ground clearance, like the Subaru Crosstrek,
07:03which, on a good off-road tire, can take you further into the wild than you'd expect
07:09from what essentially looks like a hatchback.
07:12And how about you?
07:13When choosing an SUV or a crossover, are you looking for all-wheel drive,
07:17or maybe you just like the looks, but you're looking for efficiency?
07:21Let me know in the comments section below.
07:24I published listicles, usually last Friday of the month.
