01:45A major legal setback for Tehalka founder Tarun Tejpal nearly 13 years after a woman journalist accused him of sexual

01:52during the 2013 ThinkFest event in Goa.
01:55The Goa bench of the Bombay High Court has now overturned his acquittal and convicted him in the case.
02:01Tejpal has been sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and has been given two weeks to surrender.
02:0913 days into the agitation, the protesting students in Jharkand are refusing to back down.
02:14The students have now made it clear that they will only hold talks directly with Chief Minister Sorain
02:21in the open and in the presence of media.
02:24Facing mounting pressure, the Sorain government has now stepped up its response,
02:28setting up a four-member ministerial panel for dialogue,
02:31considering the demand to cancel examination results
02:35and also intensifying the probe with fresh arrests in the alleged paper leak case.
02:41Weeks after spearheading the neat agitation at Delhi's Jantar Mantar,
02:47CJP has announced a nationwide campaign titled,
02:50Kya Bolti Public?
02:52Aimed at taking its movement beyond protest sites and into towns and cities across the country.
02:59What they are essentially trying to find out by September, they hope, will be what next lies for the party.
03:05The party says it will engage directly with the people to understand their aspirations and concerns
03:09while placing issues like education reforms, unemployment and youth participation at the centre of the political agenda.
03:19Meanwhile, talking about students and protesters,
03:21Lok Sabha LOP Rahul Gandhi met protesting students in Delhi
03:25and launched a fresh attack on the Modi government over the alleged crackdown
03:28during the July 20th protests.
03:31Praising the young protesters, Rahul Gandhi said students showed courage by speaking up,
03:35something which the Prime Minister and Home Minister lack, he said.
03:38The BJP has hit back, rejecting his allegations and accusing Rahul Gandhi of politicising the protest.
03:47Also India Today is learning that major Catholic bishops and church heads are now set to meet Home Minister Amit

03:56shortly from now to raise concerns over the FCRA amendment bill.
04:01Around 10 Christian leaders are likely to be part of the delegation

05:33Among the deceased is slain former SPMP Atik Ahmed's youngest son, Iban Ahmed.
05:42Iban and his friend Sonu were killed after their speeding car crashed into a highway divider.
05:47The impact was so severe that the front of the vehicle was completely isolated.
05:54And Delhi NCR woke up to a soaking Thursday with heavy rain leaving waterlogged roads
06:00and disrupting traffic there across several parts of the region.
06:07IMD's forecast indicates that rainfall is likely to continue across NCR on Friday,
06:12although its intensity and distribution can vary considerably from one locality to another.
06:27Alright, we start the bulletin with some breaking news coming in.
06:29These are updates from the meeting that is now taking place.
06:33We are told it started now of Meta Executives meeting with the Maiti Ministry.
06:39Meta Executives have reached Rael Bhavan to meet Union Minister Ashwani Vaishnav.
06:45The meeting, remember, comes a day after Meta officials were summoned by Maiti
06:49over compliance and content moderation issues.
06:52This is day two of the meeting, where yesterday only they were told in very strict terms
06:58by the Ministry that they have to bring out an apology.
07:04Apology for two things.
07:05That's one for the video of the Prime Minister that was taken down.
07:10And then there were also questions by the government to Meta on promotion and promoted content,
07:15which led to sexual child, sexual abuse and pornography as well.
07:21Now, Meta has already apologised.
07:24Nobody less than Mark Zuckerberg has come out with a statement that happened about 24 hours ago
07:30when this meeting had happened.
07:32So, what exactly is expected on day two?
07:34Let me get across to my colleague, Shivani Charma, joining us for the very latest.
07:37Shivani, take us through what exactly is expected today.
07:44See, Sonal, this is the third meeting since yesterday.
07:46And this is the second meeting, in fact, with Ashwini Vaishnav earlier.
07:50Yesterday, the Secretary Maiti had met these top executives from Meta
07:55who are travelling specifically and specially from the United States.
07:59They have been summoned to India.
08:00Yesterday, we also know that after the two rounds of meeting,
08:04first with the Secretary and then with the Minister,
08:05there was an apology that came in from Meta, Joel Kaplan,
08:09who heads the global affairs of Meta.
08:11He had also given out a statement that Meta apologises for all the irregularities,
08:17especially when it comes to the removal of Prime Minister's video,
08:20the errors in the system and also the illicit content,
08:24especially when it comes to the child sexual abuse material
08:27that still is there on these platforms.
08:29So, all these issues were taken up.
08:31There were discussions.
08:33And now, the third round is now going on at Vail Bhavan,
08:37where I'm present right now,
08:39where the mighty Minister Ashwini Vaishnav is meeting these top executives.
08:43And this means that an apology is not enough.
08:47There is a strong warning, a stern warning that has gone into the Meta officials
08:52and a strong message from India that only apologies will not work
08:57because, you know, this is not the first time when Meta has issued these apologies.
09:00There have been similar cases earlier too.
09:03So, there has to be strict compliance, assurances from Meta on all these issues
09:09and they have to abide by the law of the land if they are operating here.
09:13They cannot just post things which are not in accordance to India's laws.
09:19So, they can also lose on to their safety which they enjoy in India
09:25that can also be revoked.
09:26That kind of a warning had been given out to Meta.
09:28So, certainly this is an important meeting
09:30and a strong message from India going across to Meta
09:33that they have to abide by the rules
09:36and the illicit content, the inappropriate use of Meta platforms
09:40will not be allowed in India.

