A Green Sea Turtle is a large and graceful marine reptile found in tropical and subtropical oceans around the world. Despite its name, its shell is usually brown, olive, or gray—the name “green turtle” comes from the greenish color of the fat beneath its shell.
Adult green sea turtles feed mainly on seagrasses and algae, making them one of the few predominantly herbivorous sea turtles. Using their powerful flippers, they can migrate thousands of kilometers between feeding areas and nesting beaches. Females often return to the same region where they hatched to lay their own eggs.
