00:00An MCA leader has urged the government to reinstate three elite police units disbanded in 2018,
00:07warning that their absence has weakened the fight against organized crime and drug syndicates.
00:13MCA Vice President Lawrence Lowe said the Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group,
00:19Special Task Force for Anti-Vice Gaming and Gangsterism,
00:22and Special Task Force on Organized Crime were once the worst nightmare for organized crime syndicates.
00:29In a Facebook post, Lowe argued that their abolition by the then Pakatan Harapan-led government
00:35created a major gap in the police forces' tactical and intelligence capabilities.
00:39Lowe warned that drug trafficking syndicates and organized crime groups had become increasingly bold,
00:46citing recent cases of Malaysians arrested abroad,
00:49including a pilot nabbed in Indonesia for allegedly trying to smuggle 26 kilograms of drugs.
00:55For Lowe, the gaps in enforcement could no longer be ignored,
00:58and the three units should be re-established to strengthen integrated tactical operations
01:03against drug trafficking syndicates.
01:05Sting targeted drug syndicates and drug barons.
01:09Stag focused on vice and gambling syndicates,
01:12while Stafford went after underworld kingpins and other serious organized crime.
01:17The government disbanded the units in June 2018,
01:21citing overlapping duties and coordination problems,
01:24while then Home Minister Hamzah Zainuddin maintained in 2021
01:27that there was no need to revive them.