09:57where it's day 13 of the students' protest.
10:00The protests continue to be in full force and it continues to be sustained as well.
10:06And now it looks like the Hemansurayan government there is finally opening the door to talks.
10:14All this while we've been hearing of some nominations going from the government side,
10:19but the students have made their point very clear.
10:22They want to meet directly with the Chief Minister.
10:24What is the Hemansurayan government saying?
10:26They are saying that they are constituting a four-member ministerial panel,
10:30but the agitating students are saying they are firm on their demand.
10:35They want to speak directly with the Chief Minister.
10:38They want to speak in full public view.
10:41And they want all of that to be on camera.
10:45Also, they say that till the time the demand is met,
10:48they will continue to sit in protest.
10:52Here's what's happening in Rachi.
11:05It took 13 days of protest, anguish and persistence
11:10by agitating Jharkand students for the Hemansurayan government
11:13to finally wake up and pay heed.
11:16It has now constituted a four-minister delegation
11:19to hold talks with the students in an attempt to resolve the issue.
11:45The Soran government has formed a four-minister delegation.
11:49It is also deliberating on the cancellation of the examination results.
11:54More than 18 accused have been arrested so far.
11:57The protesting students, on the other hand,
11:59have laid down their conditions for the talks.
12:02They want the discussions to be held directly
12:04with Chief Minister Hayvan Sorain
12:06in the open and in the presence of the media.
12:10Devinder Anath Mahatov, who is on a hunger strike,
12:12remains adamant, saying he will not end his fast
12:15until their demands are met.

30:04the opposition and the government. Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi
30:07met some of the protesting students in the national capital and he launched a
30:11fresh attack on the Modi government over the alleged crackdown during July
30:1520th protests. Now even praising the young protesters, calling them outspoken
30:19young fearless, Rahul Gandhi said that students showed courage by speaking up
30:22something which the Prime Minister and Home Minister lack. In fact BJP hit back
30:31on the comments made by Rahul Gandhi, BJP MP Sampit Patra rejected Rahul Gandhi's
30:36allegations maintaining that no shots were fired during July 20th March and
30:41accusing the Congress leader of exploiting students for political gains and pushing
30:45a divisive agenda. We had a freewheeling conversation with the some of the young
30:53protesters. They mentioned to me how they were assaulted, beaten, threatened. I'm
31:00very proud of them, I'm very proud of what they have done, what thousands of young
31:05Indians like them have done. They have defended the Constitution, they have
31:09protected the idea of India, they have protected India's future. Complaining
31:13about the education system which is a flawed system, a collapsing system, a
31:18useless system is not a crime. If anything the system needs to be changed, it needs to
31:24be corrected and that is all they were asking for. They were not doing violence,
31:29they were not being aggressive, they were not being nasty, they were beaten, they were
31:33assaulted, they are threatened. Accepting their apology, forcing them first, sending
31:39gundas to their house. After sending a gunda to the house, forcibly
31:45apology, 15-year-old children's apology, and then accepting that apology is complete nonsense.

