00:57and both boys are playing and one's up and one's down. It's a rollercoaster of emotion for the families as

06:16And, you know, being out there on the field with all these amazing players and seeing these

06:26Let's go back to when you were young because you were a ball boy for the Vikings.
06:30How instrumental was that in your career?
06:32Yeah, I mean, it gave me on-the-job training for something that I really wanted to do at
06:38a young age.
06:39And so you get a chance to model yourself after John Randall and Randall McDaniel and Chris
06:43Doman and Warren Moon and Randy Moss and Chris Carter.
06:46You know, some of the greatest players in the world.
06:48And, you know, to be able to learn from them, doing what they do best, it was great for me.

07:52You know, all the great players that would be on the sidelines playing the Vikings back in the day.
07:55So, it was one of the best jobs ever.
07:57And I got paid nothing, you know.
07:58It was one of those jobs I would do for free, you know.

08:01Well, it was worth its weight in gold, right?
08:04You said you were looked after by all of those players.
08:06And one of those players was Randy Moss.
08:08You have a funny story from, it's about Randy and your junior prom.
08:13Will you share us with that?
08:14Yeah, I mean, so I was very close to Randy.
08:15He was always super kind to me and my family.
08:18And I asked him one time after a game if he would be okay with me, you know, one day
08:23taking his car to prom.
08:24Because he had this 745 LI that I just absolutely loved.
08:27It was blue.
08:28Had the sparkles on the roof.
08:30It was just one of the most gorgeous cars ever.
08:32He had the base in the back.
08:34You know, it was great.
08:35And so I asked him, he told me it was cool, and I was able to do it, and I
08:39was the talk of town.
08:40He made me the man for the day, you know.
08:42I'm sure you were.
08:43That's pretty special at such a young age.
08:45And you were looked after by those players, and now your son, who's at Notre Dame, Devin, is having the
08:50same opportunity.
08:51How important is that for you as a father?
08:53Well, I mean, it's great.
08:54I mean, whenever your kids want to do something that you want to do, and Chris, you know, he understands
08:59that.
08:59His kids play ball and follow them in his footsteps.
09:01And so you just try to do everything you can to, you know, teach him and kind of put him
09:05around people who can be helpful to him.
09:07But it's great seeing him blossom and kind of take his next step.
09:10He's at a wonderful institution, getting coached by one of the best coaches in all of college football.
09:15So I'm very blessed that he's able to do that.
09:17Yeah, it's awesome.
09:18Mike and Chris have a question for you.
09:20Yeah, Larry, I'm just curious.
09:21We were out there trying to talk to the Cardinals, and everybody was wearing Fitzgerald XI.
09:25You look at the sideline, every guy is in a Fitzgerald XI t-shirt.
09:29Like, how does that hit you, the impact that you have made?
09:31I mean, you were one of the all-time greats for one of the flagship franchises in this league.
09:36Well, Mike, it's a great feeling to know that your organization stands behind you.
09:40They were willingly participating in this game, you know, to raise the profile of our organization and our great state
09:47of Arizona.
09:47So to be associated with Arizona Cardinals and, you know, a Bidwell family, it's a great honor.
09:52And I'm really happy that they would honor me like this.
09:54Look at all them.

10:24So he's in a restaurant and comes up and very nice.
10:29Probably had 10 people at the table.
10:31Stayed the exact appropriate amount of time.
10:33Told a couple funny stories.
10:35End of the night, picks up dinner.
10:37We're like, man, if he does anything good in the game, we're going to take care of this guy, man.
10:41So then he comes out the next day, and he has every game-winning play in the entire game.
10:46And we're going crazy over Larry Fitzgerald.
10:50And the next day, because it's our last game, we get to play golf instead of go start work on
10:57the next game.
10:58It's over, right?

10:59And who's standing on the first tee with balls and drinks and then, like, taking care?

13:46But I do remember the whole thing.

