00:03Social media has been flooded with images of mass migration to Teuta, the Spanish territory bordering Morocco.
00:10The videos show tens of thousands of migrants rushing across the border in late July,
00:15although most of them have now returned, according to the Spanish authorities.
00:19Nevertheless, a wave of misleading visuals also spread along with them,
00:24including AI-generated images presented as authentic photos taken by journalists,
00:28old videos falsely linked to the crossings and footage shared out of context.
00:34Take a look at this dramatic image which allegedly shows a Moroccan officer throwing a rock at a migrant climbing
00:40an embankment as he returns from Teuta.
00:43It's been credited to Reuters, but there's no evidence that the news agency published this image.
00:48OpenAI's verification tool found that it was generated using its own software.
00:52However, while it's not authentic, several videos filmed from different angles appear to show a similar incident near Efnidek,
01:00which shares a border with Teuta.
01:03News agency AFP reported there were clashes involving Moroccan police and security forces in the area,
01:10publishing video footage showing Moroccan officers wearing similar riot gear.
01:14Another image allegedly showing dozens of shoes floating in the sea as evidence of the waste that amassed during the
01:21crossing has also circulated widely on social media.
01:24It was even picked up by certain news outlets, but again, OpenAI detected that it was made using its software.
01:32Then there's this video, which doesn't appear to be AI-generated, but it is being shared out of context.
01:37Social media users are linking it to the Teuta crisis, saying it shows migrants reaching Andalusia in southern Spain by
01:45boat.
01:46But the reverse image search shows that the clip is at least three years old and has been shared multiple
01:51times over the years,
01:53with accounts claiming each time that it's recent.