31:56All right, let's cut across to my colleague Rahul Gautam also now joining us for the very
32:00latest on this story. Rahul, the story, the fact that students at the moment seem to be
32:10politicized is what the BJP is saying. BJP is saying it's a student protest, leave it there,
32:16don't politicize it. How is that sitting with the Congress Party and the allegation that Congress is
32:22also facing on the fact that Rahul Gandhi, while speaking about students in Delhi, has not really
32:27visited Jharkhand? How is the Congress Party responding to those allegations?
32:34Well, it seems that the cause of students has now become a core plank as far as Congress Party is
32:40concerned and that's why we are now witnessing a very aggressive Rahul Gandhi and Congress Party
32:45on this issue. Remember, I mean, two LOPs, two Chief Ministers going and sitting on a dharna outside
32:53Prime Minister's residence. Then we saw how a protest march was taken out by Rahul Gandhi.
32:58You know, Rahul Gandhi holding press conferences, holding government accountable on this. So clearly,
33:02as far as Congress is concerned, they believe that government is on back foot. And that's why we are
33:07seeing that, you know, almost every day Rahul Gandhi is doing something or the other to grab attention
33:14of the nation on this issue. And that's why, in fact, the two demands that have been raised by
33:21Congress Party in order to run the House are also about students. A, that Prime Minister should give
33:27an apology to this nation on the issue of violence that had occurred on 20th July. And also, they are
33:35seeking a statement also from the Union Home Minister. Now, clearly, Congress, you know,
33:40is going hammer and tong as far as this issue is concerned. And that's why we are seeing a kind
33:45of a stalemate or impasse still prevailing in both the houses where, you know, the Treasury benches
33:52and opposition benches are not meeting eye to eye. So clearly, it seems that this is only going to
33:56gather more steam in coming days. Okay, Rahul, we leave it there for the moment. Thanks so much for
34:00joining us. So that's where the Congress Party and BJP continue to spar over what really happened
34:06with students. But let's get across to some more updates coming in. This is from the round two of
34:11meeting between the METAR officials who've been flown in from the United States with the government of
34:17India. Now, platforms can't be run in India as per the US law were some of those strong words used
34:24by
34:26the government in that meeting that is underway as we speak with the Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav.
34:33These are technical matters is what we are getting to hear from sources.
34:37And they have asked some very strict questions of METAR. Let me cut across to my colleague
34:42Shivani who joins us for more. Shivani, what exactly is round two all about? When we spoke earlier,
34:47you said that apologies taken. Yes, but what else is it that the government is really asking
34:53metaphor at the moment? Seasonal apologies don't work when these situations and the content is
35:00impacting the society. The government sources are revealed that there are protocols that need to
35:07be followed. And here at Wain Bhavan, the meeting continues to be for more than 30 minutes now. There
35:12are presentations now being given by the METAR executives to the government. The government is
35:16working to see the logs and all those technical details are being now seen and monitored by the
35:23government here. The minister is himself watching. He's monitoring all those details. So this is a
35:28presentation now. The round two happens to be the more technical presentation from meta officials,
35:34not only verbal, but yes, all those logs that are questionable are being presented here. How these errors have
35:41been made in India and why it happened? How come the video of prime minister was unavailable for several
35:49hours from that platform? This is also a serious question that needs to be answered by the meta officials.
35:54And we know that apologies don't work because this is not the first time when the meta officials have
35:59given out that apology because what we are learning through the sources, the inside details are that
36:04the government is very strict. They say that these platforms cannot work in India as per US laws.
36:09They have to comply by the laws of the country. And that's why all these presentations are being
36:15checked, being seen, and all those technical details are being watched by the governments. And there is
36:21an ultimatum and a warning that has been given out to meta this time. So a very serious concern
36:27that has been raised by the government that you need to follow the laws. You cannot just
36:32play out the content that can be harmful for society in India. It can be of any matter. It can
36:39be a sexual
36:40content, the child abuse material that had been floating around on meta. And the fraudulent apps, that
36:47economic fraud that has been happening through these apps that are active on these meta platforms. So
36:54all this is being seen, being checked, and here the presentation goes on. So this time, it's a tough call
37:00from
37:01the government. The meta officials are answering the questions raised by the government through the
37:06presentations and the log they need to show them.

