00:02A smart home for bees. 23-year-old engineering student Rohit N has developed a beehive that
00:09sends data directly to farmer's smartphones. Using the Internet of Things and the mobile
00:17app, farmers can monitor their beehives remotely. They can even check how many bees are inside
00:23the hive. The hive is monitored by an AI-enabled camera. We have also added sensors that monitor
00:35things like temperature, humidity and air pressure. If something unusual happens inside the hive,
00:41the system sends an alert. Here, in the mountainous region around Velour
00:53in Tamil Nadu, many families live from small-scale farming, forest products and some raise livestock.
01:01But few of the people who live here enjoy a reliable income. Via a local beekeeping initiative
01:09and with Rohit's help, more than 1,500 beehives have now been distributed to farmers in the
01:15region. The basic idea is that bees pollinate fruit trees such as mango and lemon, thereby
01:22increasing harvests. Families can then supplement their income by selling the honey.
01:36We had a good peanut harvest and average mango harvest this year. But beehives increased our
01:41harvest by one to two times. They buy our honey for 300 rupees per litter. We keep it ready,
01:49they collect it and we earn around 4,000 to 5,000 rupees a month. It's very useful for us.
01:58Many farmers see the financial benefits of beekeeping. But traditional beekeeping also requires regular
02:04hive checks, treatments and interventions. They say, if we keep 10 to 20 beehives, how do we maintain
02:13and inspect them? It's a heavy burden, not an easy job. This is a problem. We need to provide a
02:19solution
02:20for this. To make this difficult job easier, we have created these AI autonomous beehives.
02:27There are benefits for bees too. Every time a hive is opened for inspection, it stresses the colony.
02:35Rohit's smart beehive reduces the need for frequent inspections. The computer science student received
02:41a grant of 500,000 rupees, about 4,500 euros from India's Ministry of Science to develop his project.
02:49A built-in sensor measures honey levels without removing the combs. And that's not all the
02:54digital beehive can do.
02:59Farmers face another challenge. Insects and beetles get into the hives and attack the bees.
03:04This system alerts them immediately so they can respond quickly.
03:11So for farmers, the smart beehive is a major asset. But for now, it's still much more expensive than
03:18conventional models. A prototype costs around 30,000 rupees, just under 300 euros. It needs to become
03:25much cheaper to be a realistic option for many small farmers.