13:50He and Jerry working out together was just.
13:53They were machine.
13:54Like they said.
13:55Talking about the standard being the standard.
13:57We always hear that from Mike Tomlin.
13:59They had a standard out there the way they worked.
14:02But Jimmy Horn Jr. has this.
14:04Going to bring it out for the Panthers.
14:06Going to slip down just shy of the 30-yard line.
14:09And let's go down to Melissa.
14:11Yeah, Mike.
14:11I caught up with Roger Craig earlier tonight.
14:13When he was in seventh grade in 1973,
14:16he had a school assignment where he had to write what he wanted to be
14:20when he grew up.
14:21And he said a football player.
14:22Because he wanted to be just like his older brother, Curtis.
14:25And now, 53 years later, he is a pro football Hall of Famer.
14:30He told me he has always been a big fan of visualization.
14:34And that he visualized and experienced a life he could never have imagined.
14:38And someone who helped him along the way was Walter Payton.
14:41And Roger asked the Hall of Fame running back for advice early in his career.
14:45And Payton told him, always hit force with force.
14:48And Roger did just that throughout his career.
14:51And you guys were just talking about it.
14:53He introduced teammates to the hill,
14:55which was a punishing, steep, two-and-a-half-mile section of trail
14:59in Edgewood Park just outside of San Francisco.
15:02And many teammates couldn't hack it.
15:04Roger told me running the hill is where you built mental fortitude
15:07and where boys became men.
15:10And even now, Roger still runs as many as five miles a day on the treadmill.
15:14But his true love is being a granddad to his grandkids
15:17and spending as much time as he can around family.
15:22That hill is part of the lore for the 49ers over the years.

15:34Many of them be here to celebrate Roger Craig and his accomplishments Saturday.

15:54because they had dedicated their lives to the game of football.

16:03but Roger Craig was one of those heartbeat guys.

16:08And he was something special.

20:16give you another opportunity somewhere.
20:21And they're going to test you out there.

20:31They wanted to see me play tight end.

23:20I appreciate the football gods scheduling Sunday Night Football for all those big moments.

23:26It was unbelievable.
23:27Like, every time we went in there, he was breaking another record.
23:31I mean, it really was.
23:32It was bizarre.
23:33I'm like, eh, big deal.
23:34He broke the NFL record for the most touchdown.
23:37But, you know, it was really something to watch.
23:40And that place, back in the day between you and Sean, there was a connection that's almost
23:46impossible for me to explain.
23:48It was like you guys were really sort of one.
23:51It was kind of a symbiotic relationship.
23:53I mean, we spent so much time and preparation throughout the week and just so many conversations
23:57and communication that by the time we got to game day, I really knew when and how
24:02he was going to call everything.
24:04Like, within the first two words out of his mouth, as I'm walking up to the huddle, it's
24:07like, I know exactly why he's calling this play.
24:10You know, play caller's intent, as we say.
24:12And it was as if I was an extension of him on the field.

24:19Speaking of calls and Sean Payton, this call was so cool when you asked him to be the guy
24:24to present you at the Hall of Fame.
24:25You don't see this side of Sean Payton very often, right?
24:27No.
24:30Listen, we've done enough of this.

25:19But the typical production meeting with Sean is over under 56 minutes or so.
25:26You know, it's supposed to be 20.
25:28No, it's, he makes it, I mean, you can feel his passion for the game.
25:33And all these things I miss now, you know, like just being in a quarterback meeting.
25:37And he just literally would bust in the door and immediately go to the grease board
25:41and start just drawing something up.
25:43Like, no words said.
25:44And he'd turn around and kind of give you one of the, like that squint and the pursed lips,
25:47you know, and like we'd spend the next 15 minutes talking through one of these concepts
25:51that like, I saw this on film, I think we can attack him.
25:54I mean, he was just, he was such a technician that way, a teacher too.
25:57But think about life.
25:58Chris brought it up earlier with Miami and New Orleans, the two teams courting you after
26:02the injury.
26:03And Sean picks you up at the airport famously, gets lost, Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans
26:07has been ravaged.
26:09That's a fork in the road for you.
26:10And you take the New Orleans fork, you guys win a Super Bowl, and you go to the Hall of
26:15Fame.
26:15It may not have been written that way if you don't make that decision, that connection
26:18between the two of you guys.
26:20It's one of the best stories that I've been around covering sports.
26:23Look, it was meant to be.
26:24And I think we just forget just how on paper it was such an obvious decision to go to Miami.
26:28Right?
26:30Yes!