37:15All right, moving on now to the other big story we've been tracking. Another day, another E20 controversy.
37:20Even as the government repeatedly insists that ethanol blended petrol is safe, social media and
37:27automobile forums continue to be flooded with complaints of engine trouble, poor mileage, fuel
37:34system failures, and even repair bills. Now, India today has access to letters from the country's
37:41Apex Automobile Industry body, the SIAM, that's the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, which
37:49appear to validate many of those concerns from being abruptly withdrawn just days later.
37:57Now, understand the sequence here. In the sequence of events has now raised uncomfortable questions.
38:03In its 28th of July communication to the Petroleum Ministry,
38:08SIAM warned of what is called a massive increase in vehicle part failures. It writes it in that letter.
38:16In vehicle parts failures as well, and the industry body linked these failures to fuel contamination,
38:22specifically highlighting chloride-induced corrosion, and noted that such complaints have increased
38:30after the rollout of E20 fuel. But on the 4th of August, Siam made a complete U-turn,
38:37formally withdrawing the letter, asserting there was no cause for concern,
38:41reforming its support for the government's E20 program, and maintaining that such issues are
38:47routinely handled between automakers and oil companies.
38:53What's significant is that SIAM's original communication wasn't based on vague consumer feedback.
39:00It identified specific components that manufacturers were seeing fail more frequently
39:05during field investigations. These included fuel injectors, fuel pumps, exhaust gas recirculation,
39:13or the EGR valves as we know them as, exhaust components, several fuel system parts as well,
39:19components that remained constantly exposed to fuel and engine emissions.
39:26The letter attributed these failures to corrosion and wear linked to chloride contamination.
39:33The industry body also proposed a road map instead of merely flagging the problem.
39:39Siam urged the government to tighten the Bureau of Indian Standards specifications by introducing stricter
39:45limits on chloride content in fuel.
39:49It didn't stop there. It also saw tougher fuel quality dorms, warning that repeated contamination-related
39:56incidents could eventually dent consumer confidence in the government's flagship ethanol blending program.
40:04The Centre, however, has firmly rejected suggestions of a systemic fuel quality problem.
40:10The Petroleum Ministry says that fuel quality is under continuous surveillance across the country,
40:17and according to the government, fuel is monitored at over 87,000 retail outlets.
40:24Water ingress checks are conducted 8 to 12 times every year. More than 2,000 fuel samples have been tested
40:31for
40:31contamination and only two cases of chloride contamination have been detected nationwide.
40:38Both of which, it says, were immediately acted upon.
40:43So, the government's position has also been reiterated in Parliament.
40:49In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Road Transport Minister Nitin Ghatkaray stated that there had been no
40:54widespread or substantiated complaints at all of any kind of engine failure or any kind of corrosion.
41:02Fuel pump damage was also not reported or other major performance issues due to E20 fuel.
41:10In fact, the government, in its reply to Parliament, has cited the very SIEM study.
41:17It's cited not just SIEM, it's cited ARAI, it's cited IOCL, IIP and other, you know,
41:25manufacturing, automobile manufacturers as well.
41:27In fact, Ghatkaray, Union Minister Nitin Ghatkaray mentioned that laboratory and field trials have
41:35found E20 to be safe for vehicles operating under prescribed standards. The debate, however,
41:42on E20 is unlikely to end anytime soon. The question now is whether this controversy ends with official
41:50assurance or demands greater transparency on fuel quality and long-term vehicle performance.
42:01All right. Moving on from E20, let's take you to an important judgment that came out from the High
42:11Court today. The High Court has reversed the acquittal, but the legal battle is entering its final phase.
42:19I'm talking about Tarun Tejpal. Tarun Tejpal has now moved to Supreme Court to challenge the conviction
42:26and seeking a stay on the order. Here's a closer look at what really happened
42:33and also what spanned 13 years. Witnesses who sharply had different things and two verdicts that stand
42:43between this judgment. Here's a detailed report.

43:00From acquittal to conviction and a 10-year rigorous jail turn.
43:06The Tarun Tejpal case has now taken a dramatic turn.
43:10The Bombay High Court's Goa bench has convicted Tehelka founder Tarun Tejpal in the 2013 rape case,
43:18overturning the Goa trial court's 2021 acquittal.
43:23This judgment of the High Court today has come as a solace for that victim. And it was a judgment
43:31which is passed based on justice and the evidence that is there on record. Today I feel that justice has
43:38been done and I'm happy that the state has been able to provide justice for a victim girl.
43:44Investigation was holpura and has been presented properly before the trial court as well as now
43:51during the arguments and the High Court has really gone extensively in appreciating the evidence which
43:59was canvassed and accordingly the order has come for setting aside the equity order.
44:04In side court, the 62-year-old sought leniency citing his age, wife and two daughters.
44:12Tejpal also claimed he was a political victim.
44:44The

45:15This case goes back to November 2013.
45:18A woman journalist working with Tehalka accused Tejpal of sexually assaulting her inside
45:23a Goa resort elevator during the magazine's fest.
45:27Days later, Tejpal stepped down as Tehalka editor-in-chief.
45:31He was arrested on November 30th, 2013 and spent nearly six months in custody before the
45:37Supreme Court granted him bail in 2014.
45:40Then came the first major twist.
45:42In 2021, the Goa trial court acquitted Tejpal, citing what it described as inconsistencies
45:49in the prosecution's case and questioning the complainant's conduct and messages.
45:54The court held that the prosecution had failed to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt.
46:00But the Goa government challenged the acquittal.
46:03And now, in 2026, the verdict has flipped.
46:07The Bombay High Court has convicted Tejpal.
46:09The legal battle, however, is far from over.
46:12Tejpal has now approached the Supreme Court, seeking a stay on the High Court order.
