00:00Here's the irony.
00:02Malaysians now pay monthly fees for private security in ordinary neighbourhoods.
00:07Why? Because police response is often too slow.
00:11Then the government adds an 8% SST on those security fees.
00:17For Ravindran Ramankoti, who is one of those affected,
00:20it is another financial burden to bear.
00:23He points out that Malaysians are effectively taxed for protecting themselves.
00:28Don't forget that these very same people already pay income tax, assessment tax, and quit rent.
00:36Private security guards are filling a gap that public policing cannot always cover.
00:41Crime statistics show why neighbourhood security has become a necessity, not a luxury.
00:47If food and housing deserve SST exemptions, why not family safety?
00:53Ravindran is appealing to the finance minister to waive the SST for residential guard services.
01:00At the same time, he says,
01:02policing must be strengthened with more patrols, better response, and more well-equipped neighbourhood posts.
01:09He stresses that Malaysians are not asking for a handout, just fairness.
01:15For more of Ravindran's views, look up his opinion piece,
