The Immigration Department has detained a Pakistani man believed to have used the department’s official logo and warning lights on a vehicle, less than 24 hours after a video of the incident went viral on social media.

Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said the man was detained at about 4.30pm on Sunday (Aug 9) during a special operation in Setapak.

00:12of the incident went viral on social media. Immigration Director General Datuk Zakaria
00:17Shaban said the man was detained at about 4.30 p.m. on Sunday during a special operation in
00:24Setapak. He said the operation was launched after the department received intelligence
00:28from a viral video showing a vehicle bearing the Immigration Department logo being used by a
00:34foreign national. An Indonesian woman who had overstayed in Malaysia was also detained during
00:40the operation. Immigration officers also found two Indonesian passports believed to belong to
00:46other individuals in the Pakistani man's possession. Zakaria said preliminary investigations found
00:53that the video was recorded in April last year but was only uploaded as a WhatsApp status
00:59by the man's wife on August 7 while she was in Indonesia. The Pakistani man is being investigated
01:05under section 12 subsection 1 paragraph f of the Passports Act 1966 and the Immigration Act 1959-63.
01:16Following the arrests, immigration officers traced a four-wheel drive vehicle believed to be the one
01:22featured in the viral video to a car wash on Jalan Kuching, Kuala Lumpur. The vehicle owner,
01:28also a Pakistani national, was arrested along with eight other foreign workers. The owner is being
01:34investigated under section 55b of the Immigration Act while the eight workers are suspected of offences
01:41under section 6 subsection 1 paragraph c for not possessing valid travel documents. The vehicle owner
01:48admitted installing the immigration department logo and warning lights for personal use but claimed he
01:55was unaware that doing so was an offence.