26:31And everything that New Orleans had been through, and Sean Payton, this unknown head coach,
26:35and, you know, I mean, him getting lost was the best thing that happened because it's
26:39when Brittany and I truly realized that this was about so much more than just football.
26:43How many times in your life do you get a chance to be a part of something so much greater
26:46than yourself?
26:47I've probably watched you tell that story online maybe three or four times because you
26:52pick apart the fact that, first of all, Miami, you go down there, right?
26:56And all they want to do is put you through medical, medical, medical, and I don't know,
27:00over the shoulder.
27:01And then you go up there, and Sean's like, you're our guy.
27:04You're our guy.
27:05You know, I'm going to take you around.
27:07And now you've got to drive around New Orleans with your family and the devastation of Katrina
27:12and go, yeah, we're going to do this.
27:15Like, what happened?
27:17Well, in Miami's mind, there was a ton of doubt.
27:20In New Orleans' mind, Sean Payton, Nicky Lemus, there was no doubt as far as me being their
27:25guy, my ability to come back and be a main figure on that team.
27:29And not just on that team in the realm of football and trying to win games and build
27:33a culture and a program, but our responsibility as members of that community and what an impact
27:39that we could have in the rebuilding efforts of one of America's greatest cities.
27:43And we all embraced that, like we truly did.
27:45I look at all the moves that were made and just like the divine nature as to how it all
27:51came together from free agents to Reggie Bush falling to the second pick.
27:54If you remember, you know, Mario Williams goes to the Texans at one.
27:57Reggie falls to us.
27:58And then just move after move that all of a sudden you just, we just created this team.
28:02It was an incredible draft.
28:05And we began to build what became the Saints.
28:08It's an incredible story.
28:10Really so cool to watch.

33:04And John Harbaugh's last game, Aaron keeps going.
33:07And then Mike Tomlin gives us one of the all-time reacts to a win.

33:17And I've been in a lot of those and, quite frankly, got really comfortable with it.

36:48And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the play call, and particularly Mike LaFleur.
36:52So, he called some double moves, some aggressive calls to get young Carson back, man, some, you know, some rhythm
36:59and some energy.
37:01I thought he was doing some helpful play calling as well.
37:04So, tell us about a head coach not calling the plays.
37:09So, you were a great defensive coordinator.
37:11I think you had the number two overall defense when you got the job with the Steelers.
37:14And you came out, and the decision to be a head coach and not be the play caller anymore like
37:22Dave Canales has done.
37:23What do you think of that?
37:24I think it positions you to manage the game better.
37:28It positions you to touch all 53 and interact with them.
37:33I think you're able to tie your agenda together better when you're not preoccupied with one phase of the game.
37:40Same thing, you probably make better decisions and more forward thinking in the special teams element of the game.
37:45I always thought when I was a play caller, I was a little bit step behind on some of the
37:50special teams moments because of the possession downs are so weighty.
37:55Unbelievable you use that word.
37:57Yeah, exactly.
37:57Because that's exactly what Canales would tell us.
37:59Yeah.
37:59He said that our guys would have a better plan than I did because I'm out arguing with the referees
38:05or trying to, you know, take care of the penalty or trying to motivate the defense or something.
38:10And that was the exact phrase that he said, I was a step behind.
38:14Yeah, because Brad Idzik is now calling the plays.
38:16We were talking to Brad on the field before the game, and he learned with Canales.
38:20He's been around him a lot, and Dave wanted him to be thinking the same way that Dave would.
38:25And Dave said that.
38:26There was a play, and Idzik would be like, yeah, that one.
38:28That's the right one.
38:29So he's got a decisive guy who he trusts to do it.
38:32I think that's important.
38:33You got people around you that know you and know how you think and what you want to do.
38:37The addition of Darryl Bevel.
38:40Also, they've got some experience from Seattle.
38:42It's good to surround yourself with like-minded people, with people that understand you, so that you can kind of
38:47take a step back.
38:48I just think that broad view is a better view from a leadership perspective.
