00:00A Syrian court has sentenced ousted leader Bashar al-Assad to death after a trial in absentia,
00:06convicting him of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity during the country's civil war.
00:12Now, this is the first conviction against Assad after his regime was overthrown in December 2024,
00:18ending his family's five-decade grip on power.
00:22The court convicted Assad of premeditated murder, including the killing of children,
00:27as well as torture, arbitrary arrests and crimes against humanity.
00:32Assad's cousin and former head of political security in southern Syria, Atif Najib,
00:36was also sentenced to death along with six other former officials under the Assad regime.
00:41Assad had fled Damascus and is now in Moscow.
00:45Since his ouster, Syrian authorities have arrested senior figures from the former regime,
00:49as President Ahmad al-Shara wows to hold those responsible for abuses accountable.
00:55Assad's rule was defined by a civil war that erupted in 2011,
00:59after government forces responded with a violent crackdown on pro-democracy protests.
