00:25But yes, she delighted in drinking the blood of her murdered victims, believing it kept her young and vibrant.
00:33Known throughout the world as the most prolific female murderer, Elizabeth Bathory was born into a noble family in the
00:40Kingdom of Hungary,
00:41where she spent her childhood at the Ixade Castle and was showered with wealth, education and high social status.
00:49Her parents were George Bottery of Ixade and Lady Anna Bathory.
00:53While her older brother was Stephen Bottery, who grew to become a Judge Royal of Hungary.
01:00At age 11, she was engaged to Ferenc Nardesty.
01:04The couple got married after Elizabeth Klopp 15 and Nardesty 19.
01:10Bathory's social status was much higher than her husband's, so she refused to change her surname and remained a Bathory.
01:18In 1578, Nardesty became the chief commander of the Hungarian troops and led them to war against the Ottomans.
01:27This was when Elizabeth's bloody rampage began.
01:30With her husband away at war, Elizabeth Bottery was left in charge of all his business affairs and the estates.
01:39She began to entice adolescent daughters of local peasants with offers of well-paid work as maidservants in the castle.
01:48She lured the daughters of the lesser gentry, by offering to teach them courtly etiquette.
01:53Many young women fell for her trick, and those she couldn't get, she objected.
01:59Elizabeth brutalized, tortured, and killed the girls.
02:03She subjected them to severe beatings, burning or mutilation of hands, biting the flesh off the faces, arms and other
02:11body parts, freezing in cold water, scalding in hot tongs, and starving to death.
02:18The girls were also covered in honey and life ants.
02:22It was said, that when any of the girls, died from the torture, and wounds, the countess had their blood
02:28extracted, which she then bathed herself in, and drank some of it.
02:33This earned her the title, Blood Countess, or in some occasions, Bloody Mary.
02:40Elizabeth believed, that the blood of virgins, kept her young, and energetic.
02:44And so, she continued these acts, for a long time.
02:48But she was not alone.
02:50She had four other accomplices, who aided her in her atrocious acts, namely, Dorotia, Alona, Katerina, and Janos.
02:59News of Bathory's murderous acts, spread throughout the kingdom.
03:04Some suspected her of cannibalism, that she ate the flesh of the girls, she killed.
03:09In 1610, King Matthias II, sent George Thurzo, the palatine of Hungary, to investigate these strange claims.
03:18Thurzo reportedly caught Elizabeth in the act, thereby confirming these claims.
03:24As further evidence, Thurzo reportedly found, a mutilated dead girl, another, badly wounded and dying, and a lot of other
03:32girls, imprisoned in the castle, of the counties.
03:35Other investigators, found traces of torture, on the dead bodies.
03:41Some of which were buried, in graveyards, and other locations.
03:45Elizabeth's victims, were estimated to be about 650.
03:50With these findings, Elizabeth Bathory was arrested, along with her four accomplices.
03:56But because of her social prominence, and her family's influence, she was saved from facing trial.
04:02The Countess was later imprisoned, in December 1609, within Cashtis Castle.
04:09She was held in solitary confinement, in a windowless room, until her death, five years later.
