00:16Ukraine has endured one of the most devastating aerial assaults in Kyiv in recent weeks.
00:21Overnight into August 5, Russia launched a massive combined missile and drone attack
00:26on Kyiv and the surrounding Kyiv oblast, triggering widespread destruction, deadly fires and mounting
00:32civilian casualties.
00:34Here's everything we know so far.
00:36According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched around 28 missiles and 115 attack
00:42drones during the overnight assault.
00:44The missile barrage reportedly included ballistic missiles such as the Iskandar-M and S-400
00:50derived systems, along with Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles.
00:54Some monitoring groups also suggested North Korean-made KN-23 ballistic missiles may have
01:00been used, though those details remain under assessment.
01:04The missiles and drones targeted multiple locations across Kyiv and the surrounding region, making
01:09it one of the largest coordinated attacks in recent weeks.
01:13One of the most alarming aspects of the strike was Ukraine's inability to intercept the incoming
01:18ballistic missiles.
01:19The Ukrainian Air Force said none of the missiles were shot down, although air defenses successfully
01:25intercepted 98 of the 115 attack drones.
01:29Officials say impacts were recorded at around 26 different locations.
01:33The failed missile interceptions have once again highlighted Ukraine's growing shortage of
01:38Patriot interceptor missiles, the country's most effective defense against ballistic missile attacks.
01:44President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly warned that dwindling interceptor supplies are
01:49leaving Ukrainian cities increasingly vulnerable.
01:52Following the latest attack, Zelenskyy said additional Patriot missiles could have saved lives
01:58and again urged Ukraine's allies to accelerate deliveries of air defense systems.
02:03The human cost of the strike has been severe.
02:06Initial reports indicate at least 17 people were killed, while around 40 others were injured
02:12across Kyiv and the surrounding region.
02:15Emergency crews spent hours searching damaged buildings, battling fires, and rescuing survivors
02:20trapped beneath debris.
02:22Some of the worst damage was reported in Brovary district, where multiple civilians were killed
02:27near a railway station.
02:28Fires also broke out in Bucha, Fostiv, and several industrial and logistics facilities across the
02:35capital region.
02:36Among the sites reported damaged were major warehouse and distribution centers, including
02:41facilities linked to Novoposhta and Rosetka, two of Ukraine's largest logistics and retail
02:47companies.
02:48Additional commercial warehouses and business infrastructure also sustained heavy damage as
02:53explosions ripped through industrial areas.
02:56Russian officials have described the targets as transport and logistics facilities supporting
03:01Ukraine's military.
03:03Ukrainian authorities, however, say many of the locations struck were civilian businesses
03:08with little or no direct military role.
03:11As firefighters continued battling massive blazes, concerns also grew over deteriorating air
03:17quality caused by smoke from burning warehouses and industrial buildings.
03:21The latest attack comes amid a broader escalation in Russia's long-range missile campaign against
03:27Ukraine.
03:28Military analysts say Russia has increasingly relied on ballistic missiles and hypersonic weapons
03:34to exploit Ukraine's shortage of advanced interceptor missiles.
03:38At the same time, global demand for Patriot and other air defense systems has placed additional
03:44pressure on Western stockpiles.
03:46recovery operations remain underway as officials continue assessing the full extent of the damage.
03:53Casualty figures may change as rescue teams search affected areas.
03:57The overnight assault underscores the growing challenges facing Ukraine's air defenses and the increasing urgency
04:04of securing additional interceptor missiles before further large-scale attacks.
