00:00A year ago, I made a horror short film, and now I'm going to tell you how I made it.
00:04Part 1, Inspirations.
00:06The main inspiration behind this was the Krakoan era of X-Men comics,
00:12and how they would often have pages that were just text, giving out world-building details.
00:17Another noticeable influence were Epistollary novels,
00:21a type of novels written out like letters or correspondence.
00:26Eh? Eh?
00:27Examples of Epistollary novels include books like Dracula or World War Z.
00:32While I haven't watched this film, I heard the 1924 Hungarian film Catsplay
00:37did a more cinematic version of an Epistollary novel,
00:40with the main crux of the film being narrated letters between two old sisters.
00:44Other cinematic influences were mostly screen-life movies,
00:47like the 2018 film Searching and the 2020 film Host.
00:51For audio logs and spy-by video games, I did the same thing in case of world-building.
00:55I did it for the short film, just to give the film a bit more of a sense of action
00:58and, well, scariness to it.
01:00Part 2, Production.
01:01I filmed correspondence by screen-reporting myself, typing on my MacBook.
01:05I edited two test videos, one on DaVinci Resolve and the other on iMovie,
01:09just to see which one would be the best choice when it came to editing.
01:11I decided to edit it on DaVinci Resolve.
01:14I did all the voices for the audio logs section myself.
01:17To make sure the audience could tell who was getting the emails on screen,
01:20I changed the colour scheme of my email account into distinctive colours.
01:23I thought this would give a good distinctive quality to the short film.
01:26Part 3, Self-Assessment.
01:27Overall, I'm proud with how the short film came out.
01:30While I think the type of sound effects don't really match what was implied to be happening off-screen.
01:38And I think the audio logs section should be more visually interesting.
01:42I also think the distinct colour scheme isn't shown as much as I wanted.
01:45While there are moments you can see it, it's just not clear for me.
01:49I hope to do more films like this in the future, though.
